Propionate and glucose metabolism were compared in two groups of Scottish Blackface ewes, one in which ewes had been fitted with vaginal pessaries impregnated with progesterone-analogue for the synchronization of oestrus and the other when ewes were in anoestrus. In ewes given the same amount of feed, the production rate of propionate increased significantly (P < 0·05) from 33 in anoestrous ewes to 44 gC/day in ewes with pessaries. The proportion of glucose-carbon apparently synthesized from propionate also increased significantly (P < 0·05) from 0·31 in anoestrous ewes to 0·44 in ewes with pessaries. The proportion of glucose-carbon apparently recycled was also significantly (P < 0·01) increased from 0·12 to 0·22. No changes were observed in glucose concentration, production rate or oxidation rate between the two groups of ewes.

Ninety-two British Friesians (56 cows and 36 heifers) were divided into two groups during weeks 3–10 of lactation and received ad libitum either complete diet H (65% concentrates, 35% grass silage, 11·7 MJ ME/kg D.M.) or diet M (50% concentrates, 50% grass silage, 11·2 MJ ME/kg D.M.). In weeks 11· 20 half the animals of each group continued to receive the same diet (HH or MM) while the other half were changed from diet H to M (HM) or from diet M to L (ML). Diet L contained 35% concentrates, 65% grass silage and 10·7 MJ ME/kg D.M. The crude protein concentration of all diets was maintained at about 157 g/kg D.M. by the addition of soya-bean meal to diets M and L.

During weeks 3–10 the mean D.M. intake (kg/day), milk yield (kg/day), milk protein (g/kg) and live-weight change (kg/day) for animals on diets H and M were 15·0, 21·7, 33·3, 0·50 and 12·9, 20·2, 31·5, 0·35 respectively. Differences were significant for D.M. intake, milk yield and milk protein concentration. Although milk-fat concentration of cows given diet H (40·2 g/kg) was similar to that of cows given diet M (39·9 g/kg), heifers receiving diet H had a significantly lower value (37·0 g/kg) than those given diet M (39·8 g/kg).

When animals were changed from diet H to M or from M to L at week 11, D.M. intake, milk yield and milk-protein concentration decreased. However, milk-fat concentration and live-weight change were generally unaffected.

During the complete experimental period, weeks 3–20, animals on treatments HH, HM, MM and ML had mean D.M. intakes and milk yields of 15·3, 14·2, 13·2, 12·4 kg/day and 19·7, 18·5, 17·8, 17·0 kg/day. Milk-protein concentration, was closely related to D.M. intake, but only with heifers did diet H significantly depress milk-fat concentration. The highest live-weight gain was recorded on treatment HH (0·40 kg/day) and the lowost on treatment ML (0·29 kg/day) with intermediate values for treatments HM and MM.

In vivodigestibility coefficients of D.M. and organic matter for diet H (0·731, 0·757) were significantly higher than those of diet L (0·707, 0·734) with intermediate values for diet M. However, for acid-detergent fibre the digestibility coefficient for diet H was significantly lower (0·562) than for diet L (0·662). The digestibility coefficients for nitrogen in all three diets were similar.

Estimates of mean efficiency of utilization of ME for lactation were made on a weekly basis and were 0·56 and 0·64 for animals on diets H and M in weeks 3·10. During weeks 11·20 the mean values for animals on treatments HH, HM, MM and ML were 0·46, 0·53, 0·51 and 0·59, respectively.

In six experiments the effects of various factors on plant-weight variation (sum of squares of deviation from the mean shoot weight) at harvest were examined. These factors were seed size, sowing depth, time of seedling emergence, size at different stages of development, within-row spacing, density and row position within a bed.

In a drilled experiment, up to 25% of the variation in mature leek size could be attributed to variation in time of seedling emergence. Similarly, in the experiments which used transplants, 15% of the variation in the mature crop could be associated with variation in size shortly after seedling emergence from peat blocks.

Variation in row position within a 4-row bed never accounted for more than 11% of the weight variation at harvest, and variation in within-row spacing never accounted for more than 4% of weight variation. However, the coefficient of variation (c.v.) of leeks growing at 22 plants/m2 was 44% whereas the c.v. of those growing at 50 plants/m2 was 61%.

