1 I would like to acknowledge the tremendous help provided by Maria Pia Malvezzi in obtaining permessi for me to visit many of the palaces of Rome (and also Florence) and by Susan Russell in organizing a research visit to Frascati.
2 The impact of Rome on Thomas Coke and Holkham Hall was the subject of my British School at Rome lecture. A short paper is due to be published in the conference papers arising from Collecting & the Princely Apartment, Abbey of Ottobeuren, Germany, 13–17 July 2007, convened by Dr Andrea Galdy, The Institute of Historical Research, University of London.
3 I should also acknowledge the tremendous value to me of residence with fellow scholars in so many different fields and the resource presented by the School's library, which brings together so much material from different aspects of the experience of Rome through history.
