Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of glyphosate concentration, surfactant concentration, and ammonium sulfate on the control of giant burreed when applied through a ropewick applicator. Under non-flooded conditions, a 30% (v/v) solution of glyphosate applied with a ropewick applicator gave the highest giant burreed injury in 1987 and 1988, and reduced corm and rhizome viability compared to the nontreated control in 1987. Warm, dry conditions may have been responsible for poor long-term control in 1988 by reducing translocation of glyphosate to rhizomes. Addition of ammonium sulfate or surfactant did not influence glyphosate toxicity to giant burreed when applied with a ropewick applicator. In the laboratory, leaf necrosis at the point of application was observed with surfactant at 0.6% or 1.2% regardless of glyphosate concentration. Absorption of 14C-glyphosate increased two-fold with the addition of surfactant, and translocation to roots and rhizomes decreased almost two-fold as surfactant concentration was increased from 0 to 1.2%. Electrolyte leakage increased with 30% glyphosate when surfactant concentration was increased from 0 to 1.2%. Localized leaf necrosis and disruption of tissues inside the leaf may be responsible for reduced giant burreed control with glyphosate and surfactant applied in high concentrations.

Imazethapyr, glyphosate-isopropylamine salt, and glyphosate-sodium sesqui salt plus 2,4-D injured bahiagrass severely for 4 to 6 wk after treatment (WAT) but effectively controlled seedheads for 10 WAT without permanently reducing turf density. Imazethapyr applied twice at 0.08 kg ha-1 suppressed vegetative growth of mowed bahiagrass by 5 WAT while unmowed turf was suppressed 62% by 6 WAT. Glyphosate-isopropylamine salt suppressed vegetative growth by 3 WAT, but did not consistently suppress unmowed bahiagrass. Bahiagrass treated with glyphosate-sodium sesqui salt injured bahiagrass more than glyphosate-isopropylamine salt when each was applied at the same rate. CGA 163935 suppressed bahiagrass seedheads for 8 WAT and vegetative growth from 2 to 4 WAT. The activity of mefluidide, MON 4620 plus paclobutrazol, paclobutrazol plus mefluidide, and flurprimidol plus mefluidide was minimal on bahiagrass.

Selective postemergence herbicides were applied broadcast to control wild-proso millet in soybeans early postemergence (early post), postemergence (post), and late postemergence (late post) when wild-proso millet was 2 to 8 cm tall, 3 to 15 cm tall, and 3 to 31 cm tall, respectively. CGA-82725, fluazifop, haloxyfop, and sethoxydim applied early post controlled 75% or less late-season wild-proso millet. Interrow cultivation following early post fluazifop applications improved wild-proso millet control and soybean yields. Higher rates of CGA-82725, haloxyfop, and sethoxydim applied post controlled 91 to 98% late-season millet, but resulting soybean yields were less than the hand-weeded check. Fenoxaprop, fluazifop, fluazifop-P, haloxyfop, quizalofop, and sethoxydim applied late post provided 93 to 99% late-season millet control and soybean yields equal to hand-weeded checks. Wild-proso millet emerging after early post or post herbicide applications contributed to reduced effectiveness from those treatments. However, most wild-proso millet emerged before late post applications and were controlled. Other herbicides including BAS-51702, clethodim, cloproxydim, and SC-1084 applied late post also controlled wild-proso millet in soybeans.

Triazine-resistant (TR) biotypes of weeds normally susceptible (S) to triazine herbicides first were documented in Ontario in 1974. By 1988, at least nine weed species had TR biotypes, and at least 50% of the corn-producing areas were infested. Corn has been grown the longest in the southwestern Ontario, but TR weeds are only a minor problem there. Predominant agronomic practices in the southwest include crop rotation, atrazine use on 60% of corn land, use of other postemergence herbicides, interrow cultivation, little silage corn, and little manure returned to the land. Corn, particularly grain corn, is new as a large hectareage crop in eastern Ontario. However, more than 75% of corn land in that area is infested with two or more TR weed species. Predominant agronomic practices in the east include continuous corn, nearly all fields are atrazine treated, use of postemergence herbicides is not common, cultivation is rare, 25% of the corn is for silage, and manure from corn silage is returned to all cultivated land. Adequate herbicide programs exist to control TR weeds in corn and other crops. However, the spread from field to field and from farm to farm is often rapid, particularly in eastern Ontario.

