The capillariid nematodes present in passeriform hosts collected in Taiwan are recorded and described. Two new species are established, Capillaria parusi sp.n. from Parus monticolus insperatus and Sitta europaea formosana, and C. madseni sp.n. from Corvus macrorhynchus colonorum, and their affinities are discussed. Capillaria tridens, C. longifila and C. contorta are recorded from a number of new hosts.

The physical nature of the cercarial surface has been observed by several workers to change during the penetration of the cercaria through the skin and its metamorphosis into the schistosomulum. Very little is known about the chemistry of this change. This paper reports the effects of the treatment of the surfaces of cercariae and schistosomula with various reagents as assessed by light microscopy. It was found that there were great differences in the stability of the surfaces of these parasitic forms. The schistosomular surface was stable to 0·2 m acetic acid, 5% calcium chloride and 8 m urea, whereas the cercarial surface was affected by these reagents. 8 m urea completely dissolved the cercarial surface, while it had little visible effect on that of the schistosomulum. This dissolution of the cercarial surface could be prevented by including small quantities of sodium or calcium chloride in the 8 m urea solution. A method has been developed to isolate pure preparations of cercarial and schistosomular surfaces. Hypotheses about the chemical changes in the surface during metamorphosis should be amenable to investigation using this method.

A hypothesis to explain some features of Ascaris flexures is given. It is based on the co-operation of muscle cells in domains which may assume two states. In one state the muscles are long and it is mainly the non-contractile parallel elements that are in tension. The other state has short muscles exerting tension mainly in the contractile elements. The living animal changes shape if new domains are formed or if domain boundaries move. The hypothesis is applied to laboratory experiments and observations.

In the uninfected hepatopancreas of L. truncatula 7·0–11·0% of the dry weight is lipid. Of the total lipid 60% is neutral lipid and 40% is phospholipid. Free fatty acid is the major neutral lipid component; triglycerides, diglycerides, monoglycerides, sterols and esterified sterols are also present. The phospholipids identified were phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, lyso-phosphatidyl choline and sphingomyelin. The fatty acids were analysed by gas chromatography. The major fatty acid is C16 (palmitic) and 60% of the total fatty acids are saturated.

In the hepatopancreas of L. truncatula infected with the rediae of F. hepatica, but with the rediae removed, 5·4–9·4% of the dry weight is lipid. Of this total lipid 73% is neutral lipid and 27% is phospholipid. All the fractions of neutral lipid, except the fatty acids are smaller than in the uninfected hepatopancreas. The fatty acids show an increase of 38%. The same phospholipids identified in the uninfected hepatopancreas are present, but all the fractions show a decrease in amount with the exception of the phosphatidyl choline fraction, which is present in approximately equal amounts in both the uninfected and the infected hepatopancreas. The major fatty acid is palmitic acid.

1. A description of four new species of gregarine found in Blaberus discoidalis and Blaberus boliviensis is given. The species have been called Protomagalhaensia granulosae, Gregarina cubensis (from B. discoidalis), Protomagalhaensia blaberae and Gregarina princisi (from B. boliviensis).

2. A discussion of the taxonomic status of the species in relation to one another and to Gregarina blattarum and Protomagalhaensia serpentula is given, and further work to elucidate this problem is suggested.

The eggs of D. coeliaca have been cultured successfully and the free-swimming larva has been studied for the first time. The eggs have an incubation period which for monogeneans is exceptionally long (4–5 months at 10 °C). Apart from maintenance at a low temperature no other special conditions such as high hydrostatic pressure or washing to remove host body fluid are necessary for development. It is not necessary for the eggs to come into contact with host body fluid before development can begin.

The oncomiracidium of D. coeliaca has no eyes, a well-developed pair of anterior median gland cells and a pair of hamuli. The oncomiracidium of C. kroyeri is similar to that of D. coeliaca except for the presence of two pairs of conspicuous pigmented eyes, poorly developed anterior median gland cells, the presence of an extra pair of gland cells at the posterior end of the body and the absence of hamuli.

A comparison of the larval features of D. coeliaca and C. kroyeri has confirmed that these parasites belong to quite distinct species.

