Some arguments, none entirely conclusive, are reviewed about the origin of magnetic fields in neutron stars, with emphasis of processes during and following core collapse in supernovae. Possible origins of the magnetic fields of neutron stars include inheritance from the main sequence progenitor and dynamo action at some stage of evolution of progenitor. Inheritance is not sufficient to explain the fields of magnetars. Energetic considerations point to differential rotation in the final stages of core collapse process as the most likely source of field generation, at least for magnetars. A runaway phase of exponential growth is needed to achieve sufficient field amplification during relevant phase of core collapse; it can probably be provided by a some form of magnetorotational instability. Once formed in core collapse, the field is in danger of decaying again by magnetic instabilities. The evolution of a magnetic field in a newly formed neutron star is discussed, with emphasis on the existence of stable equilibrium configurations as end products of this evolution, and the role of magnetic helicity in their existence. A particularly puzzling problem is the large range of field strengths observed in neutron stars (as well as in A stars and white dwarfs). It implies that a single, deterministic process is insufficient to explain the origin of the magnetic fields in these stars.

We investigate the improved detection of extrasolar planets around eclipsing binaries using eclipse minima timing and extrasolar moons around transiting planets using transit timing offered by the upcoming COROT (ESA, 2005), Kepler (NASA, 2007), and Eddington (ESA 2008) spacecraft missions. Hundreds of circum-binary planets should be discovered and a thorough survey of moons around transiting planets will be accomplished by these missions.

In Part III, we first discuss the LiBeB observations in subgiant stars and the constraints they bring on the transport processes occuring on the main sequence. Evidence is then reviewed that suggests that in situ mixing occurs in evolved low mass Population I and Population II stars. Theoretical mechanisms that can create such mixing are discussed, as well as their implications for the evolution of the LiBeB and 3He.

High resolution N-body simulations show that the density profiles of dark matter halos formed in the standard CDM cosmogony can be fit accurately by scaling a simple “universal” profile. Regardless of their mass, halos are nearly isothermal over a large range in radius, but significantly shallower than r–2 near the center and steeper than r–2 in the outer regions. The characteristic overdensity of a halo correlates strongly with halo mass in a manner consistent with the mass dependence of the epoch of halo formation. Matching the shape of the rotation curves of disk galaxies with this halo structure requires (i) disk mass-to-light ratios to increase systematically with luminosity, (ii) halo circular velocities to be systematically lower than the disk rotation speed, and (iii) that the masses of halos surrounding bright galaxies depend only weakly on galaxy luminosity. This offers an attractive explanation for the puzzling lack of correlation between luminosity and dynamics in observed samples of binary galaxies and of satellite companions of bright spiral galaxies, suggesting that the structure of dark matter halos surrounding bright spirals is similar to that of cold dark matter halos.

Despite theoretical predictions of the existence of many submillimeter masers, and some pioneering observational discoveries over the past few decades, these lines have remained relatively unstudied due to (i) challenges associated with observing at shorter wavelength; and, (ii) the lack of possibility of high (< 14″ at 345 GHz) angular resolution observations. With the advent of the SMA, the first submillimeter imaging array capable of sub-arcsecond resolution, APEX, and the promise of ALMA, opportunities are opening for performing new science with millimeter/submillmeter masers. In this talk, I will review recent work in the field - including extragalactic H2O millimeter masers, hydrogen recombination masers, submillimeter masers in star-forming regions, and in the envelopes of evolved stars - and discuss prospects for the future.

The inventory of interstellar and solar system molecules now numbers well over 100 species, including both ions and neutrals. Gas-phase formation routes to many of the observed organics are still uncertain, so that solid-phase syntheses are of interest. Low-temperature reactions are thought to occur within interstellar ices, on ice and grain surfaces in the interstellar medium (ISM), and on icy surfaces of solar system objects (e.g., Europa, Pluto). Ionizing radiation, such as cosmic rays, and far-UV photons are two possible initiators of such chemistry.

In the Cosmic Ice Lab at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, we can study both the photo-and radiation-induced chemistries of ices at 8–300 K. Our most-recent work has been motivated by the detections of ethylene glycol, HOCH2CH2OH, in the ISM (Hollis et al. 2002) and in comet Hale-Bopp (Crovisier et al. 2002). Ethylene glycol is currently the largest firmly-identified cometary molecule as well as one of the larger interstellar organics. It's formation and accompanying chemistry provide challenges and tests for current astrochemical thought.

