Nitrogen balances from 283 conventional dairy farms situated in southern Sweden were investigated using the farm gate method. Nitrogen balances were determined for 1997 and 1998. Three N balances were calculated; for the whole farm, for crop production and for milk production. The aims of the investigation were to study if factors such as manure handling system, the amount of N obtained from mineral fertilizer per hectare and the proportion of sugar beet have an influence on the N balance. There was no significant effect of manure handling system on the N surplus per hectare or on N efficiency. The results showed that N efficiency was significantly improved by including sugar beet in the crop rotation and was negatively correlated with milk yield per hectare and fertilizer N per hectare. The N surplus per hectare was positively correlated with milk yield per hectare and fertilizer N per hectare. The comparison did not find a strong relationship between the amounts of N obtained from mineral fertilizer per hectare and supplied as manure. The latter was calculated theoretically. There was a weak, but significant, negative correlation between N from manure in 1997 and N from mineral fertilizer in 1998.

The availability of more resistance genes to Russian wheat aphid (RWA), Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) may provide additional protection from new virulent strains or biotypes of the insect. This genetic study was conducted to determine the allelic relationships of resistance genes in two Iranian wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) lines, SHZ.W.102 and SHZ.W.104 and lines PI 137739, PI 262660, PI 372129, PI 294994 and PI 243781, carrying resistance genes Dn1, Dn2, Dn4, Dn5 and Dn6 respectively. The two Iranian lines were crossed to each of the other resistant lines, and F1 and F2 seedlings were screened for RWA reaction. The resistance gene in 102 was allelic to Dn1, however, the resistance gene in 104 was different from other known genes. The resistant line 104 is an effective source of genetic resistance to RWA and the gene symbol Dn7 is proposed for its resistance gene.

Ease of removal of the husk of oats from its enclosed kernel, hullability, affects the efficiency with which oats are milled. Hullability of a range of oat varieties was examined using a mechanical dehuller from autumn-sown trials in Northern Ireland, 1996–98, and in the Republic of Ireland, 1997–98. Varieties differed greatly in hullability, the spring variety, Barra, having good hullability while the winter variety, Gerald, had poor hullability. Differences between the varieties were largely consistent from site to site and from year to year despite large differences in the amounts of grain remaining unhulled from trial to trial. Although secondary grains were easier to dehull than primary grains, differences in the structure of the grain populations did not explain variation in hullability of the varieties. This study highlights the need for an investigation of the effects of agronomic factors on hullability.

Hermetic cold storage without previous drying (wet–cold storage) was experimented for the preservation of yam pollen grains. Pollens collected from white yam D. rotundata and a wild relative, D. praehensilis, were stored at −80, −20, 5, and 15 °C in sealed packs for 2 years. Pollen samples were drawn for in vitro germination tests after 100 and 700 days, and hand pollination was conducted after 365 and 730 days in storage. Pollen germination responses were not significantly different among the two species. Though pollen maintained germination capacity at all the storage temperature regimes, there was a significant loss in the viability of pollen stored at 5 and 15 °C after 100 days of storage. After 700 days in storage, pollens stored at 5 and 15 °C had lost germination capacity while there were no significant differences in the germination of fresh pollen and pollen frozen at −80 and −20 °C. Hand pollination with pollen of D. rotundata frozen at −80 °C for 365 days gave 69·5% fruit set and 50% fruit set after 730 days in storage. From these results, the wet–freeze procedure appears promising to execute the establishment of pollen gene banks for yam breeding and for conservation of haploid gene pool of yams in base collections. A pollen storage protocol based on the procedure is recommended.

