Peer review information

Review process

This journal uses a triple-anonymous peer review model. This means that the identities of the decision making editor, reviewers, and authors are kept hidden. Please check the full details of this journal's peer review process for more information.

All materials submitted to HEQ are reviewed by the editorial team, which adheres to principles of transparency and best practice in the selection and publication of all material in the journal. That includes triple blind peer review, rapid turnaround, and expert copyediting.

For more specific information about different materials, please see the following information:

  • Research Articles
These are typically 10,000-12,000 words and contain original research based upon archival and primary sources as well as secondary scholarship. Articles that pass internal review are sent to external peer reviewers who generate reports for authors and editors. Multiple rounds of revision may be required. The entire process utilizes triple blind peer review; authors, editors, and reviewers do not know each other’s identities.
  • Historiographical Essays
These are typically 5,000-10,000 words and contain original framing, contextualizing, synthesis, or some other insight into the literature. Historiographical essays that pass internal review are sent to external peer reviewers who generate reports for authors and editors. Multiple rounds of revision may be required. The entire process utilizes triple blind peer review; authors, editors, and reviewers do not know each other’s identities.
