Impairments in intentional—but not unintentional—inhibition have been found in schizophrenia, and are thought to contribute to the presence of psychotic symptoms. However, it was previously unknown whether this intentional cognitive control impairment extends to intentional resistance to interference—another form of cognitive control. The current study resolved this issue through administering two cognitive control measures: one with a high intentional resistance to interference demand and the other with a high unintentional inhibition demand, to schizophrenia (n = 61) and healthy control (n = 34) participants. Consistent with previous findings, schizophrenia participants’ performance on the measures with a high unintentional inhibition demand was intact; however, they were impaired on the task with high intentional resistance to interference demands compared with controls. This latter finding suggests that intentional cognitive control impairments previously found in schizophrenia are not specific to inhibition, but instead are more general, including both processes requiring inhibition (as consistently reported in the literature) and resistance to interference (as found in the current study). Objectives: Recent evidence indicates that some left brain-damaged (LBD) patients have difficulties to use familiar tools because of the inability to reason about physical object properties. A fundamental issue is to understand the residual capacity of those LBD patients in tool selection. Methods: Three LBD patients with tool use disorders, three right brain-damaged (RBD) patients, and six matched healthy controls performed a novel tool selection task, consisting in extracting a target out from a box by selecting the relevant tool among eight, four, or two tools. Three criteria were manipulated to make relevant and irrelevant tools (size, rigidity, shape). Results: LBD patients selected a greater number of irrelevant tools and had more difficulties to solve the task compared to RBD patients and controls. All participants committed more errors for selecting relevant tools based on rigidity and shape than size. In some LBD patients, the difficulties persisted even in the 2-Choice condition. Conclusions: Our findings confirm that tool use disorders result from impaired technical reasoning, leading patients to meet difficulties in selecting tools based on their physical properties. We also go further by showing that these difficulties can decrease as the choice is reduced, at least for some properties, opening new avenues for rehabilitation programs. (JINS, 2018, 24, 524–529)

There are dramatic changes in the electroencephalogram of the inactivated hemisphere in the intracarotid sodium amobarbital test. One of the more profound behavioral changes during this procedure is left hemispatial neglect accompanying right hemisphere inactivation. The present study was designed to ascertain whether there was a clear relationship between the degree of hemispheric inactivation (as measured by the electroencephalogram) and the degree of left hemispatial neglect during this procedure. Sixty-nine participants undergoing right hemisphere intracarotid sodium amobarbital testing were presented with a random letter cancellation test at various points during the procedure. Neglect was quantified as significant, moderate, minimal, or none, based on how many target letters the patients missed. The simultaneous electroencephalogram from each of these testing points was spectrally analyzed and topographic maps were generated. The degree of neglect was then compared with the comparable topographic map. It was found that as the amobarbital-induced right hemispheric dysfunction regressed, the degree of neglect lessened in a systematic fashion, as did the profound electroencephalographic changes induced by the drug. Thus, there is a clear relation between the degree of hemispheric inactivation induced by the amobarbital and the degree of left hemispatial neglect. This relationship held regardless of side of hemispheric language dominance or epileptic focus. These results replicate previous findings that right hemisphere inactivation during the intracarotid sodium amobarbital test results in left hemispatial neglect. They extend these findings by clearly showing that neglect changes in a quantitative fashion (rather than being an all-or-none phenomenon) and further, show that there is a clear relationship between the severity of neglect and the degree of hemispheric dysfunction. The spatial allocation of attention influences estimates of stimulus magnitude, including line length and the line bisection task has been used to assess the asymmetrical allocation of spatial attention. The purpose of this study is to learn if normal subjects' allocation of attention changes as a function of the trunk–head centered spatial position of the line stimuli. Normal subjects were asked to bisect lines placed in five different head–trunk centered special positions (central, right up–distal, left up–distal, right down–proximal, left down–proximal). When compared with the central condition, deviations in the right or left lateral conditions were only significant in the down–proximal conditions, such that the bisection bias significantly shifted direction to the left of the objective midline in left hemispace and to the right of the objective midline in right hemispace, suggesting that stimuli presented in lateral hemispace primarily activate the contralateral hemisphere's attentional systems. The finding that the lines presented in down–proximal lateral hemispace induce a greater spatial bias than lines in up–distal lateral space suggests that the portion of the brain's dorsal visual system, which processes stimuli in down–proximal space, influences the horizontal (right–left) spatial allocation of attention more than does the brain's ventral visual system. Objectives: Social cognitive deficits have been discussed to be endophenotypes for schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. The current study aimed to assess emotional intelligence (EI) in unaffected siblings of schizophrenia patients to investigate its potential role as endophenotype for schizophrenia. Methods: EI was measured in 56 schizophrenia patients, 57 unaffected siblings, and 127 healthy control subjects by using the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). In addition, non-social cognition was assessed with the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS). Linear mixed models with compound symmetric correlation structure were used for of the three groups with respect to EI and non-social cognition. Results: Schizophrenia patients showed significantly lower overall EI and performed significantly worse in three out of four MSCEIT branches compared to unaffected siblings and control subjects, whereas the two latter groups had comparable EI levels. Similar performance patterns (patients<unaffected siblings=control subjects) were found with respect to non-social cognition. Solely in the “Tower of London” test, siblings achieved significantly lower task scores compared to control subjects. Conclusions: Based on our results, EI as measured with the MSCEIT does not seem to represent a marker of risk for schizophrenia. Further investigations should concentrate on other EI measures to reassess this finding. (JINS, 2017, 23, 577–583)

This study examined implicit semantic and rhyming cues on perception of auditory stimuli among nonaphasic participants who suffered a lesion of the right cerebral hemisphere and auditory neglect of sound perceived by the left ear. Because language represents an elaborate processing of auditory stimuli and the language centers were intact among these patients, it was hypothesized that interactive verbal stimuli presented in a dichotic manner would attenuate neglect. The selected participants were administered an experimental dichotic listening test composed of six types of word pairs: unrelated words, synonyms, antonyms, categorically related words, compound words, and rhyming words. Presentation of word pairs that were semantically related resulted in a dramatic reduction of auditory neglect. Dichotic presentations of rhyming words exacerbated auditory neglect. These findings suggest that the perception of auditory information is strongly affected by the specific content conveyed by the auditory system. Language centers will process a degraded stimulus that contains salient language content. A degraded auditory stimulus is neglected if it is devoid of content that activates the language centers or other cognitive systems. In general, these findings suggest that auditory neglect involves a complex interaction of intact and impaired cerebral processing centers with content that is selectively processed by these centers (JINS, 2006, 12, 649–656.)

To identify neuropsychological and psychosocial factors predictive of amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) among a group of 94 nondemented older adults, we employed a novel nonlinear multivariate classification statistical method called Optimal Data Analysis (ODA) in a dataset collected annually for 3 years. Performance on measures of memory and visuomotor processing speed or symptoms of depression in year 1 predicted aMCI status by year 2. Performance on a measure of learning at year 1 predicted aMCI status at year 3. No other measures significantly predicted incidence of aMCI at years 2 and 3. Results support the utility of multiple neuropsychological and psychosocial measures in the diagnosis of aMCI, and the present model may serve as a testable hypothesis for prospective investigations of the development of aMCI.
