With great sadness, the Editorial Committee notes the untimely death of our friend and colleague, Dr. Catherine Seville, in February 2016. Catherine made a very distinctive contribution to the Journal and will be sorely missed. In her own academic writings, she produced books and articles in specialist journals in intellectual property. She also wrote her own contributions to this Journal. As Book Review Editor, however, she excelled. She took on the role in 2011, despite writing initially that “I am a bit concerned that I already have plenty to do”. She went on to expend considerable energy and time in shaping the Book Review section, stamping it with her own inimitable style. She succeeded in significantly increasing the number of reviews the Journal publishes, meticulously selecting books for which a review could make a potential contribution to scholarship. She had the ability to persuade even senior and busy academics or practitioners to undertake a review and keep to deadlines, and nurtured early-career academics new to the perils of book reviewing. Once received, all reviews would be carefully edited to ensure message and prose style conformed to good standards of clear communication. She cared deeply about the quality of the book review as a genuine scholarly exercise which makes an important contribution to the legal community. Contributors have learnt a great deal from her. The Journal is committed to continuing her legacy in that, however they may be treated in research excellence and promotions exercises, the book review remains an important element of legal scholarly debate.
