The work in this paper is directed at the question: What differentiable flows on [0, 1] [1] are conjugates of linear fractional flows on [0, 1]?

We study the problem of extending a state on an abelian $C^{\ast }$-subalgebra to a tracial state on the ambient $C^{\ast }$-algebra. We propose an approach that is well suited to the case of regular inclusions, in which there is a large supply of normalizers of the subalgebra. Conditional expectations onto the subalgebra give natural extensions of a state to the ambient $C^{\ast }$-algebra; we prove that these extensions are tracial states if and only if certain invariance properties of both the state and conditional expectations are satisfied. In the example of a groupoid $C^{\ast }$-algebra, these invariance properties correspond to invariance of associated measures on the unit space under the action of bisections. Using our framework, we are able to completely describe the tracial state space of a Cuntz–Krieger graph algebra. Along the way we introduce certain operations called graph tightenings, which both streamline our description and provide connections to related finiteness questions in graph $C^{\ast }$-algebras. Our investigation has close connections with the so-called unique state extension property and its variants.

If K is a field and L an extension field, α ∈ L is said to be algebraic over K if it satisfies an equation with coefficients in K. If α does not satisfy any such on, it is called transcendental over K.

A new class of functions with a unique identification minor is introduced: functions determined by content and singletons. Relationships between this class and other known classes of functions with a unique identification minor are investigated. Some properties of functions determined by content and singletons are established, especially concerning invariance groups and similarity.

In this paper, the questions about bitopological spaces proposed by S. Lal are solved and one of his counterexamples rectified.

In a previous communication [5] the author has dealt with the congruence properties of some restricted partition functions. The general category of such functions may be denoted.

This paper is a study of nonsingular rings with essential socles. These rings were first investigated by Goldie [5] who studied the Artinian case and showed that an indecomposable nonsingular generalized uniserial ring is isomorphic to a full blocked triangular matrix ring over a sfield. The structure of nonsingular rings in which every ideal generated by a primitive idempotent is uniform was determined for the Artinian case by Gordon [6] and Colby and Rutter [2], and for the semiprimary case by Zaks [12]. Nonsingular rings with essential socles and finite identities were characterized by Gordon [7] and the author [10]. All these results were obtained by representing the rings in question as matrix rings. In this paper a matrix representation of arbitrary nonsingular rings with essential socles is found (section 2). The above results are special cases of this representation. A general method for representing rings as matrices is developed in section 1.

Let S be an ideal of the free inverse monoid on a set X, and let ℬ denote the Banach algebra l1(S). It is shown that the following statements are equivalent: ℬ is *-primitive; ℬ is prime; X is infinite. A similar result holds if ℬ is replaced by ℂ[S], the complex semigroup algebra of S.

Let (M,g) be a non-compact and complete Riemannian manifold with minimal horospheres and infinite injectivity radius. In this paper we prove that bounded functions on (M,g) satisfying the mean-value property are constant. We thus extend a result of Ranjan and Shah [‘Harmonic manifolds with minimal horospheres’, J. Geom. Anal.12(4) (2002), 683–694] where they proved a similar result for bounded harmonic functions on harmonic manifolds with minimal horospheres.

The connection between Clifford analysis and the Weyl functional calculus for a d-tuple of bounded selfadjoint operators is used to prove a geometric condition due to J. Bazer and D. H. Y. Yen for a point to be in the support of the Weyl functional calculus for a pair of hermitian matrices. Examples are exhibited in which the support has gaps.

This paper gives theorems which encompass known characterizations of many of the generalized compactness properties.

A Radon-Nikodým theorem for Banach valued polymeasures is proved.

The purpose of this paper is to provide examples and explore properties of a wide variety of zero square (left) near rings. Among the main results are complete classifications of (i) finite Abelian groups which are the additive group of a zero square near-ring and (ii) finite non-Abelian groups which support 3-nilpotent distributive zero square near-rings.

We introduce a class of polynomials which induce a permutation on the set of polynomials in one variable of degree less than m over a finite field. We call then Am-permutation polynomials. We also give three criteria to characterize such polynomials.

Let ${\mathcal{H}}=\mathbb{C}^{n}\otimes {\mathcal{E}}$ be the tensor product of a Euclidean space $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and a separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal{E}}$. Our main object is the operator $G=I_{n}\otimes S+A\otimes I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$, where $S$ is a normal operator in ${\mathcal{E}}$, $A$ is an $n\times n$ matrix, and $I_{n},I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$ are the unit operators in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and ${\mathcal{E}}$, respectively. Numerous differential operators with constant matrix coefficients are examples of operator $G$. In the present paper we show that $G$ is similar to an operator $M=I_{n}\otimes S+\hat{D}\times I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$ where $\hat{D}$ is a block matrix, each block of which has a unique eigenvalue. We also obtain a bound for the condition number. That bound enables us to establish norm estimates for functions of $G$, nonregular on the closed convex hull $\operatorname{co}(G)$ of the spectrum of $G$. The functions $G^{-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\;(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}>0)$ and $(\ln G)^{-1}$ are examples of such functions. In addition, in the appropriate situations we improve the previously published estimates for the resolvent and functions of $G$ regular on $\operatorname{co}(G)$. Since differential operators with variable coefficients often can be considered as perturbations of operators with constant coefficients, the results mentioned above give us estimates for functions and bounds for the spectra of differential operators with variable coefficients.

Let G/G' be finitely generated and let G = B1 x A1 = B2 x A2 = … = Bi x Ai = … with each Bi isomorphic to a fixed group B which obeys the maximal condition for normal subgroups. Then the Ai represent only finitely many isomorphism classes. We give an example with B infinite cyclic, G/G' free abelian of infinite (countable) rank and such that G is decomposed as above with no two Ai isomorphic.

Let $A_{{\it\alpha}}^{p}$ be the weighted Bergman space of the unit ball in ${\mathcal{C}}^{n}$, $n\geq 2$. Recently, Miao studied products of two Toeplitz operators defined on $A_{{\it\alpha}}^{p}$. He proved a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for boundedness of such products in terms of the Berezin transform. We modify the Berezin transform and improve his sufficient condition for products of Toeplitz operators. We also investigate products of two Hankel operators defined on $A_{{\it\alpha}}^{p}$, and products of the Hankel operator and the Toeplitz operator. In particular, in both cases, we prove sufficient conditions for boundedness of the products.

The Bishop property (♗), introduced recently by K. P. Hart, T. Kochanek and the first-named author, was motivated by Pełczyński’s classical work on weakly compact operators on $C(K)$-spaces. This property asserts that certain chains of functions in said spaces, with respect to a particular partial ordering, must be countable. There are two versions of (♗): one applies to linear operators on $C(K)$-spaces and the other to the compact Hausdorff spaces themselves. We answer two questions that arose after (♗) was first introduced. We show that if $\mathscr{D}$ is a class of compact spaces that is preserved when taking closed subspaces and Hausdorff quotients, and which contains no nonmetrizable linearly ordered space, then every member of $\mathscr{D}$ has (♗). Examples of such classes include all $K$ for which $C(K)$ is Lindelöf in the topology of pointwise convergence (for instance, all Corson compact spaces) and the class of Gruenhage compact spaces. We also show that the set of operators on a $C(K)$-space satisfying (♗) does not form a right ideal in $\mathscr{B}(C(K))$. Some results regarding local connectedness are also presented.

Let $X=GC$ be a group, where C is a cyclic group and G is either a generalized quaternion group or a dihedral group such that $C\cap G=1$. In this paper, X is characterized and, moreover, a complete classification for $X$ is given, provided that G is a generalized quaternion group and C is core-free.
