When it comes to lithium in late-type stars, atomic diffusion (AD) refers to the slow gravitational settling below the convective zone. Richard, Michaud & Richter, J. (2005) computed the influence of diffusion on the lithium abundance with different additional mixing (AddMix) parameters, after 13.5 Gyr with an initial Li abundance compatible with BBN. Without AddMix the abundance of lithium would decrease when the temperature of the star increases. This is depicted by the dashed green line in the left panel of Fig. 1 and is in contradiction with the existence of a lithium plateau. But with a model including ad-hoc AddMix, where the AddMix diffusion coefficient is given by DT and is connected to DHe(AD) at a reference temperature of log T0=6.25, it is possible to reproduce the plateau as seen in the figure (solid green line). AD with AddMix has so far been shown to be at work in two globular clusters (GC) with different metallicities. Korn et al. (2007) showed the effects in NGC 6397 at [Fe/H] = −2.1. More recently Gruyters et al. (2013) have shown smaller effects, but similar in nature, in NGC 6752 at [Fe/H] = −1.6. The Li abundance for both clusters can be brought in to agreement with predictions from the cosmic microwave background radiation and Big Bang nucleosynthesis (CMB+BBN) by using stellar structure models including AD and AddMix, although with different efficiencies of AddMix. It seems there is an evolution of AddMix with metallicity which renders AD less efficient. As AddMix acts only in the outer regions, helium settling in the core is not affected, and so the overall evolution (e.g. Teff-age relation) will be similar regardless of this parameter.

We present preliminary results of seismic modeling of β Cephei-type stars in NGC 6910 based on simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations carried out in 2013 in Białków (photometry) and Apache Point (spectroscopy) observatories.

We present new results on the the MBH-M∗ relation of X-ray obscured, red QSOs at high redshift (1.2<z<2.6). The sample is made of 21 red QSOs, nine of them are new sources for which near-infrared spectra have been obtained with SINFONI and XShooter observations at ESO VLT, and show a broad Hα component. The rest of the sample (12 sources) is made of sources taken from the literature with similar properties. From the broad Hα line we have computed the BH masses through the virial formula while stellar masses have been obtained through multi-component SED fitting.

We find that red QSOs preferentially lie on the local relation up to z ~ 2.6 with the most massive objects mainly located above it. We also studied the evolution of these sources on the MBH-M∗ plane compared to a sample of optically blue type–1 QSOs and we find that obscured red QSOs show a constant MBH/M∗ ratio consistent/slightly higher than the local one but lower than what has been found for blue QSOs. These sources may represent the intermediate phase (blow-out phase) between the major-merger induced starbursts which appear as ULIRGs and SMGs and the optical type–1 blue QSOs which are revealed once the dust and nuclear gas is cleared up.

We investigate the nucleation of carbon and hydrogen atoms in the gas phase to form large carbon chains, clusters and cages by reactive molecular dynamics simulations. We study how temperature, particle density, presence of hydrogen, and carbon inflow affect the nucleation of molecular moieties with different characteristics.

Type I migration refers to the radial drift of a sub-Jupiter mass planet resulting from tidal interactions with a protoplanetary disk. It results in the rapid inward migration of small planets and planet cores through the disk. Type I migration is so rapid compared to disk dissipation time scales that explaining distant planets, such as the HR 8799 planets and Jupiter itself, is problematic because their growing cores should have been lost. Here, we present a scenario for solving the Type I migration problem. As a planet grows in mass, its Type I migration rate should increase, assuming that disk properties are not significantly altered by the forming planet. But a growing planet clears some, but not all, material from its orbital path, creating a partial gap in the disk. The trough of a partially cleared gap such as this is shadowed from stellar illumination while the far side of the gap is illuminated. Since stellar irradiation is the primary heat source of passively accreting protoplanetary disks, gap self-shadowing can significantly change the local temperature profile. This change to the local temperature gradient can significantly slow, or even reverse Type I migration.

I review our current knowledge of magnetic fields in stars more massive than around 1.5 M⊙, in particular their nature and origin. This includes the strong magnetic fields found in a subset of the population and the fossil field theory invoked to explain them; the subgauss fields detected in Vega and Sirius and their possible origin; and what we can infer about magnetic activity in massive stars and how it might be linked to subsurface convection.