Using large seeds or sowing deeply gave a quicker emergence and a higher percentage emergence than using small seeds or sowing shallowly. However, these factors each never accounted for more than 7% of the weight variation in mature leeks.

Most of the plant-weight variation could not be attributed to any of the measured factors in any of the experiments. The c.v. of leeks which had emerged on a specific day and had been grown in a uniform environment, was between 50 and 66%, which was similar to the c.v.s observed in the transplant and drilled experiments. However, selecting for large transplants reduced the c.v. to 28% in one experiment; this effect was only partly attributable to the greater mean plant size resulting from this treatment.

Field experiments were conducted for 2 years in Peshawar, North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, to study the effect of three levels of boron (1, 2 and 3 kg/ha) on the amino acid composition of wheat protein. The soil was clay loam, alluvial in nature, with a pH value of 7·8, and hot-water-soluble boron content of 0·58 mg/kg.

Positive linear and negative quadratic effects of boron were observed on the protein and ash contents of wheat grain. Most of the essential amino acids were linearly increased with increasing supply of boron. There was a negative linear relationship of boron with all non-essential amino acids, except histidine and tyrosine.

Lysine was the most deficient amino acid in wheat protein. Chemical score based on this amino acid was positively affected by boron. There was also an improvement in the amino acid profile due to boron.

Four repletion experiments were carried out to clarify the roles of molybdenum, sulphur and iron in the inhibition of copper absorption by ingested soils. In each experiment, groups of four to six hypocupraemic Scottish Blackface ewes were repleted for 21 days with diets containing CuSO4 and/or soil Cu and the responses in plasma Cu used to assess the availability of the Cu supplied.

In Expts 1 and 2, three soils varying in Mo but high in Fe content and derived from Lower Lias Clay, Namurian Shale and Weald loam were added at 100 g/kg D.M. to diets of low (1·0) and high (4·1 g/kg D.M.) S contents: they provided 3·1, 2·8 and 0·1 mg Mo/kg D.M. respectively. When compared with groups given no soil, each soil increased plasma Cu repletion in the low S experiment and decreased it in the high S experiment. Inhibition was thus not completely dependent on soil Mo but dependent upon dietary S.

Soils varying in Fe content were compared in the manner of the above experiments in Expts 3 and 4. Two Fe-rich soils, developed from the Upper Chalk and a Barton Clay and providing 2·8 and 1·5 g Fe/kg D.M., impaired Cu repletion on the high S diet but not on the low S diet. A soil, developed on a sand from the Bagshot Beds and providing only 0·15 g Fe/kg D.M., did not impair repletion but FeSO4, providing 0·8 g Fe/kg D.M. did so, irrespective of dietary S content. Ingestion of Fe-rich soils in a high S diet caused three-fold increases in rumen sulphide concentrations 5 and 24 h after feeding. It is suggested that soil ingestion impairs Cu absorption in sheep by trapping S as heavy metal sulphides such as FeS and releasing sulphide in the acid abomasum.

Experiments were conducted over two cropping seasons at the Sugar Cane Estate of the Nigerian Sugar Company, Bacita, Nigeria to determine the effectiveness of additional nitrogen fertilizer, chemical sprays and delayed planting in controlling flowering in two commercial sugar-cane varieties (Co. 1001 andCp. 29/116). Application of 150 and 250 kg N/ha, 8 weeks before initiation, reduced flowering in Co. 1001 by up to 13·5 and 11 % respectively. Flowering was as low as 2% in some of the above treatments while the average flowering in plots with no additional nitrogen application was more than 80%. imilarly, application of diuron (4·0 kg/ha) and paraquat (0'5 kg/ha) to the top leaves (3 weeks before initiation) of Co. 1001 reduced flowering in this variety up to 45 and 35% respectively. Neither the application of diuron and paraquat nor additional nitrogen fertilizer sufficiently reduced flowering in Cp. 29/116. The time of planting affected flowering. Over 85% flowering was observed in November 1982 from Co. 1001 fields planted in January 1982 (10 months before initiation time). However, fields of the same variety planted in June 1982 (4 months before initiation time) did not show any initiation until harvest in May 1983. The implications of the above results are discussed.

