I wanted to take up this book, but found difficulty in closing it until I had read it through from cover to cover.

A delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mr. Pierre Jequier, accomplished a mission between May and July 1963 on the South American continent. He visited six countries where he made many useful contacts and intervened on behalf of the victims of internal disturbances. These countries were Argentine, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and Venezuela.

For some years past the International Committee of the Red Cross has made a point of marking twenty years of service by members of its staff. At a ceremony which took place on December 20, 1962 and in which several members of the International Committee took part, the President, Mr. L. Boissier expressed the institution's recognition of the zeal and loyalty of sixteen staff members, to each of whom he presented a silver salver individually inscribed by name.

The International Committee has awarded its Silver Medal to one of its delegates, Mr. Roger Vust. It was during a plenary session on June 6, 1963 that Mr. Leopold Boissier gave him this souvenir in the name of the institution over which he presides.

Mr. Vust has represented the ICRC since 1942 in Algeria where, from 1944 to 1945, as assistant to Dr. Wyss-Dunant, he visited the prisoners of war. At the same time he was constantly intervening with the Allied Military Authorities for the organization of relief convoys and the forwarding of civilian messages. From 1945 onwards, he was the head of the Delegation and up to 1947 he also attended to the repatriation of the seriously wounded and to the tracing of missing persons.

At the beginning of autumn 1962, following the death of the Imam Ahmed and the overthrow of his successor, the Imam El Badr, conflict broke out in the Yemen which was to pit the Republican forces under President Sallal, aided by the Egyptians, against the Royalist forces entrenched in the mountainous regions of the country. A year after the beginning of these events fighting is still continuing and the International Committee of the Red Cross is aware that there are still many victims in need of assistance.

The General Navigation Company of Lake Léman in Lausanne has honoured the work of the Red Cross by naming its newest vessel after the author of A Memory of Solferino. The Company chose the date of the Centenary of the foundation of the ICRC for the naming of the boat, and a ceremony took place at Ouchy shipyard on February 17, 1963, before a large crowd.
