Was it a reflection of the current economic squeeze or a deliberate retreat from the ways of Gargantua following the bold programming of Havergal Brian's mighty Gothic Symphony in 2011? Whatever the reason, brevity seemed to be the keynote of a good deal of new music featured in the 118th Proms season. In fact, few commissions and premières, including the majority of those considered below, lasted much longer than ten minutes.
