This paper presents the design approach and test results of a full passive, decade bandwidth GaAs MMIC, composed by a phase shifter (PS) with a cascaded absorptive single pole double throw switch, suitable for transmitter/receiver modules in active electronically scanned array. The proposed PS – fabricated using a UMS GaAs 0.25 PHEMT process – combines all-pass filters with high-pass filters, in order to provide less than 13 dB insertion loss, less than ±20° phase error and less than ±2.5 dB amplitude error in the 0.8–8 GHz bandwidth.

A new microstrip lowpass filter with compact size and ultra-wide stopband using T-shaped resonator is proposed. To make smaller the circuit size of the filter, cursive transmission line is also suggested. Moreover, exact equation of most important transmission zero is calculated based on LC equivalent circuit and transformation function. A demonstration filter with 3 dB cut-off frequency at 1.02 has been designed, fabricated, and measured. Results show that a relative stopband band width of 166.3% (referred to suppression degree of 20 dB) is achieved while obtaining high figure of merit of 46 274.

In this paper, material selection has been done for dielectric substrate material in microstrip patch antenna (MPA) for three distinct classes of wireless communication applications using Ashby's approach. This material selection procedure is based on the creation and evaluation of Ashby's chart of different material indices. These material indices in turn affect the device performance indices, which decide the best possible dielectric material to be used as substrate for MPAs. In this work, quality factor, relative permittivity, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency are chosen as material indices of MPA's dielectric substrate to get relevant performances. Ashby's selection chart shows that 0.75MgAl2O4–0.25TiO2 material for millimeter waves applications, Ca[(L1/3Nb2/3)0.85Ti0.15]O3−δ for mobile base station applications, and (Ba0.95Ca0.05)O–Sm2O3–4.5TiO2 ceramic for mobile phone miniaturization applications are the promising materials that allows best overall performance in MPAs for wireless communication.

Variable Z0 (VZ0) antenna technology is a new design or optimization methodology applicable to any antenna on any platform designed or optimized with any procedure. It should be particularly useful for wireless devices populating the Internet of Things. VZ0 expands the design or decision space by adding another degree of freedom invariably leading to better antennas. A simple design example illustrates its effectiveness.

In this paper, two compact lumped-element band pass reconstruction filters for digital microwave power amplifiers applications in the 800 MHz band are presented. The filters, based on the trisection and quartet topologies, include cross-couplings which produce transmission zeros for maximum selectivity, and can be designed with practical element values. In contrast to common filter designs the input impedance characteristic is optimized broadband to values different from 50 Ω, as required for proper amplifier operation. Both filters achieve an insertion loss of around 0.8 dB and an equiripple bandwidth of 240 MHz (trisection) and 290 MHz (quartet), respectively, with improved out-of-band suppression. Results show that a considerable improvement in amplifier linearity and efficiency can be obtained with the new proposed filters, as compared with simpler filters traditionally used in power amplifier applications.

Wideband microstrip antenna with L-plate capacitively coupled feed structure is designed. The antenna operates in GSM 1800/1900 (1710–1910 MHz) and UMTS I (1920–2170 MHz) frequency bands. The antenna has dual slant (±45°) polarization with high isolation (>25 dB) between the ports. Measurements of the antenna reveal good performance in terms of impedance match, gain, gain flatness, isolation, half-power beamwidth, cross-polarization level, and front-to-back ratio. The proposed antenna can be used in base station antenna arrays, pico-cell, and femto-cell small-area cellular networks.

In this paper, we propose a new design of metamaterial and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure based on double layers of metallic grids. Using finite integration technique, the electromagnetic properties of the grid structure have been investigated and this structure has been employed to enhance the performance of a patch antenna working at 11 GHz. The surface waves in the substrate of antenna have been suppressed by EBG behavior of the grid when used as a substrate, and it improves its gain to 9.21 dB from 5.64 dB. When this structure is also used as superstrate of the antenna, the gain up to 13 dB has been achieved due to its metamaterial behavior. Congregation effect of metamaterial provides a huge improvement in the directionality of the antenna and its half power beam width (HPBW) has been improved to 32.7° and 31.5° from 108.3° and 93.5° in E-and H-planes, respectively.

The effect of time misalignment between the radiofrequency (RF) input and tunable matching network control signal in dynamically load-modulated power amplifiers (Pas) is investigated in theory and practice. Moreover, the impact of different input signal statistics is considered. A simple amplifier model is used for the study, based on which the impact on output power, efficiency, and linearity is explored with various generic multi-tone signals. Furthermore, to experimentally verify the results, a 10 W dynamically load-modulated RF PA is measured. As expected, proper synchronization of the signals is crucial, especially as channel bandwidth increases. Additionally, it is shown that the input signal characteristics, such as the amplitude distribution, are important. Moreover, the prototype RF PA is measured with a 1.4 MHz long-term evolution (LTE) signal delivering an average output power of 33.9 dBm with 46% efficiency. Finally, high efficiency and linearity is maintained over output power by scaling the drain supply voltage.

