The development, survival and reproductive potential of diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) were studied at 25 ± 1 °C in the laboratory in response to two cultivated Brassica oleracea cultivars (cabbage B. oleracea var. capitata and kale B. oleracea var. acephala) and four wild crucifer species Erucastrum arabicum, Raphanus raphanistrum, Rorippa nudiuscula and Rorippa micrantha. Rorippa micrantha was the most preferred species in oviposition choice tests, while cabbage and kale were least preferred. First instar larval mining period differed significantly between plant species with the longest period recorded on cabbage (3.0 days) and the shortest on R. micrantha (0.4 days). Pupal weight was significantly lower for larvae reared on R. nudiuscula, while those of the others were similar. The developmental period from first instar to adult was the shortest on R. micrantha (14.1 days) and the longest on R. raphanistrum (15.6 days). Survival to adult was not statistically affected by the host plant species. Adult longevity ranged between 18.2 days on R. raphanistrum and 24.7 days on R. nudiuscula. The females were significantly heavier than the males on all plant species. However, males lived longer than females. Moths reared on R. nudiuscula recorded the highest fecundity (326 eggs), while moths reared on cabbage had the lowest fecundity (262 eggs). Kale and R. nudiuscula recorded the longest generation time of 31.7 days, while E. arabicum had the highest net reproductive rate (126.4 eggs per day). The highest intrinsic rate of increase was calculated for R. micrantha (0.179) and the lowest for kale (0.147). This study shows the suitability of wild crucifers as hosts for P. xylostella and indicates that they may play a major role as reservoir for the pest during the absence of cultivated host plants.

Coconut is one of the major crops of commercial importance among the palms. The leaf-eating caterpillar Opisina arenosella Walker is the most important lepidopteran pest of coconut palm in India and Sri Lanka. Assessment of crop loss is essential for a realistic planning for research and developmental policies. Information on the yield loss in coconut due to O. arenosella attack is very meagre. In the present study, results of investigations carried out on leaf-eating caterpillar-induced yield loss in coconut palms in Kerala, India, for a period of 4 years (2002–2005) are presented. A maximum crop loss of 45.4% in terms of nut yield was recorded from infested palms in the succeeding year of severe pest incidence. The infested palms also showed reduction in bunch and leaf production to the tune of 21.0 and 13.8%, respectively. The pest-attacked palms regained their normal yield potential by the fourth year after heavy pest infestation.

Several strains of Hyphomycetes fungi were assayed in the laboratory to determine their pathogenicity against second instar Chilo partellus Swinhoe larvae and fifth–sixth instar Busseola fusca Fuller larvae. Pathogenic activity to both stem borers was demonstrated with Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin. B. bassiana isolates caused mortality of 3–100% of mortality in C. partellus larvae, and 30–84% in B.fusca. Strains of M.anisopliae showed a high level of virulence for both insect pests, causing mortality levels of 65–100%. Development of fungal infection appeared to take longer in B. fusca larvae (LT50 of 6.2–13.2 days) than in C. partellus (LT50 of 1.9–5.4 days). B. bassiana isolate ICIPE 4, and M. anisopliae isolates ICIPE 18 and 30, which were effective against both stem borers, outperformed the other pathogens tested. They appear to have potential for use asmicrobial agents in the control of C. partellus and B. fusca.

Chilo partellus Swinhoe (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is an exotic stemborer of cereal crops in Africa which invaded the continent from Asia earlier this century. In addition to Ch. partellus, several indigenous stemborers are found in Africa. In 1991, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a gregarious endoparasitoid of stemborers in Asia, was introduced into Kenya for biological control of Ch. partellus. Laboratory studies revealed that the parasitoid could successfully parasitise not only the target stemborer, but also two native stemborers that occur sympatrically with Ch. partellus in some locations. Interbreeding studies demonstrated the Co. flavipes would mate with a native congener, Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron), but no female offspring resulted from these matings. Investigations on competition between the two Cotesia spp. indicated that when Ch. partellus was the host, Co. flavipes appeared to be a superior parasitoid. Releases of Co. flavipes were made in 1993 in Kenya. Recoveries in 1994,1995 and 1996 demonstrated that the parasitoid was firmly established in two regions of Kenya and in northern Tanzania. Preliminary observations suggest that the parasitoid is causing greater mortality to stemborers in southwestern Kenya than in the coastal area.

