Introduction. Les techniques de multiplication in vitro de bananiers ne sont pas adaptées aux paysans. Par ailleurs, l'utilisation de techniques de pépinière in vivo permet d'augmenter le taux de multiplication des bananiers au champ, mais elle présente le risque de multiplier du matériel contaminé et de perdre de nombreux bourgeons présents sur le pied mère. Pour pallier ces problèmes, nous avons mis au point au CARBAP (Cameroun) une nouvelle technique de multiplication de masse in vivo, la technique des “plants issus de fragments de tige” (PIF) qui permet d'activer des bourgeons latents et de produire rapidement hors sol des quantités importantes d'un matériel de plantation sain. Matériel et méthodes. L'activation des bourgeons latents a été testée au cours d'une première expérience. Des explants munis d'un seul bourgeon ont été prélevés sur des tiges de bananiers de trois variétés de plantain (AAB) et d'une variété de banane (AAA), puis ils ont été ensemencés dans un germoir. Une deuxième expérience a testé les capacités de prolifération de certains bananiers. Des explants à plusieurs bourgeons, obtenus à partir de petits rejets de bananier `Grande naine' (AAA) et de quatre cultivars de plantains (AAB), ont été prélevés puis incisés en croix avant d'être mis en germoir. Le temps nécessaire à l'apparition des premières pousses, le taux de débourrement, le nombre de pousses formées et sevrées, et la durée de formation des pousses jusqu'au sevrage ont été mesurés. Résultats. À l'issue de la première expérience, les bourgeons récupérés 80 j après l'ensemencement des explants ont représenté (4 à 15) fois le nombre de pieds mères utilisés. Ce nombre a cependant varié avec la variété, l'état physiologique et la qualité du matériel initial. Il en a été de même pour le temps de réponse compris entre (3 et 4) semaines et pour le taux de débourrement des bourgeons. À l'issue de la deuxième expérience, des taux de prolifération moyens de (10 à 20) pousses par explant ont été obtenus en (30 à 40) j sur (60 à 70) % des explants de plantains. Au cours de cette même période, un maximum de 25 pousses par explant a été observé chez Bâtard tandis que French clair a pu produire, dans 13 % des cas, entre (28 et 36) pousses par explant. Conclusion. La technique des PIF permet d'induire in vivo une active prolifération de bourgeons sur des fragments de tige de bananiers dans des conditions particulières de température et d'hygrométrie et sans adjonction d'hormones. Elle est facilement utilisable par les planteurs.

Introduction. L'apparition de la cercosporiose due à Phaeoramularia angolensis en 1993 en Guinée constitue de nos jours l'un des facteurs limitants de la culture des agrumes dans ce pays. Le manque de connaissance sur la sensibilité, vis-à-vis du pathogène, des espèces ou variétés d'agrumes présentes localement freine la relance projetée pour cette culture. Face à cet enjeu, des études sur la sensibilité in situ et des essais de contrôle chimique de la maladie ont été entrepris. Matériel et méthodes. Des agrumes en collections et en plantations villageoises ont été suivis de 1995 à 1999 dans les principales régions productrices d'agrumes de Guinée afin d'évaluer la sensibilité à Phaeoramularia angolensis d'une soixantaine de variétés. En complément, un essai de lutte chimique a été mené en 1999 afin de définir les doses et fréquences de traitements à recommander aux planteurs pour contrôler la maladie. Le taux d'organes atteints et les pertes de production dues au pathogène ont été évalués. Résultats et discussion. Les sensibilités ont varié suivant les sites mais surtout en fonction des espèces et de leurs variétés. Presque tous les orangers et tous les tangelos et pomelos se sont montrés sensibles à très sensibles à la maladie avec des taux de dépréciations de l'ensemble de la production (feuilles et fruits) souvent supérieurs à 30 %. Les taux de sensibilité des mandariniers ont été plus contrastés avec des variétés tolérantes (Ponkan) à très sensibles (Hansen). Les tangors, citronniers, limettiers, kumquats et pamplemoussiers se sont révélés tolérants dans tous les sites à la seule exception du limettier Tahiti et du citronnier Meyer au-dessus de 800 m d'altitude. Lors de l'essai de lutte chimique, la dose de 100 g de matière active $\cdot$ 100 L-1 d'eau appliquée tous les 10 j a permis d'élever en moyenne à près de 90 % le taux de fruits potentiellement commercialisables. Par ailleurs, la rentabilité des vergers a décru rapidement dès que le taux d'attaques des fruits a été supérieur à 20 %. Conclusion. Nos résultats montrent que de nouvelles recherches entreprises dans le contexte actuel de l'agrumiculture guinéenne pourraient permettre de répondre aux problèmes de stratégies de lutte à adopter, de produits, doses ou périodes à recommander et de variétés à promouvoir dans le pays.

