Positive evidence has been found for person-centered care provisioning (PCC), the level of person- centeredness of care is positively associated with residents’ quality of life, quality of care an wellbeing.

When providing PCC, care and support are provided in line with the needs, preferences and capacities of people with dementia. PCC is seen as the golden standard for dementia care. However, in nursing homes, needs and preferences of people with dementia are not always obvious, due to the relatively high levels of cognitive impairment. This, and amongst others time constraints might hinder high PCC by care professionals. Limited evidence show that certain organizational and environmental conditions, such as satisfactory leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuing education, lead to higher PCC. In order to facilitate care professionals as much as possible in providing PCC, more insight is desirable.

This study aims to provide more insight into the modifiable factors that contribute to PCC for people with dementia in Dutch nursing homes.

A cross-sectional design was applied. Data were collected during the fifth assessment of the Living Arrangements for people with Dementia (LAD)-study from April 2019 until February 2020. Care professionals working in psychogeriatric units in nursing homes filled in an online survey. Organizational characteristics of participating nursing homes were inventoried.

The level of PCC was assessed with the Dutch version of the ‘Person-centred care questionnaire’ (PCCq). Modifiable factors potentially impacting the level of provided PCC with regard to staff characteristics (e.g. autonomy, education), organizational features (e.g. size, involvement of family in care), and culture (e.g. learning climate) were included in multiple linear modelling.

In total 58 nursing home facilities were included in the study, and 814 care professionals completed the survey. Average PCCq score was 3.2 (SD = 0.4; range 0 to 4, higher scores indicating higher PCC).

Factors related to staff, and organizational features and culture, that contribute to PPC will be presented. The outcomes of the study will provide input for the optimal organization of dementia care, in order to support care professionals working in nursing homes to provide PCC.

Providing care for people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia is stressful as these individuals are commonly labelled as aggressive or resistant to care. Few studies have evaluated the impact of providing support to professional caregivers working in long-term care. Our mixed methods pilot study evaluated the impact of the innovative Affect Education Model among health care providers from two Toronto nursing homes.

The two-person centred Affect Educational Model through the use of seven questions that encourage self-reflection teaches that problematic behaviours are co-constructed between individuals with BPSD and caregivers. Study procedures included recruiting nursing staff and personal support workers and teaching them the model in five weekly 30-minute group sessions. Qualitative measures in the form of focus groups were obtained. Quantitative measures were obtained through the use of five questionnaires.

Qualitative findings from focus groups identified four themes: facilitators and barriers perceived in current care delivery, the impact of the model experience on staff care delivery, reflections on being taught the model, and future model implementation. Quantitative results were also collected and discussed.

The use of both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment of individuals with BPSD may be greatly enhanced by an interpersonal two-person Affect Education Model that emphasizes the importance of calming down and self-reflection. Future directions include expanding the model to family caregivers through the use of multimedia resources.

Research shows that mental demands at work affect later-life cognitive functioning and dementia risk, but systematic assessment of protective mental work demands (PMWDs) is still missing. The goal of this research was to develop a questionnaire to assess PMWDs.

The instrument was developed in accordance with internationally recognized scientific standards comprising conceptualization, pretesting, and validation via confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), principal component analysis (PCA), and multiple regression analyses.

We included 346 participants, 72.3% female, with an average age of 56.3 years.

Item pool, sociodemographic questions, and cognitive tests: Trail-Making Test A/B, Word List Recall, Verbal Fluency Test, Benton Visual Retention Test, Reading Minds in the Eyes Test.

CFAs of eight existing PMWD-concepts revealed weaker fit indices than PCA of the item pool that resulted in five concepts. We computed multivariate regression analyses with all 13 PMWD-concepts as predictors of cognitive functioning. After removing PMWD-concepts that predicted less than two cognitive test scores and excluding others due to overlapping items, the final questionnaire contained four PMWD-concepts: Mental Workload (three items, Cronbach’s α = .58), Verbal Demands (four, Cronbach’s α = .74), Information Load (six, Cronbach’s α = .83), and Extended Job Control (six, Cronbach’s α = .83).

The PMWD-Questionnaire intends to assess protective mental demands at the workplace. Information processing demands and job control make up the primary components emphasizing their relevance regarding cognitive health in old age. Long-term follow-up studies will need to validate construct validity with respect to dementia risk.

The Brain Health Test-7 (BHT-7) is a revised tool from the original BHT, containing more tests about frontal lobe function. It was developed with theaim of identifying patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early dementia.

Here we report the validity of the BHT-7 versus the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) in differentpsychiatry or neurology clinics.

Patients with memory complaints were recruited in this study from the outpatient clinic of psychiatry or neurology in 3 different kinds of hospitals. Allpatients underwent the evaluation of the BHT-7, MMSE, MoCA, and clinical dementia rating (CDR). The clinical diagnosis (normal, MCI, dementia) was made by consensus meeting, taking into account all available data.

Demographic data and the scores of the MMSE, MoCA, and BHT-7 between groups were compared. Logistic regression was adopted for analysis of optimal cutoff values, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve,and the area under the ROC curve (AUC).

We enrolled a total of 1090 subjects (normal 402, MCI 317, dementia 371); of them, 705 (64.7%) were female. There was a statistically significant differencein age, years of education, and 3 cognitive test scores among the 3 groups.