Field studies were conducted in 1987, 1988, and 1989 at Lethbridge, Alberta to determine suitable herbicides for the control of Russian thistle and kochia in field corn grown in a dryland cropping system. Soil-applied atrazine or cyanazine provided inconsistent control of these weeds under dryland conditions. Combining inter-row tillage or 2,4-D applied postemergence with soil-applied atrazine improved the consistency of weed control over years. Postemergence atrazine and dicamba plus 2,4-D controlled Russian thistle and kochia in all years. Corn yields reflected the level of weed control attained with each treatment. The suitability of the various treatments for weed control in corn grown under dryland crop production systems is discussed.

Management of herbicide resistance will require interdisciplinary research to understand the mechanisms and dynamics of resistance. We believe that models are valuable tools. Models propose hypotheses about biological processes that influence the evolution of resistance and management tools that may reduce resistance in weed populations. Hypotheses help to direct research. For example, our model proposes that fitness and gene flow dramatically influence the evolution of and recovery from resistance in weed populations. Therefore, our research agenda should include ecological investigations of the life-history traits involved in fitness and gene flow. The model suggests thresholds of susceptible weed abundance to reduce selection pressure and to delay resistance. These thresholds will be related closely to economic weed thresholds. While the resistance issue emphasizes the need for basic biological and ecological research, resistance is only a part of the broader research agenda, which calls for holistic and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing crop systems.

Seedlings of proso millet usually were killed by discing and rototilling in field experiments but populations were not reduced by mowing or by compressing under tractor wheels. In greenhouse experiments, recently emerged seedlings had the greatest mortality after raking and desiccation treatments but were less affected by shoot and/or root damage. In contrast, seedlings treated several weeks after emergence suffered greater mortality from shoot damage and less from desiccation. Two weedy proso millet biotypes, black and Crown, were used in the field experiments, and up to six biotypes were used in the greenhouse. Few significant differences among biotypes were found. Young (emerging) seedlings were extremely resilient to all treatments.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of application timing of imazethapyr and fluazifop-P on rhizome johnsongrass and pitted morningglory control in soybean. Herbicides were applied at three timings keyed to johnsongrass heights of 15, 30, and 60 cm and 3-, 6-, and 9-leaf pitted morningglory. Evaluations 6 wk after the final treatment indicated imazethapyr controlled both species best when applied at the 15-cm johnsongrass growth stage. Increasing imazethapyr rate did not increase control of pitted morningglory, but did increase johnsongrass control at the 15-cm application timing. However, at the 30-cm johnsongrass application timing, increasing the rate from 0.07 to 0.10 kg ha-1 improved control of both species. Johnsongrass control with imazethapyr was no more than 64% when applications were delayed to 30-cm or larger johnsongrass. Fluazifop-P controlled johnsongrass well at all timings.

