We present deep B,V,I photometry of three wide fields within the core of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph). We provide accurate templates for some well identified sequences of the CMD of the galaxy (Blue HB, Red HB, etc.) as tools to recognize portion of the tidal Stream detected by various surveys, to compare the stellar populations in the main body of Sgr and in its Stream, and to derive accurate distances to Stream stars.

In this article I review our present knowledge of SN 1006 based on radio observations since the identification of the radio remnant four decades ago. I also report preliminary results of a new radio expansion study which combines VLA 1991/92 data with new VLA and ATCA observations performed in 2003.

We present preliminary results of the study of the photospheric physical conditions about 30 minutes before the 2N/M2 two-ribbon solar flare. The soft X-ray enhancement, $H_{\alpha}$ brightening and microwave bursts occured prior to the flare. We demonstrate the semiempirical models of the preflaring photosphere fot two kernels of the future flare. These models derived from the inversion reproduce the spectral observations in seven Fraunhofer lines. The models consist of two atmospheres: the magnetic flux tube and its nonmagnetic surroundings. The inferred models show strong changes of the photospheric physical conditions in the preflare phase. The preheating was found in the flux tube. Upward motions of the surrounding photospheric material were revealed. Significant discrepancies of the flux-tube temperature and density are found for two sites of the future flare. The inner kernel located near the filament was cooler in the photosphere than the outer kernel.

Full-vector magnetograms and Dopplergrams of selected areas of the solar photosphere are used to compute the vertical component of the right-hand side of the vector induction equation. We attempt to find a criterion for the action of the convective mechanism of amplification and structuring of magnetic fields using the distributions of this quantity and of the vertical magnetic-field component.

We study the possibility of pure general relativistic models without exotic matter to describe the observed flattening of the rotation curves for stars moving in circular orbits in a galaxy disk. In particular we consider the dragging of inertial frames (rotation of the source) and the presence of a Taub–NUT (Newman–Unti–Tamburino) “charge”, the gravitational equivalent to a magnetic monopole in electrodynamics.

We have observed SBS 1150+599A spectroscopically in the UV using HST to derive C/H $\sim$ 7.6 and N/H $\sim$ 7.0 for the first time. The central star temperature is now better constrained to $\sim$130,000K, but still is not well determined. This uncertainty dominates the error in O/H, which has been the subject of debate, yet with these data, SBS 1150+599A has the lowest O/H of any PN. Furthermore, the physics of this object are so extreme that minor differences in atomic modeling impact the composition analysis strongly. We also find that the binary central star, based on photometric and kinematic variations, exhibits CV-like properties with an amplitude of 13% and an orbital period of 3.924 hours.

Using HST emission line images of the Orion Nebula, separated by 7 years in epoch, we have obtained evidence of localized temporal variability of both density and temperature during this period. Applying a digital filter to reduce high frequency noise, we used images in Hα and [OIII] to quantify separately the variability in these two parameters. We detected fractional temperature variations of order 0.4% on scales of 2′10−2 pc. The same images yielded proper motion information; using cross-correlation to optimize the accuracy of the differential measurements we produced velocity field maps across the nebula, with vectors ranging up to ~130kms−1 across the line of sight. It is notable that in zones of rapid proper motion we find by far the largest density variations, as would be expected. It is much easier to quantify the temperature variations, on the other hand, in zones with low or zero detectable proper motion (see the other figure here), though these temperature variations appear across the whole face of the nebula.

The V and R light curves for 30 RR Lyrae stars in M15 were used to calculate their physical parameters. The Blazhko effect, previously reported in V12, was not detected. The determined values of the iron content and distance of the cluster are: [Fe/H] = −1.98 ± 0.24 and d = 8.67 ± 0.41 kpc, respectively. The mean values of the physical parameters determined for the RR Lyrae stars place the cluster precisely into the sequences Oosterhoff type – metallicity and metallicity – effective temperature, valid for globular clusters.

