The evolution of stellar disks is of great importance for understanding many aspects of galaxy formation. In this work we perform stellar population synthesis on radially resolved photometry of 564 disk galaxies from the SDSS DR5, selected to have both spectra of the central regions and photometry. To explore fully the multi-dimensional likelihood space defined by the output parameters of the spectral synthesis, we use Markov Chain Monte Carlo to quantify the expectation values, the uncertainties and the degeneracies of the parameters. We find good agreement between the parameter values obtained using the SDSS broad-band colors and the spectra respectively. In general the derived mean stellar age and the best-fit stellar metallicity decline in value from the galaxy center to the outer regions (around 1.5 half-light radii), based on sub-samples defined by concentration index. We also find that the radial dependency of the stellar population parameters exhibits a significant variation, and this diversity is likely related to morphology and the physics of star formation.

We simulate cosmic chemical enrichment with a hydrodynamical model including supernova and hypernova feedback. We find that the majority of stars in present-day massive galaxies formed in much smaller galaxies at high redshifts, despite their late assembly times. The hypernova feedback drives galactic outflows efficiently in low mass galaxies, and these winds eject heavy elements into the intergalactic medium. The ejected baryon fraction is larger for less massive galaxies, correlates well with stellar metallicity. The observed mass-metallicity relation is well reproduced as a result of the mass-dependent galactic winds.

We discuss the dynamical model of the planet motions and EPM ephemerides.

In order for the magneto-rotational instability to take place, we need a sufficiently ionized disk. Here, we study, besides viscous dissipation, another heating mechanism for the disk that involves the damping of Alfvén waves due to its interaction with dust grains.

We present INPOP06: a new planetary ephemeris.

We will review some recent advances in understanding the evolution of stellar populations in galaxies at relatively higher redshifts (z ≳ 0.5). We will focus on “mass assembly”, “down-sizing” and “high-z zoo” which have been among the most major topics and have seen great observational achievements in the past few years. In particular, wide-field near-infrared surveys, large spectroscopic surveys, and the Spitzer observations at infrared wavelengths, have unveiled underlying stellar masses and dusty star formation in high-z galaxies, which have been crucial in making such recent progresses.

A complementary method to the emission selection of high-redshift galaxies consists in the observation of absorbers along the line of sight toward a background quasar. This selection technique has a constant sensitivity at all redshifts up to z = 6 (i.e. no redshift desert) and allow to select all types of galaxies regardless of their luminosity or star formation rate. The highest column density absorbers, the Damped Lyman-α (DLAs) systems, in particular, can be used to determine the cosmic evolution of HI gas in the Universe, ΩHI, and the global metallicity in the gas phase. Since stars are known to form from HI gas, ΩHI provides an indirect tracer of the history of star formation. Recent results from several parallel VLT programmes aiming at determining the cosmological evolution of the metallicity in the neutral gas phase are presented.

CONDOR, the CO, N+, Deuterium Observations Receiver, is designed to make velocity-resolved observations of the CO, [NII], and p-H2D+ lines in the 1.4 THz (200-240μm) atmospheric windows. CONDOR's first light observations were made with the APEX telescope in November 2005. The CONDOR beam on APEX (at ν = 1.5 THz) was expected to consist of a 4.3″ main beam and a 73″ error beam; this beam structure was verified from scans of Mars. The pointing accuracy, also determined from Mars scans, was better than 7″. The average atmospheric transmission during our Orion observations (elev~57°) was 19 ± 4% along the line-of-sight. A forward efficiency of Feff = 0.8 was determined from sky dips, and observations of the Moon and Mars were used to couple the CONDOR beam to sources of different sizes (ηc = 0.40 and ~0.10, respectively). We present our chemically consistent GALEV Evolutionary Synthesis models for galaxies and point out differences to previous generations of models and their effects on the interpretation of local and high-redshift galaxy data.

Intergalactic HII regions, far from the confines of a galactic disk, represent a mode of star formation in low-density gas outside of galaxies. The figure below (left) shows an R-band continuum image of NGC 1533 from the SINGG Hα survey (Meurer et al. 2006) overlaid with HI contours and the location of three intergalactic HII regions discovered by Ryan-Weber et al. (2004). The HI contours are 1.6, 2.0, 2.4, 2.8, 3.2 and 4.0 ×1020 cm−2 and have a resolution of ~1′. ACS/HRC images of the intergalactic HII regions (right) are composites of UV, V, and I bands. The half-light radii of the clusters associated with regions 1, 2, and 5 are 24.7, 21.7, and 17.0 pc, respectively, at the distance to NGC 1533 (21 Mpc; Tonry et al. 2001). Assuming a Salpeter IMF with Mup = 100, Hα/UV ratios indicate a small number of ionizing O stars relative to the total number of UV-emitting O and B stars. These young (4-6 Myr), intergalactic stellar populations lend valuable insight to our understanding of the methods by which star formation is triggered and may even represent the first episodes of star formation in emerging galaxies.

