Ticks: Challenges they present to the livestock industry

Abstract

Worldwide recognition of ticks and subsequent control experiences in USA, Australia and Africa is summarized. The symposium lecture includes three research challenges: (a) reduce the direct and indirect costs of ticks to African animal agriculture, (b) complete critical research required for an effective African tick control programme in spite of stable or reduced research funding, (c) learn to package and market new technology used in control schemes. Three questions are suggested for industry representatives and researchers to ask one another: (a) Is the new technology practical and affordable? (b) Is animal productivity really improved? (c) Are the schemes responsive to broader environmental and animal health concerns of society?

Résumé

L'importance économique des tiques sur le plan mondial et les expériences en matière de lutte aux USA, en Australie et en Afrique sont résumés. Cette communication de symposium lance 3 défis en matière de recherche: (a) Réduire les pertes directes et indirectes à l'agriculture en Afrique dues aux tiques, (b) Completer des recherches critiques nécessaires pour un programme effectif de lutte contre les tiques en dépit de ressources stables ou réduites pour la recherche, (c) Apprendre à rassembler et à commercialiser toute nouvelle technologie utilisable dans les programmes de lutte. Trois questions sont suggerées et que les représentants des industries et les chercheurs doivent se poser les uns aux autres: (a) La nouvelle technologie est elle pratique et bon marché? (b) La productivité animale a telle été réellement améliorée? (c) Les nouvelles réponses cadrent elles bien avec les préoccupations de la société en matière d'environnement et de santé animale?
