This article focuses on the need for technological aid for agrammatics, and presents a system designed to meet this need. The field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) explores ways to allow people with speech or language disabilities to communicate. The use of computers and natural language processing techniques offers a range of new possibilities in this direction. Yet AAC addresses speech deficits mainly, not linguistic disabilities. A model of aided AAC interfaces with a place for natural language processing is presented. The PVI system, described in this contribution, makes use of such advanced techniques. It has been developed at Thomson-CSF for the use of children with cerebral palsy. It presents a customizable interface helping the disabled to compose sequences of icons displayed on a computer screen. A semantic parser, using lexical semantics information, is used to determine the best case assignments for predicative icons in the sequence. It maximizes a global value, the ‘semantic harmony’ of the sequence. The resulting conceptual graph is fed to a natural language generation module which uses Tree Adjoining Grammars (TAG) to generate French sentences. Evaluation by users demonstrates the system's strengths and limitations, and shows the ways for future developments.

This paper describes DialogueView, a tool for annotating dialogues with utterance boundaries, speech repairs, speech act tags, and hierarchical discourse blocks. The tool provides three views of a dialogue: WordView, which shows the transcribed words time-aligned with the audio signal; UtteranceView, which shows the dialogue line-by-line as if it were a script for a movie; and BlockView, which shows an outline of the dialogue. The different views provide different abstractions of what is occurring in the dialogue. Abstraction helps users focus on what is important for different annotation tasks. For example, for annotating speech repairs, utterance boundaries, and overlapping and abandoned utterances, the tool provides the exact timing information. For coding speech act tags and hierarchical discourse structure, a broader context is created by hiding such low-level details, which can still be accessed if needed. We find that the different abstractions allow users to annotate dialogues more quickly without sacrificing accuracy. The tool can be configured to meet the requirements of a variety of annotation schemes.

This paper presents a scheme that allows one to relax the all-or-none nature of two-level constraints in two-level morphology in a controlled manner, so that word forms with violations of some of the two-level constraints can be analyzed and ranked. The problem has been motivated by a recent phenomenon in Turkish with imported words that violate a fundamental assumption of Turkish that pronunciation and orthography have almost a one-to-one correspondence, and by a problem in Basque words with differing amounts of competence errors. We present the formulation of our proposal, and provide details of implementations for both problems using the XRCE Finite State Toolkit.

Artificial languages for person-machine communication seldom display the most characteristic properties of natural languages, such as the use of anaphoric or other referring expressions, or ellipsis. This paper argues that useful use could be made of such devices in artificial languages, and proposes a mechanism for the resolution of ellipsis and anaphora in them using finite state transduction techniques. This yields an interpretation system displaying many desirable properties: easily implementable, efficient, incremental and reversible.

Linguists in general, and computational linguists in particular, do well to employ finite state devices wherever possible. They are theoretically appealing because they are computationally weak and best understood from a mathematical point of view. They are computationally appealing because they make for simple, elegant, and highly efficient implementations. In this paper, I hope I have shown how they can be applied to a problem… which seems initially to require heavier machinery.

This paper discusses the issue of human variation in natural language referring expression generation. We introduce a model of content selection that takes speaker-dependent information into account to produce descriptions that closely resemble those produced by each individual, as seen in a number of reference corpora. Results show that our speaker-dependent referring expression generation model outperforms alternatives that do not take human variation into account, or which do so less extensively, and suggest that the use of machine-learning methods may be an ideal approach to mimic complex referential behaviour.

Word embeddings have become a standard resource in the toolset of any Natural Language Processing practitioner. While monolingual word embeddings encode information about words in the context of a particular language, cross-lingual embeddings define a multilingual space where word embeddings from two or more languages are integrated together. Current state-of-the-art approaches learn these embeddings by aligning two disjoint monolingual vector spaces through an orthogonal transformation which preserves the structure of the monolingual counterparts. In this work, we propose to apply an additional transformation after this initial alignment step, which aims to bring the vector representations of a given word and its translations closer to their average. Since this additional transformation is non-orthogonal, it also affects the structure of the monolingual spaces. We show that our approach both improves the integration of the monolingual spaces and the quality of the monolingual spaces themselves. Furthermore, because our transformation can be applied to an arbitrary number of languages, we are able to effectively obtain a truly multilingual space. The resulting (monolingual and multilingual) spaces show consistent gains over the current state-of-the-art in standard intrinsic tasks, namely dictionary induction and word similarity, as well as in extrinsic tasks such as cross-lingual hypernym discovery and cross-lingual natural language inference.

Most information systems that deal with natural language texts do not tolerate much deviation from their idealized and simplified model of language. Spoken dialog is notoriously ungrammatical, however. Because the MAREDI project focuses in particular on the automatic analysis of scripted dialogs, we needed to develop a robust capacity to analyze transcribed spoken language. This paper summarizes the current state of our work. It presents the main elements of our approach, which is based on exploiting surface markers as the best route to the semantics of the conversation modelled. We highlight the foundations of our particular conversational model, and give an overview of the MAREDI system. We then discuss its three key modules, a connectionist network to recognise speech acts, a robust syntactic analyzer, and a semantic analyzer.

