Fifteen reference patterns of oxide ceramics are reported. Included in the fifteen reference patterns are data for nine high critical temperature superconducting oxide and related phases Ba2Cu3ErO7, Ba3.2Cu1.7Er0.8O6.1·xCO2, Ba2Cu3HoO7, Ba2Cu3(Pr0.5Y0.5)O7, Ba3Dy4O9, Ba3Yb4O9, (Ba0.6Sr0.4)2Cu3YO7, (Ba0.8Sr0.2)2Cu3YO7, and CuNd2O4. The general methods of producing diese X-ray powder diffraction reference patterns were described previously in this journal (Vol. 1, No. 1, pg. 40 (1986)). The symbols used in diis article are defined in the PDF cards.

The technique of standard addition in combination with powder X-ray diffraction was used to identify and quantify the amount of Ln3+ segregating into secondary phases from Ln3+doped alkaline earth aluminates. Results indicate that Ln3+ ions are more soluble in CaAl2O4 than SrAl2O4 and BaAl2O4, with this being rationalized by the structural details of the A sites. These results indicate that the enhancement of the luminescence afterglow obtained by doping AAl2O4:Eu2+ samples with Ln3+ ions is a result of much lower doping levels than previously thought.

The structure of BaSrR4O8 (where R=La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Eu, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) has been investigated, and the X-ray reference patterns of these compounds have been prepared using the Rietveld refinement technique. BaSrR2O4 are isostructural to BaR2O4, which have the CaFe2O4 structure type (orthorhombic, Pnam). The cell parameters of these compounds (R=Lu to La) range from 10.125 04(10) to 10.5501(8) Å for a, 3.362 49(3) to 3.692 04(24) Å for b, 11.846 91(13) to 12.5663(9) Å for c, and 403.33 to 489.47 Å3 for V, respectively. There is a linear relationship between V and the Shannon ionic radius of R. Unlike the BaR2O4 compositions (R=Tm, Lu, and Yb), which produced a mixture of Ba3R4O9 and unreacted lanthanide oxides, single-phase BaSrTm4O8, BaSrLu4O8, and BaSrYb4O8 were successfully prepared.

The compound Er2BaF8 is prepared by heating appropriate amounts of BaF2 and ErF3 at 900 °C for 18 h in a dry argon filled quartz ampoule. The polycrystalline sample obtained was characterized by a Rietveld refinement of the observed powder diffraction data. This compound crystallizes in a monoclinic lattice with unit cell parameters: a=6.9620(2), b=10.4960(3), c=4.2541(1) Å and β=99.685(1)°, V=306.14(1) Å3, Z=2, (space group C 2/m, No. 12). The structure analysis reveals the presence of one kind of Ba and Er atoms in the unit cell. There are three different kinds of fluorine atoms, namely F1, F2, and F3 in the ratio of 8:4:4. The Er atoms form a square-antiprism polyhedron with eight fluorine atoms, which share three of its edges to form a ring of six ErF8 polyhedra. The rings of ErF8 polyhedra are connected via two opposite corners along the c-axis of the unit cell. The voids formed within the rings are occupied by Ba atoms, which maintain a twelve-coordination polyhedron with the fluorine atoms. As per the Rietveld analysis, the F3 site may exist as a disordered state by shifting the fluorine atom from the two-fold axes. © 2004 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Precise X-ray powder diffraction patterns of hydrated and anhydrous thallium pentaborates have been collected on a D5000 diffractometer with a primary monochromated beam (λ Cu Kα1=1.5406 Å). Refinement of indexed reflections led to the following unit cell parameters: a=11.279(1)Å, b=7.1507(6)Å, c=13.953(1)Å, β=94.164(7)° in the P21/c space group with Z=4, Dx=2.713 gcm−3, Dm=2.6 gcm−3 for Tl[B5O6(OH)4]·2H2O and a=7.5698(5)Å, b=11.9509(6)Å, c=14.759(1)Å in the Pbca space group with Z=8, Dx=3.844 gcm−3, Dm=3.6 gcm−3 for TlB5O8. Very good Smith and Snyder figures of merit have been obtained: F30=139.7 (0.0043, 50) for Tl[B5O6(OH)4]·2H2O and F30=139.3 (0.0054, 40) for TlB5O8.

