This paper expounds the systematic modeling of the behavior of radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) exhibiting nonlinear, dynamic behavior. The approach begins with an analysis of the PA output signal to deduce the minimum embedding parameters required to accurately model its response, particularly the nonlinearity order and memory effects depth. The knowledge of the RF PA is then exploited in limiting the number of kernels consequently addressing the complexity of the Volterra series which has been the key hindrance to its wider practical adoption. In the proposed Volterra series model, performance is assessed and compared to memory polynomial model and dynamic deviation reduction Volterra models when used to linearize different high-power amplifiers driven with wideband signals of bandwidth up to 40 MHz. Significant linearization performance is achieved using a reduced number of kernels.

The design and integration of penta-band planar antenna with a low noise amplifier (LNA) for vehicular wireless applications is discussed in this research. By integrating antenna with a LNA, the return loss can be kept low with the increased bandwidth compared with a passive antenna with the same design. The performance of the passive antenna, LNA, and integrated active antenna (IAA) are individually validated with the aid of vector network analyzer. The designed IAA covers navigational frequencies 1.2 and 1.5 GHz, wireless communication frequencies 2.4, 3.3 GHz and dedicated short range communication frequency 5.8 GHz, with LNA gain (>10 dB) and noise figure (<2 dB). The proposed design gives room for simultaneous reception of all the desired frequency bands with better performance for vehicular communications.

We propose simple designs of compact patch antennas with bandwidth enhancement. Firstly, an inverted “L” strip is loaded onto the corner of one radiating patch edge to create an additional resonant mode which can be combined with that one of the conventional patch to enhance the operating bandwidth. Secondly, the “L” strip is replaced by inverted “T” strip to improve further the bandwidth by creating two adjustable resonant modes. The two proposed patch antennas have the particularity of enhancing the bandwidth significantly without increasing their profile and their overall sizes. Two antenna prototypes are fabricated and tested. Measurements reveal that the patch antenna loaded with “L” strip has stable radiation characteristics with 5.2 times enhancement in the relative bandwidth compared with a conventional patch antenna. The antenna loaded with inverted “T” strip has wider bandwidth (6.25 times wider than the conventional patch) and covers the operating band 5.07–5.89 GHz (15%) with measured peak gain and peak efficiency of 6.25 dBi and 78%, respectively. The proposed antennas are easy to fabricate, have a low-profile, and exhibit good performances which make them good candidates to use in real wireless applications.

In this paper, a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) H-plane horn antenna has been designed for X-band applications. Metamaterial is incorporated for performance enhancement of the designed antenna. Capacitively loaded loop is used as the unit cell of metamaterial for achieving negative values of relative permittivity and relative permeability. A half-mode SIW H-plane horn antenna is also proposed in this paper which reduces the size of the antenna without much effect on its performance. Metamaterial is integrated on the half-mode horn as well for improvement in gain and radiation pattern. The antennas are fabricated and tested. Excellent agreement between the measured and simulated results was obtained.

A novel Gysel power divider with high power-handling capability based on half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) has been presented in this paper. A HMSIW ring is used and good input/output impedance matching is achieved based on HMSIW-microstrip taper transition. Two microstrip stubs are introduced in HMSIW ring to assemble two isolation resistors to improve the isolation between the output ports. The even- and odd-mode analysis method is used for the presented circuit. A prototype of the presented power divider is designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured results show a reasonable agreement with the simulated ones.

This paper proposes a wideband four-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna operating in the millimeter-wave frequency band for 5G communications from 24.37–39.44 and 45.09–50.62 GHz. The antenna design has been realized using Rogers 5880 substrate and consists of a T-shaped strip that is attached to the top of a 50 Ω feeding line. Two microstrip lines are affixed at the terminal points of T-shaped strip and bent toward the feeding structure. These bent strip lines are then extended by joining two additional L-shaped microstrip lines. On the back, there is a partial defective ground plane featuring a rectangular slot and a thin strip line located at its center. The dimensions of the proposed single element and MIMO antenna are 0.933λ × 0.933λ × 0.024λ and 1.865λ × 1.865λ × 0.024λ, respectively (at 28 GHz), while the edge-to-edge distance between the radiation elements of the MIMO antenna is 4.0 mm. The design incorporates an efficient passive fan-shaped decoupling structure to decrease coupling between antenna elements. Simulations and experimental results show good agreement with each other. For all resonant frequencies the measured peak gain is greater than 4.85 dBi, radiation efficiency is over 90%, diversity gain is greater than 9.5, ECC is less than 0.025, TARC is less than -10 dB and CCL is below 0.4 bits/s/Hz. The proposed MIMO antenna, with its wide bandwidth, high gain, high inter-port isolation, and high efficiency characteristics, can be used for 5G wireless communication applications.

