Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) requires high compression of fusion fuel to densities approaching 1000 times liquid density of deuterium-tritium (D–T) at central temperatures in excess of 5 keV. The goal of ICF is to achieve high gain (of the order of 100 or greater) in the laboratory. To meet this objective with minimum driver energy, a number of central issues must be addressed. Research in ICF with laser drivers has shown the importance of using short wavelength (λ < 0.5 µm). To achieve conditions for high gain at driver energies of a few megajoules or less, high intensities (>1014W/cm2) are required. The directdrive approach to ICF is more energy efficient than indirect drive if the stringent drive symmetry and hydrodynamic stability requirements can be met by a suitable laser irradiation scheme and target design. Experiments carried out at 351 nm on the 2-kJ, 24-beam OMEGA laser system at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester, and future experiments to be performed on a 30-kJ upgrade of this laser, can resolve the remaining physics issues for direct drive: (1) energy coupling and transport scaling; (2) irradiation-uniformity requirements for high gain; (3) hydrodynamic stability constraints; and (4) hot-spot and main-fuel-layer physics. We review progress made on achieving uniform drive conditions with the OMEGA system and present results for direct-drive cryogenic-fuel-capsule and CD-shell, “surrogate” cryogenic-capsule implosion experiments that illustrate the constraints imposed by hydrodynamic instabilities and drive uniformity on the design of high-performance direct-drive targets. Target designs have been identified that will explore the ignition-scaling regime using the OMEGA Upgrade. Experiments on the OMEGA Upgrade will signal whether or not there is a high probability of achieving modest to high gain using direct drive on an upgrade of the NOVA facility.

This paper presents a model to study the two prominent coexisting instabilities, stimulated Raman (SRS), and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in the presence of background axial magnetic field. In the context of laser-produced plasmas, this model is very useful in the situations where a self-generated axial magnetic field is present as well as where an external axial magnetic field is applied. Due to the interplay between both the scattering processes, the behavior of one scattering process is greatly modified in the presence of another coexisting scattering process. The impact of this coexisting phenomenon and axial magnetic field on the back reflectivity of scattered beams has been explored. It has been demonstrated that the back reflectivity gets modified significantly due to the coexistence of both the scattering processes (SRS and SBS) as well as due to the axial magnetic field. Results are also compared with the three-wave interaction case (isolated SRS or SBS case).

In this paper, the robustness of the dynamic instability mitigation mechanism is first examined, and then the instability mitigation phenomenon is demonstrated in a deuterium–tritium (DT) fuel target implosion by wobbling heavy-ion beams (HIBs). The results presented here show that the mechanism of the dynamic instability mitigation is rather robust against changes in the phase, the amplitude and the wavelength of the wobbling perturbation applied. In general instability would emerge from the perturbation of the physical quantity. Normally the perturbation phase is unknown, so that the instability growth rate is discussed. However, if the perturbation phase is known, the instability growth can be controlled by a superposition of perturbations imposed actively: if the perturbation is induced by, for example, a driving beam axis oscillation or wobbling, the perturbation phase could be controlled and the instability growth is mitigated by the superposition of the growing perturbations. In this paper, we realize the superposition of the perturbation by the wobbling HIBs’ illumination onto a DT fuel target in heavy-ion inertial fusion (HIF). Our numerical fluid implosion simulations present that the implosion non-uniformity is mitigated successfully by the wobbling HIBs illumination in HIF.

Charge transfer of 4.3 MeV/u chlorine ions passing through a discharge plasma target is used as a probe to determine the plasma density and the ratio of impurities inside the plasma column. Charge-state distributions of 2 MeV/u chlorine ions passing through the plasma are then measured and compared to corresponding measurements in the cold gas. Stopping power measurements are also performed in both cases.

A model for plasma channel formation by a laser pre-pulse in a low Z gas (Hydrogen) embedded with high Z atoms (Ar) is developed. The laser of intensity I ≅ 1014 W/cm2 ionizes hydrogen atoms fully whereas Ar atoms are ionized only singly. After the first pulse is gone, plasma expands on the time scale of a nanosecond to produce a hydrogen plasma channel with minimum density on the axis. A second intense short pulse laser of intensity I ≥ 1016 W/cm2 gets focused. It tunnel ionizes the remaining Ar. The Ar acquires Ar8+ charge state after loosing 8 ions and acquires Ne like configuration and could emit X-rays.

