A natural rock phosphate, ‘Kodjari” (RP), sparingly soluble, indigenous to Burkina Faso, and a commercial single superphosphate (SSP) fertilizer were studied at Farako-Bâ in the Northern Guinea Savannah (NGS) and at Oipasse in the Sudan Savannah (SS) regions of Burkina Faso. A 3-year crop sequence either of cowpea, maize and sorghum or of cowpea, sorghum and sorghum was used, respectively, in the NGS and SS regions. The sorghum crop in the third year was not fertilized with any phosphorus (P) source. The objectives of the research were to study the direct and residual effects of the P fertilizers on soil fertility improvement in order to boost agricultural productivity in both regions.

Cowpea daylength-insensitive cultivars, in both regions, and maize and sorghum in the NGS and SS regions, respectively, responded more strongly to SSP than to RP fertilizer treatments. The optimum rate of SSP and RP source was 21·8 kg P/ha and 43·6 kg P/ha, respectively, for cowpea in both regions. The optimum rates of phosphorus fertilizer applied in the second year to maize in the NGS and to sorghum in the SS region, in addition to the optimum rate of P applied to cowpea the previous year, was 10·9 kg P/ha of SSP or 43·6 kg P/ha of RP, and 21·8 kg P/ha of SSP or 43·6 kg P/ha of RP, respectively. Both P sources had significant residual effects for up to 2 years. The agronomic effectiveness of RP relative to SSP, in the year of application of both fertilizers, was greater for cowpea than for maize in the NGS region and similar for cowpea and sorghum in the SS region; it increased markedly for the two subsequent cereal crops in both regions. Cowpea fertilization with both P sources proved, therefore, to be effective in improving the soil fertility and boosting the productivity of cereal crops in the 3-year crop sequence.

The present study was designed to estimate the effects of the mutant su1 on the genetic regulation of fitness-related traits when introgressed into field maize backgrounds. Estimated genetic effects of agronomic traits in Su1 v. su1 plants were monitored in two separate mean generation designs. The first involved unrelated inbred lines EP42 and A631, while two Corn Belt inbred lines, A619 and A632, were used for the second design. Parents, F1s, F2s and backcrosses were crossed to the su1 inbred P39 as the donor of su1 and the 12 crosses were successively self-pollinated for 5 years. For each cross, Su1 and su1 kernels were evaluated separately in a growth chamber under controlled environmental conditions following a randomized complete block design. In addition, the genotypes were evaluated in field trials in 10 × 10 triple lattice designs during 2010 and 2011 at Pontevedra in north-western Spain; and in 2010 at Algiers, located in the sub-humid North of Algeria. The performance of su1 plants was lower when compared to the Su1 plants for all traits evaluated in both designs and across environments. The estimates of genetic effects of Su1 v. su1 plants were strongly affected by genotype and environment. The results suggest that, depending on specific sweet × field maize interaction, seedling vigour and, particularly, chlorophyll content (CCM) were the most critical traits in determining su1 viability. However, the complexity of the genetic regulation of emergence and the great heterogeneity of environmental conditions in the field evaluation prevent the estimation of the genetic regulation on sugary1 fitness.

The optimal feeding time of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (SB) in whole milk (WM) and starter feed on growth performance and health in dairy calves was evaluated. Forty-eight newborn Holstein calves (body weight (BW) = 39.45 ± 2.48 kg) were randomly assigned to one of the four treatment groups (12 calves per treatment; seven females and five males) in a complete randomized block design and fed (1) WM without microencapsulated SB (CON) supplementation; (2) 4 g/day SB added to WM since days 4–32 (SB-4-32); (3) 4 g/day SB added to WM since days 61–74 and an equal amount was added to starter since days 75–88 (SB-61-88) and (4) 4 g/day SB added to WM since days 4–74 and an equal amount was added to starter since days 75–88 (SB-4-88). Total dry matter intake, starter intake, BW, average daily gain and gain-to-feed were similar between treatments. Calves fed SB-4-32, and SB-4-88 had lower faecal score during pre-weaning, and overall. In addition, calves in SB-4-32 and SB-4-88 groups had fewer numbers of days with scours during the pre-weaning period, and throughout the study. Calves fed SB-61-88 had greater serum total protein during post-weaning. Post-weaning and overall albumin concentrations were greater in SB-4-32 and SB-4-88 calves and tended to be greater in the pre-weaning period compared to control calves. In general, the time of SB addition had no remarkable effect on performance but better faecal score within the pre- and post-weaning periods.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the non-carcass components (NCC) of Berganês ecotype lambs of different sexual classes and genotypes using univariate and multivariate statistics, carrying out two experimental trials. In order to evaluate the effects of the sexual class, non-castrated males (BNC), castrated males (BC) and females (BF) of Berganês ecotype lambs were used, with mean initial body weight of 27 ± 3.1 kg. To evaluate crossbreeding, non-castrated male lambs of the genotypes Berganês (BG), Berganês × Santa Inês (BSI) and Berganês × Dorper (BD) were used, as well as the control Dorper × Santa Inês (DSI), all with mean initial body weight of 28 ± 3.8 kg. The weight and yield of the total by-products was higher for BNC. Regarding the genotype, BSI showed higher weight and yield of internal fat, but the weight and yield of the total by-products was higher for BG and BD. In factorial analysis (FA), the NCC, more correlated with empty body weight (EBW) and total weight gain (TWG), showed higher eigenvectors for factor 1. For factor 2, the weights and yields of internal fat and total viscera obtained higher eigenvectors. The discriminant analysis (DA) classified 100% of individuals in their respective sexes and genotypes. Therefore, the FA indicated that, among the NCC evaluated, the weights of liver, kidneys, GIT, skin and feets are determinant for obtaining EBW and TWG. The classification achieved by the DA indicates that the sexual classes and genotypes are heterogeneous.

