We consider a class of Schrödinger operators on ${\open R}^N$ with radial potentials. Viewing them as self-adjoint operators on the space of radially symmetric functions in $L^2({\open R}^N)$, we show that the following properties are generic with respect to the potential:

1. (P1) the eigenvalues below the essential spectrum are nonresonant (i.e., rationally independent) and so are the square roots of the moduli of these eigenvalues;

2. (P2) the eigenfunctions corresponding to the eigenvalues below the essential spectrum are algebraically independent on any nonempty open set.

Using a standard theory of differential operators in Lebesgue spaces, we re-prove and generalize some results of Chernyavskaya and Shuster, giving (mostly sufficient) conditions that minimal operators determined by expressions of the form −(ry′)′ + qy with domain and range in possibly different Lp spaces on intervals with at least one singular endpoint have bounded inverses.

We develop an algebraic approach to constructing short-time asymptotic expansions of solutions of a class of abstract semilinear evolution equations. The expansions are typically valid for both the solution of the equation and its gradient. We apply a perturbation approach based on the symbolic calculus of pseudo-differential operators and heat kernel methods. The construction is explicit and can be done to arbitrary order. All results are rigorously formulated in terms of Banach algebras. As an application we obtain a novel approach to finding approximate solutions of Markovian backward stochastic differential equations.

Let S11× V1 be a direct product of a cyclic monoid S11with S1 not a group, and a semigroup V1 with an adjoined identity. We prove thatboth the lattice of congruences on (S11 × V1)/{(1,1)} and the lattice of congruences on (S11 × V1) are neither lower semimodular nor uppersemimodular. We then prove that the lattice of congruences on a free finitely generated commutative semigroup with more than one generator is neither lower semimodular nor upper semimodular.

For a Dirac system on the line, we study the Jost solutions and the existence of half-bound states. A characterisation of this phenomenon is given in terms of the M(λ)-function, which supplements a well-known spectral characterisation for the system. As a corollary, we deduce the spectral density behaviour at the spectral gap endpoints, which is shown to depend on the possible existence of half-bound states.

Complex and chaotic structures in certain dynamical systems in biology arise as a consequence of noncomplete integrability of two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems. A study of this problem is made using Ziglin theory and implemented with the aid of the Kovacic algorithm.

In this paper we consider equichordal curves in ℝn. We extend the notion of chordal area to all equichordal curves and introduce a notion of *-chordal area. We establish results connected with the length, *-chordal area and extended chordal area. Moreover, we give a Crofton-type integral formula for plane equichordal curves and derive an isoperimetric inequality for *-chordal area. The paper is based on the results of F. J. Craveiro de Carvalho and S. A. Robertson [2].

The behaviour of heat transfer and skin friction is analysed in a compressible laminar boundary layer with external velocity Ue(x)(l + α sin ωt The Mach number M is assumed small but finite so that high frequency flows (s ≫1) in which c =αγM2s/2 = O(1) are considered. Solutions, obtained by matching in the Stokes and Prandtl layers, involve summation of Fourier-like series to give the dominant terms in the heat transfer and skin friction. Results, for c =½, verify that a previous approximate method gives a reasonable description of unsteady heat transfer and skin friction; forc =1 there is a substantial increase in amplitude of heat transfer but little change of phase.

The singular limit as one diffusion coefficient approaches zero is considered for travelling wave solutions to a pair f reaction diffusion equations. An explicit criterion determining the sign of the wave speed is obtained. The limit behaviour turns out to be of a different nature for positive and negative wave speed. Different techniques, which may be applicable to a range of examples, are needed in the two cases.

The preparation of 1-benzhydrylnaphthalene, 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-1-benzoylnaphthalene, and 1-diphenylmethylenetetralin is described.

Several properties of symmetric matrices and positive definite matrices are derived. These are used to improve an estimate given for regular solutions of the n-metaharmonic differential equation by Chow and Dunninger [1].

The positivity of solutions of initial-boundary value problems for weakly-coupled semilinear parabolic or elliptic systems of equations is studied. Conditions on the coupling terms are described which ensure that the solutions of the parabolic systems remain positive whenever the initial conditions are positive. For elliptic systems involving a parameter, conditions on the coupling terms are described which imply that solution branches which contain a positive solution, in fact, contain only positive solutions. Applications of these theorems to certain reaction-diffusion equations arising in the modelling of biological phenomena are given.

In this paper, we investigate the Dirichlet eigenvalue problems of the poly-Laplacian with any order and the quadratic polynomial operator of the Laplacian. We give some estimates for lower bounds of the sums of their first k eigenvalues.

We present self-contained proofs of the stability of the constants in the volume doubling property and the Poincaré and Sobolev inequalities for Riemannian approximations in Carnot groups. We use an explicit Riemannian approximation based on the Lie algebra structure that is suited for studying nonlinear subelliptic partial differential equations. Our approach is independent of the results obtained in [11].

New necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the quantization of a class of periodic second-order non-homogeneous ordinary differential equations in the complex plane. The problem is studied from the viewpoint of complex oscillation theory first developed in works by Bank and Laine and Gundersen and Steinbart. We show that, when a solution is complex non-oscillatory (finite exponent of convergence of zeros), then the solution, which can be written as special functions, must degenerate. This gives a necessary and sufficient condition when the Lommel function has finitely many zeros in every branch, and this is a type of quantization for the non-homogeneous differential equation. The degenerate solutions are polynomial/rational-type functions, which are of independent interest. In particular, this shows that complex non-oscillatory solutions of this class of differential equations are equivalent to the subnormal solutions considered in a recent paper by Chiang and Yu. In addition to the asymptotics of special functions, the other main idea that we apply in our proof is a classical result by Wright that gives precise asymptotic locations of large zeros of a functional equation.

In order to investigate envelopes for singular surfaces, we introduce one- and two-parameter families of framed surfaces and the basic invariants, respectively. By using the basic invariants, the existence and uniqueness theorems of one- and two-parameter families of framed surfaces are given. Then we define envelopes of one- and two-parameter families of framed surfaces and give the existence conditions of envelopes which are called envelope theorems. As an application of the envelope theorems, we show that the projections of singular solutions of completely integrable first-order partial differential equations are envelopes.