Using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the properties of a proton beam generated from a thin erbium hydride target irradiated by a 25 fs laser pulse of intensity ranging from 1020 to 1021 W/cm2 are investigated and compared with the features of a proton beam produced from a hydrocarbon (CH) target. It is shown that in case of using the hydride target the mean proton energy and the number of high-energy (>10 MeV) protons as well as the peak proton pulse intensity can be higher by a factor ~10 than the ones obtained from the CH target.

It is shown that scattering of the laser-accelerated carbon ions in the material of the protective membrane of a fast ignition, indirect compression target without cone can result in a significant increase in the hot spot radius and will complicate significantly or even prevent the effective shaping of the bombarded region of the compressed fuel.

Long-scale preformed plasmas are generated inside the cone by the pre-pulse of the heating laser in the cone-guided fast ignition scheme and it is found that coupling efficiency from the heating laser to fast electrons especially suitable for core heating is drastically reduced by the preformed plasmas. To mitigate this serious problem, an extremely thin film is suggested to cover the entrance of the cone. This method, however, introduces long rarefied plasmas around the entrance of the cone and the main pulse must propagate through these plasmas. Therefore, fast electron characteristics produced by the main pulse could be affected, and effects of long rarefied plasmas on fast electron generation are investigated. It is found that the electron beam intensity becomes larger than that without the rarefied plasma, but the energy coupling rate from the heating laser to the core decreases due to lack of appropriate electrons for core heating. To achieve less than 10% degradation of the core electron temperature, the thin film must be expanded by irradiation of the pre-pulse so that the length and the density of rarefied plasmas become less than 500 µm and one-tenth of the critical density. A thickness of the thin film can be determined by these criteria and the intensity of the pre-pulse.

The energy balance of the p-11B fusion scenario with compensation of the transfer of kinetic energy of protons and alpha particles to the gas medium by the electric field is considered. It is shown that such scenario cannot provide the use of p-11B fusion reaction for power production due to the very low ratio of the energy release of the fusion reaction to the energy necessary for compensation. The upper boundary of this ratio is about $2\times {10}^{-3}$.

The advent of high-energy short-pulse laser beams poses new problems related to radiation protection. The radiation generated in experiments using multipetawatt laser systems leads to prompt doses and potentially to the activation of the materials within the interaction chamber and the experimental hall. Despite many new PW laser facilities are nowadays entering into operation, this question has received little attention until now. In this paper, we evaluate the radiological effects induced by the operation of a high-power laser facility. Two working regimes are considered related to the production of hard X-rays and energetic protons. The methodology is general and may be applied for the design of experiments with any high-power laser systems.

A high-current accelerator for pumping of the 200-L excimer laser is developed, providing electron energy of 550 keV, a diode current of 320 kA, and an e-beam current of 250 kA. The high-voltage part of the accelerator consists of two linear transformers with a stored energy of 98 kJ. To reduce the influence of the self-magnetic field on e-beam formation, the vacuum diode is divided into six separate magnetically isolated diodes.

In a collisionless shock, there are no binary collisions to isotropize the flow. It is therefore reasonable to ask to which extent the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) jump conditions apply. Following up on recent works which found a significant departure from MHD in the case of parallel collisionless shocks, we here present a model allowing to compute the density jump for collisionless shocks. Because the departure from MHD eventually stems from a sustained downstream anisotropy that the Vlasov equation alone cannot specify, we hypothesize a kinetic history for the plasma, as it crosses the shock front. For simplicity, we deal with non-relativistic pair plasmas. We treat the cases of parallel and perpendicular shocks. Non-MHD behavior is more pronounced for the parallel case where, according to MHD, the field should not affect the shock at all.

In recent years experimental results about the pulsation of reflectivity or 3ω/2 harmonics from laser-irradiated plasma with a period of 10–20 ps initiated a reconsideration of a broad field of phenomena of laser-plasma interaction. We present here numerical results from a very general hydrodynamic computation showing that the pulsation is due to a standing-wave-produced density ripple in the widespread plasma corona causing these after 2 ps at Laue-Bragg reflection at very low density, followed by a hydrodynamic relaxation of the ripple. This cycle has a turnaround time of about 6–10 ps and immediately explains the observation of pulsation. The suppression of pulsation and the achievement of smooth direct drive is then understood by a washing-out process of the ripples when using the random-phase plate (RPP) or broadband irradiation, or by just preventing the buildup of the ripple at the induced spatial incoherence (ISI), where coherence of the laser field is 1 or 2 ps only.

