Recent stellar evolution computations indicate that massive stars in the range ~ 20-30 M⊙ are located in the blue supergiant (BSG) region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram at two different stages of their life: immediately after the main sequence (MS, group 1) and during a blueward evolution after the red supergiant phase (group 2). From the observation of the pulsationnal properties of a subgroup of variable BSGs (α Cyg variables), one can deduce that these stars belongs to group 2. It is however difficult to simultaneously fit the observed surface abundances and gravity for these stars, and this allows to constrain the physical processes of chemical species transport in massive stars. We will show here that the surface abundances are extremely sensitive to the physics of convection, particularly the location of the intermediate convective shell that appears at the ignition of the hydrogen shell burning after the MS. Our results show that the use of the Ledoux criterion to determine the convective regions in the stellar models leads to a better fit of the surface abundances for α Cyg variables than the Schwarzschild one.

Large photometric or spectroscopic surveys are used to sort stars into populations and define the main trends that characterise them, as diagnostics of their origin. Stars falling off the trends defined by the ‘normal’ stars are called ‘peculiar’ and typically eliminated in discussions of Galactic structure and evolution. In our programme on extremely metal-poor halo giants, we have recently focused on the small subgroup that is strongly enhanced in r-process elements, asking whether the chemical peculiarity is intrinsic to these stars or due to local surface pollution caused by mass transfer from a binary companion. Precise radial-velocity monitoring over several years turns out to disprove the binary hypothesis and has led to new insight in the processes of chemical enrichment in the early Galactic halo. An ongoing analogous programme on carbon-enhanced metal-poor giants is briefly described at the end.

The recently published ZORROASTER catalogue is being expanded into what will eventually be a complete list of known ‘nearby’ (z < 0.1) AGN, with optical spectral images, detailed spectral descriptors and waveband-specific flux ratios included where available. The first version of ZORROASTER contained 2843 entries characterised by confirmed or previously suspected broad H-beta emission, and 1000 spectral images. The 2nd version of ZORROASTER was released during the conference, and (in addition to serendipitous updates) includes all z < 0.1 objects from the list of Markarian. Activity classes and spectral descriptions of Markarian objects have been reviewed, and comparisons of flux ratios derived from the 100 ZORROASTER wavelength-specific pass bands are presented for those Markarian AGN for which Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra exist. The value of the improved parameterizations and classifications of the Markarian objects on AGN studies, and the implications on some past investigations based on the Markarian lists, are briefly discussed.

Carbon and oxygen abundances in F and G main-sequence stars ranging in metallicity from [Fe/H] = −1.6 to +0.5 are determined from a non-LTE analysis of C i and O i atomic lines in high-resolution spectra. Both C and O are good tracers of stellar populations; distinct trends of [C/Fe] and [O/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H] are found for high- and low-alpha halo stars and for thick- and thin-disk stars. These trends and that of [C/O] provide new information on the nucleosynthesis sites of carbon and the time-scale for the chemical enrichment of the various Galactic components.

This paper updates the recent discovery of over a dozen new diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), first in H-band spectra of stars in the Galactic center (GC) and toward stars in the Cygnus OB2 Association. The H-band DIBs, which currently number 15, are the longest wavelength DIBs reported to date and are the first found on sightlines toward the Galactic center. K-band (2.0-2.5 μm) spectra of the GC stars do not reveal additional DIBs. Comparison of the velocity profile of the strongest of the new DIBs in the sightline toward GCS3-2 (in the GC) with that toward Cygnus OB2 No. 9 and also with the broad velocity profiles of H3+ lines toward GCS3-2 confirm that a significant fraction of the diffuse material producing the DIB absorptions on sightlines to the GC is located within the central few hundred parsecs of the Galaxy.

Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations during the last 30 years have resolved many supernovae and provided detailed measurements of the expansion velocity and deceleration. Such measurements are useful for estimating the radial density profiles of both the ejecta and the circumstellar medium left over from the progenitor. VLBI measurements are also the most direct way of confirming the relativistic expansion velocities thought to occur in supernovae associated with gamma-ray bursts. Well-resolved images of a few supernovae have been obtained, and the interaction of the ejecta as it expands into the circumstellar medium could be monitored in detail. We discuss recent results, for SN 1979C, SN 1986J, and SN 1993J, and note that updated movies of the latter two of the supernovae from soon after the explosion to the present are available from the first author's personal website.

The Galactic center (GC), being the closest nucleus, holds a position of privilege in the study of galaxy centers, but because it is edge-on and hidden behind 30 magnitudes of visual extinction it is often difficult to understand the overall structure of the region. Nearby galactic nuclei potentially provide a guide to understanding the large-scale structure of the GC. High resolution maps of molecular line emission along with radio and optical continuum towards the nucleus of the nearby, face-on spiral IC 342 are discussed. Attention is focused on a comparison of the large-scale morphology, gas chemistry, and star formation between the two nuclei. The case is made that IC 342 is one of the best extragalactic templates for the GC. Both have a star formation rate within a factor of two of each other and an ISM morphology characterized by a R 300 pc central molecular zone formed from a pair of arms laced with a collection of dense star forming molecular clouds. IC 342 also exhibits a nuclear cluster and associated circumnuclear disk. Whether the nuclear morphology and chemistry in IC 342 is an extension of the disk bar, a separate nuclear bar, or results from radiative/mechanical feedback remains unsettled.