Biffen demonstrated that the baking quality of wheat was under genetic as well as environmental control. His variety Yeoman made a major contribution to food supplies in UK in the early twentieth century. The science and art of plant breeding for wheat quality in the twentieth century is reviewed, including the development of tests to provide information on baking quality.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) are considered as the most suitable crops for biodiesel production in the Mediterranean basin. Soybean (Glycine max L.) could also be used, under certain conditions. In Greece, the farming practice adopted in each region varies significantly, leading to significant differences in the levels of emitted greenhouse gases (GHG). Greenhouse gas emissions were estimated during the cultivation phase as grams of carbon dioxide equivalents (g CO2e) per megajoule (MJ), followed by emission savings (%) estimation when fossil fuels are replaced by biodiesel. Crop and region comparisons provided important information towards promoting sustainability. Overall, sunflower demonstrated the lowest average emissions, 53·8 g CO2e/MJ, followed by rapeseed and soybean. Furthermore, rapeseed achieved the lowest emission saving level required by European legislation in most cases studied, with an average value of 37%. Irrigation and nitrogen fertilization were the operations mostly contributing to the total quantity of GHG emissions. More specifically, the highest GHG emissions were found for soybean irrigation (34%) and rapeseed nitrogen fertilization (68%).

Drought is a major constraint to maize production in West and Central Africa (WCA). Assessment of genetic gain from S1 recurrent selection under drought is crucial for the development of drought tolerance breeding strategies. In an early white population, 60 S1 families each derived from the base population and three cycles of selection were evaluated under drought and well-watered conditions at two locations in Nigeria for 2 years to determine genetic variability, gains from selection and predict response to selection for grain yield and other traits. Genetic variances generally decreased for yield and other traits in advanced cycles under drought and well-watered conditions except yield and ear height under well-watered conditions. Similarly, heritabilities for yield and other traits decreased in advanced cycles under drought but increased in advanced cycles under well-watered conditions. Realized gain for yield was 0·291 t/ha, corresponding to 30·5% per cycle under drought and 0·352 kg/ha with a corresponding gain of 16·7% per cycle under well-watered conditions. Predicted gain based on C3 was 0·282 and 0·583 t/ha under drought and well-watered conditions. Low genetic variances, heritabilities and predicted gain for yield and other traits suggested a need to introgress drought tolerance genes into the population.

The present paper presents details of the population dynamics of Diabrotica v. virgifera LeConte beetles on six maize varieties of three different maturity classes, i.e. early (FAO 190), medium-early (FAO 250) and medium-late (FAO 280–300), grown in Central and Eastern Europe. The study was conducted in 2009/10 in the south-eastern part of Poland. The D. virgifera beetles were captured using two types of trap: pheromone (PTs) and floral-baited (FTs). Significant differences in beetle counts were found between: (i) the first and second year of the study (higher in 2009 than in 2010); (ii) the varieties of maize and their different growth stages; (iii) early and medium-late varieties of maize. Initially, depending on the availability of maize silk and pollen, the most numerous D. virgifera beetles were found on the early varieties followed by the medium-late varieties. The study also revealed a significant difference in the performance of the two types of trap used to monitor the number of adults, particularly during the initial period when arrival rates were high. Pheromone traps were more effective in catching D. virgifera beetles, especially during the flowering stage of maize. Floral-baited traps were most effective at the end of the active growth of maize, when the preferred food of D. virgifera was unavailable.

