When a power module is under a continuous electrical load, a temperature effect is induced by the current load in the module configuration. The joint material therefore has long-term temperature and mechanical loadings under supplied power. A long-term temperature load can change the material and mechanical properties, including voiding, cracking, creeping and fracturing. Au/20Sn eutectic alloy, a highly temperature resistant material, is typically used for electric interconnections in high-power modules. The Au/20Sn is converted into AuSn and an Au5Sn intermetallic compound (IMC) by solid liquid inter-diffusion (SLID) bonding to form joints with high melting points. In this study, a test vehicle based on an actual power module was designed and fabricated to investigate and understand the material properties and mechanical behavior of Au/20Sn solder under a temperature load. The joint microstructure exhibited variation under different thermal treatment conditions such as temperature and load durations. The shear strength test was conducted to examine the mechanical strength of the joints under different thermal load conditions. The failure mode of the joint was further determined using fracture morphology after the shear test. Finally, the shear strength of Au/20Sn was identified to investigate the high temperature resistance of joints under different temperatures. The mechanical strengths of joints under different temperature loads are expressions of different mechanical characteristics and can be used to determine reliability at an intended high application temperature.

In the present paper, a general analytical solution is proposed for anisotropic heat conduction through truncated composite spherical shells. The solution is so important in designing the spherical vessels which are usually used to store the CNG, LNG, LPG and other petroleum condensates. Herein, it is supposed that the fiber angle of composite laminate is in range of zero to 90 degrees. Heat convection with ambient flow, an external heat radiation, and a possible internal heat generation are modeled within the heat transfer equation. The exact solution is derived using the complex finite Fourier transform method. The particular solution of transferred equation is found based on the Green’s function and Sturm-Liouville theories. Finally, an inverse integral transformation is applied to form the final analytical solution in physical space. Defining four materials differing in the value of conductivity coefficient in fiber direction, the effects of used composite material and fiber angle on temperature distribution of the spherical shell are investigated in detail.

In engineering, it is quite often to have applications of the heat transfer of conduction having domain heat generation present inside. The paper aims to present boundary element formulations for analyzing the three-dimensional heat-conduction in dissimilarly bonded anisotropic media involving quadratic volume heat sources. In this paper, the additional volume integral present in the boundary integral equation is analytically transformed to the boundary surface for the volume heat sources modeled by quadratic functions. The technique of domain-mapping is employed to treat the three-dimensional anisotropic heat conduction in multiply adjoined media with proper interfacial conditions provided. For showing our successful implementation, a few example cases are analyzed with verification of independent analyses by the finite element method.

In this paper, an idea to make the flow uniform inside the manifolds of four and six cylinder engines without changing their main geometries is presented. In general the uniform distribution of air flow among the engine cylinders is very important. Non-uniform flow in the intake manifold outlets causes inadequate feeding of the cylinders, inappropriate combustion and reduces engine volumetric efficiency. So this matter is vital for improving engine performance. A flow guide blade is added into the manifold and uniformity of the air flow is studied in different regime using transient numerical simulations. The amount of air exited from each outlet and the effect of this blade on flow uniformity is investigated. The results showed that the blade has made the flow more uniform in the manifold outlets and it was also found that in the four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines the flow uniformity is increased by 67% and 75%, respectively. In other words, as the number of engine cylinders increase, the effect of using this blade increases.

The finite element method (FEM) was used to study the elastic-plastic contact in the coating systems with interlayer. The results reveal that with the increase of interlayer thickness, the maximum shear stress of coating/interlayer and interlayer/substrate interfaces decreases. Moreover, the sharply changed shear stress between the interfaces of coating/interlayer and interlayer/substrate decreases too. There is no further decrease when interlayer thickness increase to 0.04 mm and above. With the increasing of interlayer elastic modulus, the shear stress of coating/interlayer interface decreases while the shear stress of interlayer/substrate interface increases. Meanwhile, the higher elastic modulus leads to the intensive tensile stress concentration on the interface of coating/interlayer. Hence, the interlayer with appropriate elastic modulus not only reduces the shear stress of coating/interlayer and interlayer/substrate interfaces but also decreases the tensile stress of coating/interlayer interface. The mechanical properties of coating systems were investigated with different interlayer yield strength. The effective hardness and elastic modulus increase with the increase of interlayer yield strength, which is good to protect the substrate from the deformation. In addition, higher indentation load can lead to the decrease of effective hardness and elastic modulus.

