It has been recently shown by several authors that fragmentation of pre-stellar gas (i.e. at densities from 104 to 1010 particles cm−3 and temperatures of order 10-30 K) depends on the gas thermodynamics much more than it was anticipated in earlier studies, in which only an isothermal behaviour has been assumed for the gas. Here we review the results of a number of numerical hydrodynamic simulations (e.g. Li et al. 2003, Jappsen et al. 2005, Bonnell et al. 2006) in which departure from isothermality has been attempted by employing a polytropic equation of state (eos) with exponent different from unity. In particular, in these studies it has been shown that the dominant fragmentation scale of pre-stellar gas, and hence the peak of the initial mass function (IMF), depends on a polytropic exponent that changes value, from below to above unity, at a critical density (Larson 2005). Furthermore, this piecewise polytropic eos depends on the gas metallicity and fundamental constants. Therefore, the peak of the IMF depends, in turn, also on the gas metallicity and fundamental constants rather than on initial conditions, as it has been previously suggested (e.g. Larson 1995). Hence, we are for the first time in a position to infer theoretically the notion of a universal IMF (at least for its low-mass end).

We also present two test cases in which a non-isothermal eos has been used in the context of smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) numerical simulations. In the first case star formation is triggered by means of low-mass clump collisions. These calculations have shown that clump collisions can be a relatively efficient mechanism for the formation of solar-mass protostars and their lower-mass companions (efficiency greater or of order 20-25%; Kitsionas & Whitworth 2006). We have also found that in such collisions protostars form mainly by fragmentation of dense filaments along which it is likely that pairs of protostars capture each other in close binaries surrounded by circumbinary discs. In the second case, the use of a polytropic eos with a varying exponent appropriate for the metallicity of starburst regions (Spaans & Silk 2000, 2005) is shown to be sufficient to obtain a top heavy IMF similar to that observed e.g. in the Galactic centre (Klessen, Spaans & Jappsen 2006). These are preliminary results in the direction of revisiting earlier isothermal calculations that were resolving all densities up to the opacity limit for fragmentation (e.g. Bate et al. 2002ab, 2003), this time also taking into account the thermal properties of the gas in the density range between 104 and 1010 particles cm−3. The next step would be to include self-consistent radiation transport in the calculations, the first attempts for which are already in the making (e.g. Whitehouse & Bate 2004).

It has been shown quite recently (Morales-Rueda et al. 2003) that dB stars, extreme horizontal branch (EHB) objects in high probability all belong to binary systems. We study in detail the mass and angular momentum loss from the giant progenitors of sdB stars in an attempt to clarify why binarity must be a crucial factor in producing EHB objects. Assuming that the progenitors of EHB objects belong to binaries with initial separations of a roughly a hundred solar radii and fill in their critical Roche lobes while close to the tip of red giant branch, we have found that considerable shrinkage of the orbit can be achieved due to a combined effect of angular momentum loss from the red giant and appreciable accretion on its low mass companion on the hydrodynamical timescale of the donor, resulting in formation of helium WD with masses roughly equal to a half solar mass and thus evading the common envelope stage. A simple approximative analytical formula for mass loss rate from Roche lobe filling giant donor has been proposed depending on mass, luminosity and radius of donor.

We have undertaken a large, multi-colour, photometric, survey of distant (D > 500 kpc) Local Group dwarf galaxies with the Subaru SuprimeCam wide field camera. These data reach to below the horizontal branch level of these systems, to a depth equivalent to earlier HST WFPC2 studies but over an area ∼ 100 times larger, making them ideal for studies of the global stellar content and structural characteristics of these systems. All eight of our targets show radial gradients and spatially distinct, multiple structural components. This implies that dwarf galaxies in general possess multiple stellar components, akin to larger galaxies. Dynamical models of these systems which do not account independently and consistently for each individual density component may be limited in their applicability.

Results of the Venus Express mission to Venus are summarized.

A suggested method is proposed to forecast the general features of the 11- year solar activity principle cycle. It is based upon the count of lengths and durations of spotless events, prevailing in the preceding minimum of the coming new cycle. The method has been successfully applied to predict the strengths and time of rises for the $22^{nd}$ and $23^{rd}$ 11-year cycles. The proposed precursor technique is further developed to make preliminary prediction of the maximum relative sunspot number and the time of rise of the $24^{th}$ 11-year cycle. The predicted values of these parameters are found to be $90.7\pm9.2$ and $4.6 \pm1.2$ year respectively. In addition, neural, Fuzzy neural and genetic algorithms have been also applied for the confirmation of the predicted results. A comparison with the early predictions used by other methods is given.

