Two species, Cliostomum coppinsii Fryday & Kantvilas sp. nov. from Scotland, and Cliostomum praepallidum (Müll. Arg.) Kantvilas & Fryday comb. nov. from Tasmania and southern South America, are described, illustrated and discussed. Both occupy an unusual position within the genus on account of their atypically wide, ± polarilocular ascospores. Patellaria banksiae Müll. Arg., based on a collection from Australia, is lectotypified and reduced to synonymy with Cliostomum griffithii (Sm.) Coppins.

A new lichen species, Waynea giraltiae van den Boom, is described from southern Portugal and Spain. It is characterized by a very fine tomentum on the squamulose thallus, fusiform, 3-septate ascospores, and strongly curved filiform conidia. It is the first species of the genus containing argopsin. The new species is compared with related Waynea species. Waynea cretica is recorded as new to the Iberian Peninsula.

Elixia cretica T. Sprib. & Lumbsch is described as a new species from the mountains of western Crete. The second member of the previously monotypic genus and only the third member of the family Elixiaceae, it is distinguished by its surficial thallus, larger ascospores and corticolous habit. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on a sequence of mitochondrial small subunit DNA confirms the position of the new species. We also report E. flexella from New Hampshire (USA) as new to eastern North America.

Well-developed ascospores of Rinodina flavosoralifera have been observed for the first time. The ascospores are described and illustrated and new data on the chemistry and distribution of this species are provided. New chorological data on Rinodina disjuncta are also included.

Cladonia rei and Cladonia subulata are morphologically similar, but chemically different cup lichens of dry grasslands and nutrient-poor ruderal habitats. Recently, C. rei has been synonymized with C. subulata on the basis of combined morphological and chemical investigations. However, doubts remained due to a molecular divergent North American sample of C. rei compared to European C. subulata. To clarify the situation, using molecular methods, we analysed chemically different European samples of C. rei and C. subulata, as well as other morphologically or chemically similar Cladonia species. Molecular data show that European and North American samples of C. rei belong to the same clade, which is closely related to C. fimbriata and followed by a subclade with C. coniocraea and C. ochrochlora. The subclade of C. subulata appears to be distinct from C. rei. In concordance with molecular data, the presence of homosekikaic acid is the determining chemical feature for C. rei. In addition, C. humilis and C. innominata proved to be molecularly distinct species.

The Thelotremataceae are represented on Aldabra by three species: Leucodecton compunctum, Thelotrema euphorbiae, and Thelotrema hniatukii. The latter is described here as new. It is closely related to T. euphorbiae and know so far only from Aldabra.

Pertusaria aceroae and Pertusaria calderae from the Canary Islands are described as new to science. A description of each species is given together with notes on their chemistry, distribution, ecology and taxonomy. Related lichen taxa are discussed.

The new lichenicolous Llimoniella phaeophysciae, known from Italy, Spain and the USA (Arizona) on Phaeophyscia, resembles Geltingia associata in the subcylindrical asci with uniseriate, shortly ellipsoid ascospores, but is distinguished by several important characters. Gelatinopsis acarosporicola, G. heppiae, Geltingia groenlandiae and Psorotichia terricola (syn. nov. Gelatinopsis leptogii) are considered to be congeneric with L. phaeophysciae, although some of them have elongate clavate and not subcylindrical asci and they are consequently combined in Llimoniella. These five species are distinguished from Llimoniella s.str. by a different excipular and epihymenial pigmentation not reacting with KOH and are treated as the informal L. phaeophysciae group. The new L. placopsidis is described from Placopsis in New Zealand. More complex pigmentation patterns are documented for L. pyrenulae and L. ramalinae. A revised key to the species of Llimoniella is presented. Gelatinopsis ericetorum and G. roccellae are combined in Rhymbocarpus. A redescription of Geltingia associata is given.

Recent revisions of the graphidaceous lichens of India have brought to light several new taxa in the family Graphidaceae. In the present study seven species of Acanthothecis are recognized from India. Three new species, viz. Acanthothecis archeri, A. celata, and A. coccinea, are described and A. nivalis, a species described earlier from the Andaman Islands, has now been recorded from the mainland. A revised key to the seven Acanthothecis species so far known from India is also presented.

The new species Parmeliella borbonica is described. It belongs in a small group of species, which, unlike all other Parmeliella species except those of the Parmeliella mariana group, have thalline squamulose margins of the apothecia, and are thus superficially reminiscent of Pannaria. The group is mainly Indo-pacific. A key to the species is given. Parmeliella borbonica appears to be an addition to the many remarkable endemic members of the Pannariaceae found in Réunion which has retained old Gondwana elements, as its lowland forests have not been destroyed as much as those in the neighbouring region. The very rare Coccocarpia imbricascens Nyl. was found as new to the island, and the rare endemic Pannaria multifida P. M. Jørg close to its type locality.

