In order to investigate the distinguishability about the progenitors of FeCCSNe and ECSNe, we calculate the luminosities and spectra of their pre-SN neutrinos and estimate the number of events at neutrino detectors.

The mass of a Cepheid is a fundamental parameter for studying the pulsation and evolution of intermediate-mass stars. But determining this variable has been a long-standing problem for decades. Detecting the companions (by spectroscopy or imaging) is a difficult task because of the brightness of the Cepheids and the close orbit of the components. So most of the Cepheid masses are derived using stellar evolution or pulsation modeling, but they differ by 10-20 %. Measurements of dynamical masses offer the unique opportunity to make progress in resolving this mass discrepancy.

The first problem in studying binary Cepheids is the high contrast between the components for wavelengths longer than 0.5 μm, which make them single-line spectroscopic binaries. In addition, the close orbit of the companions (<40 mas) prevents us from spatially resolving the systems with a single-dish 8m-class telescope. A technique able to reach high spatial resolution and high-dynamic range is long-baseline interferometry. We have started a long-term program that aims at detecting, monitoring and characterizing physical parameters of the Cepheid companions. The GAIA parallaxes will enable us to combine interferometry with single-line velocities to provide unique dynamical mass measurements of Cepheids.

Mass is a key parameter in understanding the evolution and eventual fate of hot, luminous stars. Mass loss through a wind driven by UV-scattering forces is already known to reduce the mass of such stars by 10−10 − 10−4 M⊙/yr over the course of their lifetimes. However, high-mass stars already drive such strong winds while they are still in their accretion epoch. Therefore, stellar UV-scattering forces will efficiently ablate material off the surface of their circumstellar disks, perhaps even shutting off the final accretion through the last several stellar radii and onto a massive protostar. By using a three-dimensional UV-scattering prescription, we here quantify the role of radiative ablation in controlling the disk’s accretion rate onto forming high-mass stars. Particular emphasis is given to the potential impact of this process on the stellar upper mass limit.

The understanding of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy relies on the stellar chemical composition. Accurate atmospheric parameters is a prerequisite of determination of accurate chemical abundances. For late type stars with known distance, surface gravity (log g) can be calculated from well-known relation between stellar mass, Teff, and absolute bolometric magnitude. This method weakly depends on model atmospheres, and provides reliable log g. However, accurate distances are available for limited number of stars. Another way to determine log g for cool stars is based on ionisation equilibrium, i.e. consistent abundances from lines of neutral and ionised species. In this study we determine atmospheric parameters moving step-by-step from well-studied nearby dwarfs to ultra-metal poor (UMP) giants. In each sample, we select stars with the most reliable Teff based on photometry and the distance-based log g, and compare with spectroscopic gravity calculated taking into account deviations from local thermodinamic equilibrium (LTE). After that, we apply spectroscopic method of log g determination to other stars of the sample with unknown distances.

η Carinae, the most extreme luminous blue variable in our Galaxy, underwent a Great Eruption in the 1800s and ejected significant mass into the well-known bipolar Homunculus. But η Car's outer ejecta, a spread of dense, nitrogen-rich knots outside the Homunculus, have led to suspicion that the Great Eruption was not this star's first major mass-loss event. We have measured proper motions for nearly 800 distinct features in the outer ejecta using 21 years of HST WFPC2 and ACS imaging. With motions measured across sixteen baselines, we find that the outer ejecta are expanding ballistically and belong to three age groups: one dating to the mid-1200s, another to the mid-1500s, and a third to the early 1800s, associated with but perhaps predating the peak of the Great Eruption. These three age groups are separated in space and radial velocity. There is no evidence for interaction between the dense ejecta that could be powering η Car's soft X-ray shell, which is instead likely driven by fast, rarefied ejecta from the Great Eruption striking the older dense ejecta. The thirteenth-century event was strikingly asymmetric, ejecting mass almost entirely to one side of the star. The sixteenth-century event displays bipolar symmetry, but along a different axis than the current Homunculus. These observations provide constraints on theoretical models of η Car's behavior, as viable models must explain the repetition, timescale, and asymmetry of these major mass-loss events. The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES, Gilmore et al. 2012) provides a unique opportunity to detect spectroscopically multiplicity among different populations of the Galaxy using the cross-correlation functions (CCFs). We present here the GES internal Data Release 4 (iDR4) results of the detection of double, triple and quadruple-line spectroscopic binary candidates (SBs) and discuss some peculiar systems.