This paper presents numerical simulations to study the heating of a solid target under a proton beam pulse interaction. The target is heated by the proton beam pulse with particle energy Eb, intensity N and focal radius rb of transverse Gaussian distribution, with a fixed pulse time 10 ps. The dynamics of target and beam ions are described by a classical hydrodynamic model and the target electrons are described by the quantum hydrodynamic model. Numerical simulations are carried out by employing the two dimensional flux-corrected transport methods. The target is heated to 0.5−5 eV, therefore, warm dense matter is created in the heated target region on a picosecond time scale.

Some results of an experimental study of the hard X rays emitted from a 15-kV, 3-kJ plasma focus operated in argon are reported. The temporal evolution of the hard X rays detected by a plastic scintillator-photomultiplier detector and the voltage across the focus tube measured by a resistive voltage divider are simultaneously recorded on a two-channel digitizing oscilloscope. Metal absorbers of various thicknesses are used to provide some indications of the energies of the X rays. When the time delay of the detector system with respect to the anode voltage is taken into account, the hard X rays are observed to be emitted about 15 ns before the peak of the anode voltage and last for about 100 ns. There are two periods of emission, the X rays emitted in the first period being more intense, more energetic, and more directional than the X rays emitted in the second period. The X rays are attributed to the bombardment of the anode by energetic electrons generated in the pinch and the disruption phases of the focus.

Models and experiments were developed to study femtosecond laser ablation of silicon using 800 nm, 40 fs pulses with fluences ranging from 0.5 to 35 J/cm2. At low fluences, ablation was found to occur due to bubble formation and splashing within the melt layer. At higher fluences, it was found that the ablation depth exceeded the melt layer depth due to shockwave ablation. The variation in ion flux and ion velocity was also studied both experimentally and theoretically. It was found that the variation in ion flux is mainly dependent on the variation in the average charge state, with only a small variation in the total number of ions above $\sim \!\!1.5\; \,{\rm J/c}{{\rm m}^2}$. Comparisons between the theoretical and experimental ion flux showed that higher charge state ions received greater portion of the laser energy compared with lower charge state ions.

A paraxial theory of relativistic self-focusing of a Gaussian laser beam in plasmas, when the nonlinear part of the effective dielectric constant is arbitrarily large, is presented. The plasma is taken to be homogeneous without any density fluctuations being necessary. The approach of Akhmanov et al. based on the WKB and paraxial ray approximations has been followed. It is seen that the saturating nature of nonlinearity leads to two values of critical power of the beam (Pcrl and Pcr2) for self-focusing. When the power of the beam P lies between the two critical values (i.e., Pcr1 < P < Pcr2), the medium behaves as an oscillatory waveguide; the beam first converges and then diverges, converges again, and so on. For P > Pcr2 the beam first diverges, then converges, then diverges, and so on. Because the relativistic mechanism is instantaneous, the theory is applicable to the understanding of selffocusing of laser pulses also.

A new diagnostic technique has been developed for the time-resolved spectroscopic measurement of anode plasma in a single-current-feed magnetically-insulated iondiode. From the measurement of Stark broadening of Hα line of hydrogen, we have estimated the electron density to be 4 ∼ 5 × 1016 cm−3 using the pulse-power generator, ‘ETIGO-I’, typically operated with diode voltage, 550 and 600 kV, diode current, 36 and 53 kA, and pulse width ∼ 90 ns (FWHM of diode current). Assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium, we have estimated the electron temperature to be l·9∼2·4eV from the measurement of light intensity ratio of successive ionization stages of carbon. The expansion velocity of the anode plasma has been found to be 4∼4·5cm/μS.

Cyclotron resonance effects on electron acceleration by two lasers of different wavelengths in the presence of a magnetic field have been investigated. Beating of two high-intensity lasers of different wavelengths, propagating in opposite direction to each other, can produce a high accelerating field gradient. An electron can be accelerated by such accelerating field to a sufficiently higher energy level. Additional energy gain has been observed due to the applied magnetic field. The magnetic field turns down the electrons to the acceleration region to extract more energy from the accelerating field produced by the beating of the lasers. At resonance, when the Larmor frequency is comparable to the laser frequency, this effect becomes more pronounced. Using some reasonable experimental parameters, we estimate the electron energy gain for this mechanism.

We describe the properties of the exploding foil neon-like germanium soft X-ray lasers having wavelengths of 19–28 nm and gain length product of more than 10. The measured X-ray intensity of lasing lines from an exploding foil target has been explained with the results of the plasma hydrodynamic code from the viewpoint of suitable condition of electron density and temperature for creating population inversion.