Many authors report on the effect of rice–fish culture on rice yields. Some reports show increased rice yields, others show no effect or even decreased yields. To verify the impact of rice–fish culture, data gathered over eight experiments (1995–1999) at the Co Do experimental rice–fish station, Vietnam, were analysed through multiple regressions with rice yield and different yield components as the dependent variables. We used eight independent variables: season, water depth, rice variety, rice seeding rate, and the effective stocking density (ESD) of silver barb, Nile tilapia, common carp and snakeskin gourami. Season had the biggest impact on nearly all dependent variables. Rice yields in the wet season were on average 2·42 t/ha lower as compared to the dry season. Higher water levels decreased the number of panicles/m2 and the rice yield. The rice seeding rate affected the yield component variables, but had no impact on the rice yield. Silver barb feeding decreased the number of panicles/m2 but this was compensated by an increased number of grains/panicle. Snakeskin gourami had a positive effect on panicles/m2 and, together with common carp, on sink capacity, probably through improved nutrient cycling in presence of fish and improved nutrient uptake by the rice plant. Snakeskin gourami had a negative effect on the ripening ability, whereas Nile tilapia had a positive effect. Fish did not have any impact on the rice yield. Increased water level and reduced rice arable area, the main two requirements for rice–fish culture, result in lower rice yields from rice–fish systems as compared to monoculture systems.

A diagnostic survey carried out in 1997 to obtain baseline information on the farming situation in Transkei area of South Africa, showed that agriculture in this area was characterized by low technological inputs which invariably led to low agricultural outputs. The main farming system of the majority of the farmers (98%) was based on intercropping involving maize, beans and pumpkin combined in an haphazard fashion.

Based on the above findings, two field experiments were set up in 1998 designed to bring out the best planting combinations for maize/beans and maize/pumpkin intercrops which could be introduced to the farmers. Effect of weeding on the intercrops was also investigated.

In both intercrops, intercropping adversely affected the plant heights and circumferences of the component crops. Also, the yield of the individual crop in each intercrop was depressed by intercropping compared with its sole yield. In maize/beans intercrop, the yield of maize was depressed by 15% and that of beans by 13%. However in both intercrops, productivity as measured by Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) was the highest with maize at 10000 plants/ha combined with beans at 150000 plants/ha (2·60) with weeding while the combination with the best LER (1·50) in maize/pumpkin intercrop was at 30000 plants/ha of maize combined with pumpkin at 2500 plants/ha, with weeding. However, before any final recommendation is made, the profitability of each combination has to be considered.

Weeding was found to enhance intercrop yields in maize/bean combination by 35% and by 30% in maize/pumpkin combination.

Peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth) agroecosystems for hearts-of-palm constitute a productive and sustainable land use for the humid tropics. Allometric models allow to predict biomass non-destructively at any time, and subsequently, to determine the span of growth phases, biomass and nutrient pools, and economic yields. The overall goals of this study were to obtain and validate predictive functions of above-ground dry biomass of peach palm shoots, and to relate standing biomass with heart-of-palm yields as well. Towards this purpose, peach palm shoots were harvested and separated into components (foliage, petiole and stem) in the Atlantic region of Costa Rica. Basal diameter (BD) was a more effective predictor of biomass than height to the fork between the spear leaf and the first fully expanded leaf, total height and number of leaves. Regression models explained 70–89% of the variance in component (foliage, petiole and stem) or total shoot biomass. Nonlinear regression, which independently calculates equation coefficients for biomass components and total shoot biomass, was compared with a nonlinear seemingly unrelated regression (NSUR) procedure, which simultaneously fits the component equations that predict leaf, petiole and stem in order to assure biomass additivity. Equation coefficients for NSUR fitted-regressions that also model unequal variances, were substantially different from those for individual regressions; e.g. Biomassleaf = 11·4739 BD1·8042, Residual mean square (RMS) = 69·9 for the individual equation, versus Biomassleaf = 6·841 BD2·086, RMS = 72·4 for the NSUR fitted-equation. NSUR equations had slightly less precision in estimating biomass than individual equations but consistently less bias. In separate harvests of peach palm plants within four stands ranging in age from 1·9 to 21 years, estimates of component and total above-ground shoot biomass were similar to observed values except for the youngest stand in which biomass was overestimated. In another harvest, yield of heart-of-palm per plant was linearly related to total above-ground biomass in two peach palm stands of age 5 and 9 years. The non-destructive estimation of above-ground biomass from easily measured plant dimensions will permit any-time, less expensive and reasonable precise biomass estimates in peach palm. Biomass data can be incorporated to decision support aids for nutrient management in heart-of-palm agroecosystems and serve other purposes such as for carbon sequestration calculations.

