X-ray observations of young Planetary Nebulæ (PNe) have revealed diffuse emission in extended regions around both H-rich and H-deficient central stars. In order to also reproduce physical properties of H-deficient objects, we have, at first, extended our time-dependent radiation-hydrodynamic models with heat conduction for such conditions. Here we present some of the important physical concepts, which determine how and when a hot wind-blown bubble forms. In this study we have had to consider the, largely unknown, evolution of the CSPN, the slow (AGB) wind, the fast hot-CSPN wind, and the chemical composition. The main conclusion of our work is that heat conduction is needed to explain X-ray properties of wind-blown bubbles also in H-deficient objects.

Evolution of rotating globular clusters with embedded black holes is presented. The interplay between velocity diffusion due to relaxation and black hole star accretion is followed together with cluster rotation, using 2-dimensional, in energy and z-component of angular momentum, Fokker Planck numerical methods. Gravogyro and gravothermal instabilities drive the system to a faster evolution leading to shorter collapse times and a faster cluster dissolution in the tidal field of a parent galaxy.

Angular momentum transport and star accretion support the development of central rotation in relaxation time scales. Two-dimensional distribution (in the meridional plane) of kinematical and structural parameters (density, dispersions, rotation) are reproduced, with the aim to enable the use of set of models for comparison with observational data.

We present maps of a large number of dense molecular gas tracers across the central molecular zone of our Galaxy. The data were taken with the CSIRO/CASS Mopra telescope in Large Projects in the 1.3 cm, 7 mm, and 3 mm wavelength regimes. Here, we focus on the brightness of the shock tracers SiO and HNCO, molecules that are liberated from dust grains under strong (SiO) and weak (HNCO) shocks. The shocks may have occurred when the gas enters the bar regions and the shock differences could be due to differences in the moving cloud masses. Based on tracers of ionizing photons, it is unlikely that the morphological differences are due to selective photo-dissociation of the molecules. We also observe direct heating of molecular gas in strongly shocked zones, with high SiO/HNCO ratios, where temperatures are determined from the transitions of ammonia. Strong shocks appear to be the most efficient heating source of molecular gas, apart from high energy emission emitted by the central supermassive black hole Sgr A* and the processes within the extreme star formation region Sgr B2.

The IAU's Statistics and Exoplanets Focus Meeting brings together observers, modelers and methodologists to discuss the intricate challenges of extracting and interpreting faint planetary signals from dominant starlight. Initiated by the IAU's new groups concentrating on astroinformatics and astrostatistics, the meeting stimulated the wider exoplanetary community as well as experts in data and science analysis. This proceedings presented selected papers from the Focus Meeting.

High-resolution echelle spectroscopic observations taken with the FEROS spectrograph at the ESO 2.2-m telescope confirm the binary nature of the dMe stars EUVE J0825−16.3 and EUVE J1501−43.6, previously reported by Christian & Mathioudakis (2002). In these binary systems, emission of similar intensity from both components is detected in the Na i D1 & D2, He i D3, Ca II H&K, Ca II IRT and Balmer lines. We have determined precise radial velocities by cross-correlation with radial velocity standard stars, which have allowed us to obtain for the first time the orbital solution of these systems. Both binaries consist of two nearly equal M0V components with an orbital period shorter than 3.5 days. We have analyzed the behaviour of the chromospheric activity indicators (variability and possible flares). In addition, we have determined its rotational velocity and kinematics.

The ubiquity of star-forming dwarf galaxies (SFDG) in the local Universe allows us to trace their evolution in all type of environments, from voids to rich clusters. SFDGs in low-density regions are still assembling their mass, they often show peculiar gas morphology and kinematics, likely associated to external gas accretion or galaxy interactions, and they can experience strong bursts of star formation. The most metal-poor SFDGs are found in the field and they are unique laboratories to investigate the star formation process in the low-metallicity regime, at conditions similar to their high-redshift analogues. On the other hand, SFDGs in intermediate- and high-density environments provide a key to understand the processes that remove their interstellar medium (ISM) and suppress star formation, leading to the different types of gas-poor early-type dwarfs. We review the most recent results on the properties of SFDGs at low and high galaxy densities focusing in particular on the impact of a cluster environment on their ISM components (dust, molecular, atomic and ionised gas). We analyse the population of SFDGs in the nearest rich clusters: Virgo, which is still in the process of assembly, and Fornax, which is more dynamically evolved, more compact and denser. We discuss how the different evolutionary stage of the two structures affects the properties of SFDGs.