Here we discuss laboratory experiments on ethylene glycol's solid-phase formation and destruction. Using infrared spectroscopy, we have identified low-temperature radiation-chemical pathways that lead from known interstellar ices, such as either CH3OH or H<2O and CO, to ethylene glycol. We also have identified a role for ethylene glycol in the formation of glycolaldehyde, HOCH2C(O)H, a simple sugar (Hollis, Lovas, & Jewell 2000). Related to these results are the 6-and 7-atom molecules formed by oxidation and reduction processes in irradiated H2O + C2H<2 ices. Analogous experiments have been conducted on two other triply-bonded molecules in H<2O-rich ice, HCN and N2. An important focus of our work is the development of reaction schemes for the formation of complex molecules within astrochemically-relevant ices, and the use of such schemes to predict new molecules awaiting detection.

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) provides us with our most direct observational window to the early universe. Observations of the temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB have played a critical role in defining the now-standard cosmological model. In this contribution we review some of the basics of CMB science, highlighting the role of observations made with ground-based and balloon-borne Antarctic telescopes. Most of the ingredients of the standard cosmological model are poorly understood in terms of fundamental physics. We discuss how current and future CMB observations can address some of these issues, focusing on two directly relevant for Antarctic programmes: searching for gravitational waves from inflation via B-mode polarization, and mapping dark matter through CMB lensing.

Anhydrous interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), which are the most mineralogically primitive extraterrestrial materials available for laboratory analysis, contain several percent organic matter. The high O:C and N:C ratios suggest the organic matter in the anhydrous IDPs is significantly less altered by thermal processing than the organic matter in meteorites. X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy demonstrate the presence of C=C, most likely as C-rings, C=O, and aliphatic C-H2 and C-H3 in all the IDPs examined. A D-rich spot, containing material that is believed to have formed in a cold molecular cloud, has C-XANES and infrared spectra very similar to the organic matter in the anhydrous IDPs, possibly indicating a common formation mechanism. However the primitive organic matter in the IDPs differs from the interstellar/circumstellar organic matter characterized by astronomical infrared spectroscopy in the relative strengths of the asymmetric aliphatic C-H2 and C-H3 absorptions, with the IDP organic having a longer mean chain length. If both types of organic matter originated by the same process, this may indicate the interstellar organic matter has experienced more severe radiation processing than the organic matter in the primitive IDPs.

Much has been learned about the physics and chemistry of comets from the successful spacecraft encounters and intensive remote observing programs of Comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner. Instead of being the panacea for our comet curiosity, these tantalizing “snapshots” have raised new questions, and many fundamental problems remain unsolved. To reap fuller benefits, extensive modeling is necessary to characterize the physical structure and chemical properties of the coma and to infer the composition and structure of the nucleus.

Young A-type stars in the pre–main-sequence (PMS) evolutionary phase are particularly interesting objects since they cover the mass range ($\sim$1.5-4 $M_\odot$) which is most sensitive to the internal conditions inherited from the protostellar phase. In particular, they undergo a process of thermal relaxation from which they emerge as fully radiative objects contracting towards the Main Sequence. A-type stars also show intense surface activity (including winds, accretion, pulsations) whose origin is still not completely understood, and infrared excesses related to the presence of circumstellar disks and envelopes. Disks display significant evolution in the dust properties, likely signalling the occurrence of protoplanetary growth. The advent of radio astronomy provides a new observational tool for arriving at tests of the different theoretical cosmologies. The tests may be either wholly new, or revivals in a more cogent form of earlier work in visual astronomy.

We review our present knowledge about the formation and evolution of planetary nebulae and discuss the relevant processes responsible in creating and shaping planetary nebulae out of a cool AGB wind envelope. Based on 1D simulations we show that a hydrodynamical treatment along the upper AGB leads quite naturally to more realistic starting configurations for planetaries with density slopes steeper than r−2. Taking into account photoionization and wind interaction in a realistic manner, the hydrodynamics of post-AGB wind envelopes leads to density structures and velocity fields in close resemblance to observations of spherical or elliptical planetary nebulae.

The Solar Orbiter is the next solar physics mission of the European Space Agency, ESA, in collaboration with NASA, with a launch planned in 2018. The spacecraft is designed to approach the Sun to within 0.28 AU at perihelion of a highly eccentric orbit. The proximity with the Sun will also allow its observation at uniformly high resolution at EUV and visible wavelengths. Such observations are central for learning more about the magnetic coupling of the solar atmosphere. At a later phase in the mission the spacecraft will leave the ecliptic and study the enigmatic poles of the Sun from a heliographic latitude of up to 33○.