We simulate the despinning of Mercury, with or without a fluid core, and with a frequency-dependent tidal model employed. The tidal model incorporates the viscoelastic (Maxwell) rebound at low frequencies and a predominantly inelastic (Andrade) creep at higher frequencies. It is combined with a statistically relevant set of histories of Mercury's eccentricity. The tidal model has a dramatic influence on the behaviour of spin histories near spin-orbit resonances. The probabilities of capture into high-order resonances are greatly enhanced. Exploring several scenarios, we conclude that the present 3:2 spin state was achieved by entrapment of an initially prograde cold Mercury when its age was less than 20 Myr, i.e., well before differentiation.

Very massive stars (in excess of ~ 100 M⊙) and massive stars in pre-SN phases at the end of their evolution are continuously approaching the Eddington limit. According to our theoretical predictions their high Eddington factors lead to a peculiar sub-photospheric structure and enhanced mass-loss. Their proximity to the Eddington limit is thus likely the reason why these objects appear as LBVs and WR stars. Here we discuss how our predictions relate to the characteristics of strange-mode pulsations, and how rotating massive stars at low metallicities can produce spectroscopic signatures that have recently been observed in a sample of star-forming galaxies at redshifts z ≈ 2 – 4.

Since its launch in December 2006, the CoRoT satellite has provided photometric data precise down to the micro-magnitude level for about 150 bright stars and 150 000 fainter ones. These stars have been observed over runs covering up to 160 days with a 90% duty cycle. Seismic data of such precision had been longed for by the scientific community for decades, and expected as a way of making progress in our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. The analysis and interpretation of CoRoT seismic data have indeed made it possible to place observational constraints on several key aspects of stellar structure and evolution, such as the size of mixed convective cores, magnetic activity, mass loss. . . We here present some highlights of the CoRoT results and their implications in terms of internal stellar structure.

To study the nature of Lyα blobs (aka LABs), we conduct a deep C IV and He II narrowband imaging survey of 13 Lyα blobs located in SSA22 proto-cluster at z ~ 3.1. We reach the unprecedented sensitivity, 5σ surface brightness limit of 2.1 − 3.4 × 10−18 erg s−1 cm−2 arcsec−2 per 1 arcsec2 aperture for two emission lines. We do not detect any extended C IV and He II emission, placing strong upper limits on the He II/Lyα and C IV/Lyα line ratios. We compare our limits with data in the literature related to the nebulae associated with high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) and quasars, and we recover the data by modeling the LABs as nebulosities powered by a central QSO. We present results of the X-ray monitoring of V4046 Sgr, a close classical T Tauri star binary, with both components accreting material. The 360 ks long XMM observation allowed us to measure the plasma densities at different temperatures, and to check whether and how the density varies with time. We find that plasma at temperatures of 1–4 MK has high densities, and we observe correlated and simultaneous density variations of plasma, probed by O VII and Ne IX triplets. These results strongly indicate that all the inspected He-like triplets are produced by high-density plasma heated in accretion shocks, and located at the base of accretion flows.

We present a study of the early UV/Optical emission of the stripped-envelope supernovae based on a one-dimensional, Lagrangian model that solves the hydrodynamics and radiation transport in an expanding ejecta. The models are compared with observations to constrain the physical properties of the progenitor star, such as radius and mixing of radioactive nickel synthesized during the explosion. In particular, we present models for the early emission of the type IIb SN 2011dh and the Type Ib SN 2008D.

Chemical diversity among metal-poor stars in the old stellar components in the Milky Way (MW), namely the thick disk and stellar halo, provides clues to understanding the early chemodynamical evolution of our Galaxy. We present our results on a homogeneous chemical abundance analysis for nearby metal-poor stars likely belonging to the MW thick disk, inner and outer stellar halos. Abundances of alpha, sodium, iron-peak and neutron-capture elements in the sample stars have been estimated using high-resolution (R 50000) spectra obtained with the High Dispersion Spectrograph mounted on the Subaru Telescope. The derived abundances are used to examine differences and similarities in elemental abundance ratios among the kinematically defined thick disk, inner and outer halo subsamples in the metallicity range of −3.3 < [Fe/H] < −0.5. We show that, in the metallicity range of [Fe/H] < −2, the three subsamples are similar in most of the elemental abundances. On the other hand, in the higher metallicities, particularly in [Fe/H] > −1.5, the thick disk and the inner/outer halo subsamples show systematically different abundance ratios for some elements including alpha, sodium, zinc and europium. A modest difference in the sodium and zinc abundances between the inner- and outer halo subsamples is also identified. The observed distinct abundances of some elements among the three subsamples implies that their constituent stars originally formed in progenitor systems that have experienced different star formation and chemical enrichment histories.