The two-phase flow pattern of a flow mixing nozzle plays an important role in jet breakup and atomization. However, the flow pattern of this nozzle and its transformation characteristics are still unclear. A diesel-air injection simulation model of a flow mixing nozzle is established. Then the two-phase flow pattern and transformation characteristics of the flow mixing nozzle is studied using a numerical simulation method. The effect of the air-diesel velocity ratio, ratio of the distance between the tube orifice and nozzle hole and the tube diameter (H/D), and the diesel inlet velocity was studied in terms of the jet breakup diameter (jet diameter at the breakup position) and jet breakup length (length of the diesel jet from the breakup position to the nozzle outlet). The results show that the jet breakup diameter decreases with the decrease in H/D or the increase in the air-diesel velocity ratio and diesel inlet velocity. The jet breakup length increases first and then decreases with the increase in H/D and air-diesel velocity ratio; the trend of the diesel inlet velocity is complicated. In addition, a change in the working conditions also causes some morphological changes that cannot be quantitatively analyzed in the diesel-air flow pattern. The transition characteristics of the flow pattern are analyzed, and it is found that the main reason for the change in the flow pattern is the change in the inertial force of the air, surface tension force, and viscous force of diesel (non-dimensional Reynolds number and Weber number describe the transition characteristics in this paper). The surface tension force of diesel decreases and the viscous force of diesel and inertial force of air increase when the air-diesel velocity ratio increases or H/D decreases. However, the effects of the diesel surface tension force and viscous force effect are much smaller than that of the air inertial force, which changes the diesel-air flow pattern from a drop pattern to a vibration jet pattern, broken jet pattern, and then a chaotic jet pattern.

In this paper, unsteady flow and heat transfer of water flow in a backward-facing step under pulsating nanofluid blowing are studied numerically. Attention is focused to examine the impact of this type of blowing and its pertinent parameters on the heat transfer performance and to detect possible non-equilibrium between the base fluid and the nanoparticles inside the flow field. To this aim, the Eulerian-Eulerian two-phase model is adopted. This approach consists of separate equation sets for the base fluid and the nanoparticles. So, it provides details of the flow field for each of the constituents, separately. Computations are undertaken for different cases and the consequences of the frequency, amplitude, and the mean velocity of the pulsating blowing as well as the type, diameter, and the volume fraction of the nanoparticles therein on the heat transfer characteristics are analyzed. It is found that in addition to thermal conductivity of the blown nanoparticles, their penetration into the water flow is an important trait that has a momentous role on the heat transfer rate. In the current Eulerian-Eulerian simulation, temperature distributions of the base fluid and the nanoparticles are similar but the corresponding velocity fields are quite distinct. This reveals a kind of non-equilibrium between the base fluid and the nanoparticles inside the flow that invalidates equilibrium approaches (e.g., the single-phase model or the two-phase mixture model) for the description of the problem.

The present analysis has been developed to investigate the heat transfer phenomenon in peristaltic flow of Carreau fluid in a curved channel with rhythmic contraction and expansion of waves along the walls (similar to blood flow in tubes). Magnetic field is imposed in radial direction. The heat transfer aspect is further studied with viscous dissipation effect. The curved channel walls are influenced by flow and thermal partial slip. In addition the flow stream comprised porous medium. The system of relevant non-linear PDEs have been reduced to ODEs by utilizing the long wavelength approximation. The striking features of flow and temperature characteristics under the involved parameters are examined by plotting graphs. The generation of fluid temperature and velocity due to viscous dissipation and gravitational efforts are recorded respectively. Moreover indicated results signify activation of velocity, temperature and heat transfer rate with Darcy number.

The linear stability boundaries of journal bearings lubricated with a non-Newtonian fluid have been investigated in this paper. Based on the Rabinowitsch fluid model, a non-Newtonian dynamic Reynolds equation for journal bearings is derived and then applied to analyze the linear dynamic characteristics of short journal bearings. Comparing with the Newtonian-lubricant case, the non-Newtonian rheology of dilatant lubricants provides a larger area of linearly stable region. However, the non-Newtonian properties of pseudo-plastic lubricants results in a reverse trend for the short journal bearing.

The problem of unsteady boundary layer flow of a nanofluid over a stretching surface is studied. Heat transfer due to melting is analyzed. Using a similarity transformation the governing coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of the model are reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and then solved numerically by a Runge-Kutta method with a shooting technique. Dual solutions are observed numerically and their characteristics are analyzed. The effects of the pertinent parameters such as the acceleration parameter, the Brownian motion parameter, the thermophoresis parameter, the Prandtl number and the Lewis number on the velocity, temperature and concentration fields are discussed. Also the effects of these parameters on the skin friction coefficient, the Nusselt number and the Sherwood number are analyzed through graphs. It is observed that the melting phenomenon has a significant effect on the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics.

