Using ISAAC/VLT, we have obtained individual spectra of all NIR-bright stars in the central 2′ × 2′ of the cluster Westerlund 1 (Wd 1) with a resolution of R ≈ 9000 at a central wavelength of 2.30 μm. This allowed us to determine radial velocities of ten post-main-sequence stars, and from these values a velocity dispersion. Assuming virial equilibrium, the dispersion of σ = 8.4 km/s leads to a total dynamical cluster mass of 1.25 × 105M⊙, comparable to the photometric mass of the cluster. There is no extra-virial motion which would have to be interpreted as a signature of cluster expansion or dissolution.

The class ‘bulges’ contains objects with very different formation and evolution paths and very different properties. I review two types of ‘bulges’, the boxy/peanut bulges (B/Ps) and the discy bulges. The former are parts of bars seen edge-on, have their origin in vertical instabilities of the disc and are somewhat shorter in extent than bars. Their stellar population is similar to that of the inner part of the disc from which they formed. Discy bulges have a disc-like outline, i.e., seen face-on they are circular or oval and seen edge-on they are thin. Their extent is of the order of 5 times smaller than that of the boxy/peanut bulges. They form from the inflow of mainly gaseous material to the centre of the galaxy and from subsequent star formation. They thus contain a lot of young stars and gas. Bulges of different types often coexist in the same galaxy. I review the main known results on these two types of bulges and present new simulation results.

B/Ps form about 1Gyr after the bar, via a vertical buckling. At that time the bar strength decreases, its inner part becomes thicker – forming the peanut or boxy shape – and the ratio increases. A second buckling episode is seen in simulations with strong bars, also accompanied by a thickening of the peanut and a weakening of the bar. The properties of the B/Ps correlate strongly with those of the bar: stronger bars have stronger peanuts, a more flat-topped vertical density distribution and have experienced more bucklings.

I also present simulations of disc galaxy formation, which include the formation of a discy bulge. Decomposition of their radial density profile into an exponential disc and a Sérsic bulge gives realistic values for the disc and bulge scale-lengths and mass ratios, and a Sérsic shape index of the order of 1.

It is thus clear that classical bulges, B/P bulges and discy bulges are three distinct classes of objects and that lumping them together can lead to confusion. To avoid this, the two latter could be called B/P features and inner discs, respectively.

Interferometry in the near IR aims at providing imaging resolution on the mas scale, and astrometry at the few μas level, from ground based infrastructures using current telescope technology. To take advantage of simultaneous combination of four to eight telescopes, an international consortium is proposing to ESO the development of the VLTI Spectro-Imager. One of the key sub-systems, to measure and correct the atmospheric perturbations relative to the beam phase, is the fringe tracker, aimed at providing the science combiner with long, stable observing conditions. The fringe tracker function in interferometer is equivalent to adaptive optics for conventional telescopes. The fringe tracker concept under study, using minimum redundancy combination and bulk optics, is described.

We report the results of a blind search for 22 GHz water masers in two regions, covering approximately half a square degree, within the G 333.2–0.6 giant molecular cloud. The complete search of the two regions was carried out with the 26 m Mount Pleasant radio telescope and resulted in the detection of nine water masers, five of which are new detections. Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of these detections have allowed us to obtain positions with arcsecond accuracy, allowing meaningful comparison with infrared and molecular data for the region. We find that for the regions surveyed there are more water masers than either 6.7 GHz methanol, or main-line OH masers. The water masers are concentrated towards the central axis of the star formation region, in contrast to the 6.7 GHz methanol masers which tend to be located near the periphery. The colours of the GLIMPSE point sources associated with the water masers are slightly less red than those associated with methanol masers. Statistical investigation of the properties of the 13CO and 1.2 mm dust clumps with and without associated water masers shows that the water masers are associated with the more massive, denser and brighter 13CO and 1.2 mm dust clumps. We present statistical models that can predict those 13CO and 1.2 mm dust clumps likely to have associated water masers.

Evidence suggesting an observable magnetic interaction between a star and its hot Jupiter (Porb < 7 days, a < 0.1 AU, Mpsini > 0.2 MJ) appears as a cyclic variation of stellar activity synchronized to the planet's orbit. HD 179949 has been observed almost every year since 2001. Synchronicity of the Ca II H & K emission with the orbit is clearly seen in four out of six epochs, while rotational modulation with Prot=7 days is apparent in the other two seasons. We observe a similar phenomenon on υ And, which displays rotational modulation (Prot=12 days) in September 2005, while in 2002 and 2003 variations appear to correlate with the planet's orbital period. This on/off nature of star-planet interaction (SPI) in the two systems is likely a function of the changing stellar magnetic field structure throughout its activity cycle. The tentative correlation between this activity in the 13 stars we have observed to date and the ratio of Mpsini to the planet's rotation period, a quantity proportional to the hot Jupiter's magnetic moment, first presented in Shkolnik et al. (2005) remains viable. This work furthers the characterization of SPI, improving its potential as a probe of extrasolar planetary magnetic fields.