We present an in-depth study of metal-poor stars, based high resolution spectra combined with newly released astrometric data from Gaia, with special attention to observational uncertainties. The results are compared to those of other studies, including Gaia benchmark stars. Chemical evolution models are discussed, highlighting few puzzles that are still affecting our understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis and of the evolution of our Galaxy.

To this date ψ Per is the only classical Be star that was angularly resolved in radio (by the VLA at λ = 2 cm). Gaussian fit to the azimuthally averaged visibility data indicates a disk size (FWHM) of ~500 stellar radii (Dougherty & Taylor 1992). Recently, we obtained new multi-band cm flux density measurements of ψ Per from the enhanced VLA. We modeled the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) covering the interval from ultraviolet to radio using the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code HDUST (Carciofi & Bjorkman 2006). An SED turndown, that occurs between far-IR and radio wavelengths, is explained by a truncated viscous decretion disk (VDD), although the shallow slope of the radio SED suggests that the disk is not simply cut off, as is assumed in our model. The best-fit size of a truncated disk derived from the modeling of the radio SED is 100+5−15 stellar radii, which is in striking contrast with the result of Dougherty & Taylor (1992). The reasons for this discrepancy are under investigation.

On the basis of long-term UBV observations of P Cygni, which were made by Eugene Kharadze and Nino Magalashvili between 1951-1983, is evident that P Cygni undergone reddening during those observations. P cygni is a LBV and a supernova impostor. Corrected on the reddening B-V color has values between about -0.4 (at the beginning of 1950-ies) and -0.1 (for the 1980-ies). It means that the star probably had earlier spectral type at the beginning of 20-th century and accordingly, we are witnesses of its evolutionary changes. It means also that on the HR diagram the star moves gradually to the instability strip of LBVs in Outburst. So, if the rate of the reddening of the P Cygni will the same in near future then the star will have the next eruption (or even supernova explosion) after approximately 80-120 years.

The long (approximately 1500 d, 1160 d, 760 d, 580 d) quasi-periods and the shorter ones (approximatelly 130 d, 68 d and 15-18 days) were revealed using the above observations.

We observed P Cygni on July 23 - October 20, 2014 with the 48 cm Cassegrain telescope and standard B,V,R,I filters. HD 228793 has been used as a comparison star. We revealed that during our observations the star underwent light variations with the mean amplitude of approximately 0.1 magnitudes in all pass-bands and the period of this change was approximately 68 days. There is also a relation between brightness and the Hα EW variability. Therefore, we think that the cause of this behavior may be a variability of rate of the stellar wind that is very strong in this star. Changes in the rate of the stellar wind, on the other hand, maybe due to the pulsation of the star. It seems that quasi-periods of the brightness variability are almost the exact multiples of each other which probably also indicates on pulsation of the star. According to the new photometric observations of 2014 the star continues reddening.

We are monitoring nearby long period variable stars (LPVs) in the near infrared K band to establish their precise Period-Luminosity relation. However, they are very bright in the near-infrared and it is difficult to observe them because they are easily saturated on the modern near-infrared camera. We developed a special ND filter, named Local Attenuation Filter (LAF), to observe very bright stars. Using LAF, we can observe not only the very bright targets without saturation but also reference stars in the same image. We can perform the accurate relative photometry for the bright stars. We present this new method to observe bright stars as well as the status of our monitoring of nearby LPVs.

A substantial number of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are expected to be hosted by starbursting luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). However, so far very few CCSNe have been discovered in LIRGs, most likely as a result of dust extinction and lack of contrast in their typically luminous and complex nuclear regions. We present the first results of Project SUNBIRD (Supernovae UNmasked By InfraRed Detection), where we aim to uncover dust-obscured nuclear supernovae by monitoring over 30 LIRGs, using near-infrared state-of-the-art Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGSAO) imaging on the Gemini South and Keck telescopes. Such discoveries are vital for determining the fraction of supernovae which will be missed as a result of dust obscuration by current and future optical surveys.

With the next Gaia release (expected in April 2018), the distance of about 300 Galactic Cepheids will be derived with a precision of better than 3%. These distances will be used first to constrain the Cepheid period-luminosity relation, but they will also bring strong constrains on the physics of Cepheids, through the projection factor, a physical quantity used in the inverse Baade-Wesselink (BW) method.

Winds of hot massive stars are driven radiatively by light absorption in the lines of heavier elements. Therefore, the radiative force depends on the wind ionization. That is the reason why the accretion powered X-ray emission of high-mass X-ray binaries influences the radiative force and may even lead to wind inhibition. We model the effect of X-ray irradiation on the stellar wind in high-mass X-ray binaries. The influence of X-rays is given by the X-ray luminosity, by the optical depth between a given point and the X-ray source, and by the distance to the X-ray source. The influence of X-rays is stronger for higher X-ray luminosities and in closer proximity of the X-ray source. There is a forbidden area in the diagrams of X-ray luminosity vs. the optical depth parameter. The observations agree with theoretical predictions, because all wind-powered high-mass X-ray binary primaries lie outside the forbidden area. The positions of real binaries in the diagram indicate that their X-ray luminosities are self-regulated.