The paper seeks to compare the effectiveness of various functions as appropriate to express protein retention and lipid retention as a function of pig live weight. Linear descriptors were adequate for protein growth over the 20 to 120 kg live weight range, but not adequate when higher live weights were included. Linear descriptors were not adequate for lipid growth over any weight range. Quadratic and cubic polynomials, and the logistic function, were faulted on their failure to describe the known biology. Augmentation of the allometric function added nothing to the simple form. The Gompertz function was consistently effective for the description of daily protein retention rate. The Bridges and Richards functions are more flexible than the Gompertz with respect to the point of inflection, but when applied they resembled the Gompertz and therefore did not materially influence the descriptive outcome. The cubic polynomial, augmented allometric, Bridges and Richards functions, although favoured in other reports, were found to add nothing to the more simple functions. It is concluded that protein retention can be well expressed in relation to live weight by linear and Gompertz functions. Lipid retention could be well described by an allometric relationship with pig mass.

Previous approaches to the description of complex diets, based on n-alkanes and optimization techniques, have grouped the plant species to reduce the number of components. Diet estimates have been obtained with least-squares routines by minimizing the discrepancy between faecal alkane concentrations calculated from herbage concentrations and actual faecal alkane concentrations. The effect of diet selection within groups can only be assessed by using sensitivity tests or by giving subjective weights to the individual plants. In the current study, a new optimization algorithm was developed that selects weightings that lead to consistent estimates of group proportions. The diet of the wild rabbit in a southern Portuguese montado was used as a case study. Estimates of the diet composition obtained using the new algorithm were compared with those of a conventional routine. The new algorithm was shown to provide, on average, more accurate estimates of the proportions of the groups in the diet. The effect of grouping plant species according to criteria other than similarity in n-alkane pattern on the accuracy of estimates was shown to be non-significant.

Twenty-one elite sorghum lines were assessed for resistance to foliar, peduncle, rachis, grain and overall panicle anthracnose under natural infection at Samaru and Bagauda in 1996 and 1997. Three genotypes (R 6078, IS 14384 and CCGM 1/19-1-1) were completely resistant to all forms of the disease while Nagawhite was completely resistant to foliar, peduncle and rachis but moderately resistant to panicle anthracnose. The data indicate vertical disease progression from leaves onto peduncle and the rachis. More genotypes were susceptible to grain than rachis anthracnose thus indicating that grain infection could be direct or through vertical progression and direct pathways.

So far, little has been done on the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on intake and digestibility in tropical grazing conditions. The effect of two nitrogen levels, 0 (NF) and 50 kg/ha (F) for three successive grazing cycles, on organic matter intake (OMi) and digestibility (OMd) for Creole heifers (208 kg live weight) was determined. Two groups of four tethered heifers, allowed 18 kg of dry matter daily, grazed individual NF or F circular areas at 28 re-growth days. The heifers were moved and watered daily. Sward characteristics (height, herbage mass, morphological and chemical composition and in situ tiller measurements), OMi, OMd and feeding behaviour (biting rate, bite size, intake rate, grazing and ruminating times) were evaluated simultaneously per circular area.

Under nitrogen fertilizer, the stems elongated rapidly (by 133%) as did the leaves, but to a lesser extent (by 40%). Consequently, canopy height, leaf and stem masses and crude protein content increased (respectively by 100%, 66%, 186% and 40%), while total bulk density decreased (by 10·5%). Throughout the successive grazing cycles, there was a particular effect on leaf number, both in the F and NF swards, whereas this parameter was not affected by the fertilizer level. Under fertilizer, OMi and OMd were both 9% greater than for the NF sward. The increase in herbage CP content partly explains the rise in OMi, and there is evidence that rumen load has a determining effect on OMi. Leaf mass is the major factor accounting for the 9% increase in OMd under fertilizer regime. On the other hand, whatever the fertilizer regime, OMd was positively influenced by the greater leaf number throughout the grazing cycles. Biting rate, bite size and intake rate were determined respectively by sward height, CP content and stem fraction, whereas grazing and ruminating times were partially influenced by sward characteristics.