Physical conditions and oxygen and nitrogen abundances in 36 SBS UV-excess and/or emission-line galaxies from the SDSS DR7 were determined. We have found that SBS 0808+578 is AGN. The others are HII galaxies or HII regions in galaxies. For all objects the oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) lies in the range of 7.85 ÷ 8.61 and log(N/O) ratio in the range of −1.45 ÷ −0.4. They occupy the same area in the diagram N/O O/H as the high-excitation HII regions. We found no extremely metal-deficient galaxy. Using H-alpha fluxes star formation rates (SFR) for our samples galaxies were determined. Determined SFRs, being in the range of 0.001 ÷ 6 o year−1, are similar of that observed in typical star forming regions in spiral and irregular galaxies.

We present a data cube of the [NeII] (12.8 μm) emission from the inner 2 pc of Sgr A West with 1″ and 4 km s−1 resolution, and with substantially better SNR and velocity resolution than previous observations of the ionized gas. We compare the observations to two proposed models of the gas motions and distribution: flows along tidally stretched streamers, and more nearly circular motions with density wave compression. The density wave model provides a considerably better fit to the kinematics of the northern arm and western arc. Neither model fits the eastern arm and bar kinematics well.

To help understand the origin of the spiral pattern we calculated orbits in the potential of a black hole in a star cluster and find that the orbits naturally evolve to set up a one-armed spiral wave very similar to that observed, both spatially and kinematically. Magnetic or other perturbing forces may influence the formation of the spiral wave, but self gravity is not required. Because a density wave evolves on the orbit precession timescale, rather than the orbital timescale, a wave pattern should persist for several 105 yr. No net inward motion of the gas is required by the model. If there is inflow, it is much smaller than is suggested by the infalling streamer model.

Using high resolution H-band spectra from first-year observations of the SDSS-III APOGEE survey, we have searched for the presence of Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) towards several thousand stars and obtained ~7 000 robust detections spanning a broad range of Galactic environments. This represents the largest homogeneous sample of DIB systems in terms of both size and sky coverage, which can be used for various statistical studies. For example, we find the strength of the most prominent near-IR DIB (at 1.5723 μm) to be strongly correlated with line-of-sight dust extinction, and its apparent velocity appears to trace that of the Galactic CO emission. The ability to work at near-IR wavelengths allows us to probe lines of sight penetrating through the dusty disk of the Galaxy, spanning a range of about 8 magnitudes of extinction. This preliminary investigation illustrates how a large sample of DIBs can serve as a useful tool to probe the structure of the Galaxy and the chemistry of the interstellar medium.

A comparison of several known dynamical indicators of chaos based on the numerical integration of differential variational equations is performed. The comparison is implemented on the examples of studying dynamics in the planar circular restricted three-body problem.

Fundamental mode classical Cepheids have light curves which repeat accurately enough that we can watch them evolve (change period). The new level of accuracy and quantity of data with the Kepler and MOST satellites probes this further. An intriguing result was found in the long time-series of Kepler data for V1154 Cyg the one classical Cepheid (fundamental mode, P = 4.9 d) in the field, which has short term changes in period (≃20 minutes), correlated for ≃10 cycles (period jitter). To follow this up, we obtained a month long series of observations of the fundamental mode Cepheid RT Aur and the first overtone pulsator SZ Tau. RT Aur shows the traditional strict repetition of the light curve, with the Fourier amplitude ratio R1/R2 remaining nearly constant. The light curve of SZ Tau, on the other hand, fluctuates in amplitude ratio at the level of approximately 50%. Furthermore prewhitening the RT Aur data with 10 frequencies reduces the Fourier spectrum to noise. For SZ Tau, considerable power is left after this prewhitening in a complicated variety of frequencies.

In classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) strong shocks are formed where the accretion funnel impacts with the denser stellar chromosphere. Although current models of accretion provide a plausible global picture of this process, some fundamental aspects are still unclear: the observed X-ray luminosity in accretion shocks is order of magnitudes lower than predicted; the observed density and temperature structures of the hot post-shock region are puzzling and still unexplained by models.

To address these issues we performed 2D MHD simulations describing an accretion stream impacting onto the chromosphere of a CTTS, exploring different configurations and strengths of the magnetic field. From the model results we then synthesized the X-ray emission emerging from the hot post-shock, taking into account the local absorption due to the pre-shock stream and surrounding atmosphere.

We find that the different configurations and strengths of the magnetic field profoundly affect the hot post-shock properties. Moreover the emerging X-ray emission strongly depends also on the viewing angle under which accretion is observed. Some of the explored configuration are able to reproduce the observed features of X-ray spectra of CTTS.