Lapata and Brew (Computational Linguistics, vol. 30, 2004, pp. 295–313) (hereafter LB04) obtain from untagged texts a statistical prior model that is able to generate class preferences for ambiguous Lewin (English Verb Classes and Alternations: A Preliminary Investigation, 1993, University of Chicago Press) verbs (hereafter Levin). They also show that their informative priors, incorporated into a Naive Bayes classifier deduced from hand-tagged data (HTD), can aid in verb class disambiguation. We re-analyse LB04's prior model and show that a single factor (the joint probability of class and frame) determines the predominant class for a particular verb in a particular frame. This means that the prior model cannot be sensitive to fine-grained lexical distinctions between different individual verbs falling in the same class.

We replicate LB04's supervised disambiguation experiments on large-scale data, using deep parsers rather than the shallow parser of LB04. In addition, we introduce a method for training our classifier without using HTD. This relies on knowledge of Levin class memberships to move information from unambiguous to ambiguous instances of each class. We regard this system as unsupervised because it does not rely on human annotation of individual verb instances. Although our unsupervised verb class disambiguator does not match the performance of the ones that make use of HTD, it consistently outperforms the random baseline model. Our experiments also demonstrate that the informative priors derived from untagged texts help improve the performance of the classifier trained on untagged data.

A competitive and cost-effective public procurement (PP) process is essential for the effective use of public resources. In this work, we explore whether descriptions of procurement calls can be used to predict their outcomes. In particular, we focus on predicting four well-known economic metrics: (i) the number of offers, (ii) whether only a single offer is received, (iii) whether a foreign firm is awarded the contract, and (iv) whether the contract price exceeds the expected price. We extract the European Union’s multilingual PP notices, covering 22 different languages. We investigate fine-tuning multilingual transformer models and propose two approaches: (1) multilayer perceptron (MLP) models with transformer embeddings for each business sector in which the training data are filtered based on the procurement category and (2) a k-nearest neighbor (KNN)-based approach fine-tuned using triplet networks. The fine-tuned MBERT model outperforms all other models in predicting calls with a single offer and foreign contract awards, whereas our MLP-based filtering approach yields state-of-the-art results in predicting contracts in which the contract price exceeds the expected price. Furthermore, our KNN-based approach outperforms all the baselines in all tasks and our other proposed models in predicting the number of offers. Moreover, we investigate cross-lingual and multilingual training for our tasks and observe that multilingual training improves prediction accuracy in all our tasks. Overall, our experiments suggest that notice descriptions play an important role in the outcomes of PP calls.

Automatic paraphrase detection is the task of measuring the semantic overlap between two given texts. A major hurdle in the development and evaluation of paraphrase detection approaches, particularly for South Asian languages like Urdu, is the inadequacy of standard evaluation resources. The very few available paraphrased corpora for these languages are manually created. As a result, they are constrained to smaller sizes and are not very feasible to evaluate mainstream data-driven and deep neural networks (DNNs)-based approaches. Consequently, there is a need to develop semi- or fully automated corpus generation approaches for the resource-scarce languages. There is currently no semi- or fully automatically generated sentence-level Urdu paraphrase corpus. Moreover, no study is available to localize and compare approaches for Urdu paraphrase detection that focus on various mainstream deep neural architectures and pretrained language models.

This research study addresses this problem by presenting a semi-automatic pipeline for generating paraphrased corpora for Urdu. It also presents a corpus that is generated using the proposed approach. This corpus contains 3147 semi-automatically extracted Urdu sentence pairs that are manually tagged as paraphrased (854) and non-paraphrased (2293). Finally, this paper proposes two novel approaches based on DNNs for the task of paraphrase detection in Urdu text. These are Word Embeddings n-gram Overlap (henceforth called WENGO), and a modified approach, Deep Text Reuse and Paraphrase Plagiarism Detection (henceforth called D-TRAPPD). Both of these approaches have been evaluated on two related tasks: (i) paraphrase detection, and (ii) text reuse and plagiarism detection. The results from these evaluations revealed that D-TRAPPD ($F_1 = 96.80$ for paraphrase detection and $F_1 = 88.90$ for text reuse and plagiarism detection) outperformed WENGO ($F_1 = 81.64$ for paraphrase detection and $F_1 = 61.19$ for text reuse and plagiarism detection) as well as other state-of-the-art approaches for these two tasks. The corpus, models, and our implementations have been made available as free to download for the research community.