The population density of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.), the species diversity of its predators, parasitism on eggs, larvae and pupae, and associated yield of canola were evaluated in experimental plots where spring canola was grown either as a monoculture or strip-intercropped with annual alfalfa in the ratio of 3C:3A, 6C:3A and 9C:3A over a 2-year period. The egg density was significantly higher in monoculture than in intercrops. The highest and lowest densities of larvae and pupae of DBM were recorded in monoculture (2.9–3.2 larvae per plant and 1.14–1.20 pupae per plant) and intercrop 3C:3A (0.7–0.6 larvae per plant and 0.34–0.29 pupae per plant), respectively. Shannon diversity index (H') for species composition of the predators of DBM immature stages was lower in monoculture than in intercrops, and was similar amongst the three intercrops. Moreover, the percent parasitism for eggs, larvae and pupae was higher in intercrops than in monoculture. The dry seed weight loss was higher in monocrop (37.6–40.1%) compared to 3C:3A (7.9–8.6%), 6C:3A (19.5–21.4%) and 9C:3A (21.6–25.4%). Our results indicate that intercropping canola with annual alfalfa, especially in the ratio 3C:3A, can increase the species diversity, parasitism rates of DBM immature stages, and enhance the yield of canola. The implications of these findings, in relation to integrated pest management (IPM) in canola cropping systems, are discussed.

The aim of this study was to identify and develop entomopathogenic fungi as biopesticides for management of Maruca vitrata (Fabricius). Fourteen isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin and six of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill. were screened against first instar larvae of M. vitrata. The two most virulent isolates were selected and further tested for production in four liquid media. Different formulations of one isolate were evaluated against different developmental stages. Metarhizium anisopliae ICIPE 18 and ICIPE 69 caused highest larval mortality of 91 and 81%, with lethal time to 50% mortality (LT50) values of 1.8 and 1.7 days and LC50 of 1.07 × 107 and 3.01 × 106conidia/ml, respectively. ICIPE 69 yielded more biomass and propagules in two liquid media than ICIPE 18. All developmental stages and adult moths were susceptible to fungal infection and horizontal transmission caused a significant reduction in fecundity. Isolate ICIPE 69 was identified as the most potent isolate for managing M. vitrata based on demonstrated efficacy against different developmental stages and amenability to production in liquid media and could be utilized as an alternative to pesticides in cowpea IPM.

Continuous breeding efforts in Ethiopia resulted in the release of 15 improved chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) varieties with improved yield, seed quality, disease resistance and better adaptation to different production zones within Ethiopia. This study was conducted to examine whether breeding for increased yield and other important agronomic traits without direct selection for resistance to the adzuki bean beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis L.) has inadvertently resulted in a significant level of susceptibility to this seed pest within the new cultivars. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to see whether breeding for better seed quality has increased susceptibility to infestation by the adzuki bean beetle. Seeds of 130 accessions/genotypes were infested with the beetle in 2009 under ambient temperature and relative humidity at Holetta, Ambo and Debre Zeit, Ethiopia. Data were recorded on attributes of infestation level and seed damage. Data on seed size, proportion of seed coat and grain yield were collected from a replicated field trial conducted with the same accessions/genotypes grown under the same conditions in 2009/10 at Ginchi and Ambo, Ethiopia. Differences among the genotypes were significant for most traits with the exception of the number of uninfested seeds. Accessions with partial resistance include 41320, 41289, 41291, 41134, 41315, 207658, 41103, 41168, 41142, 41174, 41029, 41207, 209087, 231327, 41161 and 41008. The improved varieties were more susceptible than germplasm accessions. The results indicate that genetic progress was achieved both in grain yield and seed size, but breeding efforts for these traits had also inadvertently increased seed susceptibility to C. chinensis. Improvements in seed size resulted in higher infestation levels and seed damage. Future breeding to improve seed quality should simultaneously consider corrective measures to incorporate resistance to the adzuki bean beetle.