Few workers have studied the amino acid requirement of larval Digenea in vivo. Cheng (1963) conducted a study of three species of parasites, each from a different host, and suggested that both free and bound host amino acids act as food sources. His assumptions are based on the disappearance of free amino acids from the sera of infected molluscs and the qualitative similarities between parasite and host with respect to both free and bound amino acids. Negus (1968), working on Turritella communis infected with the sporocysts of Cercaria doricha, described an almost identical qualitative composition of both the free amino acid pools and the hydrolysates of host gonad and parasite tissue. He was of the opinion that this was not coincidental. Considerable quantitative similarities between the free amino acids were also evident. Read, Rothman & Simmons (1963), in discussing cestode metabolism and membrane transport, proposed that it is the molar ratios of amino acids in the host which are important to the parasite and that the amino acid requirement may be more subtle than a simple need for certain components. Indeed, they suggest that this may form one basis for physiological host specificity.

A typical postparturient rise of parasite egg output occurred in a group of lactating ewes. At parturition these animals carried few inhibited fourth-stage larvae and the rise was associated with a net increase in parasite populations, which did not occur in non-lactating ewes. Lactating ewes whose established parasite populations were effectively removed just prior to parturition showed a similar rise derived entirely from infection acquired during lactation, which was of much greater magnitude than that seen in similarly treated non-lactating animals. Circumstantial evidence of increased fecundity of T. colubriformis females in lactating ewes was also obtained.

It was concluded that the postparturient rise of egg output may derive from an increase in adult parasite populations by an increased rate of establishment of newly ingested infective larvae which develop to the adult stage without inhibition, as well as by the resumption of development of previously inhibited fourth-stage larvae. In addition, both newly acquired and established adult female parasites may show increased fecundity.

Ewes whose lambs were removed at birth or after a period of lactation showed a rapid fall in faecal egg counts associated with rejection of part of their existing worm burden and a pronounced increase in resistance to new infection.

All of the differences observed between lactating and non-lactating ewes in the behaviour of their parasite populations were found to be qualitatively the same as those that have been frequently reported in susceptible and resistant non-reproductive sheep. The hypothesis is suggested, therefore, that the postparturient rise derives from a pronounced but temporary relaxation of immunological control of gastro-intestinal nematode infection associated with the endocrine status of the lactating ewe.

Gametocytes of a polychromophilid parasite indistinguishable from those of P. melanipherus are commonly found in the blood of the bent-winged bat Miniopterus schreibersii in New South Wales. There is a seasonal variation in infection rate, this being lowest in April (0%) and highest in August (up to 82·7%), and in density of parasitaemia.

This variation is the reverse to that found in the same species of bat in the northern hemisphere.

The reproductive biology of M. schreibersii in New South Wales is considered in relation to the seasonal variation in infection rate.

The main vectors of the parasitism are likely to be the nycteribiid flies, Penicillidia oceanica and Nycteribia parilis n.ssp.

Transaminase activity in homogenates of larval Digenea indicates that alanine aspartic acid, glutamic acid and their α-keto acid analogues could form an important link between carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism. As few amino acids participate in transamination it is doubtful whether this process plays a major role in protein synthesis.

A method is described for producing unisexual infections of N. brasiliensis in rats; this method was used primarily to obtain populations of virgin adult females. Experiments were carried out in which male worms were introduced to virgin females in the rat small intestine. The worms were recovered after periods varying from 30 min to 22 h and the females were examined for fertile egg production or other evidence of insemination.

In some experiments a few females were inseminated within 30 min of being mixed with males, but for reliable results a period of over 1 h was necessary. Sperm were first deposited along the ventral wall of the vagina and there was evidence that a single insemination could fill the vagina. After 4·5 h the majority of females had been inseminated and this period was long enough for sperm to reach the seminal receptacle in one female. A minority of females had a few fertile eggs in the uterus by 5·5 h, and fertile eggs were being passed by 6·0 h after the introduction of males.

Small numbers of males were introduced to an excess of virgin females in order to obtain information on the sexual capacity of males. These experiments indicated that males could, on average, fertilize one female every 2 h during the first 15–20 h. This potential was shown to be greatly in excess of the minimum requirements for maintaining the maximum fertile egg output of females in normal infections.

An intestinal trematode of shrews previously identified as Opisthioglyphe locellus Kossack, 1910, by Macy & Moore (1958) in Oregon is identified as Neoglyphe soricis (= Opisthioglyphe soricis) originally described from Sorex araneus L., in Poland by Pojmańska (1956). N. soricis found in Sorex cinereus, near Anchorage, Alaska, is a new host and new locality record. N. soricis, the only species of Neoglyphe known from North America, is compared with its Eurasian counterpart and closely related species. Evidence supporting the retention of the genus Neoglyphe originally proposed as a subgenus by Shaldybin (1953), and raised to generic rank by Yamaguti (1958), and invalidated by Zarnowski (1960), is presented.