One of the typical features shown by observations of solar prominence oscillations is that they are quickly damped in time by one or several not well-known mechanisms. In addition, recent high resolution observations have revealed that the prominence fine structures, called fibrils, can oscillate with their own periods, independently from the rest of the prominence. The main aim of the present work is to study the attenuation of oscillations supported by a single prominence fibril. We consider an equilibrium made of a prominence plasma Cartesian slab of finite width embedded in a coronal medium, and assume non-adiabatic effects (thermal conduction, radiation losses and heating) as damping mechanisms. The magnetic field is taken uniform and parallel to the slab axis. We find that the efficiency of the non-adiabatic effects as damping mechanisms is different for each magnetoacoustic mode. The obtained values of the damping time are compatible with those observed in the case of the slow modes, but the fast modes are much less attenuated.

Seismic estimates of core overshoot have been derived from extensive high-precision photometric and spectroscopic ground-based (multisite) campaigns for five main-sequence B-type stars. For three of these, the ratio of the near-core rotation frequency to the surface rotation frequency could be estimated as well, from the identified oscillation modes. We summarise these seismic results obtained for B stars. Now that the technique of asteroseismology was proven to work for probing the interior of massive stars, we expect a drastic increase in the precision of the structure parameters from the space missions CoRoT and Kepler, as well as from currently ongoing ground-based campaigns, in the coming years.

The evolution of angular momentum is a key to our understanding of star formation and stellar evolution. The rotational evolution of solar-mass stars is mostly controlled by magnetic interaction with the circumstellar disc and angular momentum loss through stellar winds. Major differences in the internal structure of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs – they are believed to be fully convective throughout their lives, and thus should not operate a solar-type dynamo – may lead to major differences in the rotation and activity of these objects. Here, we report on observational studies to understand the rotational evolution of the very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs.

Debris sent into the intergalactic medium during tidal collisions has received much attention as it can tell us about several fundamental properties of galaxies, in particular their missing mass, both in the form of cosmological Dark Matter and so-called Lost Baryons.

High velocity encounters, which are common in clusters of galaxies, are able to produce faint tidal debris that may appear as star–less, free floating HI clouds. These may be mistaken for Dark Galaxies, a putative class of gaseous, dark matter (DM) dominated, objects which for some reason never managed to form stars. VirgoHI21, in the Virgo Cluster, is by far the most spectacular and most discussed Dark Galaxy candidate so far detected in HI surveys. We show here that it is most likely made out of material expelled 750 Myr ago from the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4254 during its fly–by at about 1000 km s−1 by a massive intruder. Our numerical model of the collision is able to reproduce the main characteristics of the system: in particular the absence of stars, and its prominent velocity gradient. Originally attributed to the gas being in rotation within a massive dark matter halo, we find it instead to be consistent with a combination of simple streaming motion plus projection effects (Duc & Bournaud, 2007).

Based on our multi-wavelength and numerical studies of galaxy collisions, we discuss several ways to identify a tidal origin in a Dark Galaxy candidate such as optical and millimetre–wave observations to reveal a high metallicity and CO lines, and more importantly, kinematics indicating the absence of a prominent Dark Matter halo. We illustrate the method using another HI system in Virgo, VCC 2062, which is most likely a Tidal Dwarf Galaxy (Duc et al., 2007).

Now, whereas tidal debris should not contain any dark matter from the halo of their parent galaxies, it may exhibit missing mass in the form of dark baryons, unaccounted for by classical observations, as recently found in the collisional ring of NGC 5291 (Bournaud et al., 2007) and probably in the TDG VCC 2062. These “Lost Baryons” must originally have been located in the disks of their parent galaxies.

Boxy/peanut bulges in disk galaxies have been associated to stellar bars. In this talk, we discuss the different properties of such bulges and their relation with the corresponding bar, using a very large sample of a few hundred numerical N-body simulations. We present and inter-compare various methods of measuring the boxy/peanut bulge properties, namely its strength, shape and possible asymmetry. Some of these methods can be applied to both simulations and observations. Our final goal is to get correlations that will allow us to obtain information on the boxy/peanut bulge for a galaxy viewed face-on as well as information on the bars of galaxies viewed edge-on.

We evaluate a numerical model on the thermal evolution of terrestrial planets to estimate life-time of planetary intrinsic magnetic field for various mass planets. In this model, we take into account the pressure-dependency of density profile of the planet by using Birch-Murnaghun equation of state, and simulate thermal evolution of the planet by means of mixing length theory. According to our numerical results, the planetary mass must be between 0.1 and 1.4 Earth mass to sustain the intrinsic magnetic field for 4.5Gyr. If existence of intrinsic magnetic field were a key factor to make the planet habitable, the mass range above indicates that super-Earths would not be habitable.