Investigations into the potential impacts of selectively managing Apis mellifera on pollination ecology were carried out in several sites in Tsavo National Park of southern Kenya, a typical arid African environment. Temperature alone contributed significantly to the foraging patterns of both managed honeybees and wild bee species within the acacia–commiphora community. Honeybees, vulnerable to heat stress, foraged earlier in the day than wild bee species. Foraging patterns of the latter ranged from oligolectic to broadly non-specialized. Floral biology and adaptations were also considered in the analysis of divergent foraging trends. Observations suggest that honeybees potentially out-compete highly specialized wild bee species for scarce seasonal floral resources. No evidence was found of direct interaction on abundant seasonal floral resources such as the mass synchronous flowering of Acacia spp. at current managed honeybee densities. Investigation of visitors revealed a high diversity of potential insect pollinators, particularly high in wild bee species (Apoidea) diversity. Suggestions for the improved management of honeybees in arid African environments include shading of hives, providing access to water with protection from predators, and cultivation of indigenous, nectariferous plants close to hive colonies.

The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith is the most noxious insect to maize and sorghum in the state of Colima, Mexico. In this work, two maize landraces (‘blanco’ and ‘aperlado’), native to Colima, were grown in Tecomán, Colima, to determine the FAW population behaviour under natural conditions. The spatial distribution of the FAW larvae was random, and natural infestations were strongly associated with the maize phenological stages. The relationship between FAW and plant phenology was explained by non-linear regression models.

This study used the theory-based impact evaluation approach to understand as to how promotion of beekeeping by the Commercial Insects Programme (CIP) of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) has had an impact on honey production in the former Mwingi District of Kenya (now merged into Kitui County). We examined the adoption of modern hives promoted by icipe and applied data envelopment analysis (DEA) to assess the technical efficiency (TE) of participants in CIP. CIP participants had an average TE of 0.56, which was significantly higher than that of non-participants in the former Kitui District (average TE of 0.26). Those who adopted modern hives achieved the highest average levels of TE (0.59). The study fits a Probit model to identify the drivers of adoption and a Tobit model to assess the intensity of adoption of modern hives. The propensity score matching approach was used to evaluate the impact of modern hives on honey production. Results indicate that perceptions about the yield and quality of honey obtained from modern hives significantly increased beekeepers' adoption decisions. The intensity of adoption expressed as the proportion of modern hives owned by beekeepers was significantly high among farmers who participated in CIP. A positive and significant relationship was observed between the adoption of modern hives and the quantity of honey produced. The present study indicates, through the average TE, that considerable room still exists for the improvement of beekeeping and provides strong evidence for scaling up the dissemination of modern hives in areas of Kenya with high potential.

The stored grain weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (Linnaeus), causes significant losses to maize grains in tropical countries. Despite the nutritional superiority of the quality protein maize (QPM), an important concern is the possible vulnerability of QPM genotypes to stored grain weevil infestation. In the present study, the responses of 24 QPM inbred lines, along with several non-QPM inbred lines and hybrids, were evaluated against S. oryzae under laboratory conditions. Two attributes, namely (i) % weight loss in the grains after a fixed period of incubation with the insect and (ii) the number of progeny insects (insect multiplication) generated from six pairs of adult insects, were considered. A cumulative resistance index was computed for each genotype giving equal weight to both attributes. The study revealed DMRQPM-60 and CML167 as the most resistant entries. Shaktiman-1, the released QPM hybrid in India, showed moderate resistance against the grain weevil. However, most of the elite QPM inbred lines as well as some non-QPM inbred lines and hybrids were found to be highly susceptible to the weevil infestation. To explore the possible relationship between enhanced protein quality and varying degree of kernel vitreousness and vulnerability to the grain weevil infestation, both the QPM and the non-QPM genotypes were analysed. The correlations between kernel quality traits and kernel texture with % kernel weight loss due to weevil infestation and insect multiplication were found to be non-significant, indicating possible influence of other factors, including pericarp thickness and endosperm composition, in determining the susceptibility of the QPM genotypes to S. oryzae. The study indicates that QPM genotypes are not necessarily susceptible to the stored grain weevil and identifies promising QPM genotypes with resistance to S. oryzae.