Dr. Rex Leibl (Moderator, University of Illinois): Herbicide resistance is not new or limited to one particular compound or chemistry. Recently, there have been significant developments in this area that should increase our awareness of herbicide resistance and add to its urgency and also add to the timeliness of this topic … for this workshop. I'm referring to … the recent discovery of sulfonylurea-resistant weeds in Kansas, Colorado, and Idaho. Our goal for this workshop is to develop a strategy for controlling and avoiding herbicide-resistant weeds by tapping into the expertise and experience of the people in this room.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the effects of herbicide, herbicide rate, genetic variability, and soil moisture content on the tolerance of corn seedlings to two chloroacetanilide herbicides. Alachlor and metolachlor were applied preemergence at 2.2, 3.4, 4.5, and 6.7 kg ha-1 to 10 Great Lakes corn hybrids. Metolachlor appeared to be less injurious at the low rate and more injurious at the high rate than alachlor. Injury among the 10 hybrids tested varied significantly. Some of the hybrids appeared to tolerate alachlor more, while others tolerated metolachlor more indicating that even in a limited number of hybrids there was a spectrum of response. Six levels ranging from 8% to 22% soil moisture were evaluated for their effect on alachlor and metolachlor injury to corn seedlings. The herbicide injury ranged from no injury at the lowest soil moisture level to about 70% at the highest soil moisture level with 4.5 kg ha-1 application rate of alachlor or metolachlor.

Field studies evaluated the effects of crop, crop rotation, planting date, row spacing, no-till planting, and herbicides on wild-proso millet control. Benefin and EPTC reduced wild-proso millet biomass in new seedings of alfalfa, and the combination of herbicides and forage harvest prevented wild-proso millet seed production in that crop. Wild-proso millet seedling populations were reduced and corn yields increased when corn followed 1 to 4 yr of alfalfa. Apparent effectiveness of herbicides in corn increased after cropping with alfalfa. Germination of buried wild-proso millet seed decreased approximately 90% after 54 months which is equivalent to 4-yr prior cropping to alfalfa. Wild-proso millet control and field and sweet corn yields increased when the crops were planted late season (May 17) rather than early season (April 27). Planting sweet corn in rows spaced 76 cm rather than 108 cm apart also increased sweet corn yields. EPTC plus dichlormid (EPTC+) plus cyanazine always controlled wild-proso millet equal to or better than EPTC+ alone. When field corn was planted no-till into killed alfalfa sod, combinations of pendimethalin plus simazine and pendimethalin plus cyanazine provided the best wild-proso millet control and corn yields. But the following year when corn was no-till planted into corn stubble of the identical plots, wild-proso millet control from the same treatments tended to be lower and corn yields were reduced.

Four herbicide treatments applied in the spring or fall were evaluated for leafy spurge control and forage production in eastern and western North Dakota during a 5-yr experiment. All treatments gradually reduced the leafy spurge infestation at both locations except 2,4-D at 2.2 kg ae ha-1 applied annually in the spring or fall and picloram plus 2,4-D at 0.28 plus 1.1 kg ae ha-1 applied annually in the fall. The most cost effective treatment was picloram plus 2,4-D applied annually in the spring which provided a net return of $284 and $108/ha in eastern and western North Dakota, respectively, and averaged 80% leafy spurge control. Picloram at 2.2 kg ha-1 was reapplied only when leafy spurge control declined to less than 70% and provided a net return of $96/ha in eastern North Dakota, but a net loss of $235/ha in western North Dakota. Dicamba at 9 kg ae ha-1 was applied up to four times to maintain 70% control with an average net loss of $458/ha. Total potential production and value of forage will determine if a specific treatment is cost effective in any one location.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted in 1989 at Stoneville, MS to evaluate the efficacy of fluridone and MSMA applied at 0.3 and 1.0 kg ai ha-1, respectively, either alone or in combination and with or without 0.1 M ammonium sulfate on purple nutsedge. The herbicides were applied at 19 L ha-1 in an oil-water, invert emulsion (low-volume) and at 187 L ha-1 in water with a nonionic surfactant (0.25% v/v) (high-volume). Purple nutsedge control with both herbicides alone or in combination was greater with the low-volume than with the high-volume application. Addition of MSMA to fluridone, or of ammonium sulfate to fluridone plus MSMA did not enhance purple nutsedge control over fluridone alone applied in low volume. The addition of ammonium sulfate to fluridone alone applied in low volume reduced purple nutsedge control.