We discuss an accurate harmonic development of Lunar ephemeris LE-405/406

We analyse a sample of 1,652 elliptical galaxies morphologically selected from the SDSS DR4 with respect to their stellar population properties such as luminosity weighted ages, metallicities and α/Fe element abundance ratios. We confirm and statistically strengthen earlier results that all three stellar population parameters correlate with velocity dispersion, hence galaxy mass. Most surprisingly and differently from previous work, however, these scaling relations turn out to be independent of environmental density for the bulk of the population. This implies that the formation epochs and timescales of the stellar populations in massive galaxies are entirely independent of the environmental density and only driven by galaxy mass. At the low-mass end some fraction of the galaxies show signs of recent star formation on top of the general downsizing trend. It is only the fractional amount of such rejuvenated galaxies that reveals strong dependence with environment. The influence of the environment apparently undergoes a phase transition at about z∼ 1. An early galaxy formation phase without environmental dependence is followed by a rejuvenation phase at redshifts below z∼ 1 affecting mostly low-mass galaxies, during which the environment plays a crucial role.

Major mergers of gas-rich galaxies, each comparable in mass to the Milky Way, are rare at the present epoch. These events were readily identifed, however, two decades ago in far-infrared sky surveys (Soifer et al. 1986, 1987). Removal of the dust enshrouding these starbursts was almost immediately proposed as an evolutionary path to quasar formation (Sanders 1988). Recent measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion, rotation speed, and stellar surface brightness profile of these mergers suggest ULIRGs are indeed progenitors of field elliptical galaxies (Genzel et al. 2001; Tacconi et al. 2002).

We present a detailed stellar population analysis of 27 massive elliptical galaxies within 4 very rich clusters at redshift z∼0.2. We obtained accurate estimates of the mean luminosity-weighted ages and relative abundances of CN, Mg and Fe as functions of the galaxy velocity dispersion, σ. Our results are compatible with a scenario in which the stellar populations of massive elliptical galaxies, independently of their environment and mass, had formation timescales shorter than ∼1 Gyr. This result implies that massive elliptical galaxies have evolved passively since, at least, as long ago as z∼2. For a given galaxy mass the duration of star formation is shorter in those galaxies belonging to more dense environments. Finally, we show that the abundance ratios [CN/Fe] and [Mg/Fe] are the key “chemical clocks” to infer the star formation history timescales in ellipticals. In particular, [Mg/Fe] provides an upper limit for those formation timescales, while [CN/Fe] apperars to be the most suitable parameter to resolve them in elliptical galaxies with σ<300 km s−1.

We consider the possibility to study the nature of MHD turbulence in star-forming regions with three different kinds of polarimetric data, namely, the linear polarization of starlight due to extinction by aligned dust grains, the polarized dust thermal radiation at far infrared or submillimeter wavelengths, and the linear polarization of molecular lines due to the Goldreich-Kylafis effect in the anisotropic MHD medium.

We discuss the present state of the art of the solar quadrupole moment from planetary ephemerides.

The CON+Deuterium Observations Receiver (CONDOR) is a heterodyne receiver that operates between 1250–1530 GHz. Its primary goal is to observe star-forming regions in CO, N+, and H2D+ emission.

In this work we estimated the statistical age of a set of HII galaxies obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Three (SDSS DR3). Applying an inversion method to the observed distribution of an age sensitive parameter such as the equivalent width of (Hα), we estimate the age of the galaxies. We find strong dependence of the age with stellar luminosity, mass and metallicity with the youngest HII galaxies being those with the lowest mass and metallicity. These dependences found among HII galaxies indicate that “downsizing” extends to the low end of the mass distribution of galaxies.

We combine together physical parameters estimates for a large sample of galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Two (SDSS DR2), spanning wide ranges in galaxy properties, in order to provide a census of the physical parameters of galaxies in the local Universe. Stellar metallicities, masses and ages for this sample have been estimated comparing the strengths of selected absorption features in each observed spectrum to a comprehensive Monte Carlo library of star formation histories, following a Bayesian statistical approach. This allows us also to derive the total amount of metals locked up in stars today, and hence the average stellar metallicity of galaxies in the local Universe, finding a value of . We also quantify the relative contribution to the total densities of mass and metals in stars from galaxies with different properties.

We present the proposals of the IAU Division I Working Group on Nomenclature for Fundamental Astronomy (NFA) that was formed at the IAU XXV General Assembly in 2003.
