The sum of winter accumulation and summer losses of mass from glaciers and ice sheets (net surface mass balance) varies with changing climate. In the Arctic, glaciers and ice caps, excluding the Greenland Ice Sheet, cover about 275,000 km2of both the widely glacierized archipelagos of the Canadian, Norwegian, and Russian High Arctic and the area north of about 60°N in Alaska, Iceland, and Scandinavia. Since the 1940s, surface mass balance time-series of varying length have been acquired from more than 40 Arctic ice caps and glaciers. Most Arctic glaciers have experienced predominantly negative net surface mass balance over the past few decades. There is no uniform recent trend in mass balance for the entire Arctic, although some regional trends occur. Examples are the increasingly negative mass balances for northern Alaska, due to higher summer temperatures, and increasingly positive mass balances for maritime Scandinavia and Iceland, due to increased winter precipitation. The negative mass balance of most Arctic glaciers may be a response to a step-like warming in the early twentieth century at the termination of the cold Little Ice Age. Arctic ice masses outside Greenland are at present contributing about 0.13 mm yr−1to global sea-level rise.

Two sections exposing a Late Pliocene–Pleistocene sedimentary sequence in the marginal valleys of the Bogotá Basin (Colombian Andes, South America) were sampled for paleomagnetic analysis. Magnetostratigraphy and fission-track dates of tephra beds provide a detailed geochronologic calibration for the sedimentary basin. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility complement the regional environmental record provided by lithological and palynological evidence. Sedimentation in the Bogota Basin started in the early part of the Gauss Chron at ca. 3.2 myr. The oldest recorded sediments belong to the Guasca Member of the Upper Tilatá Formation. They were deposited in a lacustrine/paludal environment, near the end of the tectonic uplift in the Bogotá area, and/or under Pliocene climatic conditions that were warmer than today. Repeated climate cooling associated with glaciations in the surrounding mountains resulted in the deposition of a fluvial–lacustrine complex referred to as the Subachoque Formation. The first glaciation is placed near the Gauss/Matuyama polarity reversal at 2.6 myr. A lithologic change in the Subachoque Formation marked by coarser-grained fluvial deposits and a possible increase in amplitude of the magnetic susceptibility signal occurs near the Matuyama/Brunhes boundary at 0.8 myr, indicating a shift toward higher magnitude climate oscillations.

An Atlantic source of precipitation can be inferred from stable isotopic data (H and O) for fossil groundwaters and uranium-series-dated carbonate spring deposits from oases in the Western Desert of Egypt. In the context of available stable isotopic data for fossil groundwaters throughout North Africa, the observed isotopic depletions (δD −72 to −81‰; δ18O −10.6 to −11.5‰) of fossil (≥32,000 yr B.P.) groundwaters from the Nubian aquifer are best explained by progressive condensation of water vapor from paleowesterly wet oceanic air masses that traveled across North Africa and operated at least as far back as 450,000 yr before the present. The values of δ18O (17.1 to 25.9‰) for 45,000- to >450,000-yr-old tufas and vein-filling calcite deposits from the Kharga and Farafra Oases are consistent with deposition from groundwaters having oxygen isotopic compositions similar to those of fossil groundwaters sampled recently at these locations.

Late Pleistocene glacial chronologies developed for the Front Range Mountains of Colorado include two or more cirque glacier advances, locally known as the Satanta Peak Advances. Sediment cores were recovered from Sky Pond, an alpine lake (3320 m) located less than 100 m downvalley from a moraine that exhibits late Pleistocene to early Holocene relative age features and appears to correlate to the Satanta Peak deposits. One of the cores penetrated 0.5 m of basal diamict and recovered 3.3 m of overlying sediments that are predominantly gyttja. An accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) age of 12,040 ± 60 yr14C B.P. was obtained from directly above the basal diamict and is similar to other reported ages for cirque deglaciation in the Front Range Mountains. The lower portion of the gyttja contains an interval of clastic sediments that show characteristics consistent with glacial activity in alpine catchments. Radiocarbon ages obtained from below and near the upper contact of this clastic interval are 11,070 ± 50 and 9970 ± 8014C yr B.P., respectively. An additional AMS age of 10,410 ± 9014C yr B.P. was obtained from within the clastic interval in a second core. The most likely source for this interval of clastic sediments is a moraine situated directly upvalley from Sky Pond, and consequently, it appears that the deposition of this moraine was coeval with the European Younger Dryas event (11,000–10,00014C yr B.P.). Similarities in soil development, weathering features, and altitude between this moraine and the type Satanta Peak moraines suggest that the moraines are correlative. These findings are in agreement with a growing body of evidence that suggests a relatively minor advance of alpine glaciers occurred in the North American Rockies during the Younger Dryas Chron.