High temperature negatively affects cotton production worldwide. In Pakistan, cotton crop faces high temperature at peak flowering during June–July, which is a major reason for yield losses. The present study was conducted to find some agro-physiological markers for high-temperature tolerance. Fifty cotton genotypes were raised under normal sown (high-temperature stress) and late sown (optimum temperature) conditions for 2 years. Data were recorded for relative cell injury percentage (RCI), chlorophyll content (CC), canopy temperature (CT), boll retention percentage (BR), bolls per plant (BP), boll weight (BW), hundred seed weight (HSW), sympodial branches per plant (SBP), plant height (PH) and seed cotton yield (SCY). A large amount of variability was found among cotton genotypes as proved by descriptive statistics. Stable genotypes were selected based on higher SCY and yield components (BP, BW, HSW, SBP, PH and SCY) performance along with less RCI%, high CC and low CT. The results of heatmap analysis showed that the six cotton genotypes viz., FH-Noor, FH-Lalazar, FH-458, FH-466, NIAB-545 and NIAB-878 performed better under high-temperature stress. These selected genotypes can be a source for breeding high-temperature tolerance. Furthermore, the results from correlation analysis confirmed that the traits such as RCI%, CC and CT can be considered as early selection criteria due to their positive association with SCY. Whilst some other parameters such as BP, BW, BR, SBP and PH might be used as direct selection indices for SCY under high-temperature stress.

Butoxybutyl alcohol (BBA) is a possible growth promoter contained in the fermentation and distillation by-products of a traditional Japanese spirit, shochu. In the present study, BBA was synthesized and its chemical structure was confirmed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. Then, two studies were conducted to investigate the effects of feeding the synthesized BBA on the growth and skeletal muscle proteolysis of broiler chickens. Ross male broiler chickens were divided into two groups, control (basal diet: 219 g crude protein/kg and 12·66 MJ metabolizable energy/kg) and BBA diet (30 mg BBA/kg basal diet), with the experimental diets being provided from 15 to 27 days and 0 to 27 days of age, for Studies 1 and 2, respectively. Butoxybutyl alcohol supplementation increased final body weight in both studies, whereas feed intake was unchanged, thereby indicating significantly increased feed efficiency. Furthermore, the synthesized BBA increased the weights of the pectoralis superficialis and profundus muscles, and the leg. The BBA decreased the Nτ-methylhistidine concentration in the excrement and plasma, which are indices of the rate of skeletal muscle protein degradation. It also decreased the mRNA levels of μ-calpain large subunit, atrogin-1/muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx), ubiquitin and 20S proteasome C2 subunit. These suggest that growth promotion due to the feeding of synthesized BBA is caused by the suppression of skeletal muscle protein degradation, which is related to a decrease in gene expression in the calpain and ubiquitin–proteasome systems.

Floral organ development influences plant reproduction and crop yield. The mechanism of floral organ specification is generally conserved in angiosperms as demonstrated by the ‘ABC’ model. However, mechanisms underlying the development of floral organs in specific groups of species such as grasses remain unclear. In the genus Oryza (rice), a spikelet consists of a fertile floret sub-tended by a lemma, a palea, two sterile lemmas and rudimentary glumes. To understand how the lemma is formed, a curve-shaped lemma-distortion1 (ld1) mutant was identified. Genetic analysis confirmed that the ld1 mutant phenotype was due to a single recessive gene mutation. Using a large F2 population, the LD1 gene was mapped between markers Indel-7-15 and Indel-7-18, which encompassed a region of 15·6 kilo base pairs (kbp). According to rice genome annotations, two putative genes, LOC_Os07g32510 and LOC_Os07g32520, were located in this candidate region. However, DNA sequencing results indicated only 1 base pair (bp) substitution (T⇨C) was found in LOC_Os07g32510 between the wild-type and the ld1 mutant. Thus LOC_Os07g32510, encoding a DNA binding with one zinc finger (DoF) containing protein, was the candidate gene for LD1. Further analysis showed that mutation of the amino acid cysteine (C) to arginine (R) was likely to lead to zinc finger protein deactivation. Phylogenetic and conservation analysis of the gene from different species revealed that cysteine was critical to LD1 function. As a new gene controlling lemma development, the study of LD1 could provide insights into rice floral organ formation mechanisms.

The results of the work may be briefly summarised as follows:

(a) The rate of fermentation of ciders and perries made from different varieties of vintage fruit varies considerably.

