The growing amount of data produced by simulations and observations of space physics processes encourages the use of methods rooted in machine learning for data analysis and physical discovery. We apply a clustering method based on self-organizing maps to fully kinetic simulations of plasmoid instability, with the aim of assessing their suitability as a reliable analysis tool for both simulated and observed data. We obtain clusters that map well, a posteriori, to our knowledge of the process; the clusters clearly identify the inflow region, the inner plasmoid region, the separatrices and regions associated with plasmoid merging. Self-organizing map-specific analysis tools, such as feature maps and the unified distance matrix, provide us with valuable insights into both the physics at work and specific spatial regions of interest. The method appears as a promising option for the analysis of data, both from simulations and from observations, and could also potentially be used to trigger the switch to different simulation models or resolution in coupled codes for space simulations.

Lane formation dynamics of driven three-dimensional pair-ion plasmas (PIP) is investigated. Extensive Langevin dynamics simulation is performed to study the influence of an external electric field on the behaviour of the PIP system. In our model, one half of the particles are pushed into the field direction by an external force $\boldsymbol {F}_{A}$ while the other half are pulled into the opposite direction by an external force $\boldsymbol {F}_{B}$. We show that if $\boldsymbol {F}_{A}$ and $\boldsymbol {F}_{B}$ are parallel, the system undergoes a non-equilibrium phase transition from a disordered state to a lane formation state parallel to the field direction with increasing field strength. The lanes are formed by the same kind of particles moving collectively with the field. The lane order parameter has been implemented to detect phase transition. Further, we show the lane formation in the presence of a time-varying external electric field. In particular, the effect of parallel forces are investigated. Unlike the previously reported two-dimensional case (Sarma, et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 27, 2020, p. 012106; Baruah, et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 87, issue 2, 2021, p. 905870202), for the time-varying electric field case, spontaneous formation and the breaking of lanes are not observed for all values of applied frequencies; however, the orderness varies and spontaneous formation and breaking of lanes is observed for values close to a critical frequency $\omega _c$. Further, some aspects of the lane formation dynamics of a PIP system are also studied in the presence of an external magnetic field, which reveals that the presence of an external magnetic field accelerates the lane formation process and introduces a drift of the lanes in a direction perpendicular to both electric and magnetic fields.

In Part 1 of the companion paper, we have investigated lane formation dynamics of driven three-dimensional (3-D) pair-ion plasmas (PIP) in the presence of parallel external forcing using extensive Langevin dynamics (LD) simulation. In continuation of the work, in this Part 2, we investigate lane formation dynamics in the presence of non-parallel external forcing, and the effect of both constant and time varying forces are studied. In our model, positively charged PIP particles are pushed into the field direction by an external force $\boldsymbol{F}_{A} = E_A\cos \omega _At$ while the negatively charged PIP particles are pulled by an external force $\boldsymbol{F}_{B} = E_B\cos \omega _Bt$ in a direction perpendicular to the external force $\boldsymbol{F}_{A}$. We show that in the case of non-parallel forces, the lanes are observed with an orientation (characterised by angle of inclination $\theta$) tilted in the direction of the force difference vector ($\boldsymbol{F}_{A} - \boldsymbol{F}_{B}$). The instantaneous lane order parameter, order parameter with gradient of angle of inclination ($\phi (\theta )$) and distribution function of $\Delta \theta$ have been implemented to characterise the phase transition. A spontaneous formation and breaking of lanes are observed when under the influence of time-varying forces. The effect is further investigated for three different situations: first, when $\omega _A \neq 0$ and $\omega _B = 0$; second, when $\omega _A = \omega _B \neq 0$; and third, for $\omega _A \neq \omega _B \neq 0$. Our study reveals that for the first case, a periodic oscillation of angle of inclination is observed. If oscillating forces of the same frequency are applied, the oscillation in angle of inclination disappears, and spontaneous formation and breaking of lanes is observed. However, in the presence of forces with different frequencies, flipping of lane inclination between the positive and negative domain of $\theta$ is observed. Further, some aspects of the lane formation dynamics of a PIP system is also studied in the presence of an external magnetic field where the lane formation dynamics is found to be accelerated.

