All the Fibonacci groups in the family F(2, n) have been either fully identified or determined to be infinite, bar one, namely F(2, 9). Using computer-aided techniques it is shown that F(2, 9) has a quotient of order 152.5741, and an explicit matrix representation for a quotient of order 152.518 is given. This strongly suggests that F(2, 9) is infinite, but no proof of such a claim is available.

This paper is concerned with the structure of M = Maps(G), the near-ring of all mappings from a group G to itself which commute with a group S* of automorphisms of G. Here S is S* together with the zero endomorphism. Necessary and sufficient conditions on the pair (G, S) are obtained for M to be (i) regular, (ii) unit regular, (iii) an equivalence near-ring. These conditions take a very simple form. In the case (iii), the two-sided M-subgroups of M are determined. The next result shows that under suitable conditions, M is a simple near-ring. A definition of transitivity is given for subnear-rings of M, and some properties of transitive near-rings are proved. Finally two examples are given to show that all the classes of near-rings considered are distinct.

Let B be a complete Boolean algebra of projections on a complex Banach space X and let (B) denote the closed algebra of operators generated by B in the norm topology. It is shown that there is a complex Hilbert space H, a complete Boolean algebra B0 of self-adjoint projections on H, and an algebraic isomorphism of B onto B. This isomorphism is bicontinuous when B and B are endowed with the norm topologies, the weak operator topologies or the ultraweak operator topologies. It is also bicontinuous on bounded sets with respect to the strong operator topologies on B and B. As an application, it is shown that the weak and ultraweak operator topologies in fact coincide on B.

It is established that under certain restrictions the solution u of the equation uxy − gu = 0 satisfying u(x, 0) = p(x) and u(0,y) = q(y) in ([0, = ∞) × [0, ∞), changes sign in where (X, Y) is any point in the relevant region.

Formulae are derived for the first two approximations to the radiation pattern of a penetrable body in the long wavelength limit. They are expressed in terms of a solution of Laplace's equation satisfying certain boundary conditions. Various inequalities and principles which help fix this solution are given.

A stability condition is derived for solutions of the Von Kárman-Batchelor equations for the flow of a viscous, incompressible fluid between rotating, coaxial (infinite) disks. The rigid motion solution which arises when the angular velocities of the disks are equal is stable with respect to perturbations which go to zero sufficiently rapidly at infinity, for all values of the Reynolds number. If the angular velocities are sufficiently close the stability condition derived applies to perturbations whose “deformation energy” is sufficiently confined to a “core” region.

The theories of fractional calculus and of the Hankel transform developed in for the spaces F′p, μ of generalised functions are used to study distributional analogues of dual integral equations of Titchmarsh type. These are shown to have infinitely many solutions in F′p, μ under very general conditions on the parameters involved. These results are used to study the corresponding classical problem in weighted Lp spaces. Existence and uniqueness of classical solutions are investigated and examples given of both uniqueness and non-uniqueness for the classical problem.

The construction of the approximate solution within a rectangle of a singular elliptic problem is discussed. It is found that, provided the boundary data satisfy certain continuity conditions at the corners of the rectangle, ordinary boundary layers and parabolic boundary layers only are necessary to describe the solution. A correction term, however, has to be added to the solution if the continuity conditions on the boundary data are not satisfied.

There are given conditions on M (or certain operators related to M) which imply convergence of a certain iteratively generated sequence to a solution to this problem. The equation Cu = g represents an inhomogeneous system of linear differential equations (ordinary, partial or functional) and the condition P(u − w) = u − w is an abstract representation of inhomogeneous boundary conditions for u.

An attempt is made to provide a sound basis for the method of singular eigenfunction expansions which has been in vogue in linear transport theory for some decades. The procedure is exemplified by a treatment of the one-dimensional neutron transport equation with a degenerate scattering function. Full-range as well as half-range results are derived. At the end of the paper the implications for a certain matrix factorization problem are given.

If the diffusion matrix coefficient of an Itô stochastic differential equation is everywhere non-singular, then the corresponding Chapman-Kolmogorov semi-group may be defined on L∼(Rn), the space of Lebesgue equivalence classes of essentially bounded Borei measurable functions. However, if the diffusion matrix is singular at some points of Rn, it is not clear that this can always be done. We show that in certain situations it is possible to do so.

The cubic surfaces in, save for the elliptic cone, are, whatever their singularities, projections of del Pezzo's non-singular surface F, of order 9 in. It is explained how, merely by specifying the geometrical relation of the vertex of projection to F, each cubic surface is obtainable “at a stroke”, without using spaces of intermediate dimensions.

A class of systems of two-dimensional singular integral equations with even kernels over bounded domains in the plane is studied. The applications include integral equations with the Bergman kernel function. The method of investigation is the following: the integral equation is reduced to a Riemann type boundary value problem for a first order elliptic system. This is solved by means of one-dimensional singular integral equations over the boundary curve. An adjoint problem is formulated, the Noetherian theorems are established, and a formula for the index is given.