(b) There is probably a relation between the rate of fermentation and the variety of fruit from which the cider or perry is made. Certain varieties, for instance, as a rule yield juices which ferment slowly, while others give juices which generally ferment at a rapid rate.

(c) The main factor in determining the rate of fermentation appears to be the nitrogenous matter present in the juice, which is assimilable by the yeast. The quantity of such substances present is generally insufficient for satisfactory nutrition of the yeast, and consequently the rate of fermentation is normally slower than would be the case if sufficient nitrogenous food were present to meet the full requirements of the yeast. The relative rates of fermentation of ciders and perries fermented under similar conditions are probably an index of the relative amounts of assimilable nitrogenous matter present.

(d) The state of ripeness of the fruit at the time of milling affects the rate of fermentation of the juice. During the course of ripening the rate becomes slower until a certain point is reached, which probably represents the period of perfect maturity of the fruit. Afterwards the rate increases in proportion as ripeness proceeds to decay. The degree of exposure of the fruit to direct sunlight also affects the rate of fermentation, the more exposed the fruit the slower the rate. In each case the result appears to be due to the quantity of assimilable nitrogenous matter in the juice being influenced.

(e) Direct influence on the rate of fermentation of the juice by any of the chemical constituents other than the nitrogenous substances has not been observed. If any have an influence, it is masked by other factors of greater importance. An indirect influence on the rate by the mucilaginous elements is occasionally met with, due to the formation of a clot which mechanically impedes the action of the organisms of fermentation.

(f) The rate of fermentation in practical cider-making does not appear to be materially affected by the fermentative powers of the kinds of yeast present in the juice. Normally there are present varieties which are capable of maintaining the fermentation at practically the maximum rate allowed by the nitrogenous constitution of the juice. “Dominant” fermentation with selected yeasts of high or low fermentative powers had comparatively little effect upon the rate.

(g) The aeration of the juice has a marked effect upon the rate of fermentation, the admission of air to the juice producing a decided increase in the rate.

(h) The temperature at which the fermentations are conducted affects the rate in the customary manner.

It is clear, therefore, that apart from the use of purely practical methods, e.g. filtration,—which it is not intended to consider here— a certain measure of control over the rate of fermentation of ciders and perries can be exercised by the cider maker, and that therefore the production of sweet and dry types of these beverages need not be more or less haphazard, as is commonly the case. By careful selection of the varieties of fruit used and by suitable blending of various types, combined with attention to the condition of ripeness of the fruit at the time of making, it should be possible to obtain a juice possessing the desired rate of fermentation, although some allowance for seasonal influences is necessary. These have not been considered above, as the work has not been extended over a sufficiently long period to allow of definite conclusions being drawn. At the same time it is fairly established that in some seasons the average rate of fermentation is much faster than in others. It would appear from the results as to the effect of direct sunlight as though the amount of sunshine during the period of ripening of the fruit upon the trees played an important part in seasonal influence. During the course of fermentation of the liquors the rate may be controlled to some extent by aeration and temperature.

Although the subject has been considered almost entirely from the point of view of the rate of fermentation, it should be mentioned that not only the rate but also the degree to which fermentation proceeds is involved. Although perhaps not invariably the case, as a rule fermentation can proceed to a further point in rapidly than in slowly fermenting juices. Accordingly no distinction has been made between them. In some cases the latter feature would more correctly express the facts than the former.

In conclusion I take this opportunity of expressing my indebtedness to Mr James Watts for his kindness in placing his factory at my disposal for experiments with selected yeasts; to the many cider makers and others, who have rendered considerable assistance in the direction of obtaining different varieties of vintage fruit required for the work; and to the various members of the staff of the Institute, who have carried out the practical work in the cider house.

The wild asparagus Asparagus acutifolius L. is common in the Mediterranean Basin. Wild asparagus spears are an important food source within their native range, and can be used as a sustainable nutrition source. In addition, interest has risen in wild relative species of Asparagus as a source of genetic improvement in Asparagus officinalis L. In this study, the quality traits (spear colour, total soluble solid content, dry matter content and chlorophyll and sugar fractions) and health-related compounds (total phenolics and antioxidant capacity) of fresh spears of wild and cultivated asparagus grown in Turkey were compared using the same three harvest periods for two consecutive years. The results of this study indicated that spears of wild asparagus contained a higher level of greenness (–a*), hue angle, total soluble solid, dry matter, chlorophyll, sugars, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, compared to cultivated asparagus. Although there was no significant difference in the total soluble solid, glucose, sucrose and antioxidant activity in the contents of the spears of both species throughout the season, the colour, dry matter, chlorophyll, fructose, total sugar and total phenolic content were subject to seasonal variations. Colour, chlorophyll and total phenolic content showed some minor fluctuations over the course of the season, but the patterns of fructose and total sugar differed, which tended to increase throughout the harvest season. The present work suggests greater quality traits and biochemical compounds of the spears of A. acutifolius compared with those of commonly cultivated species.