We review the theory of the formation and gravitational collapse of magnetized molecular cloud cores, leading to the birth of T Tauri stars surrounded by quasi-Keplerian disks whose accretion is driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Some loss of magnetic flux during the collapse results typically in a dimensionless mass-to-flux ratio for the star plus disk of λ0 ≈ 4. Most of the mass ends up in the star, while almost all of the flux and the angular momentum ends up in the disk; therefore, a known mass for the central star implies a computable flux in the surrounding disk. A self-contained theory of the MRI that drives the viscous/resistive spreading in such circumstances then yields the disk radius needed to contain the flux trapped in the disk as a function of the age t. This theory yields analytic predictions of the distributions with distance ϖ from the central star of the surface density Σ(ϖ), the vertical magnetic field Bz(ϖ), and the (sub-Keplerian) angular rotation rate Ω (ϖ). We discuss the implications of this picture for disk-winds, X-winds, and funnel flows, and we summarize the global situation by giving the energy and angular-momentum budget for the overall problem.

Over the past ten years, there has been a revolution in our understanding of massive young stellar clusters in the Galaxy. Initially, there were no known examples having masses >104, yet we now know that there are at least a half dozen such clusters in the Galaxy. In all but one case, the masses have been determined through infrared observations. Several had been identified as clusters long ago, but their massive natures were only recently determined. Presumably, we are just scratching the surface, and we might look forward to having statistically significant samples of coeval massive stars at all important stages of stellar evolution in the near future. I review the efforts that have led to this dramatic turn of events and the growing sample of young massive clusters in the Galaxy.

Division IV organizes astronomers studying the characterization, interior and atmospheric structure of stars of all masses, ages and chemical compositions.

The authors analyse sources of false Doppler velocity signals of high frequencies (10 mHz and higher) in observations of filaments. In ground-based observations, spectrograph noise and image shifting at the spectrograph entrance slit are the main causes of the false signal. It is shown that using differential methods and telluric lines as reference lines significantly reduces the influence of the first factor. Periodical image shifting along the spectrograph slit can be compensated for during data reduction. In some cases detected high-frequency oscillations appear to be real.

In this work we report the most sensitive water maser survey towards Bok globules to date, using NASA's 70 m antenna in Robledo de Chavela (Spain). We observed 207 positions within the Clemens & Barvainis catalog that show indications of possible star formation or with a high probability of harboring a young stellar object. With this survey we have increased the number of Bok globules known to present water maser emission from three to nine. We have complemented these results with interferometric high-angular resolution observations towards some of our detections.

We report simulations of the formation of a giant disc galaxy from cosmological initial conditions. Two sets of initial conditions are used, initially smooth density for both gas and stars, representing the Warm dark Matter scenario, and an initially fluctuating density representing the standard spectrum for the Cold dark Matter scenario. For the WDM initial conditions, the galaxy has a population of long lived dwarf satellites at z = 0, with orbits close to a plane coincident with that of the giant galaxy disc. The detailed properties of these dwarfs mimic closely the observed properties of Local Group dwarfs with respect to mass, and kinematics. However they do not have individual dark matter halos, but orbit in the nearly spherical dark matter halo of the giant galaxy. The reason for this is that the initial population of dwarf dark matter haloes, which form during the initial collapse phase, all merge into the halo of the giant galaxy within a few to several Gyears, while the long lived dwarfs form as a secondary population by gravitational collapse of high angular momentum gas in the outer reaches of the giants proto-galactic disc. Due to their late formation and their more distant orbits, they survive until the present epoch as individual dwarf galaxies at radii 20-50kpc from the giants centre. For CDM initial conditions there are many more dwarf satellites at z = 0, some of which form early on as gas condensations in DM sub-halos, and survive with these individual DM halos till z = 0 due to their being sufficiently well bound to avoid merging with the main galaxy. However even in this case some second generation satellites form as initially gas only objects, just as for the smooth initial conditions of WDM.

Tidal vertical variations have been removed in astrometric observations, but the non-tidal ones remain unknown. From the repeated observations of gravimetric networks in China, the non-tidal vertical variations at Beijing-Tangshan and West Yunnan are determined, which are of the order of 0.″2. Astrometric results, including past star catalogs, based on these observations should be corrected.

We present a volume-limited sample (d < 850 pc) of open clusters in the Galaxy identified from our studies on galactic open clusters based on data from the all-sky catalogue ASCC-2.5 with absolute proper motions and B, V magnitudes of 2.5 million stars. The astrophysical properties of this sample are discussed.