A field experiment was made on rice during the rainy seasons of 1982 and 1983 to study the relative efficiency of prilled urea and urea super granules (USG) applied broadcast or deep placed at different times. USG gave more, longer and heavier panicles with a higher percentage of filled grains than prilled urea. Deep placement of 60 kg N/ha as USG in two applications (half 10 days after transplanting and half at panicle initiation) gave the same grain yield as 120 kg N/ha of prilled urea applied half at final puddling and half at panicle initiation. Urea super granules, therefore, hold considerable promise as a nitrogen fertilizer for rice.

The efficiency of visual selection in a glasshouse of 1600 seedlings compared with visual selection in the field of the same clones is examined. Also the amount of agreement in assessment between four different potato breeders screening the same clones is investigated. Seedlings were grown from true seed in four-inch pots in a glasshouse and all the clones which produced tubers were grown in the field the following year. Clones which produced more than one tuber from a seedling were grown at two locations in the first clonal year. One of the sites used in the first clonal year is normally used for potato yield trials (i.e. a ware site) and the other is normally used for the production of healthy seed tubers (i.e. a seed site). In all three environments, the tubers produced from each plant were assessed by four breeders independently on a 1–9 scale of increasing attractiveness.

From the data it was found that the repeatability of assessment between the glasshouse and the first clonal year was low in that the correlation between the average preference score of the four breeders in the glasshouse and each of the two first clonal year sites accounted for only 8·24 and 6·84% of the total variation. Many clones which had low scores in the glasshouse were subsequently given high scores in the first clonal year. It was therefore concluded that selection of seedlings was not very efficient. Although, in general, the weight of the tuber that was planted greatly influenced whether a clone was selected in the first clonal year, a large number of clones which produced only small tubers in the glasshouse were subsequently selected in the first clonal year.

Within each environment the four breeders were either all selecting, or all rejecting, a much higher proportion of clones than would be expected if selection had been made completely at random. The breeders were in most agreement when assessing clones at the ‘ware’ site, and in most disagreement when assessing them grown in the glasshouse from true seed. Therefore the poor efficiency of selection of seedlings grown in the glasshouse was not, in the main, a result of a high error variance in visual assessment but rather due to poor association between the performance of seedlings and first clonal year plants.

The data obtained from 360 progeny families produced by crossing 40 F2 plants from each of three wheat crosses HD 2009 × HD 1949, Raj 821 × WH 147 and NP 876 × HD 1949, to three testers (the testers being the two parents of each original cross and their F1 in each case) were subjected to triple test cross analysis for detecting and estimating additive, dominance and epistatic components of genetic variation and interaction of these components with environment for plant height, spike length, number of tillers per plant, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, number of days from sowing to heading and to maturity, grain yield per plant and grain yield/above ground dry matter ratio (harvest index). Epistasis was an important element for plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of grains per spike and grain yield per plant in all three crosses. Both the i type and j and l type epistasis were equally important. In general, the magnitude of additive component was larger than that of dominance component. The additive gene effects were more sensitive to environmental change than the dominance gene effects. Similarly, j and l type epistasis was relatively more sensitive to environment than the i type epistasis.

Soil water content affected the nodulation and N2 fixation of Phaseolus vulgaris by Rhizobium phaseoli and the utilization of mineral N by plants. Plants grown in wet soil produced twice as much as those grown on dry soils. Nodule weight and activity were five to ten times greater than those from dry soils. At 45 days, N additions inhibited nodulation, but this effect was partially diminished in wet soils.

The maximum N utilization from fertilizer to produce dry matter did not correspond to maximum N utilization by pods.

A surgical procedure is described for placing a catheter in the mesenteric vein of sheep, such that blood draining the reticulo-rumen is not sampled. This catheter, together withothers in the mesenteric vein and carotid artery, was used to determine mesenteric blood flow and the net absorption of glucose in five sheep fed both dried grass and ground maize-based diets. The mean (± S.E.) mesenteric blood flow rates were 33 ±0·9 and 37 ± 5·7ml/min/kg live weight when fed the dried grass and maize-based diets respectively. These flow rates, together with the small venousarterial differences in plasma volatile fattyacid concentrations observed, indicated that the mesenteric catheter did not sample blood draining the reticulo-rumen in the conscious, fed animal. Further confirmation was provided by subsequent post-mortem examinations of the catheters. When fed the dried-grass diet, a significant net absorption of glucose could not be detected. However, when fed the maize-based diet a net glucose absorption of 19·3 ± 0·75 mmol/h was observed.

