Ina recent paper, Lockwood et al. (1991) have used IMP spacecraft and Neutron Monitor data to consider the rigidity dependence of three large Forbush Decreases over the energy range 50 MeV to 30 GeV. Some of their conclusions are extrapolated to higher energies.

In an earlier paper (Duldig, 1987a), one of us discussed the need to consider the presence of isotropic intensity waves when determining the Forbush Decrease spectrum at energies up to a few hundred GeV. Lockwood et al.’s conclusions are discussed in the light of these results.

Studies have been made of the extent to which extragalactic cosmic rays observed at the earth would be deviated by the galactic magnetic field. The distribution of these deviations is presented as a function of observed direction for two field models. Also using these two models, possible extragalactic directions are derived for the cosmic rays detected by the SUGAR giant air shower array as a basis of a possible technique for searching for extragalactic cosmic ray sources.

The low-mass X-ray binary source Cyg X–3 has been extensively observed from radio to ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray energies (i.e., energies >1015eV). In the radio, Cyg X–3 exhibits intense non-thermal outbursts (flares) and a double-sided relativistic jet morphology. Interestingly, at energies above 1 TeV (1012eV), the gamma-ray emission is highly variable and possibly correlated with the radio outbursts. This emission results primarily from the radiative decay of π°-mesons generated in inelastic collisions between relativistic nuclei (predominantly protons) and the surrounding matter. The observed flux of UHE gamma-rays from Cyg X–3 implies that Cyg X–3 is a localised accelerator of such particles.

We propose a model of Cyg X–3 wherein particles expelled by the source are accelerated by Shockwaves in the relativistically expanding jets. Intense flaring episodes then lead to time variations in the ambient particle flux which account for the observed features at UHE energies.

An apparent connection is reported between the magnetic field strengths inside an electron, in newly born pulsars, and the sun. It is argued that the upper limit to the strength of magnetic field which seems to exist is that which would permit emission of a photon at the non-relativistic electron gyrofrequency, with energy of the order of the electron rest mass. The strongest magnetic fields at the surface of polar regions of pulsars conform to this. By equating approximately the rest mass of an electron to its magnetic energy, the same magnetic field is found inside the electron. It is proposed that magnetic field building ‘blocks’ called M-particles are formed by a variant of the electron-positron spin-zero annihilation. The particles become as tightly stacked as possible to form the macroscopic magnetic field of the newly born pulsar. The sun’s present magnetic moment is described by a pulsar-sized object at its centre, with the maximum packing of M-particles. The hypothesis may have a bearing on the formation of magnetic fields in celestial bodies, and on the secular variation of the magnetic fields of the sun and the Earth.

We describe a versatile infrared camera/spectrograph, IRIS, designed and constructed at the Anglo-Australian Observatory for use on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. A variety of optical configurations can be selected under remote control to provide several direct image scales and a few low-resolution spectroscopic formats. Two cross-dispersed transmission echelles are of novel design, as is the use of a modified Bowen-Burch system to provide a fast f/ratio in the widest-field option. The drive electronics includes a choice of readout schemes for versatility, and continuous display when the array is not taking data, to facilitate field acquisition and focusing.

The linearity of the detector has been studied in detail. Although outwardly good, slight nonlinearities prevent removal of fixed-pattern noise from the data without application of a cubic linearising function.

Specific control and data-reduction software has been written. We describe also a scanning mode developed for spectroscopic imaging.

During the solar maximum of 1989–91 an unprecedented sequence of 13 cosmic ray ground-level enhancements (GLEs) was observed by the world-wide neutron monitor network. Of particular interest were two GLEs observed by the Australian network. The 1989 September 29 event was the largest GLE in the space era while the October 22 GLE included an highly anisotropic precursor peak.

Analysis of both these GLEs, taking into account disturbed geomagnetic conditions, shows that the particle arrivals at the earth were unusual. The September 29 GLE had significant particle propagation in the reverse direction and as the particle flux decreased following the peak the spectrum also softened. In contrast, the 1989 October 22 precursor exhibited extreme anisotropy while the particles involved in the main GLE showed a complex temporal structure possibly indicating multiple particle injection at the solar acceleration region.

We have mapped the molecular clouds of Sgr B2 in the 110 → 101 ortho-transition of C3H2 at 18.3 GHz, using the 70-m NASA telescope at Tidbinbilla (beamwidth 55 arcsec). Three clouds show absorption against the Sgr B2 continuum emission at radial velocities of 50, 65 and 80 km s−1. The 65-km s−1 cloud covers most of the observed area (4 × 6 arcmin in right ascension and declination), has a peak optical depth of 2.7 and a corresponding C3H2 column density of 7.6 × 1015 cm−2. The C3H2 fractional abundance relative to H2 is 1.5 × 10−9. The 80-km s−1 cloud, located north of the Sgr B2 continuum peak, has a peak optical depth of 0.9 and a C3H2 column density of 1.9 × 1015 cm−2. The 50-km s−1 cloud is centred 2 arcmin south of the continuum peak; here the minimum optical depth of 0.5 yields a column density of 5.3 × 1014cm−2.

In this paper the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy program at the University of Adelaide is described. VHE gamma rays with energies above ~5 × 1011eV are observed using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. Results from the first three years observations at Woomera and the current upgrading of the telecope are described. The CANGAROO project, a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and a number of Japanese institutions, is also introduced.