Optical photometry and radial velocities have been obtained for stars whose near- and mid-infrared colours suggest that they have dusty circumstellar discs; many are RV Tauri variables. A subset of six stars have earlier spectral types and smaller light amplitudes than classical RV Tauri stars. All are spectroscopic binaries, with surprisingly short periods.

Based on the neutron monitor counting rate profiles, soft X-ray emission from GOES, Yohkoh/HXT, RHESSI/HXT, ACE/SIS, and SOHO/LASCO CME catalog, the relationship between the onset time of solar cycle 23 Ground Level Enhancements(GLEs) and solar activity are analyzed. It was found that the correlation between the onset time of GLEs and flare maximum is better than that of the onset time of metric type II radio burst and CME. Average value of the ratio of Fe/O is about 2.65 times of coronal value in the range 30 – 40 MeV/n for all events. If considering the parent flare sites, the situation of proton acceleration in flares, and transport effect from flare sites (if it located in poorly-connected region) to well-connected region, several GLEs onset time are roughly at the peak time of the X-ray.

Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) is a joint project between Japan and Chile for installing and operating a 10 m high precision telescope in the Atacama Desert in order to explore the southern sky through the submillimeter wavelength. We have achieved an accuracy of 19 μm (rms) for the main reflector surface and a stable radio pointing accuracy of about 2 arcsec (rms). A 350 GHz cartridge type SIS mixer receiver achieves good performance with a typical system noise temperature of 150 ~ 250 K in DSB and a main beam efficiency of 0.6 ~ 0.7 during winter nights.

A large scale CO(3-2) imaging survey of nearby galaxies using ASTE is now in progress. One of our goals is to compare our wide area CO(3-2) images with existing CO(1-0) data as well as distributions of massive star formation tracers (i.e., Hα and radio continuum emission) in order to understand the physical mechanism which controls the global star formation properties such as star formation efficiency. Initial CO(3-2) maps of some sample galaxies (M 83, NGC 604 in M 33, NGC 1672, & NGC 7130) are reported.

We present archival optical-IR observations of a number of short period X-ray novae (XRNe). We use these to show that in contrast to the current paradigm, there is likely significant non stellar flux in the infra-red (IR).

Using the Cloudy_3D code (Morisset, this conference), we run a set of models to build a catalog of emission line profiles of PNe. The goal is to cover the main morphologies (spherical, ellipsoidal, bipolar, thin or thick shells) and to compute profiles changing the orientation of the nebula, the expansion velocity law (including or not turbulence), the position/size of the aperture. The results is a huge set of profiles and PV-diagrams that can be compared to observations as a help to derive morpho-kinematical properties of real objects.

We are performing a uniform and unbiased imaging survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer). Meixner et al. (2006) provides an overview of the project and initial results and their Table 1 (repeated here) outlines the survey's salient characteristics. In this project, we are surveying the agents of a galaxys evolution (SAGE), i.e. the interstellar medium (ISM) and stars, and their interaction on the galaxy wide scale of the LMC. Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images provide key insights into the life cycle of matter in a galaxy because the infrared emission from dust grains is an effective tracer of the ISM, star formation, and stellar mass-loss. Three key science goals determined the coverage and depth of the survey. The detection of diffuse ISM with column densities > 1.2×1021 H cm−2 permits detailed studies of dust processes in the ISM. SAGE's point source sensitivity enables a complete census of newly formed stars with masses >3 M⊙ that will determine the current star formation rate in the LMC. SAGE's detection of evolved stars with mass loss rates > 10−8 M⊙ yr−1 will quantify the rate at which evolved stars inject mass into the ISM of the LMC (Blum et al. 2006). The SAGE data are nonproprietary. The preliminary SAGE catalog of epoch 1 photometry, prepared by the SAGE Team and released to the public on January 3, 2006, contains over 4 million IRAC sources, band merged with 2MASS photometry and over 60,000 MIPS 24 micron sources. Preliminary estimates indicate that foreground Milky Way stars and background galaxies may comprise as much as 18% and 12%, respectively, of these catalogs. The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES, Auld et al. 2006) will map ~200 square degrees over the next years using the ALFA feed array at the 305-m Arecibo Telescope. AGES is specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments from local voids to interacting groups and cluster of galaxies. AGES will map 20 square degrees in the Coma-Abell1367 supercluster including the Abell cluster 1367 and its outskirts (up to ~2 virial radii). In Spring 2006 we nearly completed the observations of 5 square degrees in the range 11:34< RA< 11:54, 19:20<Dec<20:20 covering all the cluster core and part of its infalling region reaching a 5 sigma detection limit of M(HI)~4×108M⊙ (assuming a velocity width ~200 km~s−1) at the distance of Abell1367 (~92 Mpc). An HI selected sample has been extracted from the datacube obtaining a catalogue of fluxes, recessional velocities, positions and velocity widths. We present a preliminary analysis of the properties of the HI sources and report the discovery of HI diffuse features within interacting groups at the periphery of Abell1367.

