We study the weak stability index of an immersion ϕ: M → Sn+1 (1) ⊂ Rn+2 of an n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We prove that the weak stability index of a compact hypersurface M with constant scalar curvature in Sn+1 (1), which is not totally umbilical, is greater than or equal to n + 2 if the mean curvature H1 and H3 are constant, and that the equality holds if and only if M is . As an application, we show that the weak stability index of an n-dimensional compact hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in Sn+1 (1), which is neither totally umbilical nor a Clifford hypersurface, is greater than or equal to 2n + 4 if the mean curvature H1 and H3 are constant.

We derive new formulae that provide equivalent quasi-norms on Lorentz spaces.

We study a connection between the L2 average decay of the Fourier transform of functions with respect to a given measure and the Hausdorff behaviour of that measure.

Given a complete m-primary ideal J in a local regular two-dimensional ring (R,m), we describe every adjacent complete ideal above J as the integral closure of some ideal (f, g) for suitable f, g associated to J. We also provide a geometrical procedure that gives its base points, thus determining its equisingularity class. We decompose the set IJ of these adjacent ideals in terms of the Rees valuations of J. As a consequence, we obtain a geometrical characterization of the finiteness of IJ.

We consider the nonlinear Dirac equation

The potential function V satisfies the conditions that the essential spectrum of the Dirac operator is and this Dirac operator has infinitely many eigenvalues in (−1, 1) accumulating at 1. This potential function V may change sign in ℝ3 and contains the classical Coulomb potential V (x) = −γ/|x| with γ > 0 as a special case. The nonlinearity F satisfies the resonance-type condition lim. Under some additional conditions on V and F, we prove that this equation has infinitely many solutions.

We obtain intertwining dilation theorems for non-commutative regular domains 𝒟f and non-commutative varieties 𝒱J in B(𝓗)n, which generalize Sarason and Szőkefalvi-Nagy and Foiaş's commutant lifting theorem for commuting contractions. We present several applications including a new proof for the commutant lifting theorem for pure elements in the domain 𝒟f (respectively, variety 𝒱J ) as well as a Schur-type representation for the unit ball of the Hardy algebra associated with the variety 𝒱J. We provide Andô-type dilations and inequalities for bi-domains 𝒟f ×c 𝒟g consisting of all pairs (X,Y ) of tuples X := (X1,…, Xn1) ∊ 𝒟f and Y := (Y1,…, Yn2) ∊ 𝒟g that commute, i.e. each entry of X commutes with each entry of Y . The results are new, even when n1 = n2 = 1. In this particular case, we obtain extensions of Andô's results and Agler and McCarthy's inequality for commuting contractions to larger classes of commuting operators. All the results are extended to bi-varieties 𝒱J1×c 𝒱J2, where 𝒱J1 and 𝒱J2 are non-commutative varieties generated by weak-operator-topology-closed two-sided ideals in non-commutative Hardy algebras. The commutative case and the matrix case when n1 = n2 = 1 are also discussed.

We study the multiplicity and concentration of complex-valued solutions for a fractional magnetic Schrödinger equation involving a scalar continuous electric potential satisfying a local condition and a continuous nonlinearity with subcritical growth. The main results are obtained by applying a penalization technique, generalized Nehari manifold method and Ljusternik–Schnirelman theory. We also prove a Kato's inequality for the fractional magnetic Laplacian which we believe to be useful in the study of other fractional magnetic problems.

We prove monotonicity properties of positive weak solutions to – Δpu = f(u) in half-spaces for the case in which (2N + 2)/(N + 2) < p < 2 when zero Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed. The model nonlinearity is given by f(s) := sq − λsm with q > m ≥ p − 1 and λ > 0.

A theorem is proven for kth-order polynomial finite-difference equations that guarantees the divergence of solutions. A ‘basin of divergence’ is characterized and an order of divergence is provided. The basin of divergence is shown to depend on k independent parameters. An unconventional compactification method is used. Applications include the multi-step method in the numerical integration of ordinary differential equations, quadratic equations and the Henon map.

In feedback stabilization studies, a control scheme is designed so that the ‘state’ of the system decays with a designated rate as t → ∞. Thus, any linear functional of the state also decays with at least the same decay rate. We study a class of linear parabolic systems, and show the existence of a feedback control scheme with a specific property such that some non-trivial linear functionals decay faster than the state. In constructing the control scheme, we also solve the new problem of an arbitrary allocation of the eigenvalues of some coefficient matrix which is subject to constraint, and give the necessary and sufficient condition in terms of controllability and observabililty assumptions. This is an essential extension of the celebrated 1967 theory of pole allocation by W. M. Wonham.

In this paper we give a multiplier theorem for one-sided Hardy spaces which generalizes the results given by Strömberg and Torchinsky for two-sided weights. Also we state the version with a Sawyer's weight ω.

We study the semilinear elliptic inequality –Δu ≥ φ(δK (x))f(u) in ℝN / K, where φ, f are positive and non-increasing continuous functions. Here K ⊂ ℝN (N ≥ 3) is a compact set with finitely many components, each of which is either the closure of a C2 domain or an isolated point, and δK (x) = dist(x, ∂K). We obtain optimal conditions in terms of φ and f for the existence of C2-positive solutions. Under these conditions we prove the existence of a minimal solution and we investigate its behaviour around ∂K as well as the removability of the (possible) isolated singularities.

Polynomial vector fields which admit a prescribed Darboux integrating factor are quite well understood when the geometry of the underlying curve is non-degenerate. In the general setting, morphisms of the affine plane may remove degeneracies of the curve, and thus allow more structural insight. In the present paper we establish some properties of integrating factors subjected to morphisms, and we discuss in detail one particular class of morphisms related to finite reflection groups. The results indicate that degeneracies for the underlying curve generally impose additional restrictions on vector fields admitting a given integrating factor.

For any N ⩾ 1 and sufficiently small ε > 0, we find a positive solution of a nonlinear elliptic equation

when lim|x| → ∞V(x) = m > 0 and some optimal conditions on f are satisfied. Furthermore, we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the solution as ε → 0.

We consider the problem $-\text{div}(p(x)\nabla u)=\lambda{u}+\alpha|u|^{r-1}u$ in $\varOmega$, $\partial u/\partial\nu=Q(x)|u|^{q-2}u$ on $\partial\varOmega$, where $\varOmega$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $N\geq3$, $q=2(N-1)/(N-2)$ and $2<r<q$. Under some conditions on $\partial\varOmega$, $p$, $Q$, $\lambda$, $\alpha$ and the mean curvature at some point $x_0$, we prove the existence of solutions of the above problem. We use variational arguments, namely the concentration–compactness principle, min–max principle and the mountain-pass theorem.

Let X ⊂ ℂn be an equidimensional complex algebraic set and let f: X → ℂ be a polynomial function. For each c ∈ ℂ, we define the global Brasselet number of f at c, a global counterpart of the Brasselet number defined by the authors in a previous work, and the Brasselet number at infinity of f at c. Then we establish several formulas relating these numbers to the topology of X and the critical points of f.

We are concerned with an elliptic problem which describes a mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence of vortices with variable intensities. In the first part of the paper, we describe the blow-up picture and highlight the differences from the standard mean field equation as we observe non-quantization phenomenon. In the second part, we discuss the Moser–Trudinger inequality in terms of the blow-up masses and get the existence of solutions in a non-coercive regime by means of a variational argument, which is based on some improved Moser–Trudinger inequalities.