This study presents a new exact-analytical solution for convective heat transfer of thermally fully-developed laminar nanofluid flows in a circular tube for the first time. In this problem, the pipe wall is exposed to a constant temperature. The solution is based on the Whittaker function and perturbation technique. In the nanofluid model, it is assumed that nanoparticles and base-fluid behave as a single-phase with average properties. In this study, the effects of Reynolds number, volume fraction of the particles, Peclet number, and particle diameter are investigated on the average heat transfer coefficient, surface mass transfer, and Nusselt number.

In this study, the thermal deformation of a machine tool structure due to the heat generated during operation was analyzed, and embedded cooling channels were applied to exchange the heat generated during the operation to achieve thermal error suppression. Then, the finite volume method was used to simulate the effect of cooling oil temperature on thermal deformation, and the effect of thermal suppression was experimentally studied using a feed system combined with a cooler to improve the positioning accuracy of the machine tool. In this study, the supply oil temperature in the structural cooling channels was found to significantly affect the position accuracy of the moving table and moving carrier. If the supply oil temperature in the cooling channels is consistent with the operational ambient temperature, the position accuracy of the moving table in the Y direction and the moving carrier in the X and Z directions has the best performance under different feed rates. From the thermal suppression experiments of the embedded cooling channels, the positioning accuracy of the feed system can be improved by approximately 25.5 % during the dynamic feeding process. Furthermore, when the hydrostatic guideway is cooled and dynamic feeding is conducted, positioning accuracy can be improved by up to 47.8 %. The machining accuracy can be improved by approximately 60 % on average by using the embedded cooling channels in this study. Therefore, thermal suppression by the cooling channels in this study can not only effectively improve the positioning accuracy but also enhance machining accuracy, proving that the method is effective for enhancing machine tool accuracy.

The present model is devoted for the steady stagnation point flow of a Williamson micropolar nanofluid with magneto-hydrodynamics and thermal radiation effects passed over a horizontal porous stretching sheet. The fluid is considered to be gray, absorbing-emitting but non-scattering medium. The Cogley-Vincent-Gilles formulation is adopted to simulate the radiation component of heat transfer. By applying similarity analysis, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations and they are solved by using the bvp4c package in MATLAB. Numerical computations are carried out for various values of the physical parameters. The effects of momentum, microrotation, temperature and nanoparticle volume fraction profiles together with the reduced skin friction coefficient, reduced Nusselt number and reduced Sherwood number of both active and passive controls on the wall mass flux are graphically presented. The present results are compared with previously obtained solutions and they are in good agreement. Results show that the skin friction is increasing functions of the Williamson parameter in both stretching and shrinking surfaces.

This work analyzes the pressure driven flow of a power law fluid in a slit microchannel of asymmetric walls with electroviscous effects. The steady state Cauchy momentum and the Poisson-Boltzmann equation are solved for the velocity and the potential distribution inside the microchannel. The Debye-Huckel approximation as applicable for low zeta potentials is not made in the present work. The unknown streaming potential is solved by casting the governing equations as an optimization problem using COMSOL Multiphysics. This proposed method is very robust and can be used for a wide variety of cases. It is found that the asymmetry of the zeta potential at the two walls plays an important role on the streaming potential developed. There is a unique zeta potential ratio at which the streaming potential exhibits a maxima for both Debye-Huckel parameter and the power law index. Shear thinning fluids exhibit a stronger dependency of the streaming potential on asymmetry of the zeta potential than shear thickening fluids. For Newtonian fluids narrow slit microchannels develop larger streaming potentials compared to wider microchannels for a given asymmetry.

Shear induced autoregulation is the natural ability of organs to maintain the local hemodynamic stresses in a stable condition in spite of altering perfusion rate. Endothelium cells are shear sensitive mechanoreceptors that are responsible for regulating the arterial wall architecture and mechanical properties in order to maintain homeostasis. This occurs by means of vasoactive mediators, which cause vasodilation or vasoconstriction. In this paper we presented a multiscale model of local flow regulation. First, a lumped parameter model of the whole cardiovascular system was implemented. Then a 3D numerical model of human common carotid artery was constructed considering fluid-structure interaction. The CCA inflow waveform obtained from the extended 0D model was applied to the 3D model as the boundary condition. After applying the Head-Up Tilt test, the local hemodynamics were disturbed. By considering the wall shear stress as the regulation criterion, then altering the arterial mechanical properties and the following vasodilation, shear forces exerted on the inner lining of the vessel were regulated and returned to the normal range. The resulting 0D/3D model can be considered as a plat-form for a more complete model containing local and systemic cardiovascular control mechanisms and patient-specific geometries which can be used for clinical purposes.

