Observation of surgical personnel in four specialties (cardio-thoracic, general, gynecologic, and orthopedic) in the operating room was performed prior to implementation of an educational intervention designed to improve compliance with Universal Precautions and at 1- and 2-years post-intervention. Use of protective eyewear and double gloving increased following the intervention, whereas the incidence of documented blood and body fluid exposures decreased.

Results from prospective surveillance of nosocomial infections (NIs) in a small community hospital were evaluated, and a case-control study was conducted. The rate of 1.4 NIs per 100 discharges determined by prospective surveillance was found to be underestimated. Prematurity, pediatric service, surgery, length of stay, and age were independently associated with NI.

Antimicrobial resistance, including vancomycin resistance in enterococci (VRE), is a growing problem in healthcare facilities. This “Reality Check” session focused on the question of whether we should try to detect and isolate patients colonized or infected with VRE.

We examined staff influenza vaccination rates in rural hospitals that had both acute- and long-term-care (LTC) units. After controlling for hospital, acute-care staff were less likely to be vaccinated than LTC staff. There was no consistent association between type of worker and vaccination after controlling for both hospital and type of care.