With the support of hybrid-kinetic simulations and analytic theory, we describe the nonlinear behaviour of long-wavelength non-propagating (NP) modes and fast magnetosonic waves in high-$\beta$ collisionless plasmas, with particular attention to their excitation of and reaction to kinetic micro-instabilities. The perpendicularly pressure balanced polarization of NP modes produces an excess of perpendicular pressure over parallel pressure in regions where the plasma $\beta$ is increased. For mode amplitudes $|\delta B/B_0| \gtrsim 0.3$, this excess excites the mirror instability. Particle scattering off these micro-scale mirrors frustrates the nonlinear saturation of transit-time damping, ensuring that large-amplitude NP modes continue their decay to small amplitudes. At asymptotically large wavelengths, we predict that the mirror-induced scattering will be large enough to interrupt transit-time damping entirely, isotropizing the pressure perturbations and morphing the collisionless NP mode into the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) entropy mode. In fast waves, a fluctuating pressure anisotropy drives both mirror and firehose instabilities when the wave amplitude satisfies $|\delta B/B_0| \gtrsim 2\beta ^{-1}$. The induced particle scattering leads to delayed shock formation and MHD-like wave dynamics. Taken alongside prior work on self-interrupting Alfvén waves and self-sustaining ion-acoustic waves, our results establish a foundation for new theories of electromagnetic turbulence in low-collisionality, high-$\beta$ plasmas such as the intracluster medium, radiatively inefficient accretion flows and the near-Earth solar wind.

We present a new neoclassical transport model for large aspect ratio tokamaks where the gradient scale lengths are of the size of the ion poloidal gyroradius. Previous work on neoclassical transport across transport barriers assumed large density and potential gradients but a small temperature gradient, or neglected the gradient of the mean parallel flow. Using large aspect ratio and low collisionality expansions, we relax these restrictive assumptions. We define a new set of variables based on conserved quantities, which simplifies the drift kinetic equation whilst keeping strong gradients, and derive equations describing the transport of particles, parallel momentum and energy by ions in the banana regime. The poloidally varying parts of density and electric potential are included. Studying contributions from both passing and trapped particles, we show that the resulting transport is dominated by trapped particles. We find that a non-zero neoclassical particle flux requires parallel momentum input which could be provided through interaction with turbulence or impurities. We derive upper and lower bounds for the energy flux across a transport barrier in both temperature and density and present example profiles and fluxes.

Understanding magnetised laser–plasma interactions is important for controlling magneto-inertial fusion experiments and developing magnetically assisted radiation and particle sources. For nanosecond pulses at non-relativistic intensities, interactions are dominated by coherent three-wave interactions, whose nonlinear coupling coefficients became known only recently when waves propagate at oblique angles with the magnetic field. In this paper, backscattering coupling coefficients predicted by warm-fluid theory are benchmarked using particle-in-cell simulations in one spatial dimension, and excellent agreements are found for a wide range of plasma temperatures, magnetic field strengths and laser propagation angles, when the interactions are mediated by electron-dominant hybrid waves. Systematic comparisons between theory and simulations are made possible by a rigorous protocol. On the theory side, the initial boundary value problem of linearised three-wave equations is solved, and the transient-time solutions allow the effects of growth and damping to be distinguished. On the simulation side, parameters are carefully chosen and calibration runs are performed to ensure that comparisons are well controlled. Fitting simulation data to analytical solutions yields numerical growth rates that match theory predictions within error bars. Although warm-fluid theory is found to be valid for a wide parameter range, genuine kinetic effects have also been observed.

Pellet injection is used for fuelling and controlling discharges in tokamaks, and it is foreseen in ITER. During pellet injection, a movement of the ablated material towards the low-field side (or outward major radius direction) occurs because of the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field. Due to the complexity of the theoretical models, computer codes developed to simulate the cross-field drift are computationally expensive. Here, we present a one-dimensional semi-analytical model for the radial displacement of ablated material after pellet injection, taking into account both the Alfvén and ohmic currents which shortcircuit the charge separation creating the drift. The model is suitable for rapid calculation of the radial drift displacement, and can be useful for e.g. modelling of disruption mitigation via pellet injection.