We present the first detailed three-dimensional hydrodynamic implicit large eddy simulations of turbulent convection for carbon burning. The simulations start with an initial radial profile mapped from a carbon burning shell within a 15 M⊙ stellar evolution model. We considered 4 resolutions from 1283 to 10243 zones. These simulations confirm that convective boundary mixing (CBM) occurs via turbulent entrainment as in the case of oxygen burning. The expansion of the boundary into the surrounding stable region and the entrainment rate are smaller at the bottom boundary because it is stiffer than the upper boundary. The results of this and similar studies call for improved CBM prescriptions in 1D stellar evolution models.

This article summarises the subject matter of Special Session 3 at IAU General Assembly XXVII in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which took place on August 6-7, 2009. In it, we overview the state of Astronomy in Antarctica as it is in 2009. Significant astronomical activity is now taking place at four stations on the Antarctic plateau (South Pole, Domes A, C & F), as well as at the coastal station of McMurdo.

Cosmological simulations predict that early-type galaxies (ETGs) are the results of extended mass accretion histories. The latter are characterized by different numbers of mergers, mergers’ mass ratios and gas fractions, and timing. Depending on the sequence and nature of these mergers that follow the first phase of the in-situ star formation, these accretion histories may lead to ETGs that have low or high mass halos, and that rotate fast or slow. Since the stellar halos maintain the fossil records of the events that led to their formation, a discontinuity may be in place between the inner regions of ETGs and their outer halos, because the time required for the halos’ stars to exchange their energies and momenta is very long compared with the age of these systems. Exquisite deep photometry and extended spectroscopy for significant samples of ETGs are then used to quantify the occurrence and significance of such a transition in the galaxies’ structural and kinematical parameters. Once this transition radius is measured, its dependency with the effective radius of the galaxies’ light distribution and total stellar masses can be investigated. Such correlations can then be compared with the predictions of accreted, i.e. ex-situ vs. in-situ components from cosmological simulations to validate such models.

Multi-wave astronomy provides a means for researchers to see and ‘hear’ the sky. But that is only part of their perception of the cosmos. The hot handshake of the Universe in the form of a meteor substance burning in the Earth’s atmosphere, sometimes with the precipitation of meteorites threatening the environment, occurs every second. A major present challenge for meteor research is organizing observations and processing existing and new data in order to obtain information in the time domain of meteor astronomy for solving special problems. This poster discusses the concept of the meteor sky, and some approaches for constructing models of it. The database of meteors of Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics was used.

PSRSalsa is a versatile open-source pulsar data-analysis project designed to obtain a comprehensive picture of the radio properties of your pulsar of choice. Here its usefulness is demonstrated through the analysis of the radio pulsar B1839–04, thereby revealing the extremely rare phenomenon of “bi-drifting” where the drift direction of subpulses is systematically different in different pulse profile components.

Recent optical polarization studies indicate that there are two distinct types of QSOs — “normal” QSOs with P ≲ 1%, and highly polarized QSOs (HPQs) with P > 3%. The HPQs are very similar to BL Lac objects, yet still share some properties of normal QSO's (e.g. strong emission lines). Our results generally support the relativistic beaming model for QSOs; however, certain key predictions of this model are not observed.

Several years after outburst, extended optical emission can be seen around many classical novae. Common features include shells, polar ‘blobs’, equatorial rings and, at least in the case of DQ Her (1934), tropical rings above and below the ‘equator’. We present hydrodynamic calculations of the dynamical effects of the underlying binary system on the material ejected during outburst, and show that many of the features observed in the optical remnants of novae can be reproduced. Polar blobs, banded shells and spherical shells can all be obtained in the model, depending on the speed class of the nova.

This contribution presents the ongoing work to develop the Sensing the Dynamic Universe (SDU) webpage elements, based on the sonoUno framework, a user centered software for sonification of astronomical data. The SDU provides an inclusive experience that transcends the approach of assuming and limiting design based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and ISO recommendations.