Present study explores stagnation point flow of nanofluid towards a nonlinear stretching sheet of variable thickness in the presence of electromagnetic field and convective heating. The effect of viscous dissipation and Joule heating are also taken into consideration. Novel concept of non-linear radiative heat flux is also considered. The nanofluid is inspired by Lorentz force which is instigated from the interaction of magnetic and electric fields. Using similarity transformation, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations and then solved numerically by fourth order Runge-Kutta method along with shooting technique. The velocity, temperature and nanoparticle concentration profiles are plotted and analysed corresponding to various pertinent flow parameters. Also, the skin friction and rate of heat and mass transfers at the surface are computed and explained in detail. It is observed that higher wall thickness parameter results in the reduction of velocity, temperature and nanoparticle concentration when velocity power index is less than unity and opposite effect is observed when velocity power index is greater than unity. Due to intensification of electric field, nanofluid velocity is getting retarded and thereby resulting in enhancement of fluid temperature and nanoparticle concentration.

Full-scale simulations of a (Magnetorheological) MR damper are carried out for revealing its hysteretic behaviors associated with implementation of semi-active control using the routine of computational fluid dynamics. By virtue of the structural symmetry of the MR damper, a two-dimensional configuration for finite element simulation is built up. Herschel-Bulkley model is employed to represent the property of the MR fluid, of which the control parameters and their relevances to the input current are addressed. Typical cases involving sinusoidal and irregular displacements, steady and transient currents loaded upon the MR damper are investigated. Numerical investigations reveal that the damper force has a positive correlation with input current, excitation amplitude and excitation frequency. The full-scale simulation is proved to exhibit a sound accuracy through the validation of experimental data. It provides a logical manner revealing the true performance of MR dampers under desirable operating modes in practice, and can be readily integrated with the gain design of the associated semi-actively controlled structure. This progress bypasses the technical challenge inherent in the traditional tests with low-frequency cyclic loadings due to the limitation of experimental setup. Besides, comparative study between two-dimensional and three-dimensional configuration simulations of the MR damper shows that former has a better applicability, which can be carried out on a low-cost platform.

Based upon the Shliomis ferromagnetic fluid model and the Stokes microcontinuum theory incorporating with the Christensen stochastic model, a modified Reynolds equation of centrosymmetric squeeze films has been derived in this paper. The Reynolds equation includes the combined effects of non-Newtonian rheology, magnetic fluids with applied magnetic fields, rotational inertia forces, and surface roughness. To guide the use of the derived equation, the squeeze film of rotational rough-surface circular disks lubricated with non-Newtonian magnetic fluids is illustrated. According to the results obtained, the effects of rotation inertia decrease the load capacity and the squeeze film time of smooth circular disks. By the use of non-Newtonian magnetic fluids with applied magnetic fields, the rotational circular disks predict better squeeze film performances. When the influences of circumferential roughness patterns are considered, the non-Newtonian magnetic-fluid lubricated rotational rough disks with applied magnetic fields provide further higher values of the load capacity and the squeeze film time as compared to those of the smooth case.

Convective heat transfer in a parallel plate microchannel gas flow is investigated analytically and numerically, considering the effects of viscous dissipation, pressure work, shear work, axial conduction and rarefaction. Analysis is performed with constant wall temperature and constant wall heat flux boundary conditions for both gas cooling and heating. The results presented demonstrate the significance of the combined effect of pressure work and viscous dissipation, shear work, rarefaction degree and axial conduction on microchannel convective heat transfer, in both the thermally developing and fully developed flow regions. Viscous dissipation and pressure work in a pressure-driven microchannel gas flow are of comparable magnitudes and may not be neglected from the energy equation. The shear work at the wall, which is effectively the combined effect of viscous dissipation and pressure work, needs to be included in the Nusselt number for better predictions of heat transfer.

In this study, cooling of a constant temperature cube that represents electronic components inserted inside a channel are investigated. For this purpose, primary air with constant velocity is transferred from channel input, and secondary air with impinging jet is transferred to channel upper surface which corresponds to top part of the components. The flows are in contact with the cube that has constant temperature and effects the thermal boundary layer on the cube surfaces to create a heat transfer from cube to fluid. This situation is simulated under turbulence conditions for different values of nozzle jet input velocity (Vj) and channel input velocity (Uc) using Reynolds number between 30000-90000 based on channel input velocity. For this purpose, velocity, temperature, and pressure distributions are obtained for the solution region using CFD package program. As a result, flow and thermal characteristics inside the channel are parametrically calculated based on Reynolds number, Nusselt number, and cube surface temperature.