Introduction. In Ethiopia, avocado is cultivated in many traditional homesteads. For the nurseries, there is a need for standardized formulas for potting media constituting locally available sowing media. Materials and methods. Our study was undertaken at the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (Ethiopia) to evaluate the effect of different media types and weights on the emergence and the seedling shoot growth of avocado trees. The study focused on addition of various proportions of locally available organic sources (farmyard manure and coffee pulp) and sand to topsoil. Eight media mixes were prepared. Those media mixes were combined at three media weights [(1.5, 2.5 and 3.5) kg] and studied with a factorial block design completely randomized with four replications. The data on mean days to emergence (Mde) and shoot growth were destructively collected from four sample plants per plot at 30-day intervals (duration) starting from 30 days after emergence (Dae) up to 180 Dae (six months after emergence). An analysis of variance was done at each sampling. Results and discussion. Avocado seeds took about 70 Mde. The different media types significantly influenced the total fresh and dry weight of the seedlings. Plant height, fresh and dry weight and shoot diameters were highly and significantly affected by media type and weight interactions. MT6 (topsoil 3 vol. + farmyard manure 2 vol.) gave a significantly higher total dry weight than MT1 (topsoil 4 vol. + sand 1 vol.) and MT8 (topsoil). Media weights affected all shoot growth characters. As the media weight increased, most shoot growth characters increased. All growth characters were highly influenced by the growth duration, and by the medium weight and growth duration interactions. Conclusion. At the initial growth stages, the dry matter increase was similar on all media weights up to 60 Dae; as the seedlings developed, the effect of higher weights was clearly seen, showing the importance of using larger medium containers for optimizing growth, which is due to the contribution of a larger supply of nutrients and no restriction on root growth. Based on this study, the seedling growth was stabilized between (90 and 120) Dae and responded well to additional nutrients and media weight as growth advanced in the nursery.

Introduction. For the micropropagation of woody species, contamination of in vitro cultured explants is a constant problem, which can compromise the development of the technique. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of an antibiotic and a fungicide on surface and endophytic microorganisms associated with Annona cauliflora, A. bahiensis and A. glabra (Annonaceae) tissue culture. Materials and methods. Our work made it possible to compare a standard disinfection of in vitro cultured explants and the use of either a commercial fungicide, Benlate 500 (50% of benomyl) at (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0) ${\rm g} \cdot {\rm L}^{-1}$, or an antibiotic, ampicillin at (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0) ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm L}^{-1}$. Results. The study revealed considerable variations in the infection rates within species and according to the concentrations of benomyl and ampicillin used. Benomyl was effective at cleaning leaf segments, and, at a concentration of 1.0 ${\rm g} \cdot {\rm L}^{-1}$, this fungicide was sufficient to eliminate all fungi. Ampicillin treatments at (0.0 to 4.0) ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm L}^{-1}$ were ineffective at controlling bacterial contamination. Conclusion. Referring to the difficulty in obtaining an aseptic in vitro culture starting from a woody species, the average number of healthy explants obtained after the disinfection of foliar explants of Annona sp. using the antimicrobial substances tested was significant. Further studies to evaluate the effects of the concentration of chemicals on in vitro plant regeneration for Annona species are needed to clarify the relationship between the concentration and phytotoxic effect of chemicals.

Introduction. V. doniana Sweet fruit juice is sweet and has been fermented for many years in Nigeria using a traditional technology to produce wine. In this country, black plum is collected from wild trees in the natural ecosystem or from trees cultivated in isolated farms. Our study compared the chemical and sensory properties of wine produced from traditional or controlled fermentation of black plum juice. Materials and methods. Four types of experiments, two with spontaneous fermentation and two with controlled fermentation, were carried out, each with five replicates. The proximate composition, alcohol content and pH of the solutions obtained after spontaneous or controlled fermentation were determined. Moulds and yeasts isolated in the fermented juice were identified. Results and discussion. Wine obtained from controlled fermentation had 10.5% alcohol content while the spontaneous fermentation produced a wine of 5.0% alcohol content. The chemical analysis of juice produced from harvested ripe Vitex doniana fruit showed that it contained a soluble protein content of 75.62 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$, pH of 4.5, total sugars of 95.10 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$, titratable acidity of 0.33 ${\rm mg}\cdot 100$ mL-1, and ascorbic acid of 5.2 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$. The yeasts isolated from the wine were Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. coreanus, and filamentous moulds were Rhizopus stolonifer, Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp. Single cell protein was produced from the fruit juice by cultivation in it of Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from the fruit. The yeast had a protein content of 6.8 ${\rm mg} \cdot {\rm mL}^{-1}$ when grown at 20 °C for 36 h at pH 5.8. Conclusion. Wine produced from Vitex doniana Sweet juice has quite high alcohol content and is palatable with good flavor. The stability of the juice for yeast growth is an advantage for the production of single cell protein.