We present a short review on poor groups of galaxies focusing on the evolution of compact groups and formation of fossil groups. Fossil groups are systems with one dominant luminous elliptical galaxy surrounded by faint companions, in an extended X-ray halo. We will briefly discuss the possibility of fossil groups being the end-products of the merging of compact groups.

We are preparing a catalog of extragalactic planetary nebulae. The current number of entries is $\sim$8,000 objects, with the largest samples coming from the Local Group (SMC, LMC, M33, and M31), but with representation from over 55 galaxies. The catalog is expected to be complete in late 2007.

Since the mass-radius relation is quite different for a main sequence (MS) star and a giant (G) star, we find that the radiation efficiencies in the star capture processes by a black hole (BH) are also very different. This may provide a useful way to distinguish the capture of MS and G stars. Comparing with observations of the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emissions, we argue the event that triggers the gamma-ray emission in the energy range 4–40 TeV should be a G star capture. On the other hand, the capture of MS stars by the massive BH is required when the measured spectrum of VHE gamma-rays extends from 109 to 1015 eV.

The relative positions of Hipparcos visual double star components are currently known with a precision around fifty mas. Modern CCD astrometric observations of these objects achieve an accuracy of their angular separation between ten and twenty mas per observation. New CCD measurements have been obtained at Kryonerion Observatory in the north hemisphere. They provide current relative positions of visual double stars which are at least twice as accurate as the ones provided by Hipparcos. The new measurements will permit us to extract the physical pairs from the sample, and the double stars, which have components of common origin. Final statistics of these systems will improve our understanding of stellar formation and evolution rates of wide binaries in the solar neighborhood.

The ORELSE Survey (Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments) is a multi-wavelength program to study the large-scale structure around a sample of 20 z>0.6 clusters, with the goal of understanding transformative processes affecting galaxies in a broad range of environments. The survey includes (1) deep optical imaging to map structure around the clusters; (2) optical spectroscopy to confirm redshifts, map the galaxy distribution, obtain cluster masses via dynamical estimates, and measure spectral properties; (3) ground-based K-band imaging, to better constrain galaxy stellar masses and improve photometric redshift estimates; (4) near-IR spectroscopy to study post-starburst galaxies and AGN; (5) HST imaging to obtain galaxy morphologies; (6) Spitzer IRAC and MIPS imaging to separate starburst and AGN populations, and examine dusty galaxies; and (7) Chandra and VLA mapping to find X-ray and radio-loud AGN that are not evident from optical data. We discuss here the motivation and some early results.

The results of applying two algorithmic techniques to time-averaged images of the solar granulation are presented. Some quasi-regular structures, which are hidden in the intense noise due to the presence of light blotches in the images, can be detected in this way.

Optical and UV emission from SN 1006 is observed on the periphery of the SNR, particularly in the NW, and arises as material from interstellar gas is ionized behind the shock front. The shapes of the emission lines have been used to infer a shock velocity of about 2900 km s−1 and to show that the electron and ion temperatures are close to that expected from standard shock theory. The combination of the shock velocity and the proper motion of the filaments in the NE accurately locates SN1006 at a distance of 2.2 kpc, some 550 pc above the Galactic plane. At UV wavelengths, ejecta from SN 1006 have also been observed as broad absorption lines from Si, Ca and Fe in spectra of the Schweitzer-Middleditch star and two quasars. The observations appear to limit the mass of Fe in SN 1006 to less than 0.16 M⊙, much less than expected from models of Type Ia supernovae. In this brief review of the UV and optical properties of SN 1006, I will summarize how these observations yield a fairly consistent description of SN 1006, and suggest what further observations might be undertaken to extend our understanding of SN 1006 in its second millennium.