Eolian quartz flux (EQF, g cm−2(103 yr)−1) to Lake Biwa, central Japan, provides direct information on variations of the East Asian winter monsoon. Lake Biwa sediments spanning the past ca. 145,000 yr are characterized by two main periods when EQF values were significantly greater than 5.50 g cm−2(103 yr)−1, and two main intervals during which EQF values were lower. Two periods with EQF values >5.50 g cm−2(103 yr)−1occurred from ca. 145,000 to 125,000 and 73,000 to 13,000 yr B.P., while times of lower EQF values occurred from ca. 125,000 to 73,000 yr B.P. and around ca. 5500 yr B.P. Between ca. 125,000 and 73,000 yr B.P., three minimum EQF values and two intervening peaks of slightly higher EQF values are recorded. EQF increased markedly from ca. 73,000 to 13,000 yr B.P., whereas between ca. 53,000 and 20,000 yr B.P. the values recorded were relatively lower than those recorded during either the preceding or the subsequent episodes. The data imply that the East Asian winter monsoon strengthened during the periods when EQF values were high, and weakened during the intervals with low EQF values. The EQF record of Lake Biwa can be correlated with the grain-size record of the quartz fraction in Chinese loess and with the SPECMAP marine δ18O record. However, the EQF record apparently lags ca. 5000 yr behind the loess and δ18O records during stage 6/5 and 2/1 transitions and ca. 10,000 yr during stage 5/4 transition. These apparent lags could be due to problems with the chronology; alternatively, they may imply that the eolian quartz flux depended more on the extent of dust source regions than on wind intensity during these transitions.

Sediment grain size, carbonate content, and stable isotopes in 70-cm-long (∼1500-yr) channel samples from Owens Lake core OL-92 record many oscillations representing climate change in the eastern Sierra Nevada region since 155,000 yr B.P. To first order, the records match well the marine δ18O record. At Owens Lake, however, the last interglaciation appears to span the entire period from 120,000 to 50,000 yr B.P., according to our chronology, and was punctuated by numerous short periods of wetter conditions during an otherwise dry climate. Sediment proxies reveal that the apparent timing of glacial–interglacial transitions, notably the penultimate one, is proxy-dependent. In the grain-size and carbonate-content records this transition is abrupt and occurs at ∼120,000 yr B.P. In contrast, in the isotopic records the transition is gradual and occurs between 145,000 and 120,000 yr B.P. Differences in timing of the transition are attributed to variable responses by proxies to climate change.

A long pollen record is derived from sediments of a lake dammed behind a low moraine of the last glaciation at 3°S latitude in the Ecuadorian Andes and is compared with a glacial age pollen record from the Amazon rainforest immediately below. Lake Surucucho (Llaviucu) lies at 3180 m on the Amazonian flank of the Andes and above the glacial age pollen record from San Juan Bosco at 970 m. The Surucucho pollen record is interpreted as showing treeless vegetation in glacial times, advance of treeline in late-glacial time, and Holocene development of modern Andean forests. Combining the Surucucho and San Juan Bosco records shows that Andean vegetation was affected by glacial cooling at all elevations. Vegetation did not move up and down slope as belts. Rather, plant associations were reformed as temperature-sensitive species found different centers of distribution with changing temperature.

Geologic evidence suggests that great (magnitude 8 or larger) earthquakes, or series of such earthquakes, occurred six times in the past 3000 yr at the northern Cascadia subduction zone. The archaeological record, and native oral traditions, demonstrate that native villages along the adjacent coasts of southern British Columbia and Washington State were occasionally abandoned in the late Holocene as a result of these earthquakes and associated tsunamis. We infer the temporal pattern of village occupation and abandonment from midden stratigraphy and from an activity index based on the probability distributions of radiocarbon ages at 30 archaeological sites in three regions of northern Cascadia. Deposits of probable tsunami origin are interbedded with, or bound, cultural strata at several sites. Earthquakes probably predate hiatuses in occupation, or periods of low inferred human activity, at many sites. The strongest correlation between earthquake incidence and site abandonment occurs in the Nootka Sound region. Effects of tsunamis vary with village location, coastal morphology, and late Holocene sea-level history.

Palynological study of two subalpine ponds on the Queen Charlotte Islands reveals changes in tree line and climate during the Holocene. The findings agree with previous reconstructions, from nearby Louise Pond on the Queen Charlotte Islands, that suggest a warmer-than-present climate and higher-than-present tree lines in the early Holocene (ca. 9600–6600 14C yr B.P.). Basal ages at SC1 Pond and Shangri-La Bog indicate that the basins did not hold permanent water before 7200 14C yr B.P., consistent with a warmer and drier early Holocene previously inferred from Louise Pond. Pollen and plant macrofossils indicate the initial establishment of subalpine conditions by 6090 ± 90 14C yr B.P., similar to the 5790 ± 130 14C yr B.P. age for cooling inferred from Louise Pond. Conditions similar to present were established at SC1 Pond by 3460 ± 100 14C yr B.P., confirming the previous estimate of 3400 14C yr B.P. at Louise Pond. This 3400 14C yr B.P. vegetation shift on the Queen Charlotte Islands corresponds with the beginning of the Tiedemann glacial advance in the south-coastal mountains of British Columbia (ca. 3300 14C yr B.P.), the Peyto and Robson glacial advances between 3300 and 2800 14C yr B.P. in the Rocky Mountains, and climatic cooling inferred from palynological studies throughout southern British Columbia, northern Washington, and southeast Alaska. These findings confirm that changes in regional climate influenced changes in vegetation in coastal British Columbia.