The preliminary results of a search for OH/IR stars in the Galactic Centre using the VLA are presented. The goal of this project is to determine the mass density distribution from a few parsecs up to about 120 pc of the Galactic Centre using stellar kinematics. Up to now, 125 OH/IR stars have been found. The distribution of the stars is clearly elongated with the major axis parallel to the galactic equator. The stars show a rotation of 117 km s−1 deg−1 with a dispersion of 90 km s−1. Two preliminary models have been applied in order to determine the enclosed mass, resulting in M(r)=4.0·106·r1.4 Mo, where r is the galactocentric distance in parsecs.

The current status of microturbulent velocity and abundance determinations for A and F dwarfs in open clusters is reviewed. A programme to observe several tens of A and F dwarfs in open clusters of various ages was initiated several years ago. We have performed high resolution high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of stars well distributed in mass along the Main Sequence. Microturbulent velocities and abundances of several chemical elements have been derived iteratively by fitting grids of synthetic spectra calculated in LTE to the observed spectra. Curve of growths were used in a few instances as well. The results obtained are reviewed for Coma Berenices, the Pleiades, Alpha Persei and the Ursa Major moving group.

The microturbulent velocities exhibit a broad maximum in the range A5V to about F0V as indicated in Smalley (2004).

PC 11 (HD 149427, PK 331-5 1) is classified as a young planetary nebula with strong OIII 4363Å and a Zanstra temperature of TZ = 27000K. It is also classified as (D′ — type) yellow symbiotic star with A — F type companion. It is an IRAS source with detached cold dust with far intrared (IRAS) colours similar to planetary nebulae. The IUE short wavelength (SWP) spectra show emission lines due to OIII] (1661/1666Å). NIII] (1746/1754Å) CIII] (1907/1909Å). The OIII] and NIII] emission lines show significant variation. Variation in the strength of CIII] is not very significant. The strength of OIII] has decreased and NIII] has increased. The long wavelength (LWP) spectrum shows stellar continuum (A-F) and absorption lines due Mg II 2800Å feature. It also show emission lines at 2772Å (?) 3133Å −3140Å (very strong) (OIII, [FeV], 3209Å (He II?) ([FEII]). The variation in the strength of emission line due OIII] and NIII] and the presence of stellar continuum (A-F) suggests that the central star of PC 11 is a binary.

Recently derived bolometric absolute magnitudes are used to investigate the pulsational properties of some classes of red variables. The Mira variables with periods over 200 days have pulsation constants appropriate to overtone pulsatore but the shorter period 135 day Miras seem to be hotter and less luminous and may be fundamental pulsators. The large amplitude Shapley-Nail variables in the SMC are probably fundamental pulsators with masses in the 5-10 solar range. Bright supergiant red variables in the LMC show evidence of the period-luminosity relation expected if they are in the early stages of core helium burning.

Galactic D/H evaluations from observations completed in the far UV with first the Copernicus satellite then followed by IUE and the GHRS on the HST studies already suggest that D/H variations may be present in the interstellar medium. More recent IMAPS (the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph) observations confirm that conclusion while new STIS (which replaced the GHRS on board HST) studies seem to indicate the contrary. The situation is discussed here.

Hopefully FUSE (the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, launched the 24th of June 1999) will give access to the D/H ratio in many different galactic sites. This will help us reach a better global view of the evolution of that key element, and thus better constrain any evaluation of its primordial abundance.

The evolution of close binaries is discussed in connection with problems concerning mass and angular momentum losses. Theoretical and observational evidence for outflow of matter, leaving the system during evolution is given: statistics on total masses and mass ratios, effects of the accretion of the mass gaining component, the presence of streams, disks, rings, circumstellar envelopes, period changes, abundance changes in the atmosphere.

The effects of outflowing matter on the evolution is outlined, and estimates of the fraction of matter expelled by the loser, and leaving the system, are given. The various time scales involved with evolution and observation are compared. Examples of non conservative evolution are discussed.

Problems related to contact phases, on mass and energy losses, in connection with entropy changes are briefly analysed. For advanced stages the disruption probabilities for supernova explosions are examined. A global picture is given for the evolution of massive close binaries, from ZAMS, through WR phases, X-ray phases, leading to runaway pulsars or to a binary pulsar and later to a millisecond pulsar.