An orthogonally oriented microstrip-fed bi-element ultra-wideband (UWB) diversity antenna possessing a super-wide bandwidth, high isolation, and band rejection attributes is proposed. The intended diversity antenna uses a 2nd-order Cayley fractal tree-shaped neutralization line among a pair of radiating square monopoles along with additional components like extended ground stubs, hybrid Koch fractal parasitic elements, and an L-shaped defected ground structure to attain high isolation of <−20 dB over 3.1–18 GHz. To nullify the intervention from the existent wireless local area network band, a hybrid Koch–Minkowski slot is carved out from the radiators. A minimal inter-element spacing of 8 mm is attained with the suggested layout measuring 28 mm (L) × 42 mm (W) in extent. The numerical as well as experimental investigations of vital diversity attributes like the envelope correlation coefficient, mean effective gain, total active reflection coefficient, and multiplexing efficiency depict high diversity actualization. The consistency amidst the simulation as well as the empirical results recommends the worthiness of the intended antenna for handy UWB and UWB multiple-input multiple-output systems.

This paper presents a broadband circularly polarized (CP) antenna array for millimeter-wave applications, and the antenna array has the advantages of wide impedance bandwidth (IBW), novel CP design, and low profile. The antenna unit consists of a two-layer substrate and two pairs of magnetoelectric dipoles. Stepped microstrip lines coupled by rectangular slits form a feeder network for easy integration. The axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) is extended because a pair of parasitic patches is loaded and an elliptical perturbation is added. The simulation results show that the antenna has an ARBW of 18.6% (26.4–31.9 GHz) and an IBW of 45.5% (20.6–32.7 GHz), with a gain greater than 7.11 dBic in the IBW. To improve the gain of the antenna, a 2 × 2 antenna array is designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured results show that the array has an ARBW of 16.6% (26.42–31.21 GHz), an IBW of 41.6% (22.28–33.97 GHz), a peak gain of 13.89 dBic in the IBW, the cross-polarization levels in the xoz-plane and yoz-plane are above 20 dB, and a radiation efficiency greater than 89%.

The Muscle Analyzer System (MAS) project wants to create a standalone microwave device that can assess the muscle quality, called the MAS device. To achieve that an algorithm that can derive the properties of skin, fat and muscle from the measurements is needed. This paper presents a machine learning algorithm that aims to do precisely that. The algorithm relies on first predicting the skin using the data from the MAS device, then predicting the fat again using the data from the MAS but also the predicted skin value and lastly the muscle is predicted using the microwave data together with the skin and fat predictions. Data have been collected in phantom experiments, materials that mimick the dielectric properties of human tissues. The algorithm is trained to predict the properties of said phantoms. The results show that the prediction for skin thickness works well, the fat thickness prediction is okay but the muscle prediction struggles. This is partly due to the error from the skin and fat layers are propagated to the muscle layer and partly because the muscle layer is farthest away from the sensor, which makes getting information from that layer harder.

This article presents a novel miniaturized (0.105λ0 × 0.105λ0) flexible complementary frequency selective surfaces (CFSS) structure with sharp band edge selectivity and very high angular stability. To explore two diverse applications as a passband and stopband filter, a novel complementary convoluted square loop (CCSL) type structure has been designed and investigated on ultrathin dielectric material of thickness 0.0023λ0. The second-order wide controllable passband with fractional bandwidth of 19.23% (−3 dB) and remarkably wide stopband of 64.7% (−10 dB) and 54.8% (−20 dB) respectively have been achieved by using a cascaded resonating structure which is composed of asymmetrical meandered CCSL array, arranged on two ultrathin dielectric layers with air foam separation. This particular format would lead to sharp band edge selectivity with steep roll-off (72.43 dB/GHz) and an excellent passband selectivity factor (0.731). An equivalent lumped LC circuit in conjunction with the transmission line model has also been adopted to comprehend the physical mechanism of the proposed single layer and double layer structures. Further, better passband and stopband angular stability at an oblique incident angle of 45° and the bending characteristics have also been investigated thoroughly for the proposed flexible CFSS to check their employability in different conformal structures with WiMAX passband and WLAN stopband application.

