A pollen profile obtained from lake sediments at Lunkaransar, Rajasthan, in northwest India was used along with a pollen-climate calibration function to estimate past precipitation. Between 10,500 and 3500 yr B.P., the estimated precipitation was about 500 mm/yr, or about 200 mm/yr above the modern value. A model was used for the energy and hydrologic budget of a lake basin and lake at Sambhar (located 240 km SE of Lunkaransar) to calculate that a 200 mm/yr increase in rainfall above the modern amount would have raised the lake level about 20 m above the modern level. Topographic charts and satellite imagery provided some evidence in support of an enlarged paleolake of that elevation, but field exploration would be required to confirm the size and date of a former lake. After about 3500 yr B.P., the Lunkaransar profile indicated a desiccated lake bed; because no pollen was preserved, the pollen-climate calibration function was of no use for estimating the amount of the precipitation decline. A reduction of precipitation of about 200 mm/yr below the modern amount was estimated from the energy and hydrologic budget for paleolake Sambhar by assuming that the lake was one-tenth of its present size during the dry interval.

The stratigraphic record in the James and Hudson Bay Lowlands indicates that the sequence of glacial events at the geographical center of the 12.6 × 106 km2 Laurentide Ice Sheet may have been more complex than hitherto imagined. Isoleucine epimerization ratios of in situ and transported shells recovered from till and associated marine and fluvial sediments cluster into at least 4 discrete groups. Two alternative explanations of the data are offered, of which we strongly favor the first. Hypothesis 1: Setting the age of the “last interglacial” marine incursion, the Bell Sea, at 130,000 yr B.P. results in a long-term average diagenetic temperature for the lowlands of +0.6°C. Using this temperature enables us to predict the age of shells intermediate in age between the “last interglaciation” and the incursion of the Tyrrell Sea 8000 yr ago. Between these two interglacial marine inundations, Hudson Bay is predicted to have been free of ice along its southern shore about 35,000, 75,000, and 105,000 yr ago based on amino acid ratios from shells occurring as erratics in several superimposed tills and fluvial sediments. These results suggest (1) that traditional concepts of ice-sheet build-up and decay must be reexamined; (2) that “high” sea levels may have occurred during the Wisconsin Glaciation; and (3) that a critical reappraisal is required of the open ocean δ18O record as a simple indicator of global ice volume. An alternative, Hypothesis 2, is also examined. It is based on the assumption that the 35,000-yr-old deposits calculated on the basis of Hypothesis 1 date from the “last interglaciation”; this, in effect, indicates that the Missinaibi Formation, commonly accepted as sediments of the “last interglaciation,” are about 500,000 yr old and that the effective diagenetic temperature in the lowlands during approximately the last 130,000 yr has been close to −6°C. We argue for rejection of this alternative hypothesis.

Old Crow tephra is the first extensive Pleistocene tephra unit to be documented in the northwestern part of North America. It has a calc-alkaline dacitic composition with abundant pyroxene, plagioclase, and Fe–Ti oxides, and minor hornblende, biotite, apatite, and zircon. Thin, clear, bubble-wall fragments are the dominant type of glass shard. This tephra can be recognized by its glass and phenocryst compositions, as determined by X-ray fluorescence, microprobe, and instrumental neutron activation techniques. It has an age between the limits of 60,000 and 120,000 yr, set by 14C and fission-track measurements, respectively.

Old Crow tephra has been recognized in the Koyukuk Basin and Fairbanks region of Alaska, and in the Old Crow Lowlands of the northern Yukon Territory, some 600 km to the east-northeast. The source vent is unknown, but these occurrences, considered in relation to the distant locations of potential Quaternary volcanic sources, demonstrate the widespread distribution of this tephra and underscore its importance as a regional stratigraphic marker.

The age and number of important fossil-producing late Pleistocene terraces in the Tunica Hills have recently become quite controversial. One hypothesis holds that only a single loess-mantled Farmdalian terrace flanks the streams in this area. The other maintains that there are two terraces. The youngest is considered essentially Holocene in age while the older is Sangamon in age. Radiometric and stratigraphic evidence collected for this study indicates that there are two terraces. The youngest is late Woodfordian to Holocene in age while the other is Farmdalian.