Four manganese carbonyl complexes: CpMn(CO)3 (1) and its phenylvinylidene derivatives Cp(CO)2Mn=C=CHPh (2), [Cp(CO)2Mn]2(μ-C=CHPh) (3), and Cp(CO)2Mn=C=C(Ph)–C(Ph)=C=Mn(CO)2Cp (4) have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction and their unit cell parameters are reported. The monoclinic cell parameters found for complex (1) are a=12.0479(7) Å, b=7.0614(5) Å, c=10.9172(6) Å, β=117.626(2)°, Z=4, space group P2(1)/a (No. 14). The orthorhombic cells parameters for complex (2) are a=10.5240(12) Å, b=33.1105(48) Å, c=7.5007(9) Å, Z=8, space group PCCN (No. 56); for complex (3) are a=15.3545(17) Å, b=15.3966(18) Å, c=8.0033(7) Å, Z=4, space group P21212121 (No. 19). The parameters found for complexes (1–3) are in good agreement with those obtained from single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The single crystal structure of complex (4) has not been studied. The orthorhombic cell parameters for complex (4) found by X-ray powder diffraction method are a=10.0986(9) Å, b=33.2937(27) Å, c=7.4139(5) Å, Z=4, space group P21 (No. 4).

Powder diffraction data for 2-aminophenalenone at 295 K (P21/n, Z=4) are given, strong lines: 7.54/X, 7.26/9, 3.34/3. The cell parameters found are a=3.7213(3), b=16.550(2), c=15.095(2) Å, β=92.61(2)°. The crystal structure was determined using powder data and refined giving Rb=0.089. Disordered molecules form stacks along [100] with interplanar spacing of 3.48 Å.

X-ray powder diffraction data are reported for the trihydrated (A3N), the dihydrated (A2N), and the anhydrous ammonium trioxalatoaluminate (III) (AN). A3N is triclinic with space group . A2N and AN are monoclinic with space groups P21/c and P21/n respectively. The stability domains are A3N: –7.8 to 86 °C; A2N: 86 to 102 °C; AN: 102 to 180 °C.

Amantadine hydrochloride, p-aminophenol hydrochloride, and methylamine hydrochloride, compounds often studied in pharmacology, were investigated by means of powder diffractometry. The chemical formula of the first compound is C10H17N HCl and crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2∕c (15) with lattice parameters a=2.0279(6) nm, b=1.1171(2) nm, c=9.759(4) nm, and β=109.00(3)°. p-Aminophenol hydrochloride C6H7NO HCl crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group P222 with lattice parameters a=0.6619(2) nm, b=0.88461(2) nm, and c=0.6101(2) nm. Methylamine hydrochloride CH5N∙HCl crystallizes in the tetragonal system, space group P4∕nmm (129) with lattice parameters a=b=0.6068(1) nm and c=0.50689(8) nm.

Powder-diffraction data were collected for a Chinese sample of ferrimolybdite. This mineral is orthorhombic, space group Pmmn or Pm21n, with a = 6.665(2), b = 15.423(5), c = 29.901(8), and V = 3074(1) Å3.

The compounds, BaR2Ti3O10: R = La, Pr, Nd and Sm; BaR2Ti4O12: R = La, Pr, Sm, Gd, Eu have been prepared by solid state reaction and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Unit cell data are summarised; lattice parameters and unit cell volumes increase approximately linearly with lanthanide ion size.

The X-ray powder diffraction patterns for tetramethylammonium bromide and iodide have been measured from near room temperature up to decomposition/sublimation. The unit cell parameters were refined and the coefficients of thermal expansion calculated. Unlike N(CH3)4Cl [M. Stammler, J. Inorg. Nucl. Chem. 29, 2203–2221 (1967)], N(CH3)4Br (1Br) and N(CH3)4I (1I) undergo no solid–solid transitions before decomposition/sublimation as was observed earlier by thermal analysis [S. S. Chang and E. F. Westrum, J. Chem. Phys. 36(9), 2420–2423 (1962); Coulter etal., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 62, 2845–2851 (1940); Xenopoulos etal., Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst. 214, 63–79 (1992)].