In this paper, a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) H-plane horn antenna has been designed for X-band applications. Metamaterial is incorporated for performance enhancement of the designed antenna. Capacitively loaded loop is used as the unit cell of metamaterial for achieving negative values of relative permittivity and relative permeability. A half-mode SIW H-plane horn antenna is also proposed in this paper which reduces the size of the antenna without much effect on its performance. Metamaterial is integrated on the half-mode horn as well for improvement in gain and radiation pattern. The antennas are fabricated and tested. Excellent agreement between the measured and simulated results was obtained.

To provide short-range super-resolution ultra-wideband (UWB) radar under multi-scattering conditions, a superior wavefront extraction algorithm is proposed in this paper. Conventional correlation-based pulse separation methods based on SAGE, CLEAN or the previously introduced superior dynamic correlation method (DCM) are revised, validated, and compared. In this paper, the DCM is improved significantly by applying the Pauli scattering matrix decomposition onto the radar data. This novel wavefront extraction algorithm is called polarimetric dynamic correlation method (PDCM) and is suitable to resolve several overlapping pulses, which consist of both strong echoes and weak echoes which are masked by the strong ones. The performance of the PDCM and the comparison with alternative algorithms is carried out by a subsequent feature extraction algorithm for visual verification. Experimental validations are performed with two complex test objects, a maximum length sequence radar device (4.5–13.5 GHz) and compact dual-polarized UWB antennas.

This paper presents two J-band amplifiers in different 0.13 μm SiGe technologies: a small signal amplifier (SSA) in a technology in which never before gain has been shown over 200 GHz; and a low noise amplifier (LNA) design for 230 GHz applications in an advanced SiGe HBT technology with higher fT/fmax, demonstrating the combination of high gain, low noise, and low power in a single amplifier. Both circuits consist of a four-stage pseudo-differential cascode topology. By employing series–series feedback at the single-stage level the small-signal gain is increased, enabling circuit operation at high-frequencies and with improved efficiency, while maintaining unconditional stability. The SSA was fabricated in a SiGe BiCMOS technology by Infineon with fT/fmax values of 250/360 GHz. It has measured 19.5 dB gain at 212 GHz with a 3 dB bandwidth of 21 GHz. It draws 65 mA from a 3.3 V supply. On the other hand, a LNA was designed in a SiGe BiCMOS technology by IHP with fT/fmax of 300/450 GHz. The LNA has measured 22.5 dB gain at 233 GHz with a 3 dB bandwidth of 10 GHz and a simulated noise figure of 12.5 dB. The LNA draws only 17 mA from a 4 V supply. The design methodology, which led to these record results, is described in detail with the LNA as an example.

Design analysis of multiband-coupled stacked sectoral antenna array with finite ground plane using high low dielectric constant substrates is proposed in this paper for modern communication systems and applied physics. Multiband planar antennas have been extensively developed due to demands for integration of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present the design and development of a multiband microstrip antenna array with parasitic coupling and stacking using two different substrates. The stacked designed antenna resonates at three different frequencies: 3.8, 5.4, and 10 GHz; therefore, showing a multiband property with good radiation (far-field) characteristics. A significant comparison study is also presented considering different dielectric constant substrates. The proposed antenna is an attractive solution for different wireless communication systems such as mobile systems, satellite systems, etc.

A novel approach for the rigorous design of magnetic resonant wireless power transfer links is introduced. We show how, starting from two coupled inductors and making use of general network theory, it is possible to derive analytic rules for designing the source and load terminations which provide the maximum power transfer efficiency or maximize the received power. We also show that, by adding suitable matching networks to two coupled inductors we can realize a wireless link acting as a 1:n transformer and having the all required tunable reactive elements on the primary side. The proposed topology greatly simplifies the design, since only an inductive coil and a fixed capacitance are required on the secondary side; in addition, when tuning is required due to coils misalignment or to link distance variation, it can be attained by acting on the transmitter side without the need for a feedback communication through the link. Moreover, when the load resistance is designed for maximum output power, its value is fixed and does not depend on the coupling. A numerical and experimental verification of the proposed approach is also presented.

This paper proposes a novel and simple expression for effective radius of annular-ring microstrip antennas (ARMAs) obtained using a recently emerged optimization algorithm of artificial bee colony (ABC) in calculating the resonant frequency at dominant mode (TM11). A total of 80 ARMAs having different parameters related to antenna dimensions and dielectric constants was simulated in terms of the resonant frequency with the help of an electromagnetic simulation software called IE3D™ based on method of moment. The effective radius expression was constructed and the unknown coefficients belonging to the expression were then optimally determined with the use of ABC algorithm. The proposed expression was verified through comparisons with the methods of resonant frequency calculation reported elsewhere. Also, it was further validated on an ARMA fabricated in this study. The superiority of the presented approach over the other methods proposed in the literature is that it does not need any sophisticated computations while achieving the most accurate results in the resonant frequency calculation of ARMAs.

In this work, a voltage tunable interdigital capacitor loaded with liquid crystal (LC) is investigated and its application for a composite right/left-handed leaky-wave antenna (LWA) is demonstrated. The tuning capability of the varactor is confirmed by simulation and measurement. A material tunability of 25% of the used LC yields a measured varactor tunability of 9%. Based on this, a tunable LWA with a beam scanning of 14 degrees at 26.7 GHz is implemented and measured.