A central instrument of Solar Orbiter} is the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager, SO/PHI. It will do full Stokes imaging in the Landé g = 2.5 Fe I 617.3 nm line. It is composed of two telescopes, a full-disk telescope and a high-resolution telescope, that will allow observations at a resolution as high as 200 km on the solar surface. SO/PHI will also be the first solar polarimeter to leave the Sun-Earth line, opening up new possibilities, such as stereoscopic polarimetry (besides stereoscopic imaging of the photosphere and stereoscopic helioseismology). Finally, SO/PHI will have a unique view of the solar poles, allowing not just more precise and exact measurements of the polar field than possible so far, but also enabling us to follow the dynamics of individual magnetic features at high latitudes and to determine solar surface and sub-surface flows right up to the poles.

In this paper an introduction to the science goals and the capabilities of SO/PHI will be given, as well as a brief overview of the instrument and of the current status of its development.

We recently identified several emission bands in the Spitzer-IRS spectrum of the unusual planetary nebula Tc 1 with the infrared active vibrational modes of the neutral fullerene species C60 and C70. Since then, the fullerene bands have been detected in a variety of sources representing circumstellar and interstellar environments. Abundance estimates suggest that C60 represents ~0.1%–1.5% of the available carbon in those sources. The observed relative band intensities in various sources are not fully compatible with single-photon heating and fluorescent cooling, and are better reproduced by a thermal distribution at least in some sources. The observational data suggests that fullerenes form in the circumstellar environments of evolved stars, and survive in the interstellar medium. Precisely how they form is still a matter of debate.

We explore the properties of sound and human sound recognition as a means to enhance and accelerate visual-only data analysis methods. The aim of this work is to enable and improve the analysis of large data sets, data requiring rapid analysis, multi-dimensional data, and signal detection in data with low signal-to-noise ratio. We present a prototype tool, StarSound, to sonify data such as astronomical transient light curves, spectra, and power spectra. Stereophonic sound is used to ‘visualise’ and localise the data under examination, and 3-D sound is discussed in conjunction with virtual reality technology, as a means to enhance analysis efficiency and efficacy, including rapid data assessment and training machine learning software. In addition, we explore the use of higher-order harmonics as a means to examine simultaneously multi-dimensional data sets. Such an approach can allow the data to be interpreted in a holistic manner and facilitates the discovery of previously unseen connections and relationships. Furthermore, we exploit the capability of the human brain for selective or focused hearing that enables the identification of desired signals in noisy data, or amidst similar or more significant signals. Finally, we provide research examples that benefit directly from data sonification. The work presented here aims to help tackle the challenges of the upcoming era of Big Data and help optimise, speed up and expand aspects of data analysis requiring human interaction.

The estimation of molecular abundances in interstellar clouds from spectroscopic observations requires radiative transfer calculations, which depend on basic molecular input data. This paper reviews recent developments in the fields of molecular data and radiative transfer. The first part is an overview of radiative transfer techniques, along with a “road map” showing which technique should be used in which situation. The second part is a review of measurements and calculations of molecular spectroscopic and collisional data, with a summary of recent collisional calculations and suggested modeling strategies if collision data are unavailable. The paper concludes with an overview of future developments and needs in the areas of radiative transfer and molecular data.

Our systematic searches for carbon stars in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope have led to more than a doubling of the number of carbon stars known in this system, to 104. Furthermore, low-luminosity carbon stars resembling those we had previously found in the Small Magellanic Cloud have been identified in this system. We review the carbon star surveys carried out in the Fornax dwarf and present our main results. The Fornax carbon star population is compared to those of other Galactic halo dwarf systems.

Based on the SOHO/LASCO dataset, a collection of “structured” coronal mass ejections (CMEs) has been compiled within the period 1996-2002, in order to analyze their three-dimensional configuration. These CME events exhibit white-light fine structures, likely indicative of their possible 3D topology. From a detailed investigation of the associated low coronal and photospheric source regions, a generic scheme has been deduced, which considers the white-light topology of a CME projected in the plane of the sky as being primarily dependent on the orientation and position of the source region's neutral line on the solar disk. The obtained results imply that structured CMEs are essentially organized along a symmetry axis, in a cylindrical manner. The measured dimensions of the cylinder's base and length yield a ratio of 1.6. This paper consists of two independent parts.

1. (1) The Monte Carlo method for computing the evolution of spherical stellar systems has been modified so that the computation can be continued after the time of formation of the central singularity. Results are presented for systems with equal and unequal star masses. The initial core-halo formation is followed by a general expansion of the cluster, while the central singularity absorbs a growing fraction of the total negative energy.

2. (2) Theoretical expressions of the ‘diffusion coefficients’, which describe the effect of encounters in a stellar system, contain a factor In(γN) where N is the number of stars and γ is a constant usually taken to be of the order of 0.4. A reconsideration of the ‘non-dominant terms’ leads to a substantially lower value, of the order of 0.15 for equal masses and 0.075 for unequal masses with a typical distribution. This correction improves the agreement between N-body and Monte Carlo simulations of spherical systems.