In this paper, a completely reconfigurable comb-line bandpass filter is presented. Due to the modularity, different standard coupling matrix topologies like the folded form, cascaded triplets, and the cul-de-sac form can be implemented and tested. Circuit-based coupling matrices like the extracted pole topology can easily be realized as well. Different types of input-/output- and cross-couplings can be examined before fabrication of a fixed filter set-up takes place. Furthermore, the proposed filter platform can be used to construct a diplexer. By using different heights of the inner and outer conductor of the coaxial resonators, arbitrary center frequencies in the range between 1 and 4 GHz can be realized. Various types of input couplings are available and proposed here to achieve bandwidths between 10 and 110 MHz. A variety of cross-coupling apertures able to realize transmission zeros are presented as well.

Synthesis of differential-mode bandpass filter (BPF) with good common-mode suppression has been described and demonstrated on the basis of ring dielectric resonator (RDR) for high-performance communication system. A RDR with two pairs of feeding lines has been used to excite TE01δ-mode. This unique combination of feeding lines and the ring resonator creates a differential passband. Meanwhile, TM01δ-mode of the DR can also be excited to achieve common-mode rejection in the stopband. Transmission zeros are created in the lower and upper stopband to further improve the selectivity of the proposed BPF. A second-order differential BPF is designed, fabricated and its performance is measured to validate the concept. There is good agreement between simulated and measured results.

A growing interest in dielectric waveguides (DWGs) as an alternative to commonly used waveguides (like coaxial or twisted-pair cables) for high data rate interconnects could be observed in the last few years. Especially in the mm-wave frequency range (30–300 GHz) applications with these waveguides benefit from low losses and low dispersion. Moreover, using both polarizations of the fundamental mode in such waveguides could theoretically double the data rate without the need of higher bandwidth or additional fibers. The connection between DWGs and commonly available transceiver chips requires broadband transitions from planar waveguides like microstrip lines to DWGs. In this paper, an overview of the current developments of such transitions is given and a novel low-complexity design is presented that reduces the space consumption by 35% related to recently published works. This allows an easy integration into a printed circuit board layout or a chip package. Furthermore, an extensive sensitivity analysis is presented to prove the robustness toward manufacturing tolerances. The transition is realized at W-band frequencies (75–110 GHz) and achieves a relative 10 dB-bandwidth of more than 25% with a minimum insertion loss of 1.2 dB. It is shown that these properties even hold for manufacturing tolerances of nowadays manufacturing processes.

Sub-beam concept is very useful for size reduction of multiple beam phased array antenna (PAA) systems that are applied for high-throughput communication satellites. In this paper, the synthesis procedure for a PAA with multiple sub-beams in two dimensions of the coverage domain is proposed and analyzed. In the design procedure, the interleaved sub-arraying technique has been applied to eliminate the grating lobes. The extremely short angular distance between adjacent sub-beams is challenging. An innovative beam forming network is proposed, which can generate multiple orthogonal sub-beams while keeping the required angular distance between sub-beams. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the design technique, an example considering the requirements derived from conceptual design of a high-throughput communication payload is presented. The array is optimized using the genetic algorithm while taking into account the technical requirements of the antenna. The gain patterns exhibit a 0.4° angular distance between adjacent sub-beams. In addition, the number of sub-arrays and element spacing guarantee the orthogonality of the sub-beams. The calculated carrier to interference ratio in the synthesized array shows that it has acceptable values in each spot. The aperture size reduction in the synthesized array compared to a conventional multiple beam array is more than 36.7%.

In this paper, two compact lumped-element band pass reconstruction filters for digital microwave power amplifiers applications in the 800 MHz band are presented. The filters, based on the trisection and quartet topologies, include cross-couplings which produce transmission zeros for maximum selectivity, and can be designed with practical element values. In contrast to common filter designs the input impedance characteristic is optimized broadband to values different from 50 Ω, as required for proper amplifier operation. Both filters achieve an insertion loss of around 0.8 dB and an equiripple bandwidth of 240 MHz (trisection) and 290 MHz (quartet), respectively, with improved out-of-band suppression. Results show that a considerable improvement in amplifier linearity and efficiency can be obtained with the new proposed filters, as compared with simpler filters traditionally used in power amplifier applications.

