In the first two chapters, especially, I draw on ideas developed in a forthcoming book on Greek psychology and ethics, Personality in Greek Epic, Tragedy, and Philosophy: The Self in Dialogue (Oxford, 1996). These ideas are presented here in general terms, and located in the context of scholarly debate on the relevant questions. See also Ch. VI, text to nn. 6-12.