In short-season soybean production areas, low soil temperature is potentially a major factor limiting plant growth and yield. Although Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain 532 C is widely used in inoculants in Canadian soybean production, and USDA 110 is widely used in American soybean production, they are both inhibited by low temperatures. Genistein is an important plant-to-bacteria signal compound secreted by soybean roots. The addition of genistein has proven to be an effective means of generating increases in nitrogen fixation and yield but genistein is expensive. We used UV mutagenesis to make 10 mutants from USDA 110 that express nod genes without the addition of plant-to-bacteria signal compounds such as genistein. A field experiment was conducted at the Lods Agronomy Research Centre in southwestern Quebec in 1998 and 1999. The treatments consisted of factorial combinations of inoculant type (no inoculant (control) and inoculants containing the mutants Bj 30050, Bj 30051, Bj 30052, Bj 30053, Bj 30054, Bj 30055, Bj 30056, Bj 30057, Bj 30058, Bj 30059 and the wild type USDA110 or 532 C) and soybean cultivar (Bayfield and Maple Glen). The experiment was structured following a randomized complete block design with four blocks. Data were collected on nodule number, nodule dry weight, shoot nitrogen yield and total nitrogen fixation at five development stages. Averaged over the 2 years of the study, when pods were 2 cm long at one of the four uppermost nodes on the main stem (R4), inoculation with Bj 30055 and Bj 30058 resulted in greater nodule number (23 and 14%, respectively), nodule dry weight (16 and 13%, respectively), shoot nitrogen yield (19 and 21%, respectively) and total nitrogen fixation (10·9 and 12·7%, respectively) than 532 C, which is currently used in Canadian inoculants. The cultivar Bayfield produced more nodules, and higher nodule weight than Maple Glen, but there were no differences between the cultivars for shoot nitrogen yield and total nitrogen fixation.

The vasopressin (VP) and aldosterone responses of swamp buffaloes and Friesian cattle were compared during 3 days of ad libitum water availability and 3 days of water deprivation. During the period of hydration, buffaloes showed significantly higher VP concentrations (2.31±0.09 v. 1.23±0.07 pg/ml), in spite of larger water excretion rate through urine, relative to cattle. During the period of dehydration, although VP increased progressively in both species, the concentration in the buffaloes (66.7±18.6 pg/ml) was five times higher than that of the cattle (12.5±3.2 pg/ml) on Day 3. Even though the rate of urine excretion in the buffaloes decreased markedly during water deprivation, the total volume of urine excretion was still greater than that of the cattle. Haematocrit, serum osmotic pressure and total protein in both species increased significantly during water deprivation, but the rate of the increase was greater in buffaloes than in cattle. There was no correlation between sodium or potassium excretion and aldosterone concentration in either species. These results demonstrated that the VP elevation in buffaloes was largely attributable to the greater decrease of plasma volume caused by the greater water excretion. The lower retentivity of plasma volume probably means that buffaloes have a greater dependence on external water rather than to conserve internal water, because of the evolutionary adaptation of buffaloes to wet environments.

