Astronomy education and public outreach (EPO) is one of the important part of the future development of astronomy. During the past few years, as the rapid evolution of Internet and the continuous change of policy, the breeding environment of science EPO keep improving and the number of related projects show a booming trend. EPO is no longer just a matter of to teachers and science educators but also attracted the attention of professional astronomers. Among all activates of astronomy EPO, the data driven astronomy education and public outreach (abbreviated as DAEPO) is special and important. It benefits from the development of Big Data and Internet technology and is full of flexibility and diversity. We will present the history, definition, best practices and prospective development of DAEPO for better understanding this active field.

Coronal holes can be identified as the darkest regions in EUV or soft X-ray images with predominantly unipolar magnetic fields (LIRs) or as the regions with open magnetic fields (OMF). Our study reveals that only 12% of OMF regions are coincident with LIRs. The aim of this study is to investigate the conditions that affect the EUV intensity of OMF regions. Our results indicate that the EUV intensity and the magnetic field expansion factor of the OMF regions are weakly positively correlated when plotted in logarithmic scale, and that the bright OMF regions are likely to locate inside or next to the regions with closed field lines. We empirically determined a linear relationship between the expansion factor and the EUV intensity. The relationship is demonstrated to improve the consistency from 12% to 23%. The results have been published in Astrophysical Journal (Huang et al. 2019).

The cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency, Gaia, has revealed properties of 260 000 white dwarfs in the Galaxy, allowing us for the first time to constrain the evolution of white dwarfs with a large sample. Complementary surveys (CoRoT, Kepler, K2, APOGEE and Gaia-ESO), will revolutionize our understanding of the formation and history of our Galaxy, providing accurate stellar masses, radii, ages, distances, and chemical properties for very large samples of stars across different Galactic stellar populations. To exploit the potential of the combination of spectroscopic, seismic and astrometric observations, the population synthesis approach is a very crucial and efficient tool. We develop the Besançon Galaxy model (BGM, Lagarde et al.2017) for which stellar evolution predictions are included, providing the global asteroseismic properties and the surface chemical abundances along the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars. For the first time, the BGM can explore the effects of an extra-mixing occurring in red-giant stars Lagarde et al.2019, changing their stellar properties. The next step is to model a consistent treatment of giant stars and their remnants (e.g., white dwarfs). This kind of improvement would help us to constrain stellar and Galactic evolutions.

In this study, we analysed active galactic nuclei in the “green valley” by comparing active and non-active galaxies using data from the COSMOS field. We found that most of our X-ray detected active galactic nuclei with far-infrared emission have star formation rates higher than the ones of normal galaxies of the same stellar mass range.

To understand how the nature of the ionizing sources and the leakage of ionizing photons in high-redshift galaxies can be constrained from their emission-line spectra, we compare emission-line models of star-forming galaxies including leakage of ionizing radiation, active galactic nuclei (AGN) and radiative shocks, with observations of galaxies at various redshifts with properties expected to approach those of primeval galaxies.

A proto-cluster core is the most massive dark matter halo (DMH) in a given proto-cluster. To reveal the galaxy formation in core regions, we search for proto-cluster cores at z ˜ 2 in ˜1.5deg2 of the COSMOS field. Using pairs of massive galaxies (log (M*/Mʘ) ≥ 11) as tracers of cores, we find 75 candidate cores. A clustering analysis and the extended Press-Schechter model show that their descendant mass at z = 0 is consistent with Fornax-like or Virgo-like clusters. Moreover, using the IllustrisTNG simulation, we confirm that pairs of massive galaxies are good tracers of DMHs massive enough to be regarded as proto-cluster cores. We then derive the stellar mass function and the quiescent fraction for member galaxies of the 75 candidate cores. We find that stellar mass assembly and quenching are accelerated as early as z ˜ 2 in proto-cluster cores.