We propose a theoretical scheme for the study of the nonlinear interaction of drift-wave-like turbulence and energetic particles in stellarators. The approach is based on gyrokinetics, and features a separation of time and scales, for electromagnetic fluctuations, inspired by linear ballooning theory. Two specific moments of the gyrokinetic equation constitute the main equations of the system, which requires a full kinetic nonlinear solution. This is found iteratively, expanding in the smallness of the bounce-average radial drift frequency, and nonlinear $\boldsymbol {E}\times \boldsymbol {B}$ drift frequency, compared with the inverse time scales of the resonantly interacting energetic particles. Our analysis is therefore valid for neoclassically optimised stellators. The resummation of all iterative and perturbative nonlinear kinetic solutions is discussed in terms of Feynman diagrams. Particular emphasis is put on the role of collisionlessly undamped large-scale structures in phase space, the kinetic equivalent of zonal flows, i.e. phase-space zonal structures, and on wave-like fluctuations generated by energetic particles.

We analyse the generation of kinetic instabilities and their effect on the energization of ions in non-relativistic, oblique collisionless shocks using a 3D-3V (three spatial with three velocity components) simulation by dHybridR, a hybrid particle-in-cell code. At sufficiently high Mach number, quasi-perpendicular and oblique shocks can experience rippling of the shock surface caused by kinetic instabilities arising from free energy in the ion velocity distribution due to the combination of the incoming ion beam and the population of ions reflected at the shock front. To understand the role of the ripple on particle energization, we devise a new instability isolation method to identify the unstable modes underlying the ripple and interpret the results in terms of the governing kinetic instability. We generate velocity-space signatures using the field–particle correlation technique to look at energy transfer in phase space from the isolated instability driving the shock ripple, providing a viewpoint on the different dynamics of distinct populations of ions in phase space. Together, the field–particle correlation technique and our new instability isolation method provide a unique viewpoint on the different dynamics of distinct populations of ions in phase space and allow us to completely characterize the energetics of the collisionless shock under investigation.

We present orbit classification schemes for use as fast metrics for fusion alpha particle losses implemented in the symplectic guiding-centre code SIMPLE. Two variants respectively based on conservation of the parallel adiabatic invariant, and topology of footprints in Poincaré sections are introduced. Like an existing approach based on the Minkowski fractal dimension, those methods estimate whether a guiding-centre orbit is regular and therefore expected to be confined for infinite time in the collisionless case, or chaotic, which might lead to its loss. Compared with the existing approach, the required orbit tracing time for the novel classifiers is shorter by at least an order of magnitude. This enables massive sampling of orbits across the whole phase space to identify regular and chaotic regions for the purpose stellarator optimization. Based on conservation of the perpendicular invariant, we demonstrate how extended regular regions may act as radial barriers for orbits from the chaotic regions on the radially inboard side. We propose to use a quantified version of this property as a new metric for collisionless fusion alpha losses. As pitch-angle scattering becomes only relevant after alphas have already deposited a significant fraction of their energy, such a metric remains useful also for the case with collisions. This is illustrated by comparison with collisional loss computations. Results are presented for applications to two quasi-isodynamic configurations, a quasi-helical configuration and two quasi-axisymmetric configurations. In addition, the Hamiltonian action-angle formalism is used in quasi-axisymmetric configurations to investigate the overlap of drift-orbit resonances leading to chaos. The respective analysis is performed with the NEO-RT code originally developed for investigation of neoclassical toroidal viscous torque in tokamak plasmas.

We upgrade the three-dimensional linear stability CASTOR3D code by taking into account gyro-viscosity in the momentum equation, as well as pressure and Hall terms in Ohm's law. Making use of the drift approximation, the resulting simplified version of Ohm's law is implemented. The ion and electron diamagnetic drift effects described by these newly implemented terms are investigated for ideal and resistive, low- and medium-$n$ internal modes depending on the ratio of ion and electron pressures, and plasma resistivity. Stability studies are performed for two- and three-dimensional test equilibria. The results confirm previous findings, and provide new insights especially in the case of the three-dimensional equilibrium (e.g. reduction of the coupling of toroidal harmonics).

The impurity transport at Wendelstein 7-X during its most recent campaign is characterized and documented for a variety of different plasma scenarios. An overview of its dependence on several quantities is given, which allows identification of transport regimes and the major driver for impurity transport. Beyond this, a comparison with the impurity behavior in other fusion devices is now possible. In contrast to other stellarators, no density dependence of the impurity transport has been found. Additionally, the influence of the turbulence contribution to the overall transport is reflected in the dependence on various parameters, e.g. turbulent diffusion and density fluctuation amplitudes. With this database approach, one can now also apply scaling laws to make extrapolations about the impurity confinement in future plasma scenarios.

