* As I was correcting the proofs for this article a letter arrived from David del Puerto in which he describes the piece he is writing for Gaudeamus '94. He begins with a reference to a new setting of poems from the Bronwyn cycle by Juan-Eduoardo Cirlot (first performance: Spanish Arts Festival, Almeida Theatre, 6 March 1994). ‘This is my first piece for voice in which I take up poetry as such. Once I used a Sanscrit text but only as “phonetic material”. My idea of vocal music has changed greatly since then. Now I am chiefly concerned with bringing music and text together. In fact the Gaudeamus commission will be based on a sizeable poem of Luis Cernudo, “La adoracion de los Magos”, for which I shall use sixteen voices (two choirs of eight solo voices each) and an ensemble of seven instruments.’ [trans RF]