Classical Cepheids (hereafter Cepheids) are important standard candle as they obey the famous period-luminosity (PL) relation. Parallax measurements from Gaia offer a unique opportunity to derive or calibrate the PL relations for Galactic Cepheids, as traditionally their distances were measured via different methods. In this work, we attempted to derive the Gaia G-band PL relation based on the Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) measurements. We adopted the inferred distances provided by Astraatmadja & Bailer-Jones (2016), calculated using two priors in a Bayesian analysis, and cross-matched to known Galactic Cepheids. The resulting G-band PL relation, however, exhibits a much larger scatter than expected. Hence the inferred distances based on the Gaia DR1 parallaxes are not suitable for calibrating the Galactic PL relation, and future Data Releases with improved parallax measurements are desirable.

We are using light curves from the KELT exoplanet transit survey (Pepper et al. 2007) to study the variability of hundreds of Be stars. Combining these light curves with simultaneous time-series spectra from the APOGEE survey (Majewski et al. 2015) provides a glimpse into how changes in the circumstellar environment are correlated to brightness variations.

Binarity is now a well-established quality affecting a large fraction of stars, and recent studies have shown that the fraction of binaries is a function of the spectral type of the primary star, with most massive stars being member of a close binary system. By cross-matching TGAS with SB9, we went one step further and derived the mass ratio distribution of binary systems as a function of the spectral type of the primary star. This, combined with the binary fraction, provides very strong constraints on star formation and critical input for stellar population models.

The star forming regions NGC6334 and NGC6357 are amid the most active star-forming complexes of our Galaxy where massive star formation is occuring. Both complexes gather several HII regions but they exhibit different aspects: NGC6334 is characterised by a dense molecular ridge where recent massive star formation is obvious while NGC6357 is dominated by the action of the stellar cluster Pismis 24 which have shaped a large cavity. To understand and compare the formation of massive stars in these two regions requires to precise the distance and characterise the proper motions of the O to B3 stellar population in these regions.

Massive stars are intrinsically rare and therefore present a challenge to understand from a statistical perspective, especially within the Milky Way. We recently conducted follow-up observations to the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey that were designed to detect more than 10,000 emission line stars, including WRs, by targeting regions in M31 previously known to host large numbers of young, massive clusters and very young stellar populations. Because of the existing PHAT data, we are able to derive an effective temperature, bolarimetric luminosity, and extinction for each of our detected stars. We report on preliminary results of the massive star population of our dataset and discuss how our results compare to previous studies of massive stars in M31.

ESA's Gaia space astrometry mission is performing an all-sky survey of stellar objects. At the beginning of the nominal mission in July 2014, an operation scheme was adopted that enabled Gaia to routinely acquire observations of all stars brighter than the original limit of G~6, i.e. the naked-eye stars. We present the current status and extent of those observations.

Eta Carinae is the most massive active binary within 10,000 light-years and is famous for the largest non-terminal stellar explosion ever recorded. Observations reveal that the supermassive (~120 M⊙) binary, consisting of an LBV and either a WR or extreme O star, undergoes dramatic changes every 5.54 years due to the stars’ very eccentric orbits (e ≈ 0.9). Many of these changes are caused by a dynamic wind-wind collision region (WWCR) between the stars, plus expanding fossil WWCRs formed one, two, and three 5.54-year cycles ago. The fossil WWCRs can be spatially and spectrally resolved by the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS). Starting in June 2009, we used the HST/STIS to spatially map Eta Carinae’s fossil WWCRs across one full orbit, following temporal changes in several forbidden emission lines (e.g. [Feiii] 4659 Å, [Feii] 4815 Å), creating detailed data cubes at multiple epochs. Multiple wind structures were imaged, revealing details about the binary’s orbital motion, photoionization properties, and recent (~5 − 15 year) mass-loss history. These observations allow us to test 3-D hydrodynamical and radiative-transfer models of the interacting winds. Our observations and models strongly suggest that the wind and photoionization properties of Eta Carinae’s binary have not changed substantially over the past several orbital cycles. They also provide a baseline for following future changes in Eta Carinae, essential for understanding the late-stage evolution of this nearby supernova progenitor. For more details, see Gull et al.