The bioefficacy of various plant extracts, namely Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Khaya senegalensis Desrousseaux (A. Jussieu) and Hyptis suavuolens (L.) Poit, either alone or in combination with half the recommended dose of synthetic pesticides, was studied with farmers to find a more sustainable strategy for the management of bollworms in cotton. A number of treatments were farmer innovations. The treatments were compared six times during the season to the application of the fully recommended dose of synthetic pesticides and to a control with no pesticide application. Applications of either the fully recommended dose of the synthetic pesticides or the combinations with a neem seed extract (6 kg/ha) were most effective in reducing bollworm incidence and damage. Both the treatments gave the highest yields of cottonseed, the latter being the most cost-effective. All the pesticides used, except neem alone, had a toxic effect on bollworm predators. This study has increased farmers' confidence in endogenous technology. The researcher's interaction among the local learning group members, who conducted the experiments, facilitated the introduction of a cost-effective alternative to the standard full-dose synthetic pesticide recommendation.

Exploratory field surveys of the natural enemies associated with balloon vine Cardiospermum grandiflorum Swartz, an environmental weed in South Africa, Australia and other countries, were conducted in northern Argentina from 2005 to 2009. The surveys included other plant species in the genus Cardiospermum and other native Sapindaceae, permitting an assessment of the distribution and host range of the natural enemies. Seventeen phytophagous insects in five orders and ten families, and two fungal pathogens were found. The nature of the potential agents' damage, their field distribution and abundance, and the results of preliminary host-specificity testing indicated that the seed-feeding weevil Cissoanthonomus tuberculipennis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and the fruit-galling midge Contarinia sp. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) were the most promising biological control agents for C. grandiflorum outside of its native range.

The ovipositional response, larval orientation, larval settling, feeding, food assimilation, growth and development of maize stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on a susceptible maize (Zea mays L.) genotype (Inbred A) was compared to five wild plant species of the family Poaceae (Gramineae) in the laboratory and greenhouse. The intensity of oviposition differed among the test plants. Pennisetum purpureum Schumach was the most preferred test plant for oviposition when offered in a two-choice situation with maize. Likewise, P. purpureum and Sorghum versicolor Anderss were the most preferred test plant for oviposition when offered in multiple-choice tests. In no-choice tests C. partellus responses to the test plants were not significantly different. The number of first instar larvae that settled on leaf cuts of test plants in Petri dishes was significantly higher on maize and S. versicolor than on the other test plants at 24 h after infestation in a multiple-choice test. No significant differences were observed in larval settling among wild grasses at 4 h and 24 h after infestation in a no-choice test. In a two-choice test there was no significant difference in the number of neonate larvae that settled on maize and S. versicolor at 1 h and 24 h after infestation. Feeding by fourth-instar larvae was significantly higher on maize than on Echinochloa pyramidalis (Lam.) and Hyparrhenia rufa (Nees) Stapf. Larvae fed on maize assimilated significantly more food than those fed on E. pyramidalis, Panicum maximum Jacq. or H. rufa. Larval growth and development was significantly faster on maize and S. versicolor in comparison to other test plants.

The larvicidal activity of 13 essential oils, 14 major monoterpenoids and 9 N-methyl carbamates based on these monoterpenoids was tested according to the recommendations of the WHO against fourth instar larvae of Culex pipiens L. The results of the larvicidal assays after 24 hr revealed a high potential for the essential oils, such as cinnamon, chenopodium and eucalyptus. Of the monoterpenoids, chlorothymol was found to be the most effective followed by thymol, carvacrol and cinnamaldehyde. Conversion of the most active monoterpenoids into their N-methyl carbamate derivatives resulted in higher larvicidal activities than those of the corresponding monoterpenoids. The use of piperonyl butoxide (PBO) to improve the efficacy of the most active monoterpenoids resulted in higher larvicidal activity. Also, all N-methyl carbamate derivatives were synergized by PBO. Carvacrol derivative, which was strongly synergized by PBO, was comparable with the standard synthetic insecticide malathion.

Functional response of all instars, adult males and females of the ladybird Coccinella septempunctata L. was studied against two species of aphids, namely Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) and Brevicoryne brassicae L., infesting mustard and cabbage crops, respectively. The predatory stages of C. septempunctata exhibited a type II response on both the prey species. The attack rate was highest (0.0192) with the lowest handling time (7.9 min) when the adult female consumed L. erysimi. There was a significant difference in the predicted values of consumption of L. erysimi by fourth instars, adult males and females compared with those of B. brassicae, indicating that the former prey is preferred over the latter one. The adult females prey upon significantly more numbers of aphids than the adult males.