Atriplex nummularia L. (atriplex) foliage and urea-treated straw have been used as nitrogen supplements for Barbarine lambs given Opuntia ficus-indica f. inermis (cactus) and their effects on feed intake, diet apparent digestibility, nitrogen balance and daily gain have been evaluated. Twenty-four lambs (mean live weight 19·9±2·79 kg) were randomly allocated to one of four experimental groups, groups 1–3 received freshly cut pads of cactus ad libitum. Group 1 was supplemented with 600 g untreated barley straw (C+US), while group 2 received 600 g urea-treated straw (C+UTS). Group 3 received 600 g untreated straw and 400 g atriplex (C+A). The amount of atriplex was calculated so that groups 2 and 3 receive iso-nitrogenous diets (i.e. C+UTS and C+A). Group 4 (US+BW) received a diet commonly offered to sheep by Tunisian smallholders, untreated straw ad libitum and 400 g of ground barley grain and wheat bran mixture (50[ratio ]50). A growth trial (60 days) followed by a digestibility trial (8 days) were performed in 1999. Irrespective of dietary treatment, cactus intake was high, averaging 500 g dry matter (DM)/day. It was not affected (P>0·05) with N supplementation, as urea-treated straw or atriplex. Sheep fed cactus-containing diets drank considerably less (P<0·001) water than those on the common diet (US+BW). Nitrogen provision improved significantly apparent digestibility of cactus-based diets. Urea treatment of straw increased content of digestible dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and cell wall (NDF) by 100, 100, 120 and 290 g/kg diet, respectively. There was a further increase when atriplex was provided instead of urea-treated straw. Nitrogen balance was positive across all dietary treatments but was improved when the nitrogen content of cactus-based diets was increased. Sheep fed on cactus and supplemented with atriplex retained the same amount of N as those fed the common diet (US+BW). The efficiency of microbial N production, estimated by the urinary excretion of allantoin, was improved (P<0·05) with N supplementation of cactus-diets (5·7, 12·4 and 11·4 mg/kg digestible OM intake for diets C+US, C+UTS, C+A, respectively). The diet C+US covered maintenance requirements of the sheep (7·7 g of daily gain). Nitrogen supplementation of cactus-based diets raised the average daily gain of lambs. Indeed, sheep given C+UTS or C+A diets grew at a rate of 19·9 or 31·4 g/day, respectively. It is noteworthy to mention that C+A and US+BW diets had similar effect (P>0·05) on sheep growth (31·4 and 39·7 g/day, respectively). It is concluded that cactus may be considered as an emergency feed and water source for sheep in arid and semi-arid zones. Nitrogen supplementation of cactus-based diets with urea-treated straw or atriplex foliage improved the feeding value of these diets and consequently sheep growth. A cactus-based diet, supplemented with atriplex, promoted similar growth in sheep as the commonly used diet (US+BW).

The proanthocyanidin (PA) status of 116 accessions from the Leucaena genus representing 21 species, 6 subspecies, 3 varieties and 4 interspecific hybrids was evaluated under uniform environmental and experimental conditions at Redland Bay, Queensland, Australia in October 1997. The PA content of lyophilized youngest fully expanded leaves was measured spectrophotometrically by the butanol/HCl assay referenced to L. leucocephala ssp. glabrata standard PA and expressed as L. leucocephala ssp. glabrata PA equivalents (LLPAE). Considerable interspecific variation in PA concentration existed within the genus, ranging from 0–339 g LLPAE/kg dry matter (DM). Taxa including L. confertiflora, L. cuspidata, L. esculenta and L. greggii contained very high (>180 g LLPAE/kg DM) PA concentrations. Similarly, many agronomically superior accessions from L. diversifolia, L. pallida and L. trichandra contained extremely high (up to 250 g LLPAE/kg DM) PA concentrations, although these taxa exhibited wide intraspecific variation in PA content offering the potential to select accessions with lower (120–160 g LLPAE/kg DM) PA content. Commercial cultivars of L. leucocephala ssp. glabrata, known to produce forage of superior quality, contained low amounts of PA (33–39 g LLPAE/kg DM). Artificial interspecific hybrids had PA contents intermediate to those of both parents. Lesser-known taxa, including L. collinsii, L. lanceolata, L. lempirana, L. macrophylla, L. magnifica, L. multicapitula, L. salvadorensis and L. trichodes, contained undetectable to low (0–36 g LLPAE/kg DM) quantities of PA and have potential as parents to breed interspecific hybrids of low PA status and superior forage quality. Extractable PA was the dominant PA component, accounting for 91% of total PA within the genus. Regression analysis of accession ranks from different experiments compared to these results indicated that genetic regulation of Leucaena spp. PA content was consistent (P<0·01) under different edapho-climatic environments. The distribution of PA within the Leucaena genus did not concur with the predictions of various evolutionary and phylogenetic plant defence theories.