The Galactic center (GC) region hosts three of the most massive resolved young clusters in the Local Group and constitutes a test bed for studying the star formation history of the region and inferring the possibility of a top-heavy scenario. Further, recent detection of a large number of apparently isolated massive stars within the inner 80 pc of the Galactic center has raised fundamental questions regarding massive star formation in a such a dense and harsh environment. Noting that most of the isolated massive stars have spectral analogs in the Quintuplet cluster, we have undertaken a combined analysis of the infrared spectra of both selected Quintuplet stars and the isolated objects using Gemini spectroscopy. We present preliminary results, aiming at α-elements versus iron abundances, stellar properties, ages and radial velocities which will differentiate the top-heavy and star-formation scenarios.

We present optical photometry and spectrosopy of the transient SN 2011A. Our data spans 140 days after discovery including BVRIu'g'r'i'z' photometry and a sequence of 11 spectra. First classified as a type IIn supernova due to the presence of narrow Hα emission, this object shows exceptional characteristics. Firstly, the light curve shows a double plateau; a property only before observed in the impostor object SN 1997bs. Secondly SN 2011A has a very low luminosity for a type IIn supernova placing it between the type IIn supernovae and impostor classes in terms of luminosity. Thirdly, SN 2011A shows low velocity and high equivalent width sodium doublet absorption which increases with time and is most likely of circumstellar origin. This evolution is also accompanied by a change of line profile. When the absorption becomes stronger, a P-Cygni profile appears.

We cannot presume to summarize all of the science we've discussed in the talks, posters, and informal discussions. Here, we discuss a few of the themes that emerged, concentrating on the theoretical basis that Wojtek Dziembowiski and his colleagues have developed and explored over the past 40+ years. We connect those with observational results – especially those from recent ground-based surveys and space-based missions that have revolutionized the study of stellar variability.

We perform numerical simulations of the whole Sun using the 3D anelastic spherical harmonic (ASH) code. In such models, the radiative and convective zones are non-linearly coupled and in the radiative interior a wave-like pattern is observed. For the first time, we are thus able to model in 3D the excitation and propagation of internal gravity waves (IGWs) in a solar-like star's radiative zone. We compare the properties of our waves to theoretical predictions and results of oscillation calculations. The obtained good agreement allows us to validate the consistency of our approach and to study the characteristics of IGWs. We find that a wave's spectrum is excited up to radial order n=58. This spectrum evolves with depth and time; we show that the lifetime of the highest-frequency modes must be greater than 550 days. We also test the sensitivity of waves to rotation and are able to retrieve the rotation rate to within 5% error by measuring the frequency splitting.

We present spectroscopic analysis of 63 type II supernovae. We present preliminary results on correlations between spectroscopic and photometric properties, focusing on light-curve decline rates, absolute magnitudes and Hα lines profiles. We found the ratio of absorption to emission of Hα P-Cygni profile as the dominant measured parameter as it has the highest median correlation with all other parameters.

We present a new method devoted to chemical tagging for Galactic Archeology. In the context of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) and the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC), we aim at preparing the Gaia-Radial Velocity Spectrograph analysis, which will provide ~ 2×106 spectra covering the IR CaII triplet domain (R ~ 11 500), with sufficient SNR to perform chemical tagging. Our method will be integrated in the Gaia DPAC Apsis pipeline (CU8, Astrophysical Parameters) and we test it with GES GIRAFFE spectra (MEDUSA mode, HR10 & HR21) deriving abundances of MgI in 168 stars.

In 2011, we discovered a compact gas cloud (“G2”) with roughly three Earth masses that is falling on a near-radial orbit toward the massive black hole in the Galactic center. The orbit is well constrained and pericenter passage is predicted for early 2014. Our data beautifully show that G2 gets tidally sheared apart due to the massive black hole's force. During the next months, we expect that in addition to the tidal effects, hydrodynamics get important, when G2 collides with the hot ambient gas around Sgr A*. Simulations show that ultimately, the cloud's material might fall into the massive black hole. Predictions for the accretion rate and luminosity evolution, however, are very difficult due to the many unknowns. Nevertheless, this might be a unique opportunity in the next years to observe how gas feeds a massive black hole in a galactic nucleus.

The diffuse interstellar bands are not due to solid state species. However, under the explicit assumption that DIB carriers survive the transfer from translucent to dark clouds, it is expected that for the low temperatures in the dense interstellar medium also DIB carriers accrete onto dust grains. Like all other molecules, apart from molecular hydrogen, they will get embedded in an ice matrix that largely consists of amorphous solid water. This offers - in principle - a tool to search for DIBs in complete different environments, both in space (i.e., towards embedded young stellar objects) and in the laboratory, namely in the solid state simulating interstellar ice analogues. Currently experiments are ongoing in the Sackler Laboratory for Astrophysics at Leiden Observatory to record optical ice spectra of potential DIB carriers. For this a new experimental approach has been developed. Its performance and potential are discussed.

The Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) project represents the largest systematic survey of stellar magnetism ever undertaken. Based on a sample of over 550 Galactic B and O-type stars, the MiMeS project has derived the basic characteristics of magnetism in hot, massive stars. Herein we report preliminary results.

Several exoplanets have been discovered in close binaries (a < 30 AU) to date.

The fact that planets can form in these dynamically challenging environments says that planet formation must be a robust process. Disks in these systems should be tidally truncated to within a few AU, so if they form in situ, the efficiency of planet formation must be high. While the dynamical capture of planets is also a possibility, the probability of these interactions is low, so in situ formation is the more plausible explanation. I examine the truncation of protoplanetary disks in close binary stars, studying how the disk mass is affected as it evolves from higher accretion rates to lower rates. In the gamma Cephei system, a protoplanetary disk around the primary star should be truncated to within a few AU, but enough mass still remains for planets to form. However, if the semimajor axis of the binary is too small or its eccentricity is too high, such as in HD 188753, the disk will have too little mass for planet formation to occur. I present a way to characterize the feasibility of planet formation based on binary orbital parameters such as stellar mass, companion mass, eccentricity and semi-major axis. Using this measure, we can quantify the robustness of planet formation in close binaries and better understand the overall efficiency of planet formation in general.

Completing the census of AGN in the Universe is the key to understanding the cosmic evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBH) and galaxies, and to resolving the spectrum of the X-ray background (XRB). However, a large population of AGN, especially the heavily obscured, Compton-thick AGN, are still missing from even the deepest X-ray surveys. The infrared spectra energy distribution (SED) of distant star-forming galaxies can reveal the presence of bright AGN activity. Using some of the deepest infrared, X-ray and radio data available in the GOODS fields, we identify a population of infrared bright quasars at redshift z ~ 2, which are often missed in the X-ray band. Amongst these sources the number of obscured and heavily-obscured quasars is much higher than those previously found in several X-ray and optical selected samples. A unique view on these heavily-obscured quasars is now given at high energies by NuSTAR. I will present the first NuSTAR detection of a heavily obscured quasar at z 2. This source is a potential archetype of the heavily-obscured high-z AGN in which most of the black hole growth is happening, that can explain the mysterious missing fraction of the XRB.

Measurements of secular period change probe real-time stellar evolution of classical Cepheids making these measurements powerful constraints for stellar evolution models, especially when coupled with interferometric measurements. In this work, we present stellar evolution models and measured rates of period change for two Galactic Cepheids: Polaris and l Carinae, both important Cepheids for anchoring the Cepheid Leavitt law (period-luminosity relation). The combination of previously-measured parallaxes, interferometric angular diameters and rates of period change allows for predictions of Cepheid mass loss and stellar mass. Using the stellar evolution models, We find that l Car has a mass of about 9 M⊙ consistent with stellar pulsation models, but is not undergoing enhanced stellar mass loss. Conversely, the rate of period change for Polaris requires including enhanced mass-loss rates. We discuss what these different results imply for Cepheid evolution and the mass-loss mechanism on the Cepheid instability strip.

We present an influence of mass loss, element diffusion and convective overshooting on instability areas of SPBsg stars with masses of 13 - 18 M⊙. Evolutionary phases before and after helium core ignition are considered. We discuss how these effects affect the structure of the blue loops and hence a coverage of instability areas.

We give an update of the observations and analysis of G2 – the gaseous red emission-line object that is on a very eccentric orbit around the Galaxy's central black hole and predicted to come within 2400 RS in early 2014. During 2013, the laser guide star adaptive optics systems on the W. M. Keck I and II telescopes were used to obtain three epochs of spectroscopy and imaging at the highest spatial resolution currently possible in the near-IR. The updated orbital solution derived from radial velocities in addition to Br-γ line astrometry is consistent with our earlier estimates. Strikingly, even ∼ 6 months before pericenter passage there is no perceptible deviation from a Keplerian orbit. We furthermore show that a proposed “tail” of G2 is likely not associated with it but is rather an independent gas structure. We also show that G2 does not seem to be unique, since several red emission-line objects can be found in the central arcsecond. Taken together, it seems more likely that G2 is ultimately stellar in nature, although there is clearly gas associated with it.