An envelope tracking (ET) radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (PA) is described intended for handsets and applications where a large number of PAs are needed. Instead of the usual split frequency architecture, a linear tracking charge pump structure is proposed. This allows the supply voltage of an RF PA to increase during the peaks of a high peak-to-average power ratio signal. When combined with an LDMOS RF PA, 42.9% efficiency was achieved at 31.3 dBm output power (POUT) when amplifying a 5 MHz bandwidth 8 dB PAPR 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) long term evolution signal. The first channel adjacent power ratio (ACPR) without digital pre-distortion was −30.4 dBc, meeting the 3GPP handset emission mask. The ACPR could be improved to −32.5 dBc by adopting a curved envelope shaping function at a reduced efficiency of 38.9%.

An analysis of operation of a modified inverse class E power amplifier is presented. The proposed amplifier that has a series tunable parallel resonant tank is similar to a hybrid of class F and inverse class E. The principles and design equations required to determine the optimum operation of the amplifier are analyzed in detail. The practical circuit using LDMOS MRF21010 is shown to be able to deliver 40.02 dBm outpout power at 155 MHz. The amplifier achieves power-added efficiency (PAE) of 78.18% and drain efficiency of 78.42%, and exhibits 25.02 dB power gain when operates from a 21 V supply voltage. Comparisons of simulated and measured results are given with good agreement between them being achieved.

This article aims to provide readers with a physical understanding of the propagation channel that is complementary to mathematical channel modeling. It presents an analysis of the directional propagation channel based on radiophotos. Radiophotos are graphical objects where directions of arrival are superimposed on three-dimensional (3D) panoramic photographs. The interaction between electro magnetic waves and the environment is immediately identified with these representations. This paper focuses on the direction of arrival at mobile in an urban macrocell environment. The first radiophoto collection illustrates the major propagation phenomena such as reflection, diffraction, or street canyoning. The second collection illustrates typical propagation channel profiles that are classified according to delay, azimuth, and elevation spread values. The paper also describes an original panorama-based method for estimating noise level in the azimuth–elevation domain.

A gain enhanced dual-band filtenna operating at frequency bands of 3.5 and 5.3 GHz for 5G sub-6 GHz applications is presented in this article. A dual-band antenna is integrated with a filter to improve selectivity. The antenna uses printed monopoles as the radiating element, and the filtering response is achieved using a modified feedline. The designed filtenna is 50 × 38 × 1.63 mm3 in size with a maximum gain of 2.5 dBi. The novel filtenna design is equipped with an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) for the first time to enhance the performance. A unit cell for the AMC is designed that offers zero phase shift in the desired frequencies. A four by four AMC array is designed using this unit cell, which is used as a reflective surface to improve the radiation characteristics of the filtenna. The gain of the filtenna is improved three times up to 7.5 dBi in both bands. The proposed design's overall planar dimensions are 80 × 80 mm2. Using AMC, the gain has improved with a very minute or no change in the other characteristics. The measured results are congruent with the simulated ones, illustrating that the filtenna has good impedance matching and excellent gain in both bands.

In recent years, millimeter wave (MMW) has received tremendous interest among researchers, which offers systems with high data rate communication, portability, and finer resolution. The design of the antenna at MMWs is challenging as it suffers from fabrication and measurement complexities due to associated smaller dimensions. Current state-of-the-art MMW dual-band antenna techniques demand high precision fabrication, which increases the overall cost of the system. Henceforth, the design of an MMW antenna with fabrication and measurement simplicity is quite challenging. In this paper, a simple coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed single-band MMW antenna operating at 94 GHz (W band) and a dual-band MMW antenna operating concurrently at 60 GHz (V band) and 86 GHz (E band) have been designed, fabricated, and measured. A 50 Ω CPW-to-microstrip transition has also been designed to facilitate probe measurement compatibility and to provide proper feeding to the antenna. The fabricated single frequency 94 GHz antenna shows a fractional bandwidth of 11.2% and E-plane (H-plane) gain 6.17 dBi (6.2 dBi). Furthermore, the designed MMW dual-band antenna shows fractional bandwidth: 2/6.4%, and E-plane (H-plane) gain: 7.29 dBi (7.36 dBi)/8.73 dBi (8.68 dBi) at 60/86 GHz, respectively. The proposed antenna provides a simple and cost-effective solution for different MMW applications.