I will review the tips learned from panchromatic modeling of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), based on our recent work to study the relationship between AGN and star formation (SF). Several AGN SED models are compared, and a significant AGN contribution is found in the IR luminosities and corresponding star formation rates (SFRs). I will review the AGN-SF relation and how different parameters and sample selections affect the observed correlation. I will then report on the constant ratio discovered between the SFR and the black hole mass accretion rate (BHAR), and their implications on the gas supply and galaxy formation history of these systems. Caveats and important questions to answer are summarized at the end.

Circumstellar discs are known to exist in great variety, from gas-rich discs around the youngest stars to evolved debris discs such as the solar system’s zodiacal cloud. Through gravitational interaction, exoplanets embedded in these discs can generate density variations, imposing potentially observable structural features on the disc such as rings or gaps. Here we report on a mirrored double crescent pattern arising in simulations of discs harbouring a small, moderately eccentric planet - such as Mars. We show that the structure is a result of a directed apsidal precession occurring in particles that migrate the planet’s orbital region under Poynting-Robertson drag. We further analyze the strength of this effect with respect to planet and particle parameters.

Interactions and mergers between dwarf galaxies are mostly gas-rich and should be marked by an intense star formation activity. But these processes, which are expected to be common at earlier times, are very difficult to observe at low redshifts. To investigate that, we look in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for compact groups that contain one luminous compact galaxy (LCG) with very high specific star formation rate (sSFR) and at least two other blue galaxies. We found 24 groups that satisfy these criteria, among which 12 groups have SDSS spectroscopic data for at least 2 member galaxies. Here we want to investigate, using the tidal strength estimator Q, how interactions between neighbouring galaxies affect the sSFR and concentration of each LCG. Statistical tests reveal a correlation between Q and their sSFR, indicating that tidal forces between neighbouring galaxies might be inducing bursts of star formation in the LCGs.

Saturn’s moon Titan was explored by the Cassini mission for nearly 13 years. Important discoveries made during the Cassini mission include the observations of stratospheric clouds in Titan’s cold polar regions in which spectral features or organic molecules were detected in the infrared (<100 μm). In particular, benzene (C6H6) ice spectral signatures were recently detected at unexpectedly high altitudes over the South Pole. The combined experimental, modeling and observational effort presented here has been devised and executed in order to interpret these high altitude benzene observations. Our multi-disciplinary approach aims to understand and characterize the microphysics of benzene clouds in Titan’s South Pole.

We have found three new members of the Rampo asteroids family: 2009HD95, 2010VO19, 2013JF69. We estimated the Yarkovsky semimajor axis drift rate. Based on the simulation results, estimates of the asteroid pairs’ age included in the family are obtained. In the scenario of the cascade disruption of the parent body of the asteroid (10321) Rampo, one can note the concentration of estimates of the pairs’ age to values of 900, 750, 500, and 250 kyr.

We employ Pan-STARRS photometry, Gaia trigonometric parallaxes, modern stellar evolution and atmosphere models, and our Bayesian fitting approach to determine cooling and total ages for 159,238 white dwarfs. In many cases we are able to derive precise ages (better than 5%) for individual white dwarfs. These results are meant for broad use within the white dwarf and stellar astrophysics communities and we plan to make available on-line the posterior distributions for cooling age, total age, initial stellar mass, and other parameters.

The distribution of galaxies has been studied to show the difference between the blue cloud and red sequence and to define the green valley region. However, there are still many open questions regarding the importance of the green valley for understanding the morphological transformation and evolution of galaxies, how galaxies change from late-type to early-type and the role of AGN in galaxy formation and evolution scenario. The work focused on studying in more details the properties of green valley galaxies by testing the six most used selection criteria, differences between them, and how they may affect the main results and conclusions. The main findings are that, by selecting the green valley galaxies using different criteria, we are selecting different types of galaxies in terms of their stellar masses, sSFR, SFR, spectroscopic classification and morphological properties, where the difference was more significant for colour criteria than for sSFR and SFR vs. M* criteria.

