Let A ⊂ B be an integral ring extension of integral domains with fields of fractions K and L, respectively. The integral degree of A ⊂ B, denoted by dA(B), is defined as the supremum of the degrees of minimal integral equations of elements of B over A. It is an invariant that lies in between dK(L) and μA(B), the minimal number of generators of the A-module B. Our purpose is to study this invariant. We prove that it is sub-multiplicative and upper-semicontinuous in the following three cases: if A ⊂ B is simple; if A ⊂ B is projective and finite and K ⊂ L is a simple algebraic field extension; or if A is integrally closed. Furthermore, d is upper-semicontinuous if A is noetherian of dimension 1 and with finite integral closure. In general, however, d is neither sub-multiplicative nor upper-semicontinuous.

We study the decompositions of Hilbert schemes induced by the Schubert cell decomposition of the Grassmannian variety and show that Hilbert schemes admit a stratification into locally closed subschemes along which the generic initial ideals remain the same. We give two applications. First, we give completely geometric proofs of the existence of the generic initial ideals and of their Borel fixed properties. Second, we prove that when a Hilbert scheme of non-constant Hilbert polynomial is embedded by the Grothendieck–Plücker embedding of a high enough degree, it must be degenerate.

Given a smooth compact surface without focal points and of higher genus, it is shown that its geodesic flow is semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow with a local product structure such that the semi-conjugation preserves time parametrization. It is concluded that the geodesic flow has a unique measure of maximal entropy.

A new criterion for local invertibility of slice regular quaternionic functions is obtained. This paper is motivated by the need to find a geometrical interpretation for analytic conditions on the real Jacobian associated with a slice regular function f. The criterion involves spherical and Cullen derivatives of f and gives rise to several geometric implications, including an application to related conformality properties.

This note is a report on the observation that the Fano–Enriques threefolds with terminal cyclic quotient singularities admit Calabi–Yau threefolds as their double coverings. We calculate the invariants of those Calabi–Yau threefolds when the Picard number is one. It turns out that all of them are new examples.

Let π: X → ℙn be the d-cyclic covering branched along a smooth hypersurface Y ⊂ ℙn of degree d, 3 ≤ d ≤ n. We identify the minimal rational curves on X with d-tangent lines of Y and describe the scheme structure of the variety of minimal rational tangents 𝒞x ⊂ ℙTx(X) at a general point x ∈ X. We also show that the projective isomorphism type of 𝒞x varies in a maximal way as x moves over general points of X.

Several Lebesgue-type decomposition theorems in analysis have a strong relation to the operation called the parallel sum. The aim of this paper is to investigate this relation from a new point of view. Namely, using a natural generalization of Arlinskii's approach (which identifies the singular part as a fixed point of a single-variable map) we prove the existence of a Lebesgue-type decomposition for non-negative sesquilinear forms. As applications, we also show how this approach can be used to derive analogous results for representable functionals, non-negative finitely additive measures, and positive definite operator functions. The focus is on the fact that each theorem can be proved with the same completely elementary method.

We study a class of parabolic equations which can be viewed as a generalized mean curvature flow acting on cylindrically symmetric surfaces with a Dirichlet condition on the boundary. We prove the existence of a unique solution by means of an approximation scheme. We also develop the theory of asymptotic stability for solutions of general parabolic problems.

In this paper, we study the initial boundary value problem for a class of fourth order damped wave equations with arbitrary positive initial energy. In the framework of the energy method, we further exploit the properties of the Nehari functional. Finally, the global existence and finite time blow-up of solutions are obtained.

In the present paper we deal with a quasilinear problem involving a singular term. By combining truncation techniques with variational methods, we prove the existence of three weak solutions. As far as we know, this is the first contribution in this direction in the high-dimensional case.

The equational complexity function $\beta \nu \,:\,{\open N} \to {\open N}$ of an equational class of algebras bounds the size of equation required to determine the membership of n-element algebras in . Known examples of finitely generated varieties with unbounded equational complexity have growth in Ω(nc), usually for c ≥ (1/2). We show that much slower growth is possible, exhibiting $O(\log_{2}^{3}(n))$ growth among varieties of semilattice-ordered inverse semigroups and additive idempotent semirings. We also examine a quasivariety analogue of equational complexity, and show that a finite group has polylogarithmic quasi-equational complexity function, bounded if and only if all Sylow subgroups are abelian.

Let A and G be finite groups and suppose that A acts via automorphisms on G with $(|A|, |G|)=1$. We study how certain conditions on the Sylow 2-subgroups of the fixed point subgroup of the action $C_G(A)$ may imply the non-simplicity or solubility of G.

We prove the birational rigidity of Fano complete intersections of index 1 with a singular point of high multiplicity, which can be close to the degree of the variety. In particular, the groups of birational and biregular automorphisms of these varieties are equal, and they are non-rational. The proof is based on the techniques of the method of maximal singularities, the generalized 4n2-inequality for complete intersection singularities and the technique of hypertangent divisors.

Let E be a uniformly convex and uniformly smooth real Banach space, and let E* be its dual. Let A : E → 2E* be a bounded maximal monotone map. Assume that A−1(0) ≠ Ø. A new iterative sequence is constructed which converges strongly to an element of A−1(0). The theorem proved complements results obtained on strong convergence of the proximal point algorithm for approximating an element of A−1(0) (assuming existence) and also resolves an important open question. Furthermore, this result is applied to convex optimization problems and to variational inequality problems. These results are achieved by combining a theorem of Reich on the strong convergence of the resolvent of maximal monotone mappings in a uniformly smooth real Banach space and new geometric properties of uniformly convex and uniformly smooth real Banach spaces introduced by Alber, with a technique of proof which is also of independent interest.

In this short note, we show that a construction by Ottem provides an example of a rationally connected variety that is not birationally equivalent to a Mori dream space with terminal singularities.

In the present paper, an inverse result of approximation, i.e. a saturation theorem for the sampling Kantorovich operators, is derived in the case of uniform approximation for uniformly continuous and bounded functions on the whole real line. In particular, we prove that the best possible order of approximation that can be achieved by the above sampling series is the order one, otherwise the function being approximated turns out to be a constant. The above result is proved by exploiting a suitable representation formula which relates the sampling Kantorovich series with the well-known generalized sampling operators introduced by Butzer. At the end, some other applications of such representation formulas are presented, together with a discussion concerning the kernels of the above operators for which such an inverse result occurs.

In this paper we study the Assouad dimension of graphs of certain Lévy processes and functions defined by stochastic integrals. We do this by introducing a convenient condition which guarantees a graph to have full Assouad dimension and then show that graphs of our studied processes satisfy this condition.

We examine situations, where representations of a finite-dimensional F-algebra A defined over a separable extension field K/F, have a unique minimal field of definition. Here the base field F is assumed to be a field of dimension ≼1. In particular, F could be a finite field or k(t) or k((t)), where k is algebraically closed. We show that a unique minimal field of definition exists if (a) K/F is an algebraic extension or (b) A is of finite representation type. Moreover, in these situations the minimal field of definition is a finite extension of F. This is not the case if A is of infinite representation type or F fails to be of dimension ≼1. As a consequence, we compute the essential dimension of the functor of representations of a finite group, generalizing a theorem of Karpenko, Pevtsova and the second author.