The new genus Labrocarpon is introduced for the species Melaspilea canariensis based on the presence of excipular periphysoids. In addition, Buelliella protoparmeliopsis is described from Chile, the twelfth species of the genus. Notes on the two new taxa and related species are provided.

The new species Leptogium sphaerosporum from Langtang in Nepal is described. It is closely related to L. pedicellatum, but differs in being more delicate with phyllidia and having spheroid spores. It is most probably a local species of the lower montane forests. An emendation to the world key of hairy Leptogium species is presented.

Two new species of Syncesia are described, which differ from all other species of the genus by having more than 3-septate ascospores. Syncesia afromontana is characterized by a byssoid thallus and 7-septate ascospores, and is known only from the type locality in the Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda where it might be endemic. Syncesia madagascariensis is characterized by a crustose thallus and 5-septate ascospores, and is known only from the type locality in a montane forest in central Madagascar.

The new species, Maronina orientalis Kantvilas & Papong, with two varieties, var. orientalis and var. corallifera Kantvilas & Papong, is described, based on material from Thailand. The genus Maronina, now containing four species, is reassessed. It is characterized by having a crustose thallus, lecanorine apothecia and polysporous asci of a modified Lecanora-type.

In the present paper four etomentose species of Leptogium are recorded from Maharashtra, western India. Three species, viz. Leptogium patwardhanii Dube & Makhija sp. nov., Leptogium subazureum Dube & Makhija sp. nov., and Leptogium verrucosum Dube & Makhija sp. nov., are described as new to science and one species, Leptogium propaguliferum Vain., is recorded for the first time from India. A revised key to the non-hairy species of Leptogium from India is provided.

Chapsa rubropruinosa Messuti & Codesal collected in Argentina is described as new to science. The species is characterized by a thin thallus, apothecia with a pigmented disc, and transversely septate, hyaline, non-amyloid to faintly amyloid ascospores with thin cell walls. Chapsa minor is recorded for the first time from South America. The new combination Topeliopsis lomatiae (Messuti, Lumbsch & Vězda) Messuti & Mangold is proposed.

Leiorreuma subpatellulum is described as new to science. The new species has a completely carbonized exciple, an inspersed hymenium and brown ascospores with 6–12 locules, tapering at one end.

Psoroma microlepideum is reduced to a synonym of P. fuegiense. The species differs in several characters from P. pholidotum, and it overlaps geographically with the latter, which is neotypified here. These two species are now placed in the new southern South American genus Psorophorus, differing from Psoroma s. str. in being corticolous, having adpressed squamules on a distinct, dark prothallus, lacking melanins, having a thin cortical layer and a simpler IKI+ apical ascus structure. Two other widespread, panaustral species are the only ones in Pannariacae containing usnic acid. The primarily fertile species has been known as Psoroma pholidotoides, but the type contains pannarin rather than usnic acid, and the correct name for the primarily fertile taxon with usnic acid is Psoroma contextum Stirt. This is together with P. soccatum R. Br. ex Crombie is now placed in the new genus Xanthopsoroma. In addition to usnic acid, both species have a series of distinct terpenoids, some in major quantities. Like Psorophorus, they are corticolous, but have long, more or less nodulose, apical perispore extensions, and an IKI+ apical ascus tube structure which is longer and thinner, including a diffuse tholus reaction, and often an external apical sheet. Phylogenetically, these two genera are shown to be monophyletic and different from Psoroma s. str. based on an analysis of ITS and nrLSU rDNA. This analysis also shows that among the ten species focused on in this study, nine species (two in Xanthopsoroma, two in Psorophorus and five in Psoroma s. str.) are monophyletic, based on two to six sequences of each species. Psoroma hypnorum remains polyphyletic. All names now belonging in Psorophorus and Xanthopsoroma are typified.

A new lichen species, Pyrenula darjeelingensis (Pyrenulaceae), is described from the Eastern Himalayan region of India. It is characterized by having 5-septate to submuriform ascospores with papillate apices and the terminal lumina mostly not separated from the exospore by an endospore layer. Six additional species of Pyrenula are reported for the first time from India: P. acutalis R. C. Harris, P. dermatodes (Borrer) Schaer., P. mastophoroides (Nyl.) Zahlbr., P. mucosa (Vain.) R. C. Harris, P. subelliptica (Tuck.) R. C. Harris and P. thelemorpha Tuck.

Lecanographa uniseptata is described as new to science. It is characterized by having small rounded to lirellate ascomata, and 1-septate ascospores. The species is known from tropical Africa (Gabon) and tropical America (Guatemala).