Under perennial grasslands, nitrogen contained in organic matter becomes available at varying rates via mineralization throughout the growing season. The amount of N present at any given time indicates only the quantity immediately present, and does not include N which has already been removed either by leaching or uptake into the plant system, nor the N which will become available as organic matter breaks down over time. Long-term aerobic laboratory incubation methods have been used successfully to estimate potential N mineralization under various cropping conditions. They had not been used successfully, however, to estimate potential N availability under perennial grassland.

In this research, soil samples from two long-term perennial grassland sites were taken before and after N fertilizer application at rates of 0, 175, 350 and 525 kg/ha. The soils were incubated in the laboratory at 35 °C and were eluted at 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 22 and 30-week intervals, the length of time prescribed for determining N mineralization potential. Because a plateau had not been reached, incubation was allowed to continue for 198 weeks and 148 weeks for the pre- and post-N samples, respectively. Total N was high, as was soil organic matter in both sets of soil samples. Nitrogen mineralization potential was underestimated after 30 weeks of incubation, and overestimated after 148 weeks. The closest agreement between N measured and the estimated N mineralization potential, came after 198 weeks of incubation. This study confirmed the high N-supplying capacity of soil under long-term perennial grasslands. It also indicated that the recommended 30-week period needed to estimate N mineralization potential under other cropping systems was insufficient for a perennial grassland soil. Cumulative differences in N mineralization were found with varying rates of N fertilizer application, but these differences were rarely seen on an individual weekly basis, nor were they significant at the termination of the experiment. The response to N application differed by site.

Sole crops and intercrops of field beans (Vicia faba L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), at three nitrogen rates, were evaluated for production of whole crop forage in two field experiments, one spring and one autumn drilled, on Imperial College at Wye farm, UK, during 1997–1998. Forage quality attributes measured were crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and ash content. In both experiments, dry matter (DM) and percentage dry matter (DM%) were improved by intercropping compared with beans sole crops. Intercropping enhanced CP and NDF contents and WSC compared with beans and wheat sole crops, respectively. Nitrogen (N) applications up to 75 kg/ha produced the optimal intercrop forage yield and crude protein content. This input of N is smaller than that for other forage crops.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of short transport stress on ewes during di-oestrus and pro-oestrus. In Experiment 1, intra-vaginal sponges containing fluorogestone acetate were inserted into ewes for a period of 12 days. A gonadotrophin (PMSG) injection was given at the time of sponge withdrawal to induce oestrous. To dissociate the possible effect of PMSG during pro-oestrus, a second experiment was designed in which prostaglandin was used as the oestrous induction factor. Ewes in both experiments were subjected to 30 min of transport by truck. In addition, oestrous behaviour and serum cortisol concentration were evaluated. Control groups consisted of un-transported ewes. In both experiments, cortisol concentration was greater (P <0·01) in transported than in un-transported animals. No difference (P> 0·05) was found between moving the ewes during pro-oestrous or di-oestrus (0·30±0·03 v. 0·53±0·18 ng/ml and 3·88±0·97 v. 2·94±0·73 ng/ml in Experiment 1 and 2 respectively). The number of ewes detected in oestrous was similar (P>0·05) among those stressed during di-oestrus, pro-oestrus or un-transported animals within each experiment (66, 47 and 42% respectively in Experiment 1 and 96·7 in all situations in Experiment 2). In general, higher cortisol concentration and more ewes displaying oestrous behaviour were detected in Experiment 2. It was concluded that under the conditions of these experiments, no difference was found in the proportion of ewes displaying oestrus regardless of the phase of the oestrous cycle in which they were transported.

