We study the Minkowski symmetry set of a closed smooth curve γ in the Minkowski plane. We answer the following question, which is analogous to one concerning curves in the Euclidean plane that was treated by Giblin and O’Shea (1990): given a point p on γ, does there exist a bi-tangent pseudo-circle that is tangent to γ both at p and at some other point q on γ? The answer is yes, but as pseudo-circles with non-zero radii have two branches (connected components) it is possible to refine the above question to the following one: given a point p on γ, does there exist a branch of a pseudo-circle that is tangent to γ both at p and at some other point q on γ? This question is motivated by the earlier quest of Reeve and Tari (2014) to define the Minkowski Blum medial axis, a counterpart of the Blum medial axis of curves in the Euclidean plane.

In this paper, we give an explicit realization of the universal SL2-representation rings of free groups by using ‘the ring of component functions’ of SL(2, ℂ)-representations of free groups. We introduce a descending filtration of the ring, and determine the structure of its graded quotients. Then we study the natural action of the automorphism group of a free group on the graded quotients, and introduce a generalized Johnson homomorphism. In the latter part of this paper, we investigate some properties of these homomorphisms from a viewpoint of twisted cohomologies of the automorphism group of a free group.

In this paper we use the Alexander ideals of groups to solve the isomorphism problem for the Baumslag–Solitar groups and a family of parafree groups introduced by Baumslag and Cleary.

Our first aim in this paper is to deal with the maximum principle for subfunctions in an arbitrary unbounded domain. As an application, we next give a result concerning the classical Phragmén–Lindelöf theorem for subfunctions in a cone. For a subfunction defined in a cone that is dominated on the boundary by a certain function, we finally generalize the Phragmén–Lindelöf type theorem by making a generalized harmonic majorant of it.

We prove that an integral Jacobson radical ring is always nil, which extends a well-known result from algebras over fields to rings. As a consequence we show that if every element x of a ring R is a zero of some polynomial px with integer coefficients, such that px(1) = 1, then R is a nil ring. With these results we are able to give new characterizations of the upper nilradical of a ring and a new class of rings that satisfy the Köthe conjecture: namely, the integral rings.

We study two different heat-type equations. First, global well-posedness in the energy space of some high-order semilinear heat-type equation with exponential nonlinearity is obtained for even space dimensions. Second, a finite-time blow-up result for the critical monomial focusing heat equation with the p-Laplacian is proved.

Let μ λ be the Bernoulli convolution associated with λ ∈ (0, 1). The well-known result of Jorgensen and Pedersen shows that if λ = 1/(2k) for some k ∈ ℕ, then μ 1/(2k) is a spectral measure with spectrum Γ(1/(2k)). The recent research on the spectrality of μ λ shows that μ λ is a spectral measure only if λ = 1/(2k) for some k ∈ ℕ. Moreover, for certain odd integer p, the multiple set pΓ(1/(2k)) is also a spectrum for μ 1/(2k). This is surprising because some spectra for the measure μ 1/(2k) are thinning. In this paper we mainly characterize the number p that has the above property. By applying the properties of congruences and the order of elements in the finite group, we obtain several conditions on p such that pΓ(1/(2k)) is a spectrum for μ 1/(2k).

This paper deals with the class of Schrödinger–Kirchhoff-type biharmonic problems

where Δ2 denotes the biharmonic operator, and f ∈ C(ℝN × ℝ, ℝ) satisfies the Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz-type conditions. Under appropriate assumptions on V and f, the existence of infinitely many solutions is proved by using the symmetric mountain pass theorem.

We discuss the solvability of the periodic Navier problem for the plate equation with forced vibrations xtt (t, y)+Δ2 x(t, y)+l(t, y, x(t, y)) = 0 in higher dimensions with side lengths being irrational numbers and the nonlinearity being superlinear. We also derive a new dual variational method.

Let be a single vertex k-graph and let be the von Neumann algebra induced from the Gelfand–Naimark–Segal (GNS) representation of a distinguished state ω of its k-graph C*-algebra . In this paper we prove the factoriality of , and furthermore determine its type when either has the little pullback property, or the intrinsic group of has rank 0. The key step to achieving this is to show that the fixed-point algebra of the modular action corresponding to ω has a unique tracial state.

We consider a fractional equation involving the left and right Riemann–Liouville fractional integrals and with Sturm–Liouville boundary-value conditions. We establish the variational structure of the problem and, by using critical-point theory, the existence of an unbounded sequence of solutions is obtained.