A two-fluid model is developed to study the stability of weakly magnetized rotating plasma columns. Previous works have shown that rotating plasma columns are prone to centrifugal flute modes. Most of these models are based on the low-frequency assumption which is valid when the instability frequency and the plasma azimuthal frequency are small compared with the ion cyclotron frequency. This assumption is challenged in many laboratory plasma devices, including weakly magnetized plasma columns. A radially global dispersion relation relaxing the low-frequency approximation and applicable in these devices is derived. The validity domain of the low-frequency approximation is discussed. In addition, the impact of the radial boundary on the linear stability is investigated and comparison with results obtained in the radially local approximation are performed.

Three-dimensional equilibrium codes are vital for stellarator design and operation, and high-accuracy equilibria are also necessary for stability studies. This paper details comparisons of two three-dimensional equilibrium codes: VMEC, which uses a steepest-descent algorithm to reach a minimum-energy plasma state, and DESC, which minimizes the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) force error in real space directly. Accuracy as measured by satisfaction of MHD force balance is presented for each code, along with the computation time. It is shown that DESC is able to achieve more accurate solutions, especially near axis. The importance of higher-accuracy equilibria is shown in DESC's better agreement of stability metrics with asymptotic formulae. DESC's global Fourier–Zernike basis also yields solutions with analytic derivatives explicitly everywhere in the plasma volume, provides improved accuracy in the radial direction versus conventional finite differences and allows for exponential convergence. Further, DESC can compute a solution with the same accuracy as VMEC in order-of-magnitude less time.

Global electromagnetic turbulence is simulated in stellarator geometry using the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code EUTERPE. The evolution of the turbulent electromagnetic field and the plasma profiles is considered at different values of the plasma beta and for different magnetic configurations. It is found that turbulence is linearly driven at relatively high toroidal mode numbers. In the nonlinear regime, lower toroidal mode numbers, including zonal flows, are excited resulting in a quench of the linear instability drive. The turbulent heat flux is outward and leads to the nonlinear relaxation of the plasma temperature profile. The particle flux is inward for the parameters considered. The effect of the parallel perturbation of the magnetic field on the stellarator turbulence is addressed.

We summarize recent attempts to unravel the role of plasma kinetic effects in radiation mediated shocks. Such shocks form in all strong stellar explosions and are responsible for the early electromagnetic emission released from these events. A key issue that has been overlooked in all previous works is the nature of the coupling between the charged leptons, that mediate the radiation force, and the ions, which are the dominant carriers of the shock energy. Our preliminary investigation indicates that in the case of relativistic shocks, as well as Newtonian shocks in multi-ion plasma, this coupling is driven by either, transverse magnetic fields of a sufficiently magnetized upstream medium, or plasma microturbulence if strong enough magnetic fields are absent. We discuss the implications for the shock breakout signal, as well as abundance evolution and kilonova emission in binary neutron star mergers.

A new perturbation and continuation method is presented for computing and analysing stellarator equilibria. The method is formally derived from a series expansion about the equilibrium condition $\boldsymbol {F} \equiv \boldsymbol {J}\times \boldsymbol {B} - \boldsymbol {\nabla } p = 0$, and an efficient algorithm for computing solutions to second- and third-order perturbations is developed. The method has been implemented in the DESC stellarator equilibrium code, using automatic differentiation to compute the required derivatives. Examples are shown demonstrating its use for computing complicated equilibria, perturbing a tokamak into a stellarator and performing parameter scans in pressure, rotational transform and boundary shape in a fraction of the time required for a full solution.

The oscillating relativistic electrons in the accelerating/focusing wakefields of plasma accelerators emit electromagnetic radiation known as betatron radiation (BR). The proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration has been demonstrated in the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) at CERN; however, its accompanying radiation emission is less explored compared with those in the laser- and electron beam-driven plasma accelerators. In this paper, a detailed simulation study of BR in the AWAKE is presented. Considering the new set-up of the AWAKE Run 2 (2021–), the radiation emission from both the witness electron beam and the seeding electron beam is investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. The influence of radial size mismatch and misaligned off-axis injection on the witness beam dynamics, as well as the spectral features of the relevant BR are studied. These non-ideal electron injections are likely to occur in experiment. The proton self-modulation stage is also investigated with a close look at the seeding electron beam dynamics and its BR. As a footprint of the emitting particles, BR can provide valuable information about the beam dynamics. Some practical challenges to implement the betatron diagnostic in the AWAKE Run 2 experiment are also addressed.