Mass-loss has been incorporated into a series of evolutionary calculations of low to intermediate mass stars during Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) evolution. When helium shell flashes occur a superwind phase is a natural consequence of the mass-loss process. The structure of the stellar wind envelopes that result has been computed. The models may explain some previously curious features seen in OH/IR and CO line emission spectra.

There has been considerable interest in the appearance and nature of images on astronomical photographs which may suggest a transient optical event as the source of the image. In particular, much has been made of possible connections between such images and hypothesised optical activity associated with gamma-ray bursters. This paper describes the investigation of such an image, and discusses briefly various hypotheses as to the nature and source of the image under investigation.

The transfer of kinetic energy between cosmic rays and charged dust grains is investigated. The time required for heating of the dust grains due to Coulomb interactions is estimated and compared with the heating time due to ionisation losses by the cosmic rays. Heating of dust grains by cosmic rays is examined in connection with the FIR–radio correlation in galaxies: even for the most favorable conditions, including a high energy density in low-energy, ≲ 100 keV, cosmic rays, the conclusions are equivocal.

We have measured the 2.3 GHz total and correlated flux densities on a baseline of 275 km of all sources in the Parkes catalogue which

1. (i) are south of declination +10°,

2. (ii) have a catalogued 2.7 GHz total flux density exceeding 0.5 Jy, and

3. (iii) have a 2.7/5.0 GHz spectral index flatter than −0.5.

More than 14% of the sample showed visibility amplitudes greater than 0.9, and more than 72% showed visibility amplitudes greater than 0.5. Of the sources with optical or other identifications 79% were quasars. In this paper we briefly summarise the results of this survey.

This paper presents recent stellar evolutionary calculations of the Asymptotic Giant Branch evolution of a 5M⊙ model. It is found that temperatures at the base of the convective envelope reach up to almost 100 million degrees, high enough for much nucleo-synthesis to occur. Some implications are discussed briefly.

Diffusive shock acceleration produces a power law momentum distribution f(p)α p−b, with b ≥ 4 for a single shock, and b = 4 for a single strong shock. It has been shown that the distribution for acceleration at a sequence of identical shocks is flatter, approaching f(p)α p−3 below a high energy knee, for an arbitrarily large number of shocks. We show how this flatter distribution arises and discuss the range of momenta over which it extends after a finite number of shocks.

The Parkes-MIT-NRAO (PMN) 4.85 GHz continuum radio survey of the southern sky was undertaken in 1990 June and November. This survey was performed on the Parkes 64 m telescope using the NRAO seven-beam receiver. A point-source catalogue of 36,640 radio sources has been produced for the Southern Survey zone −87.5° ≤δ ≤ −37° and for the Tropical Survey zone −29° ≤δ ≤ −9.5°. The flux limit of this survey varies with declination and is typically about 30 mJy.

We have begun to cross-correlate the PMN data with sources contained in catalogues compiled at radio, and other, wavelengths. We have found associations for 96% of the PKSCAT90 2700 MHz database sources, and 95% of the Molonglo 408 MHz Catalogue sources within in the PMN Southern and Tropical Survey zones.

A program to identify the optical counterparts of PMN Southern Survey point sources, S4.85 GHz ≥ 70 mJy, using the COSMOS database, is under way. To facilitate this programme we are improving the positional accuracy of PMN sources with observations made at the Australia Telescope National Facility compact array. We have developed a new “snapshot” mode of observing to process the large number of sources (~ 8000) in our sample. It is possible to obtain accurate positions from three snapshots efficiently with a total integration of < 3 minutes.

Some results of spot modelling for 18 light curves of AB Dor are presented, covering the period 1980-1992. Using the technique of Budding and Zeilik (1987) to determine spot parameters, it is shown that photospheric spots on this star tend to form in one of two longitude belts separated by approximately 180 degrees. This can be compared to the similar active longitudes proposed by Zeilik et al.(1988, 1989) for the RS CVn stars SV Cam and RT And. The change in overall light level of AB Dor over the past 12 years indicates the possibility of a solar-type spot cycle although more photometric observations will be needed to confirm this.

Although stars can be approximated very satisfactorily by spherical models, it is clear from observations of star forming regions that the break-up of molecular gas to form proto-stars is a highly complex process that cannot be approximated simply. As a consequence, the theoretical picture of fragmentation, which is based on assuming that fragmentation occurs in uniform, static, isothermal clouds, is too crude to provide a guide to the star formation process. The alternative is to simulate the fragmentation process numerically with the ultimate aim of evolving the gas to proto-stars. The difficulties involved with this procedure are discussed in this paper. We also discuss our proposed solution to this problem, together with a very preliminary calculation.

A fully-steerable 3.7 metre radiotelescope has been developed as an aid to undergraduate teaching. By using commercially available domestic satellite television components, excellent performance can be achieved at very low cost. The telescope is to be fully computer controlled, and has interchangeable feed horns and low-noise amplifiers for 21 cm, 2.5 cm and 7.5 cm. Experiments will include measurement of the surface temperature of the moon and Venus and of the effective temperature of the sun, plus observation of the brightest thermal and non-thermal galactic sources.

The reappearance of radio emission from SN 1987A is discussed. We propose a model involving synchrotron radiation from electrons which are accelerated when the expanding supernova shock wave runs into a density jump in the circumstellar material, and which then expand adiabatically.

This paper discusses the observation of molecular hydrogen line emission outside near-infrared wavelengths, and in particular the opportunities afforded to molecular astrophysics by studies in the mid- and far-infrared.