Transition from juvenile to adult vegetative phase in maize is associated with pest and disease resistance. However, reports are not consistent on the significance and relative importance of additive or dominance genetic effects and variances. The purpose of the present research was to elucidate the genetic effects and variances and to identify molecular markers associated with phase transition. Three cycles of divergent selection were carried out in a maize synthetic accelerating and delaying phase transition. Three and four inbred lines were released from the third cycles of late phase transition (LPT) and early phase transition (EPT), respectively. Generation mean analyses were performed from two LPT×EPT crosses in order to calculate genetic effects and variances. Markers associated with vegetative phase transition were identified by contrasting simple sequence repeat (SSR) alleles between LPT and EPT inbreds and selection cycles, and by testing whether drift could explain the allelic changes observed in the respective third cycles of selection. Juvenile traits are mainly regulated by additive genetic effects and variances, whereas adult traits have a complex regulation involving dominance and epistatic effects. Based on error variances, EPT improves phenotypic stability. The SSRs phi028, phi112 and umc1725 were associated with selection for phase transition, suggesting that these genome regions are involved in the regulation of vegetative phase transition of maize, although none of the genes previously associated with phase transition has been located in those regions.

Literature dealing with disposal of farm wastes is mainly concerned with smell, heavy metal toxicity, nutrient accumulation and soil physical conditions. Soil is required to filter and absorb the solid material and release a filtrate free from pollutants while remaining relatively unaltered. The importance of soil type in reducing pollution potential is recognized but little study has been made of the effect of pollutants on soil morphology. This paper reports changes observed in a fine silty and fine loamy typical brown earth of the Rheidol series on terrace gravels after treatment with pig slurry. It is concluded that pig slurry spread at the rate of 50 m3/ha per week will cause this permeable soil to deteriorate under an average rainfall of 1117 mm/year unless rest periods are given.

Seed production of five selections of Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis was studied in Bali, Indonesia (latitude 8° 30′ S) with a series of harvests at three sites of increasing altitude and rainfall: (1) Sesetan, 10 m, (2) Kuwum, 280 m and (3) Pekarangan, 1000 m. Seed yield of cv. Graham, CPI 34906, cv. Cook and cv. Endeavour was maximal at Sesetan with yields of 109, 39, 38 and 166 g/m2 respectively, whilst cv. Schofield, which flowered little at low altitude, produced 12 g/m2 at Pekarangan. Optimum time of harvest varied from 26 April for cv. Graham at Sesetan to 1 November for cv. Schofield at Pekarangan. Yield stability over sites was greatest in cv. Graham, in which increased number of florets per spike at high altitude partially compensated for negative altitudinal effects on spike density. Disease reduced yields of cv. Cook and cv. Endeavour at Kuwum and Pekarangan and the incidence of rainfall at advanced stages of crop development reduced spike density and seed maturation.

It is suggested that the high seed yields attained at the low altitude, low latitude Sesetan site were attained via (1) vigorous vegetative growth and a longer duration of floral induction resulting in high bud site density, (2) high bud site fertility, (3) high seed set (ca. 70–80%), (4) high seed weight and (5) little or no disease or insect damage. The greater synchrony of flowering at higher latitude sites may be less critical for high levels of seed production than the greater length of crop development available at low latitudes.

A field experiment was made at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi to compare the efficiency of Mussoorie rock phosphate with ordinary superphosphate for two forage legumes, cowpea (Vigna sinensis Savi) and cluster beans (Cyamopsis tetragononoloba L.) and residual effects were studied in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). For both the forage legumes Mussoorie rock phosphate was only 22% as effective as ordinary superphosphate (on soil of pH 7·1) and it had no significant residual effects on wheat even when the application rates supplied three times as much P as was supplied by ordinary superphosphate.

Two experiments with growing pigs showed that the addition of L-lysine hydrochloride to diets limiting in lysine content raised not only N retention but also true N digestibility as a percentage of the diet. The change achieved in amino acid balance had no consistent effect upon ED (digestible energy, kJ/g diet) and therefore the experiment did not support the hypothesis that non-linear changes in dietary ED, resulting from ingredient substitutions, could be attributed to associated changes in amino acid balance.