Instrumental surveys of coastal profiles in the Cayman Islands, western Caribbean, reveal the presence of a horizontal erosional bench at +1.9 m on Grand Cayman and a deep horizontal notch at +6.4 m on Cayman Brac, but no raised erosional features on Little Cayman. Each island is surrounded by a horizontal constructional raised reef, usually below +2 m, here dated by U-series methods as 124,000 ± 8000 yr old, and hence broadly contemporary with other western Atlantic raised reefs of similar elevations. The different raised erosional features indicate independent vertical tectonic movement of the three islands, predating the formation of the raised reef. The accordance and horizontality of the raised reef indicates stability of the islands since the last interglacial times. An erosional notch at present sea level has formed since the sea reached its present level less than 2100 B.P., and algal benches on exposed coasts are also in equilibrium with present conditions.

Eleven well-drained soils formed in till parent materials of varying ages in northeastern Pennsylvania were studied to determine changes in the soils with time. Four profiles (three Lackawanna and one Bath) were formed in Woodfordian till (15,000 yr B.P.), and two (Leck Kill) were formed in Altonian till (>28,000, <75,000 yr B.P.). The remaining five (Allenwood) were formed in pre-Wisconsinan till (>75,000 yr B.P.). In these soils, the extractable iron oxide, extractable aluminum oxide, and kaolinite contents increase with age, as do the total clay and fine/total clay ratio. With increasing age, the maximum accumulation of these constituents is found deeper in the profile. The extractable silicon oxide distribution is constant with depth, but it decreases in overall amount with time. Gibbsite is found only in small amounts in the A horizon of Altonian soils, but occurs throughout the profile of pre-Wisconsinan soils, although only in small amounts. In general, differences were found in these soils which separated them into three groups representing varying degrees of soil development. A regression equation was derived to predict the age of soils formed from the Altonian till based on a “clay accumulation index” value for soils of known Woodfordian and Holocene ages. The equation log Y = 1.80 + 0.992(logX) best fit the data, with an r2 value of 0.913. Using this equation, a mean age of 41,000 yr was calculated for the Altonian soils. This date was used to derive a second equation to predict ages for pre-Wisconsinan soils. The equation with the highest r2 value (0.934) was log Y = 1.81 + 0.998(logX). Dates for soils developed in the White Deer till and the Laurelton till of the pre-Wisconsinan stage were calculated to be 86,000 and 91,000 yr B.P., respectively. These dates fall within ages estimated for the Sangamon Interglaciation and thus would appear to be too young for pre-Sangamonian materials. The probable reason for the “too-young age” is that the C-horizon material of the pre-Wisconsinan soils was weathered and did not provide an accurate estimate of clay accumulation for the prediction equation.

During the Holocene, moderate climatic and vegetational changes triggered several episodes of adjustment in the Brush Creek fluvial system. The alluvial chronology includes an episode of erosion at 7800 – 5700 yr B.P. corresponding to the mid-Holocene precipitation minimum and an episode of floodplain construction at 5700 – 5000 yr B.P. corresponding to a rapid increase in precipitation. Holocene climatic changes have influenced the sedimentology of the alluvial deposits and soil development on them. Fluvial adjustment is caused primarily by hydrologic and hydraulic changes related to climatic change, but there is no simple model for fluvial response to climatic change. The relationship between the direction of climatic change and the type of fluvial response is complex.

Seven packrat midden samples make possible a comparison between the modern and late Pleistocene vegetation in Kings Canyon on the western side of the southern Sierra Nevada. One modern sample contains macrofossils and pollen derived from the present-day oak-chaparral vegetation. Macrofossils from the six late Pleistocene samples record a mixed coniferous forest dominated by the xerophytic conifers Juniperus occidentalis, Pinus cf. ponderosa, and P. monophylla. The pollen spectra of these Pleistocene middens are dominated by Pinus sp., Taxodiaceae-Cupressaceae-Taxaceae (TCT), and Artemisia sp. Mesophytic conifers are represented by low macrofossil concentrations. Sequoiadendron giganteum is represented by a few pollen grains in the full glacial. Edaphic control and snow dispersal are the most likely causes of these mixed assemblages.

The dominant macrofossils record a more xeric plant community than those that now occur on similar substrates at higher elevations or latitudes in the Sierra Nevada. These assemblages suggest that late Wisconsin climates were cold with mean annual precipitation not necessarily greater than modern values. This conclusion supports a model of low summer ablation allowing for the persistence of the glaciers at higher elevations during the late Wisconsin. The records in these middens also suggest that S. giganteum grew at lower elevations along the western side of the range and that P. monophylla was more widely distributed in cismontane California during the Pleistocene.

More than 375 14C dates from 150 fossil sites in North America have been analyzed to evaluate the question of extinction of Late Pleistocene megafauna. When critically evaluated, no 14C ages for any extinct Pleistocene genera are younger than 10,000 yr B.P.