The effects of seed depth on growing point location of wild-proso millet, effects of alachlor placement, and chemical control of wild-proso millet were studied in field and greenhouse experiments. In 1986, 55 to 88% of the seedlings originating in the top 6 cm of soil had their growing point above the soil surface. The respective figures were 11 to 36% in 1987. Shoot exposure to alachlor resulted in significantly greater phytotoxicity than root exposure. Only EPTC or vernolate with a protectant, preplant incorporated, or pendimethalin preemergence, followed by atrazine plus tridiphane postemergence controlled wild-proso millet more than 85% all season.

Research was conducted in 1987 and 1988 to identify effective horseweed control strategies in no-tillage soybean production. Paraquat at 560 g ai ha-1 plus metolachlor at 2200 g ai ha-1, linuron at 840 g ai ha-1, and nonionic surfactant at 0.25% (v/v) applied preemergence provided less than 61% horseweed control. Glyphosate at 840 g ai ha-1, 2,4-D ester at 560 g ai ha-1, HOE-39866 at 840 g ai ha-1, or BAS-514 at 70 g ai ha-1 applied early preplant controlled more than 96% when followed by the above preemergence herbicide combination. Substituting either glyphosate at 840 g ha-1 or HOE-39866 at 840 g ha-1 for paraquat in the preemergence application program significantly increased control. Adding BAS-514 at 70 g ha-1 to preemergence treatments containing paraquat significantly improved control. The substitution of metribuzin, metribuzin plus chlorimuron (10:1 ratio), or linuron plus chlorimuron (16:1 ratio) for linuron resulted in greater control and soybean yield. Sequential applications controlled horseweed equal to or better than a single preemergence application at the same total rate.

Several weedy biotypes of wild-proso millet occur throughout Ontario. Field and laboratory studies were conducted in 1986 and 1987 to evaluate imazethapyr for preemergence and postemergence control of wild-proso millet. In the laboratory, imazethapyr, applied postemergence, effectively controlled weedy biotypes of wild-proso millet in the 4- to 5-leaf stage. Seedlings of black-seeded wild-proso millet were controlled at the 1- to 5-leaf stage by 50 g ai/ha of imazethapyr. Higher doses of imazethapyr were required to control later growth stages. In field studies, imazethapyr, applied preemergence or postemergence, effectively controlled black-seeded wild-proso millet, resulting in soybean yields comparable to the recommended postemergence treatment of sethoxydim.

Clomazone was evaluated preplant incorporated (PPI) or post-transplant (PT) for weed control in sweet potatoes. No crop injury by clomazone was detected. Clomazone controlled (≥90%). broadleaf signalgrass, large crabgrass, barnyardgrass, and prickly sida at all rates and methods of application (MOA). Common cocklebur was controlled (≥93%) by clomazone at 1.1 kg ai ha-1 applied PT or at 3.4 kg ai ha-1 PPI in 1988 and at all rates and MOA in 1989. Clomazone did not control carpetweed.

Water samples from eight locations, ranging in pH from 7.1 to 8.5, were tested to determine the effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) pressurization on pH. After pressurization with CO2 the pH of the water decreased 1.8 to 4.1 pH units. An increase of 0.4 to 1.2 pH units occurred after the CO2 pressurized water exited a spray nozzle. The use of N2 or air as a pressurizing gas had very little effect on pH. The addition of diammonium phosphate, urea-ammonium nitrate (UAN)3, or ammonium sulfate had only minor effects on water pH. The addition of monoammonium phosphate reduced water pH to 4.6 to 5.5. The physical/chemical properties and activity of a herbicide may be altered with the change in spray solution pH by using CO2 to pressurize the spray solution.

Known for thousands of years to produce a cleansing soaplike lather when crushed in water, bouncing-bet (Saponaria officinalis L. ♯3 SAWOF) is as pretty as its name. Though it has followed man around the world, it has always been an invited guest–until the 1900s, when our changing viewpoint redefined this millennial source of soap, fragrance, and beauty as a weed.
