CHARLOTTE E. ROSEN is a doctoral candidate in History and Presidential Fellow at Northwestern University. Her research concerns the history of prisons, prison overcrowding, and prisoner resistance in late twentieth-century Pennsylvania. JEROEN TOUWEN is Associate Professor in Economic and Social History at Leiden University.