Although Korean language education is experiencing rapid growth in recent years and several studies have investigated automated writing evaluation (AWE) systems, AWE for Korean L2 writing still remains unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to develop and validate a state-of-the-art neural model AWE system which can be widely used for Korean language teaching and learning. Based on a Korean learner corpus, the proposed AWE is developed using natural language processing techniques such as part-of-speech tagging, syntactic parsing, and statistical language modeling to engineer linguistic features and a pre-trained neural language model. This study attempted to determine how neural network models use different linguistic features to improve AWE performance. Experimental results of the proposed AWE tool showed that the neural AWE system achieves high reliability for unseen test data from the corpus, which implies metrics used in the AWE system can help differentiate different proficiency levels and predict holistic scores. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the proposed linguistic features–syntactic complexity, quantitative complexity, and fluency–offer benefits that complement neural automated writing evaluation.

An important problem in knowledge discovery from text is the automatic extraction of semantic relations. This paper addresses the automatic classification of the semantic relations expressed by English genitives. A learning model is introduced based on the statistical analysis of the distribution of genitives' semantic relations in a corpus. The semantic and contextual features of the genitive's noun phrase constituents play a key role in the identification of the semantic relation. The algorithm was trained and tested on a corpus of approximately 20,000 sentences and achieved an f-measure of 79.80 per cent for of-genitives, far better than the 40.60 per cent obtained using a Decision Trees algorithm, the 50.55 per cent obtained using a Naive Bayes algorithm, or the 72.13 per cent obtained using a Support Vector Machines algorithm on the same corpus using the same features. The results were similar for s-genitives: 78.45 per cent using Semantic Scattering, 47.00 per cent using Decision Trees, 43.70 per cent using Naive Bayes, and 70.32 per cent using a Support Vector Machines algorithm. The results demonstrate the importance of word sense disambiguation and semantic generalization/specialization for this task. They also demonstrate that different patterns (in our case the two types of genitive constructions) encode different semantic information and should be treated differently in the sense that different models should be built for different patterns.

In spite of the wide availability of more powerful (context free, mildly context sensitive, and even Turing-equivalent) formalisms, the bulk of the applied work on language and sublanguage modeling, especially for the purposes of recognition and topic search, is still performed by various finite state methods. In fact, the use of such methods in research labs as well as in applied work actually increased in the past five years. To bring together those developing and using extended finite state methods to text analysis, speech/OCR language modeling, and related CL and NLP tasks with those in AI and CS interested in analyzing and possibly extending the domain of finite state algorithms, a workshop was held in August 1996 in Budapest as part of the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI'96).

Disorder named entity recognition (DNER) is a fundamental task of biomedical natural language processing, which has attracted plenty of attention. This task consists in extracting named entities of disorders such as diseases, symptoms, and pathological functions from unstructured text. The European Clinical Case Corpus (E3C) is a freely available multilingual corpus (English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Basque) of semantically annotated clinical case texts. The entities of type disorder in the clinical cases are annotated at both mention and concept level. At mention -level, the annotation identifies the entity text spans, for example, abdominal pain. At concept level, the entity text spans are associated with their concept identifiers in Unified Medical Language System, for example, C0000737. This corpus can be exploited as a benchmark for training and assessing information extraction systems. Within the context of the present work, multiple experiments have been conducted in order to test the appropriateness of the mention-level annotation of the E3C corpus for training DNER models. In these experiments, traditional machine learning models like conditional random fields and more recent multilingual pre-trained models based on deep learning were compared with standard baselines. With regard to the multilingual pre-trained models, they were fine-tuned (i) on each language of the corpus to test per-language performance, (ii) on all languages to test multilingual learning, and (iii) on all languages except the target language to test cross-lingual transfer learning. Results show the appropriateness of the E3C corpus for training a system capable of mining disorder entities from clinical case texts. Researchers can use these results as the baselines for this corpus to compare their own models. The implemented models have been made available through the European Language Grid platform for quick and easy access.

There are well-meaning efforts to address ethics that will likely make the world a better place, but care needs to be taken to avoid repeating mistakes of the past. In particular, ACL has recently introduced a new process where there are special reviews of some papers for ethics. We would be more comfortable with the new ethics process if there were more checks and balances, due process and transparency. Otherwise, there is a risk that the process could intimidate authors in ways that are not that dissimilar from the ways that academics were intimidated during the Cold War on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Recent years have seen a growing number of publications that analyse Natural Language Understanding (NLU) datasets for superficial cues, whether they undermine the complexity of the tasks underlying those datasets and how they impact those models that are optimised and evaluated on this data. This structured survey provides an overview of the evolving research area by categorising reported weaknesses in models and datasets and the methods proposed to reveal and alleviate those weaknesses for the English language. We summarise and discuss the findings and conclude with a set of recommendations for possible future research directions. We hope that it will be a useful resource for researchers who propose new datasets to assess the suitability and quality of their data to evaluate various phenomena of interest, as well as those who propose novel NLU approaches, to further understand the implications of their improvements with respect to their model’s acquired capabilities.
