L'insertion des pronoms ce et çα, reléguant le SN qui occupe originellement la position sujet en position disloquée, peut engendrer une interprétation générique de ce SN sans néanmoins exercer systématiquement cet effet. Le présent article offre une explication de ce problème en faisant le départ entre les propriétés inhérentes aux pronoms ce et çα et les propriétés qui résultent de leur insertion dans un contexte propositionnel déterminé. L'examen de la gamme des articles pouvant introduire le SN générique dans une construction de dislocation au moyen de ce ou çα met en lumière une contrainte surprenante: l'article le, tout en s'accommodant d'un nom massif, s'allie difficilement à un nom comptable. Cette différence distributionnelle entre les SN génériques ‘le + N comptable’ et ‘le + N massif’ trouve son origine dans une différence entre leurs valeurs respectives: alors que celui-là opère une réduction de l'extension à une entité individuelle, celui-ci appréhende l'extension comme un ensemble.

This article considers variable /l/-deletion in the French definite articles, subject clitic pronouns and in one frequent phono-lexical context, exemplified by table ‘table’ and ronfle ‘snore’. It reports the treatment of /l/ by a sample of secondary schoolchildren from Lorraine in north-eastern France. The definite articles and subject clitics are considered on the one hand in relation to the linguistic constraints which influence /l/-deletion, and on the other to the extra-linguistic variables of age, sex and speech style. Variable /l/-deletion in the phono-lexical context referred to above is examined principally in relation to the lexical input which influences /l/-deletion. Finally, we consider whether the sociolinguistic patterns reported here are indicative of linguistic change in progress, or whether the effects observed are revelatory rather of attitudes to non-standard linguistic forms inculcated in speakers by normative French pedagogy.

In spite of the linguistic ‘dirigisme’ during the past three and a half centuries, there remains in contemporary French a number of nouns of double or doubtful gender. Non-standard usage is potentially even more prone to fluctuation and hesitation, given the relative lack of awareness in spontaneous, informal speech of official norms. The changes of gender that have occurred and the anomalies – real or perceived – that have arisen in unconventional French are attributable to a variety of processes, both morpho-syntactic and semantic in nature. Most cases can be explained in terms of one or other of these processes (e.g. apocope, ellipsis, syllepsis). However some remain mysterious, contradicting established patterns. Intra-register gender attraction may well occur, though it is likely to be unconscious. The question of zero gender and neutralization is also raised.

L'étude de la gestion des malentendus dans une situation de communication exolingue permet de suivre le développement de la compétence linguistique et communicative du locuteur non natif en langue cible et, plus particulièrement, d'observer les stratégies dont disposent les interactants pour (rè)ajuster leur discours et continuer ainsi la conversation. La mise en oeuvre de ces stratégies est fortement médiatisée par un ensemble de facteurs – externes et internes – qui constituent lc contexte interactionnel. L'analyse que nous proposons dans cet article ést elaborée à partir de malentendus produits pendant des entretiens entre locuteur natif (francophone) et locuteurs non natifs (italophones) enregistrés en France sur unc période de six mois.

Throughout the present century the nature of Anglo-Norman and its role in the history of both French and English has been misunderstood and misrepresented by the endless repetition at second hand of views that have their origin in the nineteenth–century ‘reconstructionist’ movement in French philology. Evidence readily available from original sources of many kinds shows that the French used in England between the Conquest and the end of the fourteenth century is at once a more complex and far more important phenomenon than current writing on the subject would suggest, especially as regards the history of the English language.

This paper examines the phenomenon of language obsolescence by focusing on a large sample of Breton-speakers and non-Breton-speakers within the commune of Plougastel-Daoulas, Finistere. As well as considering matters such as the ability to understand Breton, the opportunities to speak it and so forth, the study also investigates linguistic preference, inter-generational transmission and attitudes towards language planning in an attempt to determine the extent to which the speakers themselves may be considered as catalysts in the process of language death.

Avec pour point de départ le fonctionnement de la variation dans le français d'Europe, et son ancrage dans l'histoire et dans les sociétés contemporaines, cet article est organisé en deux parties: 1) une présentation bibliographique raisonnée de travaux qui, faisant ou non appel au concept de variation, décrivent des phénomènes variables du français contemporain qui se voient investis dans des associations régionales, sociales ou stylistiques; 2) une réflexion critique, qui déborde nécessairement la sociolinguistique du français, sur l'intérêt et les limites de la notion de variation pour saisir les dimensions de variabilité et d'hétérogénéité dans une langue.

Much recent work (e.g. Hansen 1994) is demonstrating that French schwa is becoming stable in many contexts where it formerly deleted freely. In this paper, I expand on Hansen's study of the new stability of schwa, extending consideration to the lexicalized conditioning of the stability as indicated in four contemporary pronouncing dictionaries of Standard French. This increasing stability also provides evidence for a reanalysis of schwa as underlying /œ/; the implications of this analysis for the distinction between lexical and post-lexical rules are briefly explored.