Through appropriate choices of elements in the underlying iterated function system, the methodology of fractal interpolation enables us to associate a family of continuous self-referential functions with a prescribed real-valued continuous function on a real compact interval. This procedure elicits what is referred to as an α-fractal operator on , the space of all real-valued continuous functions defined on a compact interval I. With an eye towards connecting fractal functions with other branches of mathematics, in this paper we continue to investigate the fractal operator in more general spaces such as the space of all bounded functions and the Lebesgue space , and in some standard spaces of smooth functions such as the space of k-times continuously differentiable functions, Hölder spaces and Sobolev spaces . Using properties of the α-fractal operator, the existence of Schauder bases consisting of self-referential functions for these function spaces is established.

Let E → B be a fibre bundle and let Eʹ → B be a vector bundle. Let G be a compact Lie group acting fibre preservingly and freely on both E and Eʹ – 0, where 0 is the zero section of Eʹ → B. Let f : E → Eʹ be a fibre-preserving G-equivariant map and let Zf = {x ∈ E | f(x) = 0} be the zero set of f. In this paper we give a lower bound for the cohomological dimension of the zero set Zf when a fibre of E → B is a real Stiefel manifold with a free ℤ/2-action or a complex Stiefel manifold with a free 𝕊1-action. This generalizes a well-known result of Dold for sphere bundles equipped with free involutions.

In this paper, in terms of the hyperbolic metric, we give a condition under which the image of a hyperbolic domain of an analytic function contains a round annulus centred at the origin. From this, we establish results on the multiply connected wandering domains of a meromorphic function that contain large round annuli centred at the origin. We thereby successfully extend the results of transcendental meromorphic functions with finitely many poles to those with infinitely many poles.

In this paper it is shown that there are infinitely many extremal Beltrami differentials of non-landside type and non-constant modulus in a Teichmüller equivalence class if the class contains a landslide extremal. The result answers, affirmatively in a stronger sense, a problem posed by Li.

We prove that the canonical ring of a canonical variety in the sense of de Fernex and Hacon is finitely generated. We prove that canonical varieties are Kawamata log terminal (klt) if and only if is finitely generated. We introduce a notion of nefness for non-ℚ-Gorenstein varieties and study some of its properties. We then focus on these properties for non-ℚ-Gorenstein toric varieties.

We investigate a system of singular–degenerate parabolic equations with non-local terms, which can be regarded as a spatially heterogeneous competition model of Lotka–Volterra type. Applying the Leray–Schauder fixed-point theorem, we establish the existence of coexistence periodic solutions to the problem, which, together with the existing literature, gives a complete picture for such a system for all parameters.

In this paper we present the basic tools of a fractional function theory in higher dimensions by means of a fractional correspondence to the Weyl relations via fractional Riemann–Liouville derivatives. A Fischer decomposition, Almansi decomposition, fractional Euler and Gamma operators, monogenic projection, and basic fractional homogeneous powers are constructed. Moreover, we establish the fractional Cauchy–Kovalevskaya extension (FCK extension) theorem for fractional monogenic functions defined on ℝd . Based on this extension principle, fractional Fueter polynomials, forming a basis of the space of fractional spherical monogenics, i.e. fractional homogeneous polynomials, are introduced. We study the connection between the FCK extension of functions of the form xPl and the classical Gegenbauer polynomials. Finally, we present an example of an FCK extension.

The aim of this paper is to develop analytic techniques to deal with the monotonicity of certain combinatorial sequences. On the one hand, a criterion for the monotonicity of the function is given, which is a continuous analogue of a result of Wang and Zhu. On the other hand, the log-behaviour of the functions

is considered, where ζ(x) and Γ(x) are the Riemann zeta function and the Euler Gamma function, respectively. Consequently, the strict log-concavities of the function θ(x) (a conjecture of Chen et al.) and for some combinatorial sequences (including the Bernoulli numbers, the tangent numbers, the Catalan numbers, the Fuss–Catalan numbers, and the binomial coefficients are demonstrated. In particular, this contains some results of Chen et al., and Luca and Stănică. Finally, by researching the logarithmically complete monotonicity of some functions, the infinite log-monotonicity of the sequence

is proved. This generalizes two results of Chen et al. that both the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients are infinitely log-monotonic, and strengthens one result of Su and Wang that is log-convex in n for positive integers d > δ. In addition, the asymptotically infinite log-monotonicity of derangement numbers is showed. In order to research the stronger properties of the above functions θ(x) and F(x), the logarithmically complete monotonicity of functions

is also obtained, which generalizes the results of Lee and Tepedelenlioǧlu, and Qi and Li.