The original design of the IAUS367 included the development of a Workshop, thought to be a face-to-face instance, in order to interact with teachers and researchers, and to discuss the design, the theoretical foundations and the use of some didactic devices to observe and record the state of illumination and shadows casting variations on different objects, natural or artificial, through time, and its interpretation from a local, topocentric perspective, together with a global, planetary perspective. The pandemic forced us to convert this activity in a virtual one, which was very interesting anyway, with the participation of colleagues from different countries and with great theoretical wealth in the discussions. The Workshop lasted 2 hours, in Spanish language. We present here the initial proposal and a summary of what was discussed. The infrared Astronomical Satellite AKARI conducted deep (∼0.4 deg2) and wide (∼ 5.4 deg2) surveys around the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) with its InfraRed Camera (IRC) with nine filters continuously covering the 2–25 μm range. These photometric bands include three filters that fill the “ Spitzer gap” between the wavelength coverages of IRAC and MIPS. This unique feature has enabled us to make sensitive mid-infrared detection of AGN candidates at z∼1-2, based on the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting including hot dust emission in the AGN torus. This enables us to compare X-rays and the AGN torus component of the infrared emission to help us identify highly absorbed AGNs, including Compton-thick ones. We report our results of the Chandra observation of the AKARI NEP Deep Field and discuss the prospects for upcoming Spectrum-RG (eROSITA+ART-XC) on the AKARI Wide field.

Solar oblateness has been the subject of several studies dating back to the nineteenth century. Despite difficulties, both theoretical and observational, tangible results have been achieved. However, variability of the solar oblateness with time is still poorly known. How the solar shape evolves with the solar cycle has been a challenging problem. Analysis of the helioseismic data, which are the most accurate measure of the solar structure up to now, leads to the determination of asphericity coefficients which have been found to change with time. We show here that by inverting even coefficients of f-mode oscillation frequency splitting to obtain the oblateness magnitude and its temporal dependence can be inferred. It is found that the oblateness variations lag the solar activity cycles by about 3 years. A major change occurred between solar cycles 23 and 24 is that the oblateness was greater in cycle 24 despite the lower solar activity level. Such results may help to better understand the near-subsurface layers as they strongly impacts the internal dynamics of the Sun and may induce instabilities driving the transport of angular momentum.

The number of quasars known within the first billion years of the universe (z > 6) has increased significantly over the last five years. Many of these recently discovered quasars are ideal targets for observatories in the southern hemisphere such as ALMA. I will review the current status of the highest-redshift quasars and their environments, highlighting main achievements and limitations. I will then discuss how synergistic JWST/ALMA observations will shed light onto the properties and formation of some of the most extreme environments in the early universe.

We analyze individual white dwarfs in open clusters observed by Gaia. In particular, we determine ages when different model ingredients are used. We also explore fundamental properties of the white dwarfs, including temperature and mass, when using different filter combinations. Such tests are important to understanding any systematic effects when applying similar techniques to field stars.

This work focuses on understanding the formation of the first massive, passive galaxies in clusters, as a first step to the development of environmental trends seen at low redshift. Cl J1449 + 0856 is an excellent case to study this - a galaxy cluster at redshift z = 1.99 that already shows evidence of a virialised atmosphere. Here we highlight two recent results: the discovery of merger-driven star formation and highly-excited molecular gas in galaxies at the core of Cl J1449, along with the lowest-mass Sunyaev-Zel’dovich detection to date.

Electrospray ionisation has revolutionised mass spectrometry. Coupled to high mass resolution, it provides the stoichiometric formula of a lot of molecules in a mixture. The link between the mass spectrometry data and the chemical description relies on an interpretation of the measured masses. We present here the tools and tricks developed to exploit Orbitrap mass spectra. This piece of work focuses on the numerical method to assign a molecular formula to a measured mass. The problem is restrained to the solving of the Diophantine equation where the constant coefficients are stoichiometric groups. Peculiar case of a set of convenient groups is given with the chemical constraints it brings to the problem.