Compared with the MMSE and MoCA, the BHT-7 performed slightly betterthan MMSE and MoCA in differentiating MCI or dementia from the normalcontrols (Table 1). For BHT- 7, the cutoff point was 17 between normal andMCI, and 14 between normal and dementia. These cutoff points for BHT-7were consistent through 3 different clinical settings, but inconsistent for MMSE and MoCA. The testing time for the BHT-7 was about 5-7 minutes, shorter than that of the MMSE and MoCA.

Compared with MMSE and MoCA, the BHT-7 showed slightly better performance in differentiating normal from MCI or dementia subjects. The testing time for the BHT-7 was shorter, and its cutoff points were consistent through different outpatient clinic settings. The results support that BHT-7 is auseful cognitive screening tool for MCI or early dementia in various hospital settings.

There is great concern about the care of the older adults in institutions, especially in recent years. One of the reasons is the cases of elder abuse, not only highlighted by academic and scientific sources, but also by the media. Humanization, respect, empowerment and non-infantilization are key elements to promote good treatment in nursing homes (López et al., 2021).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the care in nursing homes using the Professional good care scale in nursing homes (Pérez-Rojo et al., 2021).

The sample for this study consisted of 269 employees working in different older adults nursing homes in Spain (182 nursing aides and 87 other nursing home professionals: nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists, social workers, sociocultural animators, speech therapists). The employees' evaluations of themselves (their own performance) and their own evaluation of their coworkers in the nursing home (the overall good care in the nursing home) in these two groups of professionals (nursing aides and nursing home staff that care residents) were assessed and compared. T-test were used for data analyses.

The results showed no significant differences between the two groups of professionals when they considered their own performance.

However, statistically significant differences were found when they considered the overall performance in their residency in humanization (p<.001), non-infantilization (p<.001) and in the overall score of the good care scale (p<.001). Good care in nursing homes was significantly perceived as less frequent among nursing aides.

It is important for the evaluation of good care of older adults by the staff to assess both their perception of themselves and their assessment of their coworkers. Good care is the result of a complex construct in which a wide range of factors converge. Therefore, it is essential to contemplate the most accurate assessment of it. To evaluate and promote good care, it seems appropriate to assess the overall performance of all the employees of the nursing home and not only the assessment that each one makes of the treatment he/she gives to the older adults with whom he/she works.

Explore end-user evaluations and feedback focused on lifestyle change in a large-scale multidomain online intervention targeting modifiable risk factors for dementia.

Online survey and semi-structured interviews at conclusion of the Maintain Your Brain (MYB) randomized controlled trial. Participants were 55-77 years of age at baseline, and had engaged in assessments, brain training, nutrition and physical activity, and mental health modules over three years. Of 5,260 participants invited, 2,386 completed online surveys and 1,589 of these respondents provided free text comments. Nearly 250 survey respondents agreed to be contacted for additional interviews; 70 of these were invited, 40 interviewed. Survey respondents and interview completers endorsed whether they had made lifestyle changes because of MYB participation and whether they would continue healthy lifestyle changes going forward. Interview participants endorsed whether they thought similar programs can be useful in delaying or preventing dementia, whether their views regarding this type of program had changed over time, answered open-ended follow-up questions and provided additional feedback. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics and explored using multiple qualitative methods.

Of survey respondents, 90.5% endorsed intention to continue a healthier lifestyle; 63.2% endorsed that lifestyle changes had occurred. Interview participants thought similar programs could be useful in delaying or preventing dementia, but some were unsure. Trial participation had not changed many individuals’ views about online lifestyle programs. Survey free-text and interview comments indicated diversity in pre-intervention knowledge, lifestyle and health-related behavior. Many respondents reported improved knowledge and awareness, some detailed relevant and continued lifestyle change. Those who were already well informed and/or leading healthy lifestyles explained that trial participation had confirmed their existing practices. Trial characteristics, personal characteristics, social relationships and significant events impacted whether respondents had made and/or continued changes. More flexible, adaptive individually tailored goals and timely feedback were requested to better support change.

Surveyed participants who engaged in the 3-year MYB online multidomain dementia risk reduction program reported lifestyle changes and intention to continue having a healthier lifestyle. Older adults in this study suggested that similar online programs need to provide flexible, individualized guidance and feedback to support lifestyle change.

Wisdom researchers acknowledge the complex nature of this ancient construct, although they are yet to agree on its core components. A key question in the literature is whether Openness and Humour are aspects of wisdom or whether Openness is an antecedent of wisdom with Humour as a consequence.

Using structural equation modelling, we evaluated data from 457 online respondents aged 16–87 years (M age = 35.19, SD = 17.45). We analyzed a model with Openness as a precursor to Wisdom (conceptualised as a latent mediator variable using parcels of the SAWS Experience, Reminiscence/Reflection, and Emotional Regulation items), with Humor as outcome. We compared this model with a model using Wisdom as a latent mediator variable using parcels of the Three-Dimensional Wisdom Scale-12 (3D-WS-12).

A model using Self-Assessed Wisdom Scale (SAWS)-9 latent mediator variable with Openness as precursor to wisdom and Humour as a consequence was good fit for the data and displayed full mediation. Similarly, a model using the 3D-WS-12 as latent mediator variable to measure wisdom and with Openness as a precursor to wisdom and Humour as a consequence also fits the data with full mediation.

These findings provide empirical support for theoretical suggestions in the literature that Openness is a precursor to wisdom and that Humour is a consequence of wisdom using two of the most common self-report measures of wisdom. An improved understanding of the nature of wisdom and especially of its potential precursors can also be of use in future efforts to facilitate the development of wisdom.
