Explicit expressions are derived for the inverses of operators of a particular class that includes the operator corresponding to a system of coupled integral equations having weighted difference kernels. The inverses are expressed in terms of a finite number of functions and a systematic way of generating different sets of these functions is devised. The theory generalizes those previously derived for a single integral equation and an integral-equation system with pure difference kernels. The connection is made between the finite generation of inverses and embedding.

We consider the eigenvalue equation for the largest eigenvalue of certain kinds of non-compact linear operators given as the sum of a multiplication and a kernel operator. It is shown that, under moderate conditions, such operators can be approximated arbitrarily well by operators of finite rank, which constitutes a discretization procedure. For this purpose, two standard methods of approximation theory, the Nyström and the Galerkin method, are generalized. The operators considered describe models for mutation and selection of an infinitely large population of individuals that are labelled by real numbers, commonly called continuum-of-alleles models.

Let $w(z)$ be an arbitrary transcendental solution of the fourth (respectively, second) Painlevé equation. Concerning the frequency of poles in $|z|\le r$, it is shown that $n(r,w)\gg r^2$ (respectively, $n(r,w)\gg r^{3/2}$), from which the growth estimate $T(r,w)\gg r^2$ (respectively, $T(r,w)\gg r^{3/2}$) immediately follows.

Let $L_{\bm{a}}(\bm{z})=a_1z_1+a_2z_2+\cdots+a_Nz_N$ be a linear form in $N$ complex variables $z_1,z_2,\dots,z_N$ with non-zero coefficients. We establish several estimates for the logarithmic Mahler measure of $L_{\bm{a}}$. In general, we show that the logarithmic Mahler measure of $L_{\bm{a}}(\bm{z})$ and the logarithm of the norm of $\bm{a}$ differ by a bounded amount that is independent of $N$. We prove a further estimate which is useful for making an approximate numerical evaluation of the logarithmic Mahler measure.

In this paper we consider the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of a nonlinear elliptic boundary-value problem with nonlinear boundary conditions which arises in population dynamics. While bifurcation problems from lines of trivial solutions are studied, the existence of bifurcation positive solutions from infinity is discussed. The former will be caught by the reduction to a bifurcation equation following the Lyapunov and Schmidt procedure. The latter will be based on a variational argument depending on the corresponding constrained minimization problem.