Vascular and non-vascular cell walls were isolated separately from leaves, upper stems and lower stems of 12 kale (Brassica oleracea L.) cultivars, by a sieving technique. The digestible organic matter in the dry matter (DOMD) of the cell walls and of the whole plants was determined by pepsin-cellulase digestion. The measured whole-plant DOMD correlated closely with the DOMD predicted by adding together the amounts of non-digested material derived from all the plant's component cell-wall fractions. Differences in DOMD between cultivars were determined primarily by the amount of vascular cell walls in the stems, particularly the lower stems; that is, by the stem anatomy. The vascular cell walls of the upper stems had a wider range of DOMD values and a higher mean DOMD than the vascular cell walls of the lower stems. Thus cell-wall composition made some contribution to determining the whole-plant DOMD, although it contributed less than the anatomy of the stem.

An examination of the effects of adding phosphorus to the soil on nodulation and P utilization in Phaseolus vulgaris L. showed a positive response in plant weight to increasing rates of phosphorus (32P) when water tension was low in the pots.

The efficiency of the utilization of fertilizer-P was directly influenced by the water content of the soil, showing increasing P accumulation after flowering.

A highly positive interaction between P addition, water content and nodulation was observed. Nodules were shown to have a high P requirement, with phosphorus (32P) contributing to an increase in the number and size of nodules.

The air over a crop of flowering winter oil-seed rape was sampled for 39 days with an automatic volumetric spore trap. Considerable quantities of rape pollen were caught on most days. Density of pollen showed marked diel periodicity; few grains were caught at night and at mid-day, peaks occurred in late morning and early afternoon. It is concluded that wind plays a considerable role in pollination of the crop.

Experiments testing the effects of variety, sowing date, seed rate, amount and time of application of nitrogenous fertilizer in the spring, application of nitrogenous fertilizerin the autumn and disease control at four sites in the north of England in 1980, 1981 and 1982 are described and the results are discussed.

The siting of the experiments and the seasons had important effects on grain yield and influenced the response to the total amount of nitrogen used and to disease control. The other husbandry factors produced more consistent effects. The choice of variety and drilling date had thegreatest influence on yield. The responses to the different seed rates, to the method of applying nitrogenous fertilizer and to autumn-applied nitrogen were smaller. The effects were additive.

It is argued that differences in the efficiency of light interception by the foliage affects grain yield; that light interception may be influenced by the state of the foliage at the start of the period of rapid growth from April onwards; and that site, season and husbandry all affect the development of the crop up to that point.

The field experiments were conducted at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in summer-rainy seasons of 1980 and 1981 to study the effect of different sorghum-legume intercropping systems and weed control methods on growth, yield and nutrient uptake by different crops and on weeds. The intercropping of legumes increased growth, uptake of N, P and K and yield of sorghum compared with sole sorghum. However, maximum increase was obtained when it was grown in association with fodder cow pea. All intercrops smothered the weeds but maximum suppression was by fodder cow pea. The total uptake of nutrients (N, P and K) was also greater in intercropping systems. Pre-emergence application of fluchloralin at 0·5 kg/ha was most effective in all intercropping systems followed by nitrofen at 1·0 kg/ha. Hand weeding and fluchloralin application also led to higher nutrient uptake by sorghum and the whole system than the unweeded control. Application of fluchloralin and nitrofen controlled most of the weeds and reduced nutrient removal compared with the control but was less effective than hand weeding.

