Abstract

Lindhard's relation between the transverse and longitudinal permittivities and the magnetic susceptibility is shown to be incorrect. The tensorial nature of the wave-vector- and frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity is emphasized. A Vlasov plasma is used as an illustrative counter-example.