Body mass was measured and body composition and energy requirements were estimated in sheep at four air temperatures (0 °C to 30 °C) and at four levels of energy offered (4715 to 11785 kJ/day) at a time when the sheep reached a constant body mass. Final body mass was affected mainly by metabolizable energy intake and, to a lesser extent, by air temperature, whereas maintenance requirements were affected mainly by air temperature. Mean energy requirements were similar and lowest at 20 °C and 30 °C (407·5 and 410·5 kJ/kg0·75, respectively) and increased with a decrease in air temperature (528·8 kJ/kg0·75 at 10 °C and 713·3 kJ/kg0·75 at 0 °C). Absolute total body water volume was related positively to metabolizable energy intake and to air temperature. Absolute fat, protein and ash contents were all affected positively by metabolizable energy intake and tended to be related positively to air temperature. In proportion to body mass, total body water volume decreased with an increase in metabolizable energy intake and with an increase in air temperature. Proportionate fat content increased with an increase in metabolizable energy intake and tended to increase with an increase in air temperature. In contrast, proportionate protein content decreased with an increase in metabolizable energy intake and tended to decrease with an increase in air temperature. In all cases, the multiple linear regression using both air temperature and metabolizable energy intake improved the fit over the simple linear regressions of either air temperature or metabolizable energy intake and lowered the standard error of the estimate. The fit was further improved and the standard error of the estimate was further lowered using a polynomial model with both independent variables to fit the data, since there was little change in the measurements between 20 °C and 30 °C, as both air temperatures were most likely within the thermal neutral zone of the sheep. It was concluded that total body energy content, total body water volume, fat and protein content of sheep of the same body mass differed or tended to differ when kept at different air temperatures.

A model is presented which will predict mean age at first egg (AFE) for pullets of laying strains reared under non-limiting environmental conditions but exposed to a single change in photoperiod during the rearing stage. An initial analysis of 12 previously reported trials involving a wide range of genotypes showed that the response to an increase in photoperiod is not simply the inverse of the response to an equal decrease in photoperiod applied at the same age. Maximum sensitivity to a reduction in photoperiod was found shortly before onset of lay, whereas maximum sensitivity to an increment in photoperiod was observed at around 10 weeks of age. Two experiments were conducted to provide further data. The first compared the effect of 3-h increases in photoperiod from 8 h to 11 h or from 11 h to 14 h with the double increment from 8 h to 14 h and also tested a reduction from 11 h to 8 h, all imposed at 17 weeks of age. AFE was advanced to a similar extent by the changes from 8 to 11 h and from 11 to 14 h (9.8 and 10.9 days respectively). Response to the double increment was not additive: AFE on this treatment was 13.3 days earlier than for constant 8 h controls. Reduction in photoperiod from 11 to 8 h at 17 weeks delayed AFE by 18.7 days compared with constant 11-h controls. In the second experiment, pullets of two strains were transferred from 8 to 16-h photoperiods and from 16 to 8 h at 5, 7, 9, 15, 17 and 19 weeks of age. Controls were kept on constant 8 and constant 16-h days. Transfer from 8 to 16-h photoperiods at 5 weeks of age had no effect on AFE. At 7 weeks there was a bimodal response with some pullets subsequently showing advanced maturity and others not. Maximum stimulation of early maturity (31 days on average for the two genotypes) was obtained at 9 weeks of age and response to stimulation declined linearly with age thereafter. The delay in AFE resulting from a reduction in photoperiod (16 to 8 h) increased linearly between 0 and 15 weeks. At 17 and 19 weeks, the response was bimodal, with some pullets maturing at the same age as long-day controls and others showing delayed maturity. Using all this evidence and some other unpublished data, a model is developed to predict AFE as a function of mean photoperiod and change in photoperiod during the rearing phase. Elements are incorporated to allow for the insensitivity of pullets younger than 50 days to an increase in photoperiod and the effect observed late in rearing when a change in photoperiod comes too late to alter AFE for the most precocious individuals in a flock. Two coefficients are required to adjust for genotype. One describes mean AFE for the genotype when reared on constant daylength and the other defines the rate at which age effects the response to a single change in photoperiod.