The potassium μ-Oxo-bis(oxodiperoxovanadate)(4-) hydrate K4[O{VO(O2)2}2]*H2O was prepared, and its X-ray powder diffraction patterns have been recorded at room temperature. The unit cell parameters were refined to a=6.7097(1) Å, b=9.9574(1) Å, c=15.8250(3) Å, β=93.69(6)°, space group P21/c (14). The sample of K4V2O11*H2O was characterized by IR spectroscopy and analytical investigation. Results of crystal structure refinement by Rietveld method are presented; final RF and Rwp are 13 and 16%, respectively.

The crystal structure of Cr2[Ni(CN)4]3·10H2O has been determined on X-ray diffraction powder data by means of the Rietveld method. The starting model was based on the isomorphic, disordered structure of Mn3[Co(CN)6]2·12H2O. At room temperature the crystal is cubic, F4¯3m, a=10.097(6) Å, V=1029.4(5) Å3. The structure is disordered and contains 1.33 formula weights per unit cell. The Ni and Cr ions are coordinated by N and C atoms, respectively, forming octahedra linked by CN groups. The water molecules replace partly the chromium, carbon, and nitrogen positions in the crystal. The final R values are: Rwp=0.032 (Rexp=0.023), RB=0.088, and DW-Stat.=1.31 (DWexp=1.8).

Five new aliphatic-aromatic thiodiols: 1,2-bis[4-(2′-hydroxyethylthio)phenyl]ethane (C18H22O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(3′-hydroxypropylthio)phenyl]ethane (C20H26O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(6′-hydroxyhexylthio)phenyl]ethane (C26H38O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(10′-hydroxydecylthio)phenyl]ethane (C34H54O2S2), 1,2-bis[4-(11′-hydroxyundecylthio)phenyl]ethane (C36H58O2S2) have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. These thiodiols can be used for synthesis of thermoplastic nonsegmented polyurethanes. Experimental 2θ peaks positions, relative peak intensities, values of d and Miller indices as well as unit cell parameters are reported.

A nonlinear optical material, 1-benzoyl-3-(4-benzyl)thiourea (C15H14N2OS), has been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Experimental values of 2θ corrected for systematic errors, relative peak intensities, values of d, and the Miller indices of 82 observed reflections with 2θ up to 80° are reported. The powder diffraction data have been evaluated, and the figures-of-merit are reported. The least-squares refined unit cell parameters are a=22.0243(6)Å, b=10.9795(7)Å, c=13.0322(8)Å, β=116.88(2)°, V=2810.8(9)Å3, Z=8, Dx=1.278 g/cm3, space group Pn.

Three isotopic orthovanadates MTh2 (VO4)3 with M = K, Rb, Cs have been syndiesized by solid state reaction. Single crystals of K Th2 (VO4)3 and Rb Th2 (VO4)3 were obtained. These compounds are isotypic with the corresponding orthophosphates: monoclinic, space group C2/c, Z = 4. Unit-cell parameters for die diree compounds were determined. Powder diffraction data for each phase are reported.

Release 2003 of the Powder Diffraction File (PDF) contains ∼280 000 unique entries organized in a series of tables in a relational database format. The PDF is available in two products, PDF-4/Full File and PDF-4/Organics, which allow users to access and query over 150 million filled entry fields. An editorial database is used to generate the commercial products that contain tables of experimental details and statistical evaluation criteria used by the editors to evaluate quality and determine quality marks for each entry in the PDF. This editorial database has nearly doubled the searchable entry fields. This database was mined to evaluate experimental methods in X-ray diffraction. Both experimental powder diffraction data and data calculated from predominantly single crystal X-ray structural analyses were assigned statistical quality criteria. For experimental powder data, the average delta two theta values for all d-spacings in the entry set were used. Calculated data were evaluated using R factor values as the primary quality criteria. A Quality Index, which measures the errors in refined unit cell parameters divided by the magnitude of the cell parameter, can be used to compare all types of data. Experimental variables were then analyzed versus these criteria. Variables include optic configuration, (i.e., Seeman–Bohlin, Guinier, Debye–Scherrer), use of internal and external standards, use of monochromators, wavelength divergence, wavelength selection, equipment radius, specimen transparency, and specimen absorption. This study significantly differs from prior round robin analyses in that the use of the database allows us to study very large population sets for every variable analyzed.