Results of the Mars Express mission to Mars are summarized.

The study of the differential rotation law is an important issue in solar physics. Earlier studies of filaments found formulae for their differential rotation at stable existence stage. This paper relies on Big Bear Solar Observatory H-alpha filtergrams to estimate angular velocities of quiescent filaments at different stages of existence. Angular velocities are shown to cover a wide range of values. Likely causes of this velocity scatter are discussed.

We present a multiwavelength analysis of a compact group infalling at high speed (~1700 km s−1) into the dynamically young cluster Abell 1367. Peculiar morphologies and unusually high Halpha emission are associated with two giant galaxies and at least ten dwarfs/extragalactic HII regions, making this group the region with the highest density of star formation activity ever observed in the local clusters. Moreover Halpha imaging observations reveal extraordinary complex trails of ionized gas behind the galaxies, with projected lengths exceeding 100 kpc. These unique cometary trails mark the gaseous trajectory of galaxies, witnessing their dive into the hot cluster intergalactic medium. Under the combined action of tidal forces among group members and the ram-pressure by the cluster ambient medium, the group galaxies were fragmented and the ionized gas was blown out. The properties of this group suggest that environmental effects within infalling groups may have represented a preprocessing step of the galaxy evolution during the high redshift cluster assembly phase.

Post-main-sequence (MS) mass loss causes orbital separation amplification in fragile (i.e. common proper motion) binary star systems. Components typically have separations around ∼1000 AU. Such wide pairs experience negligible tidal interactions and mass transfer between companions; thus they evolve as two separate but coeval stars. In this paper we compute the rate of mass loss during the components' lifetimes and attempt to model how it will statistically distort a frequency distribution of fragile binary separations. Understanding this process provides a robust test of current theories of stellar evolution and sets constraints on the dynamics of the Galactic disk.

We developed a new quick pseudo-3D photoionization code based on Cloudy (Ferland et al.) and IDL (RSI) tools. The code is running the 1D photoionization code Cloudy various times, changing at each run the input parameters (e.g. inner radius, density law) according to an angular law describing the morphology of the object. Then a cube is generated by interpolating the outputs of Cloudy. In each cell of the cube, the physical conditions (electron temperature and density, ionic fractions) and the emissivities of lines are determined. Associated tools (VISNEB and VELNEB_3D) are used to rotate the nebula and to compute surface brightness maps and emission line profiles, given a velocity law and taking into account the effect of the thermal broadening and eventually the turbulence. Integrated emission line profiles are computed, given aperture shapes and positions (seeing and instrumental width effects are included). The main advantage of this tool is the short time needed to compute a model (a few tens of minutes).

Results of the Mars Exploration Rover mission to Mars are summarized.

We present the result of a search for Cepheids in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy (DIG) Pegasus. We identified 20 Cepheid stars with periods 0d.6 < P < 15d.3. We have compared them with previously published Cepheids and we have carried out an accurate completeness analysis in order to obtain the fraction of them which are lost. Using their period-luminosity relation we obtain a distance for Pegasus of 950±30 Kpc.

We perform a 3D-MHD simulation of a self-gravitating isothermal gas layer that is initially penetrated by a uniform magnetic field. The strength of the initial magnetic field is such that the cloud is slightly subcritical. In this system, we input random supersonic turbulence initially. Ion-neutral friction is also introduced in the magnetized gas so that the magnetic diffusion allows gas to go across the magnetic field and form self-gravitating cores. We found that self-gravitating cores are formed in the dense region enhanced by the shock waves if ion-neutral friction is introduced. The time scale of core formation is on the order of the 106 years, which is faster than the usual magnetic diffusion time (107 years) estimated from the initial condition. Our result is consistent with the results of 2D-MHD simulations by Li & Nakamura (2004).