Cometary globule CG 12 lies at the distance of 630 pc more than 200 pc above the Galactic plane. The cloud's structure could be due to the passage of a supernova blast wave. Curiously, the cometary tail points at the galactic plane which would put the putative supernova even farther above the Galactic plane than the globule. The globule contains a low/intermediate mass stellar cluster with at least 9 members (Williams et al. 1977). The head of CG 12 has been observed using NIR imaging (NTT SOFI), mm continuum (SEST SIMBA) and sub mm (APEX) and mm (SEST) spectroscopy (Haikala & Olberg 2006, Haikala et al.). The molecular material is distributed in a North-South 10' long elongated lane with two compact maxima separated by 3'. Strong C18O (3-2), (2-1) and (1-0) emission is detected in both maxima and both have an associated compact 1.2 mm continuum source. The Northern core, CG 12 N, is cold and is possibly still pre-stellar. A dense and compact core is observed in DCO+ and CS emission in the direction of the Southern core, CG 12 S. A remarkable C18O hot spot was detected in CG 12 S. This is the first detection of such a compact, warm object in a low mass star forming region. The hot spot can be modelled with a 60″ to 80″ diameter (~0.2 pc) hot (80 K ≲ Tex≲ 100 K) 1.6 solar mass clump (Haikala et al. 2006). The hot spot lies at the edge of a dense cloud core and on the axis of a highly collimated bipolar molecular outflow (White 1993). The driving source of the outflow is most probably embedded in the dense core. NIR imaging reveals a bright cone like feature with a faint counter cone in the centre of CG 12 S. The size of the CG 12 compact head, 1.1 pc by 1.8 pc, and the C18O mass larger than 100 solar masses are comparable to those of other nearby low/intermediate mass star formation regions.

V, I time-series photometry of the new Milky Way satellite recently discovered in the Bootes constellation (Belokurov et al. 2006) was collected at the TNG, WIRO and Loiano telescopes and used to search for variable stars. We have identified a non-negligible population of RR Lyrae variables, which confirms the presence of an old population in this newly discovered structure. The distribution of periods coupled with information on the evolutionary status of the system derived fromthe color-magnitude diagram provide important hints on the nature and history of this intriguing new companion of the Milky Way.

A series of drifting microwave bursts during the 30 March 2001 flare are analyzed using the Siberian Solar radiotelescope (SSRT) images at 5.7 GHz and dynamic spectra obtained simultaneously by the spectropolarimeters of National Astronomic Observatories in China (NAOC) in the range 5.2–7.6 GHz. While observing the event with the SSRT, the burst sources were simultaneously recorded at two frequencies, which allowed their relative spatial shifts to be measured and source velocity along the flare loop (observed in soft X-ray and ultraviolet emission) to be evaluated. Estimates were made of the plasma density gradient along the source movement direction, the plasma emission being assumed to be generated at the second harmonic. Drifting burst series occur during transient hard X-ray brightenings. Burst drift rates ranged from $-$10 to 20 GHz/s, with a mean value of about 6 GHz/s. The shape of the drift rate distribution around the mean value is nearly symmetric. It is suggested that the mean value distribution may be related to increased plasma density in the source of subsecond pulses. In particular, the corresponding density variations may be associated with magnetic reconnection processes.

Helioseismic holography is a technique used to image the sources of seismic disturbances observed at the solar surface. It has been used to detect acoustic emission, known as sun quakes, radiated from X-class solar flares. Since the seismic power emitted by the X-class flares has proved to be independent of the strength of the flare, we have undertaking a systematic search for seismic signatures from M-class solar flares, observed by SOHO-MDI.

We have detected significant acoustic emission from a few M-class solar flares. Preliminary results of the survey of M-type solar flares studied so far is available at: aira.astro.ro/~deanna/M.html.

The galaxy population at z ≲ 1 is effectively described as a combination of two distinct types: red, early-type galaxies lacking much star formation and blue, late-type galaxies with active star formation. For the red galaxy population, recent work by Bell et al. (2004) has shown that the number density of ~L* galaxies on the red sequence has risen by a factor of ~2 from z ~ 1 to z ~ 0. A variety of complementary observations suggests that the build-up of galaxies on the red sequence results from 2 distinct evolutionary trends: (1) the quenching of star formation in blue galaxies and their subsequent migration onto the red sequence and (2) the dissipationless or (“dry”) merging of red-sequence galaxies.