Although a given foreign breed may offer worthwhile genetic improvement, the cost of importing purebred stock makes its evaluation difficult. An experiment was performed in which the breeds compared were represented instead by semen from boars standing at national artificial insemination stations in their native countries. Contemporary groups of Large White × Norwegian Landrace females were inseminated, some with British Large White (LW) semen, and some with semen from Canadian Yorkshire (CY), Danish Landrace (DL), Norwegian Landrace (NL), or United States (American) Duroc (AD) or Yorkshire (AY). One pair (male castrate and gilt) from each litter was performance tested from 27 to 82 kg live weight fed ad libitum (AL), another pairwas tested over the same weight range but fed to a time-based scale (TS). The number of LW, CY, DL, AD, AY and NL sires used was 51, 12, 21, 7, 6 and 23 respectively; a total of 401 litterswas evaluated. The differences between the progeny of LW sires and those of CY, DL, AD, AY and NL were, respectively: in daily live-weight gain (g), AL, –30, 40, –80, –50, –40 (maximum s.E. 16) with no significant differences for TS; in food conversion ratio, AL,0·02, – 0·13, 0·03, –0·05, 0·00 and TS, 000, – 0·14, 0·05, –0·03, –0·06 (maximum S.E. 0·049 for both feeding regimens); in percentage of lean by weight in the rumpback joint, AL, –2·1, –1·9, –1·8, 2·3, –0·7 and TS, – 0·1, –0·9, –1·9, 3·0, – 1·4 (maximum s.E. 1·28 for both); in overall economic worth (pence per pig sired), AL, – 150, 50, – 170, 110, – 40 and TS, – 10, 100, – 200, 190, 30 (maximum s.E. 83 for both). The U.S. Yorkshire and Danish Landrace seem unlikely to be of use commercially in the U.K., while the most promising breeds, U.S. Duroc and Canadian Yorkshire, have not yet been evaluated with sufficient precision to reduce the risk involved in their use to an acceptable level.

Mulching polybag oil-palm seedlings with bunch refuse, shredded polythene, sawdust, grass, wood shavings and kernel shells ‘all-year’ or throughout the nursery period (May–May), in the ‘wet-season only’ (May-November), and in the ‘dry-season only’ (November–May) resulted in soil temperature differences which did not exceed 1 °C at 5 cm polybag depth. This was attributed to the high rainfall which reduced considerably the soil temperature differences between mulched and unmulched soil in the wet season and to the enhanced leaf canopy in ‘all-year’ and ‘wet season only’ mulchings which shaded soil in polybags in the dry season.

The mulch materials and times of their application significantly influenced growth variables like number of leaves, plant height and stem girth, and number of blast-affected seedlings at 6 months after sowing (wet season). By 12 months after sowing, all growth characters measured were similar in the various treatments, indicating compensatory growth at the latter half of the growing period (dry season).

N, P, K, Mg and Ca contents of seedlings were not significantly affected by either mulch materials or times of their application. The results emphasize that mulching for at least 6 months during the early or late nursery period and the use of various mulches may be beneficial to oil-palm seedling growth.

The development of the acrosomic system and the spermatid nucleus were used to define 14 stages of the seminiferous epithelial cycle in goats; these stages provided a basis for the examination of the behaviour of different spermatogenic cells which gave an idea of the efficiency of spermatogenesis. Eighteen steps of acrosome development (spermiogenesis) were observed in testicular material stained with periodic acid-Schiff. The first 14 steps were used to classify SEC into 14 (I–XIV) stages which in turn were employed to study the pattern of differentiation of spermatogenic cells by counting them in each stage of the cycle. Three generations of type A (A1, A2, A3), one generation of type intermediate (In) and two generations of type B (B1, B2) spermatogonia could be distinguished. A1 spermatogonia divided primarily in stages IX–X to produce A2 spermatogonia which in turn divided in stages XII–XIII to produce A3 spermatogonia and A, spermatogonia. A3 spermatogonia divided in stage XIV to produce In spermatogonia whereas A1 spermatogonia did not divide till the next cycle but underwent 26·3 % degeneration. In spermatogonia divided to form B1 spermatogonia in stages III–V which further divided to produce B2 spermatogonia in stage VI. Types A3, In and B2 spermatogonia showed 15·0, 25·0 and 25·8% degeneration respectively. B2 spermatogonia divided in stages VII–VIII to produce double the number of primary spermatocytes which persisted without any degeneration till stage XIII of the following cycle and divided at the beginning of stage XIV to form double the number of secondary spermatocytes. These cells divided at the end of stage XIV to form less than double the number of young round spermatids, showing 10·4% degeneration. It is concluded that the development of the acrosomic system as well as the spermatid nucleus could be conveniently used to study the behaviour of spermatogenic cells and that the process of spermatogenesis was less efficient than thought previously.

Gabriel (1971) proposed a technique for displaying the rows and columns of a twoway table as a two-dimensional biplot so that any element of the table can be approximated by the inner product of vectors corresponding to the appropriate row and column. The technique is useful for investigating the pattern of response of varieties over different environments, and substantially increases the information available from the more familiar methods of regression and principal component analysis without need for additional computation.