The reproductive behaviour of a generalist aphidophagous ladybird beetle Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius) was studied in detail. The males first mated at an age of about 2 days, while females mated at 1 day after their emergence. Mate recognition was displayed in five steps, viz. approach, watch, examine, mount and copulatory attempt. Being provided with four dummy models, the male appeared to recognize the female through visual and other possible cues, maybe chemical. The duration of mating was maximum (mean ± SE; 133.0 ± 2.8 min) when an unmated male copulated with a virgin female and minimum (95.0 ± 4.2 min) when a mated male copulated with a mated female. Mating duration seems to be influenced more by the change in male sexual status, thus revealing it to be male dominated. The maximum oviposition period (46.0 ± 1.2 days), fecundity (861.0 ± 2.2) and hatching percentage (64.0 ± 0.6) in C. sexmaculata were noticed after multiple matings, while these parameters were minimum (15.0 ± 1.0, 70.0 ± 2.8 and 37.0 ± 1.0, respectively) after single mating. Thus, multiple matings enhanced the total egg output and percentage of hatchability.

Microbial isolates from the gut region of larvae and adults of the variegated grasshopper Zonocerus variegatus (Linnaeus) were screened for extracellular production of the enzymes lipase, amylase, esterase, protease, linamarase and cellulase. Using the pour-plate culture technique, 15 bacterial, 4 yeast and 5 mould isolates were tested. None of the bacterial isolates showed lipase activity, but virtually all showed esterase and protease activities. Many bacterial isolates demonstrated linamarase and cellulase activities, and a few of them amylase activity. Of the yeast isolates, a few had amylase activity. None of the mould isolates showed enzyme activity, except Aspergillus sp., which showed lipase activity. Evidently, the gut of Z. variegatus contains micro-organisms that are able to produce digestive enzymes. Of significance is the biosynthesis of linamarase (β-d-glucosidase) by the grasshopper's gut bacteria, which probably contributes to the insect's neutralization of the toxic effects of cyanogenic glycosides present in cassava (Manihot esculenta), one of its major food plants.

The pink mealybug Maconellicoccus (=Phenacoccus) hirsutus (Green) (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera) occurs in more than 13 countries, but has a major pest status only in Egypt and India. Its biology, host range, ant association, natural enemies and methods of control are reviewed here.

Powders from dry leaves of four plant species: Ficus carica (Moraceae), Eucalyptus globulus (Myrtaceae), Olea europaea (Oleacea) and Citrus limon (Rutaceae), were evaluated under controlled conditions (30±1°C and 70±5% RH), for their biological activity against Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), and were compared to a powder from cloves of myrtle Syzygium aromaticum (Myrtaceae) and to eugenol (the essential oil from cloves). Once mixed with seeds of chickpea Cicer arietinum at doses of 1 to 5% (w/w), all the five powders significantly reduced adult longevity. Among these tested botanicals, clove powder was the most toxic as adult survival in treated seeds was less than 24h, even at the lowest dosage of 1%. The powders from dry leaves also reduced fecundity while that from cloves completely inhibited oviposition in C. maculatus. Indeed, the mean number of eggs laid in chickpea seeds treated with powders from dry leaves of the four plant species above varied from 273.2±30.3 to 373.8±58.2 against 401.8±37.9 in the control (untreated seeds). At the highest dose of 5%, all powders significantly reduced the number of emerging adults: 149.3±46.7 in treatment with O. europaea, 139.8±25.1 with E. globulus, 82.8±48.1 with C. limon, 31.5±20.5 in treatment with F. carica and 0.0±0.0 with S. aromaticum. Tests with lower doses (0,1–0,5%) of clove powder revealed that from the dose of 0.2% and above, C. maculatus adults died before laying eggs. Treatments with eugenol at 5μl/50g seeds (v/w), significantly reduced adult longevity (1±0.0 day), the number of eggs laid (0.0±0.0 egg) and adult emergence rate (0.0±0.0 adult), compared to the control used in this test where these parameters are respectively 7.00±0.8 days, 1134.4±204.2 eggs and 745.6±144.9 adults of the first generation.