Holocene deposits of Mahoney Lake, a meromictic saline lake located in a closed basin in the semi-arid Okanagan Valley, contain evidence of frequent and marked changes in lake depth (up to >12 m/10014C yr) probably caused by short-term changes in effective precipitation. We studied a 5.45-m-long core comprising a basal layer of inorganic mud overlain by a succession of layers of calcareous laminated and nonlaminated organic mud, marl, and sand. We used Mazama tephra to adjust nine radiocarbon ages for the hardwater effect. Meromixis developed ca. 900014C yr B.P., and the lake has been episodically meromictic for about half the time since. Because of close linkages between sediments and depositional environments in meromictic and saline lakes, we infer that laminated sediments indicate meromictic conditions and high lake levels (>ca. 12 m water depth), whereas thick marl layers and nonlaminated sediments indicate nonmeromictic conditions and thus low lake levels (<ca. 8 m depth). Many of the inferred short-term climatic changes have not been identified in previous studies in northwestern North America, perhaps because of insensitive climatic proxies, inadequate temporal resolution, or discounting of anomalous findings.

The Holocene expansion of eastern larch (Larix laricina[Du Roi] K. Koch) at the edge of its geographical range in northwestern Québec was reconstructed using pollen and macrofossils from peat deposits. BecauseLarixis a poor pollen producer, the total pollen sum of 300–500 grains per spectrum was supplied by an additional survey of 2000 grains. However, the use of 2000 pollen counts did not give a betterLarixrecord. The combination of both pollen and macrofossil analyses offered greater opportunities to estimate the time of arrival of eastern larch at the edge of its distributional range. Along the study transect, eastern larch established east of 75° W long before 2000 yr B.P. but not sooner than 5000 yr B.P., whereas it arrived much later, after 1500 yr B.P., in most sites west of 75° W within a migration corridor around 57° 45′ N. The macrofossil record is completely different between the eastern sites, with high frequencies and densities, and the western sites where larch occurs sporadically with few remains only, concentrated in the upper part of the peat profiles. The colonization pattern of eastern larch was patchy in time and space, as suggested by the available macrofossil records, present distributional pattern in the area, and age structure of extant populations. The establishment of disjunct larch populations in the westernmost sites most likely proceeded from long-distance transport. The spatial–temporal pattern of eastern larch west of 74° W may have been influenced by the site conditions associated with late deglaciation in central northern Québec.

Seventy well-preserved fossil remains from deposits of an eroded karstic cave in the Upper Galilee of northern Israel includeUrsus deningeri(Ursidae),Canis lupus cf.mosbachensis (Canidae),Crocuta crocuta cf. praespelaea (Hyaenidae), Panthera leo cf. spelaea (Felidae), and Dama sp. (Cervidae). This assemblage probably dates to the Early Toringian (MQ2, Middle Pleistocene). Ursus deningeri and Panthera leo cf. spelaeahave never before been recorded south of the Taurus–Zagros mountain chain. We correlate the carnivore faunule with some Near Eastern and southern Levantine sites and assume that only a severe cold phase could have shifted these species over the Taurus–Zagros mountain chain this far to the south. Due to the relative scarcity of Middle Pleistocene assemblages, especially carnivores, in the southern Levant, the biogeographic connection between the southern Levant and the Near East is still not well known. This faunule elucidates Pleistocene biotic exchanges between Europe and the Levant during this period.

Strandplains of shore-parallel beach ridges bordering the Great Lakes are valuable for reconstructing histories of climate-related lake-level fluctuations. However, imprecise radiocarbon dates of ridge formation have frustrated development of dependable chronologies from which information about variation in the frequency of ridge formation and inferred climate fluctuations can be obtained. The resolution and precision of radiocarbon chronologies can be improved with AMS 14C dates of roots and rhizomes of plant species associated with the formation and growth of the sand-dune caps of breach ridges. These dates reliably estimate the timing of shore progradation when the base of the previously established beach ridge becomes inundated by the water table. An AMS radiocarbon chronology of beach-ridge formation in northern Lake Michigan shows that information about variation in the frequency of ridge formation is important for paleoclimatic interpretation.
