The International Committee has published its Annual Report for 1966. Events obliged it to undertake a considerable number of tasks in the five continents and these are described, showing how the Red Cross intervened in very diverse circumstances in one country after another. Actions of a general character were also pursued, in particular in the field of international humanitarian law. Mention should also be made of its permanent tasks such as those of publicising the Geneva Conventions.

South-West of the huge desert waste stretching further than the eye can see lies a region where a barrier of mountains and immense rocks forms the horizon; this is the Yemen where the ICRC, three years ago, decided to bring relief to the prisoners taken in combat and to the military and civilian wounded and sick.

On June 2, 1967, the International Committee of the Red Cross again received from its delegates in the Yemen reports of bombing by toxic gas.

A medical team, led by the head of the ICRC mission in the Yemen, went on May 15 and 16 to a village in the northern part of the country to attempt to give aid to the victims of bombing having taken place some days previously and as a result of which, according to the survivors, many inhabitants had died of asphyxiation.

Wishing to contribute to the medical action of the ICRC in the Yemen, the Tunisian Red Crescent has recently presented it with a large quantity of medical supplies.

Due to the events affecting the civilian population in the Yemen, and as certain press and radio circles have ascribed to ICRC delegates in the Sear East statements which they have never made, and which were quite unfounded, the ICRC launched the following appeal on January 30, 1967.

Dissemination of knowledge of the Geneva Conventions is not merely a long-term task—it is a permanent one. One age group succeeds another ; generation succeeds generation ; the students become teachers and forgotten lessons of the past fade into the background of a past which is itself forgotten.

Miss Alice Girard, President, and Miss Helen Nussbaum, Executive Director of the International Council of Nurses, the central headquarters of which have been transferred to Geneva once again, paid a visit to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
